    • @ramjb
      @ramjb 5 лет назад +22

      @@dickcaughtinfan9764 Radiation probably had a lot to do with it. The crash happened during the construction of the concrete containment vessel, the sarcophagus, to cover the open reactor. Helicopter pilots had to do repeated flyovers around the reactor building many times per day. Pilots who took part on it are on record commenting about the fatigue adding up, result of the many flighs. But most of them also talk of feeling severe dizzyness, probably caused by the constant exposure in a heavily irradiated airspace.
      The real crash happened when a Mi-8 flew too close to a crane, the rotor hitting the cables. While we'll never know the true cause of the accident, for sure both fatigue and cumulative radioactive exposure had a part on it. So indeed it did have a lot to do with causing the crash.

    This actually happened months after, but only because the pilot got to close to the crane and crashed. I believe this scene was altered to be this way to show the sacrifices made during the cleanup, and to show how deadly the radiation really was.

    • @Raptor747
      @Raptor747 11 месяцев назад +5

      No, the radiation is what killed them. The rotor hitting the cable was merely the straw that broke the camel's back--you can see how the entire tail of the helicopter just breaks in half even though it hadn't hit anything. That's intense radiation causing severe metal fatigue in seconds, such that it takes hardly anything to cause the aircraft to just break like it's made out of tissue paper. The reason the pilots hit the cable in the first place was probably because they were feeling deeply unwell in the mere seconds they were over the reactor.

    1. The actual helicopter crash occured on October 2nd, not in conjunction with the firefighting in the immediate aftermath of the disaster. It was many months later, and by this point there was no fire, and the sarcophagus was already under construction.
    2. The helicopter in question (Mi-8, numbered "30") was not dumping sand or boron or anything of the sort. It was actually applying a PVA (polyvinylacetate) glue to some parts of the upper structure to seal any remaining contaminated dust in, so that it could be removed safely before they assembled the upper parts of the sarcophagus.
    3. Radiation levels in the air above the structure were negligible at this point. What caused the helicopter to crash was that it struck some crane wires, the cranes that were assembling said sarcophagus. The pilot got disoriented for a moment due to sun glare and got too close to the crane.
    4. The (original) footage was captured by a news crew from West Siberian News (the cameraman was Victor Grebenyuk), and was never lost or anything.

    Probaply a mercy for those in the copter to have it crash immediately after that amount of radiation exposure

      The plume of fume was emmiting around 1500 roengten/hour, it was in reallity very small, almist hard to see..
      there is at least an helicopter who flew directly in it, the pilot name was Sergei Volodin. He was hospitalised in Kiev and the legend say he was mostly treated whit alcohol since they didn't knew how to deal whit radiation sickness ( not like Moscow specialised hospital ) . He survived and worked on the exclusion zone again.

      @@johansmallberries9874 yes but they had attempted to minimize exposure time. I can't imagine how you could do that with the crane.

      lead panel the crane cabin, full protective suit for a series of operators that would be directed via radio, I'm sure there's flaws to that plan, but that can clearly be said for this aerial crop dusting method. Besides, this show has demonstrated that they were willing to forfeit hundreds of lives for the greater good.

      One of the main problems with trying to use a siege engine (like a catapult or trebuchet) to lob things in is construction time (to say nothing of the mechanical and skill difficulties) and needed proximity for a long duration.
      Lots of options open up if you're not under a time crunch, but if you are, you have to make do with the resources you have.
