Marc "Animal' MacYoung, said that back in the 70s, before street gangs got money running drugs to get guns, in Venice Beach they kept having gang fights outside a certain barber shop, until the barber started busting up the rumbles with a 10' bullwhip.

So you're Anthony De Longis? I hope someday you'll train ME how to use a whip. Like how you trained Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman (Batman Returns: 1992) and Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones: 1981-2023)

De Longis knows about a lot of stuff with blades and martial arts, but he has his limits here and does not incorporate any of the developments from the Australian whipcrackers. Check out Ben Hughes or Adam Winrich for some more serious work with whips which far surpasses this. Well balanced whips are capable of point to point cracking in volley type work in various changing planes, on all sides of the body. This video highlights just a basic stylized American bullwhip swing, cut and flick type technique which can be done with whips which are poorly balanced. Hopefully someday the good stuff will make it into a well done movie.

His opinion on the bullwhip as a weapon is the only thing I don't agree with when it comes to De Longis and whip cracking. I agree wholeheartedly with Daren Wilkerson (a fellow whip enthusiast and hobbyist) that it's a great hobby but "only a fool would carry a bullwhip looking for trouble". I love my bullwhip and I practice with it every day but in all honesty as a weapon it's very impractical. It is however a fantastic and I mean fantastic deterrent. I have had people stay back and get a bit freaked when I cracked it. It does scare dogs and other animals so as a deterrent against things that would do you harm It's fantastic. I honestly think you would be crazy to approach a foe carrying a bullwhip but as a fully functional weapon I don't agree that its a good one. If you were dealing with one foe than yeah maybe but against multiple foes I wouldn't choose the bullwhip over something else. It's a great hobby I love my bullwhip to death and as a hobby it is probably the best hobby i've found. As a weapon I don't think it's practical at all and I mean at all. It is a powerful tool in fact when I was first starting out I cracked the whip above my head and sliced a solid metal fan right in two. It's a very powerful tool and I'm sure that if you were to dedicate your life to "tactical and combative" whip cracking it might make a good weapon. However I feel it's only a great hobby and tool. Even Indiana Jones doesn't use it as a weapon but instead a tool to disarm or deter. The entire Cairo scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark is a deterrent scene. Indy isn't using the whip as a weapon he's just using it to keep people at bay. The bullwhip is a great hobby and deterrent of foes but not as a weapon against foes.

Malcolm Reynolds you could use it as a weapon if you are not going against an armed enemy

If you mean as a mainstay weapon in an untrained hand, or as a lethal option to "end" an opponent, I agree. But.. with enough practice it could come in handy in certain situations. Ever been hit with a whip (I assume you have)? It doesn't feel very nice, and it can leave a painful and nasty welt.

Anything can be used as a weapon a bullwhip included, and if there is anyone who may be able to pull it off, it is arguably Anthony De Longis. I mean no disrespect to the man, he is obviously very skilled with a whip, but I do think if a determined attacker managed to get in close with a knife you would be at a disadvantage to say the least, especially if he knew how to use it. And your opponent had a gun well what is there to say?
If I was serious about defending myself I would invest in weapons training (knives, guns) and or unarmed combat of some kind like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
A good teacher also once told me the best defence is 100 meters....

The whip is versatile, but even Indiana Jones carries a gun.

I know the Indiana Jones movies they used kangaroo hide bullwhips from David Morgan, so I assume that's what Anthony uses. Anyone got a spare $800?
