    This is Sick, I’ve been using a modern Flecktarn shelter half when I go camping recently, been eyeing getting one or two these so my friends and I can make tents and carry our shelter way easier. Thanks for not just a slight history lesson but actually demonstrating how it works too, we need more videos like yours!

    It's a very good for a multi-purpose cover to make a tent better than the USGI shelter half which is heavy and stinky. I only carried two light weight ponchos when I was in the US Army as an infantryman, one to cover me and the other to cover my ruck sack. Very interesting to see it used out in the field and the camouflage pattern is very effective. Now I just have the East German Zeltbahn which I haven't used yet. I saw a guy on one video use bees wax to water proof the Zeltbahn and melting it and spreading it with a blow dryer.

      The Most important thing is, that you HAVE Something when you Go out 😉 then there are better and Not so good Options, i agree.
      Yeah, using beeswax and a blower is a very oldschool way of getting things waterproof and it works! There are some other recipes out there with Terpentine and other ingridients.

    • @germanredneck9019
      @germanredneck9019  3 месяца назад +1

      Sry for the late reply.
      I know three Methods:
      1. The oldschool variant:
      Get beeswax warmed up to make it liquid. Pour in some Terpentine and maybe other stuff. Let it cool down. Spread it on the zeltbahn. Use hair blower Go get it in the zeltbahn.
      Pro: makes the zeltbahn very waterproof!
      Contra: colours will get much darker, Zeltbahn Will get very stiff.
      2. Impregnation Spray:
      Simply Spray it in the zeltbahn and let it dry.
      Tipp: but the Zeltbahn in a garbage bag and close it tight for 24 hours.
      Then the impregnation will Go much deeper in!
      Pro: fast apply, No much effort and cheap.
      Contra: wount Held Up Long Time.
      3. Liquid impregnation:
      Get some liquid impregnation thats Not in a Spray can. Read instructions on the bottle.
      Pour the stuff in a bucket, fill Up with water and put Zeltbahn in. Hang it Up and let it dry.
      Pro: No aerosoles will be breathed in, works fine.
      Contra: ???
      I did it once and it worked.
      I would def try method 3 or 2.
      Hope it will Help.
      All the best,
      Your GR 🤙🏼

    Why did they call pattern 31 ''Splinter pattern'' ? Always wondered about the origin of that name.

    • @germanredneck9019
      @germanredneck9019  11 месяцев назад +6

      Hello survivalcommano, 31 because of it came into service in 1931 or 32, and the original name was "Buntarbendruck 31" - colorful print 31. Also it was called "Heeressplittermuster 31" -Armysplinterpattern 31.
      Splitter is German for splinter. Like the Sharp Edge pieces that come when Glas brakes... The pattern has the Brown and Green sharp edge Splinters - "Splitter"... I guess thats why!
      I Hope you know what i try to say!

    • @germanredneck9019
      @germanredneck9019  9 месяцев назад +3

      Vielen Dank für Deinen Kommentar und das Lob☺️
      Hergestellt aus Baumwolle. Ich glaube Maco Stoff oder so ähnlich wurde er genannt und er wurde mit einem bestimmten Mittel imprägniert auf dessen Namen ich jetzt gerade leider nicht komme!
      Durch die Imprägnierung war sie gut wasserdicht. Sollte mal die Imprägnierung abgerieben sein, hat sich der Maco Stoff mit Wasser vollgesaugt und kein weiteres Wasser durchgelassen. Irgendwann waren sie sicherlich auch mal durch. Oder hatten Löcher... Also kein Allheilmittel aber sicherlich eine gute Sache.
      Ich habe sie auch immer dabei wenn ich rausgehe. Entweder die Repro Eichentarn oder jetzt neuerdings eine originale in Splittertarn.
      Ich mag die Dinger!
