    GREAT REVIEW.
    How long do the colours last in front of the sun?

    • @KimberlyCrick

      About 6 fade within 6 months and about half of them are faded by 1 year. You can see the results at www.kimcrick.com/pages/kuretake-gansai-tambi-by-zig-watercolor-review-and-lightfast-testing

      @@Parkook Are you looking for something lightfast? Paul Rubens and White Nights both make pretty reasonably priced sets with better lightfastness. If you'd rather get something cheap to practice with, I really love both the Miya Himi rhombus set ( ruclips.net/video/duwuYF7x69Q/видео.html ) or the Pretty Excellent set... can't really beat either of those at about $20 usd :)

    Nice review! I have the 24 set but found I rarely used them because I found the cardboard box inconvenient so I used poster putty to stick them in a metal tin (one if the big ones the 6 color qor sets came in) and it is so much nicer to use. Honestly I love the size if the pans and would love to use them up so I can refill with other colors.byw I would have never guessed you've only been painting 5 years! Well done!

      Thank you Lindsay! I've been drawing and doing mixed media art for longer, but once I switched to watercolor it made creating artwork so much more enjoyable for me. Now I find myself wanting to practice a lot more frequently. Agreed, the cardboard box is inconvenient (and this 48 set is HUGE - total desk space hog) but it's also so pretty. That initial presentation always makes me think about how happy I'd be to open a gift to see that lovely package :)

    I got the 48 set of these a while ago and while I have some really beautiful and expensive watercolor paints of all types, these and my White Nights are my most used. I don’t know why but I really enjoy using them and the results they give. I use them when I need watercolor paint that is easily controllable and will behave and stay where I put it. I’ve gotten some beautiful realistic and/or high contrast results with these. I’m so happy with them. I only paint at home as of now so I haven’t worried about traveling with them. And I usually use them in sketchbooks or artwork I am making to just enjoy the process of so lightfastness isn’t very high on my list on concerns when I am picking these up. They’re enjoyable and it still makes me soooo happy and satisfied to pick up and open this box of all the rectangle pans of paint. I love all the gansai tambi and semi moist watercolors I’ve tried. They go very well over super granulated backgrounds with different paint brands. Thanks for the beautiful review. These are awesome affordable and fun paints that I use to their full abilities because of how affordable they are. Highly recommend to anyone starting out or wanting to get a set for sketchbook practice. They’re so much fun!

    I got the 36 color set as a gift a while ago, and even though I have many brands and tubes and... just lots of paint, these are still currently my most used paints. i honestly can't tell you why I love them so much, I just do. Also even thought they come in a big box, I sill find them easy to travel with.

      I could have written this exact comment word for word myself. I have so many beautiful expensive paints but I got the 48 set of these and for some reason, this one is my most used right behind my White Nights. I don’t know why, I just really love the semi-moist paints and I find these to be so rewarding to use. There not super granulating, they behave and stay where I put them. A lot of the time when I watercolor I find myself painting like I would with an ink and just wanting to draw something with paint, versus use watercolors unique properties every single time I use it. And this is just so beautiful. I’ve made some very beautiful somewhat realistic paintings that only really look like watercolor in the backgrounds because of this paint and I love it. They’re beautiful fun little paints and I don’t get that “too expensive/precious to use” feeling that keeps me from fully enjoying so many of my more expensive paints.
      It’s nice to find someone who also enjoys these as much as I do and for the same reasons, whether we know or understand them ourselves lol

    I'm a beginner with watercolour paints and was looking to invest in these for more Asiatic style paintings. Your video is really informative so thank you for including a thorough account! I'm still trying to decide which size to get and whether 48 colours is worth the investment. The skin tones are pretty though...

    I have a smaller set. I too got them for making cards but don’t really make cards now. I love the large sized pans. Not because of more paint just ease of use. I do like the extra colors added to this set and as you said not a lot of mixing needed for good variety.

    Hi Kim! I have so muchmpaint, as you do I am sure, but after looking at these for more than 3 years, and beginning card-making, I took the plunge, loving the lunch of 48 over 36. Glad I did not buy the 36. I would have felt cheated out of the 48, lol. Thanks for your review, I enjoy your opinions and descriiptions. You have a great way of expreesing details and toss in verbal comparisons which I own most of, and that really helpss . Thanks again

    Thank you SO much for this review! I thought about upgrading my Gansai Tambi set today, and found out they have a brand new 48 colour set. I didn't like that in the pictures there were no indication of how to identify each colours, as previously there were paper gaps noting which colours belong where in terms of order. Your review showed the underside of the cover as well as each pan, which was more informative than the shops that stock them haha. Your tips were great too, I'm still learning so I'll definitely take note of them! :)

    NEW COLORS: Pause the video at 4:49 to see the new 12 color names (with tray numbers) highlighted in yellow. *Read on for further notes about staining vs lifting and how choosing the right paper for your technique can make staining paints lift easily* Often traditional gansai have bigger pigment particles, and because of the way they sit on paper more like gouache or mica paints, they can be easier to lift (erase with a damp brush) than western paints. However, this was not my experience with this modern hybrid brand. Many of the colors were just as staining as their western watercolor counterpart. Paper is very important and often not taken into consideration when deciding to do lifting vs glazing/layering techniques. Bee paper allows paints to stain more than arches, making it ideal for layering but not lifting. Arches paper is more of a middle ground allowing for both techniques. There are brands of heavier sized (coated) papers that are made for easy lifting. I prefer Bee paper because I do a lot of layering and it is inexpensive. It will still allow thick particle colors to be lifted, such as mica, cerulean, potter's pink, most Daniel Smith Primatek/granulating paints and other commonly labeled "non-staining" paints. In the future I'll make a comparison video on the way paper effects how staining or lifting a color is. If you're having trouble with glazing/layering techniques lifting up previously dry layers of color, you may want to try alternate types of paper.

    Thanks for the vid. Your painting is amazing as always. 😁 The 12 new colors don't inspire me to get the larger set. The 36 color set already has so many primaries available, you can mix just about any color you want. I wish the extra colors included more useful convenience mixtures; a skintone range, for example.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  5 лет назад +3

      Thank you! I ended up using the new rose beige for skin. I'm not usually a fan of pastels, but some of these new ones were nice to play with, and lilac/cherry blossom are super convenient for floral art. The 36 color set is great though, you're totally right it has everything you need to mix SO many colors :)

    I love then but the shine can be a little off putting as it's really only apparent in the heavier layers but they certainly are lovely bright colours presented so nicely. I believe they have just released a 6 colour granulating set...I think. I could be wrong 😊

    This was one of my first sets too and I loved them to death because of how they moved in the water. I got them when I was really young though and was dumb so I threw away the cardboard box it came with since I just had the paints shattered in my draws to save space especially since I couldnt use it as a mixing palette anyways. Now I'm older, I definitely wished I saved that box because it does have luxurious look to it.
    And yey, you have one of my favourite inks too - sketchink from Rohrer and Klinger. I'm too scared to try but how good is it with a fountain pen?

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  5 лет назад +2

      I love this ink so much, and while I mainly use it in a technical pen I have filled my platinum carbon extra fine fountain pen with it. I had no issues. I think the pigment particles are so thin it's not likely to clog anything. Because it's waterproof though, I'd only put it in a pen you use often or are willing to clean monthly. I wouldn't hesitate to use it in my less expensive pens, though it does say it is safe for fountain pens.

    Thank you for the informative reviews and demonstrations! I finally make sense of a lot of watercolour terminology, it would definitely help when making purchasing choices.
    Given that you’ve reviewed Kuretake Gansai and Boku Undo, is it possible you have a look at Kissho Gansai? RUclipsr Pearfleur made a video using them and said they are like gouache but given that they are not popular outside Japan, its hard getting a clear idea about them.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  4 года назад +2

      Yes, I will definitely be looking at Kissho. They do remind me a bit of Kuretake, they dry slightly shiny and offer a lot of bright fugitive colors. Their sets are very pretty to look at though, I could not resist the gift-like presentation!

    These are beautiful but I hesitate to buy any set where you can't replace individual paints.

    • @KimberlyCrick
      @KimberlyCrick  4 года назад +1

      They do sell individual refill pans, but not very many stores carry them. I've found them on a few sites, such as www.jetpens.com/Kuretake-Gansai-Tambi-Watercolors-Single-Pans/ct/4089 just in case you wanted to try a single pan. Though, once you paint enough to have gone through a pan, you'd have to decide if you were ready to move on to pro-grade paints that offer better specific color options and lightfastness. There's also the possibility of filling the empty pans from any tube watercolors if you have one specific color you find yourself using a lot. Hope that helps :)
