COOKING BASICS | The FIRST thing you need to learn

- Where to start? I've got you covered! We chat about the first thing you need to have in hand to be successful in the kitchen - a sharp chefs knife! How to pick one out, how to hold it, how to use it, and I even demo those skills by dicing and slicing a bell pepper.
RECAP:
You DO NOT need to spend a fortune on a chef's knife, however making a good investment will last you for YEARS. My first chef knife is linked below, and I still have it and use 10 years later. It cost me around $100 (which is about the normal price for a good one), but just sharpen what you have at home until buying a better one fits into your budget!
*LINK: amzn.to/2wyk1rW
MAKE SURE YOUR KNIFE IS SHARP! I promise this will make things way easier. I will create and link a video of how to sharpen down the road.
PRACTICE! It's the only way you will become comfortable with the chef's knife. Every time you make dinner, practice your skills on those vegetables or fruit. I promise you will get there!

I'm here trynna to learn how to cook for my family pray for me y'all 🤘🏽💖🤣
Same I have no experience so I’m preparing for when I move out
Get it!!!! Haha good luck im doin the same! Haha 🤣
Same girl 🤣
Like my self haha 😂
Sam here.
my mom has unfortunately fallen into an ed and forces herself to only eat a bread a day. I am very worried about her, but now she doesn't cook for me nor my little brother anymore either. I hope I will be able to cook for him.
Five months later: I actually did get pretty decent at cooking! I struggled quite a bit but now I have my groceries I shop every week and my few meals I prepare. It has settled, fun to me even! Thank you for the loving comments, it does get better. My mother is also doing big steps towards recovery. I wish everyone the best. Thank you.
I wish you the best of luck!!
How is your family foing now?
I’m praying for you
Are things better?
What’s an ed
I have ZERO cooking experience.
A blind monkey could cook better than me.
I’m excited to get started.
Thank you, in advance!
How’s your cooking going a month later?
I agree how is your cooking going
Hey hows your cooking going 4 months later?
Baby steps will get you there.
How's your cooking now because I'm exactly where you were
Omg yes. Finally, a clear and concise video for beginners that just gets to the basics without 30 minutes of unrelated backstories and unneeded explanations! You definitely need more subs!!
Glad you like! I hope to be doing more videos soon. Had to pause for a bit to get back on track work wise after Covid hit, but stay tuned!
"When I was little my grandma use to make the best pees pies and swift knife cuts, she gave me the secret and I'm passing it on to you"
The only cooker that can pull that off is Bigerbolderbakers.
@@ferndevil5771 LMAO
I like to watch your videos but the music is a bit loud in the background and it is distracting. Otherwise I would choose your videos over the others because you are very simple and clear in your explanations
Silverstreak7878 thanks for the feedback! This was my first round of videos so definitely fine tuning them!
Came on to say this too, really struggling to hear the good content over the distracting music :( as some who needs to focus on one thing at a time it’s overpowering unfortunately. I really liked the content though.
You are teaching something valuable, we don’t need the music
I am learning to cook for the first time really. It seemed very daunting to me because I grew up in neglect and I never really saw how a lot of things should be done. But I am 30 now and I’m ready and confident to just try and learn things, failures are just learning experiences (Also something great I’ve learned) 🙂 I’m really grateful to find you, this is easy to understand. I like your teaching style. Looking forward to watching your other videos and seeing your new videos as they come in. Thank you for this ❤️
It's wonderful that you are confident and ready to learn more, despite the neglect in your childhood. No child should experience neglect. All best wishes to you and enjoy many wholesome meals! :)
Same 🥹 I wasn’t in neglect but I’ve just always had ppl to cook for me even my significant so now it’s over after 9 years of dealing with domestic violence and 4 kids I now have to learn all the things I neglected to learn to improve myself wish you the best of luck the failure part really suck but continue on 😟💪🏽
5:14 that is when she begins to slice the pepper
25M, never learned to cook, no1 ever bothered to teach me. Now willing to learn to provide for my future family. Wish me luck guys 🙏
I'm 14 in 9th grade I was kinda bummed that I didn't get into the culinary elective but, I came here to learn anyways
Maybe you can get in it next year (:
how aren't you able to get into a high school elective? all you do is choose the class, your school is wack
@@jarekg3740 They probably forgot to fill out their elective sheet. It happened to me and I ended up getting placed in tech.
At least you get to go to high school, and have a chance to go next year
Always be thankful, you dont know who wishes they have your life.
@@jarekg3740 it’s cause there were already so many people that chose culinary that it was over filled so a lot of people that wanted it didn’t end up getting it and ended up getting a different elective
Here is why COOKING is SO IMPORTANT:
1. Health, especially when your doctor gives a strict diet
2. Next time you go to the supermarket you will realise that 95% of the content is unhealthy/fast food
3. Fun cooking
4. Way to socialize with others
5. Part of spending time in a relationship
6. Saving money
7. Longer life if you learn to cook healthy
8. For those who think it's waste of time: audiobooks, treat it as a mindfullness exercise etc.
9. Planning your meals- mo more what should I eat?
Stop
Very important thanks. Don't listen to the negative response.
I’m so thankful I’ve found you! My mom was an *amazing* cook, but she passed when I was 20, before I ever took a real interest to learn.
Thank you for breaking things down (no pun intended) for someone like me who literally knows nothing about cooking. I love how detail oriented you are in your teaching- that’s exactly what I’ve been looking for and how I learn best! Looking forward to watching more of your videos on this journey!
So glad you love. Cooking can be very intimidating, but shouldn’t be! So much fun when you just learn some basics. I hope to be doing more videos soon. Had to pause for a bit to get back on track work wise after Covid hit, but stay tuned!
This is EXACTLY what i was looking for , thanks so much. Please do an absolute beginner series for people who were never shown even the basics of how to cook
Love this! I cook all the time, I’m decent at it ... learned so much from this video, love your friendly, encouraging style, super pleasant in the best way possible - great video, and I think the background music is perfect. Thank You!!
Nice, planning to start learning cooking in quarantine
Thank you! My parents think my passion for culinary and cookings is stupid and realistic and forced me to go a different path. This is helping me learn and hopefully go to culinary school
I appreciate the bell pepper lesson.
It's interesting to gain insight as to how others do things.
I personally prefer my method, instead.
And yes, the rocking method is very important... never cut straight down!
So many things can go wrong. Also, don't cut towards yourself... I almost had a very serious incident with frozen chicken breast and I was rushing to meet a deadline, and the knife jumped through the meat & almost cut into my hand.
Rule of thumb:
item being cut, *on the board*
cut away from your body/hand,
and also a part of the knife should be on the cutting board at all times.
Really appreciate the videos! I’m a beginner at cooking for sure. I’m someone who only really knows what to do with a really specific recipe so could you make a video with advice for how to grow out of that maybe?
She gets right to the point, and she’s really pretty. I could watch her cook all day. She makes it easy for me to understand, because I’m a hands-on kind of learner.
Thanks for the basics of knife and cutting demonstration. This is really helpful for me because I'm just starting to learn to cook
I'm 8 years old and I'm getting into the Basics etc and this really helped me (learning how to do the stove)
My daughter and I want to learn how to cook and this already has me looking forward to it. I've cut up bell peppers for fajitas and now see how much better and easier it would be.
Nice style, you should do a series of videos on cutting methods for each vegetable
Great idea! I hope to be doing more videos soon. Had to pause for a bit to get back on track work wise after Covid hit, but stay tuned!
Yes i agree
Oh yeah
If your dicing, you would be surprised how similar each veg is to cut. Mostly cut off ends and split in half. Slice at desired thinness but not all the way through (say an onion) leaving the area you hold onto the onion unsliced. Then take 1 slice parallel to the cutting board about 1/3-1/2 up the vegetable to be cut, remember to again not cut all the way through. Then begin making slices like you would to make slices of whatever is in front of you. But diced whatever will fall off instead of slices.
P.S. i havent tried this yet as i am awaiting decent cutlery for Christmas. Working off a roommates hammered blades atm and it isn't safe!
Some ingredients that are thin can be simply cut lengthways and then diced (carrots, celery, etc)
Agreed
SIDE NOTE: The background music is not the sole purpose of the video.
Great job, Lorin!
Yes I'd like to be able to pay me attention to her but thanks for being a hero and defending her from criticism and progress
I agree. Great video but the background music is not in the background. Makes it distracting and hard to follow the instructions. Please adjust the edit.
This is the first time I watched a cooking video that actually made me feel like I could actually cook something that isn't being ruined from start to finish.
You have to hold the knife with you index finger and thumb on the back part of the blade just before the hand and the res of your hand on the handle it just gives better grip and control it will feel uncomfortable at first but you’ll get use to it
I was looking through comments for someone else who knew this! I came here to further my knowledge after working in kitchens for years, but apparently that teaches you more than youtube these days :/ the way she’s bending her body around to julienne is also weird. You shouldn’t have to turn your wrist down and contort your body for such a simple cut.
This is the best explanation of knife technique I've found! I just wish the background music wasn't so loud. It's almost hard to hear the actual words.
This is the kind of video I have been looking for. Thank you!
I (barely) manage to cook something to eat for myself, but -being Italian- I'd like to learn the basic skills of proper cooking, so I browsed around and found this video. When you talked about the importance of having a sharp knife, I couldn't help smiling a little: I'm a professional hand-sharpener, as in I actually do that for a living without EVER using grinders / sanders / electring tools , and I couldn't agree more!
I'll keep watching this series of videos, and I'll quote you when I'll have to try and explain my customers, usually chefs and professional cooks, that a dull knife not only requires more energy, but it's also dangerous for yourself. :)
After 16 years of not knowing how to cook I finally decided to start learning :)
I love bell peppers in my eggs and in my salads! Thanks for the tips, excited to try them!
Thank you so much, clear and to the point. Great Video
This was so incredibly helpful thank you so much
Thank you for the video!! Super informative and well organized
This video is super helpful, I love how you reference what it was like when you started out.
One tip: I’d pick a less strong song to put under the video😅
I'm tired to see my mom cook everyday after work she needs my help ❤
i was always confused on what i wanted to be when i grow up but now i now for afact that i want to be a chef. I even signed up for a culinary art class and i started to practice alittle.
you are such a great teacher, thank you so much :)
This was great, thank you so much!
Hey Lorin! Thank you for being the start of my journey into serious cooking. I look forward to your other videos and I hope I can look back at this comment in the future!
This is Gold!
Thank you so very much for this tutorial! Every other cooking video that I’ve watched has assumed that people already know the basics. Lots of people, including myself, have no idea where to start. I appreciate the level of detail in this video!
My mom just recently passed away and she didn't teach me anything when it came to cooking. But my mom never taught me on how to do laundry or washing dishes in the dishwasher in which I've learned that those were self explainable. But cooking is something that I am very hesitant with and am not confident in trying so I need someone to give me step by step instructions in how to cook
Im sorry to hear that sending you love my mum didnt teach me to cook either so im trying my best to learn online
Your comments give me a little motivation for myself as I'm in the same boat. I was not taught how to take care of myself growing up, so I'm learning how to cook and more now. I feel bad about it sometimes, but it's good to know other people are out there experiencing the same thing and I'm not the only one.
@@skip031890
Yea with me I'm more of a hands on visual learner so if someone explains things to me but never allows me to cook myself then you've lost me. So I have to have someone right next to me and walk step by step with me before I feel comfortable on a stove or whatever it is
@@Mitten4371 Hang in there. We'll learn together.
I know very little about cooking but want to learn.I am so glad I found you. Thank you so much.
Very cool, I knew I needed the knife. Been working on that, and that's about all I've been working on, lol. Good 2nd hand knives Are available for the smaller budgets.
Thank you❤️
Looks like this channel had a lot of potential. Too bad there hasn’t been a video in a year
OK nice ✌️✌️
No, you can tell she’s not a professional. There are better real chefs you can watch
@@abbyz13 for me, she's the best.
@@abbyz13 im not trying to be a professional im learning how to slice vegetables and that's good enough for me
You explain things so well and clearly. Great teacher!
🧔hi , my name is also Chris, how about a date?
Thank you! I’m planning on being a chef and cooking tysm
Lorin Muito bom seu canal!
Parabéns!
👌
Great video!!! Very helpful!
Thank so much for this tutorial Lorin you ve helped so many!
thanks for the video. Hope you have a Happy New Year.
Love it! Thank u ❤
Thanks for the video ❤️
I am not a bad cook, in fact in high school I cooked dinner 3 or 4 nights a week and I loved it. I still love cooking however I never really learned any official techniques or terms, and since my kidney failure I lost a lot of knowledge. This video is EXACTLY the type of thing I need. The basics to teach me the technique I lack working up to more complicated techniques and recipes.
Outstanding professional informative video!
I am also a professional chef and this was spot on for beginners. Well executed!
I actually think that I learned something from this video. The music was also not that loud it made the video smoother.
Thanks Lorin!
I’m a n00b and gonna start doing more cooking at home.
When i moved to university i decided to teach myself how to cook. If you're going to eat at home, which you do pretty much every day, you might as well cook food you'd order at a restaurant. Beats having instant noodles every night. It also saves money in the long run as most of the things you need can be bought in bulk or last a long time
Thank you! This is exactly the information I was looking for.
I’m learning how to cook for my friends,I hope I do it well
I need this video. Great teaching👏🏾
I love cooking 😋.
And I am passionate for it.
I love my work.
that bell pepper work was therapeutic!! Beautiful.
I'm here learning how to cook for myself and make tasy dishes! I'm kinda of a picky eater and I'm trying to eat more healthy so hopefully I am to soon make tasy dishes 💕
Thank you so much!! this was so helpful.😍😍
Daaamn... all the time i didn't use well the knife.. thank you very much because you teached me how to use propely the knife...
Just discovered this channel and enjoyed watching a few of your videos, then noticed you haven't published in a year . I hope you decide to pick it back up again. I'm a new-ish at-home cook trying to learn the basics, then hoping to take off from there. I love your presentation style and personality. I've subscribed to the channel so fingers crossed I get a notification soon! Take care :)
You are awesome!
I can cook eggs and breakfast sandwiches with the bacon super crispy, lol. I’m in need of learning how to cook , because I want to get in shape and also enjoy eating more
I've heard to move the index finger forward a little bit on a chefs knife 🤷♂️ but seems to give even more control
Thank you!
Thank your so much, please make more vids!
I’m 14 and I really wanna learn how to be a chef so hopefully all your tips can come in handy one day
Great video straight to the point
Excellent video, thank you so much
Great video! I actually just got hired as a prep cook too with no professional experience!! I like cooking at home, but I need some expert-level reinforcement.
Thanks for the video It really helped me a lot 😊
Thank you so much. I would like to learn how to cook. Your instructions are easy to follow. I do not expect knife skills to be one of the first lessons in cooking. Cool!
There is another good knife skills video by chef John, once I practice I can watch that too. Also a sharper knife is safer than a dull knife too
If you made a new version of this video, I have a suggestion: A second camera closer to the chopping board so we can see the chopping easier.
Actually I can't find the video but I'll link it if I do
thanks for the video
I’m glad I found you! You’re like a Mini Gianna from Food Network! I’m a 70 year old Grandma ( recently retired teacher) looking for a new hobby-COOKING! Thanks so much!!
Oooooh! A subtle show off with that fancy bell pepper knife trick!
Teaching and showing off r two different things lol
We're of to a good start... i like bellpeber
Thank you for the vid
Thanks 💯
This is INSANELY informative! Please keep doing more of these
Thanks uuu so much 💓💓💓
Wow. You're pretty darn good. I like your teaching. Its quick and straight to the point. You sure know what you're doing. I'm going to share your videos with my female counterparts. More and more women need to learn how to cook. Its obvious the men dominate in restaurants. I'm also in Texas. (San Antonio)
I'm the worst cook but i'm looking to transform into a level 900 Chef.
3:28 omg I've done it all my life because it always felt good to do it like so
Yeehaw here boosts my confidence
wonderful, i like it
It's a shame tou don't get the amount of subscribers that you deserve. Love the way you teach, the background music is ok
..so I’m finally at this stage in life 😤😂
I'm trying to learn you're an amazing cook🥰🥰🥰😇
I got so happy when I was able to cut an onion. This is my first time actually cooking so I was extremely impressed. Now I have an odd obsession with cooking lol
I’m a self taught cook, cook very well but wanted to go back to the basics I missed!
Your information is good, the pacing is good and you don't try to teach too much at once.
If I may offer a suggestion that will make your videos more visually interesting and also show your audience what you mean better, is to change the view. Take some close ups of the dice, for instance. By inserting close ups or other pertinent information it'll take your videos to the next level.
That is awesome 👏 you got a well explain to me. I would say the correct way to do is the way proper way to learn. Hit you a bell notification I could have learnt more regarding along. Thanks again cutie 🥰
Cool!
could you make a video on portions? I have looked everywhere on youtube, nobody talks about what measurements for what, or how to properly serve yourself enough food. I end up with too many veggies in my soup, or too much rice. I'm really clueless.
