Very well researched, thank you for creating this! I especially liked the "baker - point of view", showing that there are so much more people affected by war. ... And you are always able to get some positivity even out of the horrendous situations. That is a great asset that you've got there.
Thanks for the interesting vlog. Some facts about the bombs: There isn't much residential radiation in Hiroshima or Nagasaki because the nuclear bombs where exploded high in the atmosphere. This wasn't don't out of consideration but for maximizing the destruction. When the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima a man called Tsutomu Yamaguchi was there for a business trip. He survived and returned to his home town Nagasaki only to survive the second bomb three days later
Taught my first ESL classes ,as a young Marine, in Hiroshima, on the weekends. My frequent visits to downtown Hiroshima and the park area left a lasting impression on me. Glad you are able to visit and share this important place.
Such a devastating point in history WWII was. So many lives pointlessly lost, just because some so called "leaders" wanted things their way with the rest of the world. Thank you for this somber look at such a unique moment in time.
" 'Nucular' is a commonly used metathetic form of the word "nuclear". While no dictionaries list this particular pronunciation as correct, several make mention of it because of its increased usage. "
It seems that there's an abundance of people in the world today who are beating the drums of war. The scary thing is that many of these people have never experienced war or even real hardship. A very relavant vlog. Thanks Matt.
Just visited Berlin. I was standing in the Mall of Berlin- people shopping, music playing, staged dancing- all lovely. 40 odd years ago I imagined I was in the death strip between the two walls. Mind blowing - so as you say at the beginning of the video- imagine you’re there
The bombing of Hiroshima wasn’t a tragedy, it was an intentional act to end the war and saved the lives of millions of Japanese and 1 million Allied troops. The only tragedy is rhe acts of aggression on behalf of the Japanese leadership beginning at Pearl.
The war was over. The bombing of Tokyo caused more casualties than the a bomb in hiroshima. The Japanese had almost no air defence. The Sowjet Union declared war on Japan and captured really fast big parts of Asia. In Japan was famine. And they couldn't produce weapons in large numbers. It was only a matter of time Japan surrenders. But the a bomb was also a sign to the UdSSR. Which had at that time the strongest military Force
Visited there in Aug '18 and they had THE Trolley cars that were there at the time, restored, of course but amazing none the less. Surprised to learn that School Children are NOT taught the truth about the war. Even still, As an American with a Chinese Wife, We experienced No animosity in our 2 week stay from Tokyo though Hiroshima to Miyajimacho. Will go back again!
Great job! Strange. My dad was saved from certain death by the dropping of Fat Man and Little Boy. But he never applauded their use. In talking with him late in his life I am convinced he would rather have died in combat than so many be killed. The invasion of Honshū was to be his 3rd amphibious landing. Okinawa, Cebu (Philippenes) then Honshū. Elements of the 77th ID trained on Cebu for it. He was a squad leader on an 81mm mortar squad, having been reassigned from the 51st Combat Military Police at the end of hostilities on Okinawa. Casualties of first landing forces on Honshū were expected to be in the 90% area. Also, you have been to Hakodate on Hokkaido. His unit garrisoned there after the war for a few months. Once again, great job.
I did a quick Google image search and found an image of that same building. There is nothing but rubble around it. Its sobering to see that area now verses that day.
That building isn’t still standing because of the way it was built with reinforced steel, it was still standing because the bomb detonated around half a kilometre above that building so that the fall out would cover a lot more area of the city and it would do a lot more damage than that if it hit the ground.
as mankind goes thru the centuries, things get lost in time. time changes everything. we only live maybe if we are very lucky a century. Matt made a point in his vlgo about time. Time heals because those that experienced all this are dead. the new generation does not know it. we know the now.
Can I just correct you please? The bridge was not the intended target, but merely served as an aiming point for the bomb. It then exploded at height to maximize the destructive force it unleashed! J
The actual hypocenter of the bomb was directly above the Shima Hospital. It was completely destroyed, and everyone in it was killed. In 1948, the hospital was rebuilt from the ground up by Dr. Kaoru Shima.
I was born Aug 6th 1965, 20 years after the fact , Hiroshima was still talk about for another 30 some year`s , When i was old enough to understand what happon at Hiroshima , i was reminded of that horrible day on my birthday, there was no way of avoiding it, it was on the TV on the Radio in the paper`s my birthday the day 100.000 people vanish in the blink of an eye and many more 100,000`s to die later of the bomb effects,,,, Nagasaki was devastated to a few days later only because it was not cloudy,,,, the first target that day was cloudy so Nagasaki was on the list of secondary target only because it had clear sky`s good visibility it had to be,,,They wanted to film there new toy :( the Japanese were on verge of collapse and where trying to start talks of surrender, but decision to drop the bomb`s was a political event not strategic , Truman stated that his decision to drop the bomb was purely military but that was bull..... they could not wait to show them off to Russia, it was the first shots of the Cold War :(
The fire bombing of Tokyo was the worst conventional bombing raid of WW2. With over 100 000 killed. If it wasn't for the atomic bomb this would be the fate of Japans major centers.
Of course it is he is literally standing on top the ashes of 10's of thousands of people. Of course it is not his fault but it would be hard not to think about it especially with this whole NK thing happening.
Wrong assumption, Shin. I actually don't care. But I WOULD like to know why this is such a big deal for you. Why are you so insecure that you're taking this personally? It isn't about you. Go away and find someone else to pester... or just get a life!
Okay... now you've devolved to name-calling and you're making yourself look bad. Time to stop this ridiculous thread so this is my last post. Have a good day.
yes the Tokyo firebombing was equally horrific but an island hopping endless war equally bad the atrocities by the Japanese in Asia needs to be acknowledged the current generations have nothing to do with that time both west and east be nice respect to fellow humans =peace my thoughts
Andrew Bristoe *The current Japanese generation are fooled by their government. Japanese government has been constantly downplaying or even hiding their wartime crimes* .
Seems to me Japan needs to get "introspective " of the Bataan Death March and the rape of Nanking as we Americans are introspective of the atomic bombings. Yeah....I thought the commenters on this video would have nothing constructive to say...
I'll be honest its a wonder we didn't have to kill them all I mean they had kamakazi bombers think about that! they are a proud people I can't believe they surrendered course after the A bombs USA waa gonna drop a 3rd one on Tokyo and they had the Russians coming to so they would've been all been in very bad shape guess they finally seen that ..sad we had to do that to them but they did bomb pearl habor that was a coward act
People who think civilians Japanese in that period of time were innocent are so ignorant . They underestimate the state of mind of all Japanese in that time. Women and children all support their war against their war opponents.women supporting the war by making guns, clothe for their soldiers, boys being trained to be killing machine to be ready join battle in their early teen. The whole country was in a insane state of mantality.

I thought u were going to get through the entire video without having to say Hiroshima... but I guess u had to and it's "hero-shima", not the way you say it. But I guess it was a good try. lol

Incredible! I didn't know that was possible.

Seeing people wandering places I frequent so often like Hiroshima, I look to see if it was a day I was near by too.
It seems that there's an abundance of people in the world today who are beating the drums of war. The scary thing is that many of these people have never experienced war or even real hardship.
A very relavant vlog. Thanks Matt.
I know it's been a while since you made this vlog but you did a really good job putting this together.
Just visited Berlin. I was standing in the Mall of Berlin- people shopping, music playing, staged dancing- all lovely. 40 odd years ago I imagined I was in the death strip between the two walls. Mind blowing - so as you say at the beginning of the video- imagine you’re there
Hiroshima is phoenix that's emerging from fire
Great storytelling and great context. Excellent job bro!
Thanks boss. I was trying to talk about it from a different angle.
The bombing of Hiroshima wasn’t a tragedy, it was an intentional act to end the war and saved the lives of millions of Japanese and 1 million Allied troops. The only tragedy is rhe acts of aggression on behalf of the Japanese leadership beginning at Pearl.

Beginning at Pearl Harbor ???
@@Stuffnsuch736 Sounds correct to me. It started at Pearl and ended at Hiroshima. Unfortunate for all that it happened.
@@stanlee7635 Japanese aggression started well before Pearl Harbor bro , they were commuting genocides in Asia for decades before Pearl Harbor.
@@Stuffnsuch736 I’m saying the war with the US started as a result of Pearl.
Had to use it to help end the war,it sure did lite in up!
Thank you Matt for the the look into the city i pray that in approx 75 years from now someone is not doing a tour like this well done made me think.
Enjoyed this one.. Nicely done.
Well done. Very insightful. Been there twice and still am amazed at what happened there. Thanks for sharing!
Really great video!
Brilliant Matt.

Thank you for sharing this. He is a hero... no matter the end result or what happened. Cannot love in the past but must remember it.
Thanks! Keep up the good work! We’re enjoying your travels!
Awesome job👍. Learnt the history from you.
JaYoe, nicely done. Thank you
very entertaining and informative

Actually, an air burst at that height reduces the amount of fallout, while increasing the area of destruction from the blast wave.
Thank you for this video Matt. TOUGH subject matter but something we need to keep our eyes open to.
Fantastic video. Thanks for this
Your VLOG's are very good
these are my favorite videos on youtube
Ah yes you managed to say Hiroshima properly at 5:13. Keep it up.
Well I could spell it properly without using google translate cuz I’m japanese 広島
as mankind goes thru the centuries, things get lost in time. time changes everything. we only live maybe if we are very lucky a century. Matt made a point in his vlgo about time. Time heals because those that experienced all this are dead. the new generation does not know it. we know the now.
Wow this video has some travelogue vibes for me, reminds me of the old days..
they did not drop bomb`s on Hiroshima in order to keep the city intact... the yanks want to see the effects of Little Boy when it was drop :(
uhfnutbar1 Well said.
True statement but the bombs actually saved millions of Japanese lives by forcing Hirohito to intervene.
Bonn Stevens it also saved Japan cuz then they would still be fascist
Thank you Matt. The emotion of this episode causes me to reflect on my times in Nanjing. Thank you for yet another great production ! 加油:)
Can I just correct you please? The bridge was not the intended target, but merely served as an aiming point for the bomb. It then exploded at height to maximize the destructive force it unleashed! J
What a beautiful tintinabulation to end a thoughtful video.
Good video a piece of history and about lives lost on both sides and men who fought for our freedom🇺🇸
Good stuff ...no political mumbo jumbo ..just good historic facts .
Wow Matt really interesting.. Thank you..
Matt, will you go to Nanjing one day and tell us about the even bigger loss of life the population experienced at the hands of the Japanese?
The actual hypocenter of the bomb was directly above the Shima Hospital. It was completely destroyed, and everyone in it was killed. In 1948, the hospital was rebuilt from the ground up by Dr. Kaoru Shima.
Very well done. Thank you.
Well produced video Matt! You could do well as an information video person (whatever they are called).
In 1988 I visited Hiroshima and talked to a woman who was within one mile of the blast.
Awesome Thanks for sharing this 🔴👍👍👍👍🔴

Well it was a WORLD WAR and nobody can deny war is horrific but the US did not start this war.
The fire bombing of Tokyo was the worst conventional bombing raid of WW2. With over 100 000 killed. If it wasn't for the atomic bomb this would be the fate of Japans major centers.
super wow! who would have ever known. this was herenduss to say the very least.
I love Japan!!!
Nobody had tv's in 1945.
Interesting! Could easily have been longer.
@the JaYoe Nation. Sure sounds like you were saying it was wrong.
Matt, you don't need to apologize to japanese people, coz you didn't threw that bomb.the atmosphere of this episode is kind of serious.
Of course it is he is literally standing on top the ashes of 10's of thousands of people. Of course it is not his fault but it would be hard not to think about it especially with this whole NK thing happening.
You did a great job on this one, Matt. But please, it's pronounced "NOO-KLEE-ER" not "NOOK-YOU-LER".
Shin... You know nothing about what I know. But I do cringe every time I hear someone say "NOOK-YOU-LER".
Wrong assumption, Shin. I actually don't care. But I WOULD like to know why this is such a big deal for you. Why are you so insecure that you're taking this personally? It isn't about you. Go away and find someone else to pester... or just get a life!

War is bad, terrible, and miserable. Hope Japanese gov thinks the same way about what they had done in China between 1930-1945.
Yup. I hope we all look at our past and try never to do the horrible things we have done before.
Yan Huang Well said
nope, people never learn.

And sadly, CCP regime are looking for this kind of tragedy happen again it’s soil.
CCP, the malignant tumor of our planet.
Yes they learnt and implement but you morons have same 扩张 thinking yet
Actually the way you pronounce atomic... Ok just kidding. But I'm watching you tho. ;)
Next time you better look at the camera lens instead of looking at the display hoping you look okay.
yes the Tokyo firebombing was equally horrific but an island hopping endless war equally bad the atrocities by the Japanese in Asia needs to be acknowledged the current generations have nothing to do with that time both west and east be nice respect to fellow humans =peace my thoughts
Andrew Bristoe *The current Japanese generation are fooled by their government. Japanese government has been constantly downplaying or even hiding their wartime crimes* .
agreed
it saved millions though in the end. if it was not for the bomb, we would of had invaded Japan and that could of gone real bad, real quick.
