Yes, the kids who Gyomii was trying to protect ran and were killed but most of the others (except sayo) were killed directly by the demon when they were sleeping.

I started to cry when I saw Tanjiro crying because he was affected by Gyomi's past, but Gyomi patted his head, and here Tanjiro smiled because Tanjiro had not felt this feeling for two years, since his family died, and Tanjiro is in the end a child, so here he remembers his parents, just as Gyomi remembers Sayo and the orphaned children. In the end, they both wanted to live a happy life with him. Their families, but their wish was not fulfilled. Just thinking that Tanjiro is still a child and how he smiled at that moment makes me start to get emotional and my tears start to fall without realizing it. My heart really melts❤😢😍

Of all that has happened in Tanjiro’s life, Gyomei patting and rubbing his head like a child is exactly what he needed: the reassurance and warmth of a paternal figure. It was probably the first time in years that he could finally experience what it was like to be a kid again. This scene was so wholesome that I started to tear up.
