In my ears the new ISOLO PRIME sounds a little bit fuller and smoother in comparison to the current ISOLO CHOICE system. Another advantage: The new PRIME mic is specificated to withstand up to 140db, so it's definitely the better choice for loud saxophone or trumpet players. And it has a cardoid polar pattern, which is a further advantage on loud stages and environments, there is less danger of feedbacks.
You took the words right out of my fingertips! :) I have used the CHOICE for about a year and love it, but the areas that you mentioned here are on-point with the improvements that needed to be made. Just a couple of nitpicking improvements that I would like to see in the future are......make the case just a bit smaller, so that it fits comfortably in my sax case without it being too snug and feeling like it's forced, to lock it in the sax case and carry even less. Also, a clip-on accessory option. The output cable could be a little longer as well. But, again, I'm nitpicking. I have preordered my PRIME and I can't wait to get it dialed in!!! I also use a SHURE GLXD14 with the BETA98H/C. With the improvements to the ISOLO, it should be a very close comparison now ;) Saxalot, Rich
Nigel, thank you very much for the comparison. To my ears the new Prime model seems to have a narrower pick up pattern then the old model, this makes it sound more dry which is a very good thing.
Definitely convenient having essentially an all-in-one package, but I'd love to see where it sits against another bell mic (like the shure beta 98h/c for example)
You probably dont care but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times then you can stream all of the latest movies and series on Instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my brother for the last couple of weeks :)

I really liked the prime, but I would have like to hear it in a more live type surrounding to see what the surround sound cancelation is like.. great review though, thanks Nigel.
I had just ordered the older version of the isolo a few days ago and honestly I wish I had seen your video before purchasing it. A hundred dollars for a much better sound and 4 more effects, I would have definitely gotten the prime one. Anyway keep up the good work and thank you for the amazing content!!😀
I have the CHOICE. The PRIME definitely sounds better. The CHOICE is a bit more muted and dull. Especially at the top and bottom ends. I hope they do an upgrade option! But the CHOICE is totally fine for gigs. The PRIME might work well in a simple studio setting and recording yourself for Sax School.
I now have the ISOLO Prime great piece of kit Nigel's review was really helpful in my decision between the choice or the prime I am experimenting with the different effects 7&8 seem a good fit with blues tunes

Hi. What would be better for me, this Isolo prime or the NUX B6 wireless system for playing in a band (ska, reggae and Motown) I need to buy a microphone pretty soon. First gig in April.
I thought there was quite a lot of handling noise (key clicks and so on) on these mics. That can be a problem with clip on. I'm not sure whether the audience would notice it on a live gig but it wouldn't work too well in the studio.
In comparison with stand microphones clip on mics always have more handling and key noise, because they are mounted on the instrument itself - even very expensive clip mics like AMT, DPA or SD Systems. I had the opportunity to compare the ISOLO CHOICE wireless mic vs. expensive clip mics like the DPA and AMT LS, AMT P808 and AMT TA-6, and also the cheaper AKG and the current SAMSON model, which unfortunately has a lot of handling and key noise. There is definitely not more handling noise at the ISOLO mic vs. these mics. You can percieve the key noise, if you record a single saxophone alone, if you are playing in a band context live it doesn't play a role, also for recording or streaming social media content the ISOLO mic is a great choice.
@@saxymike58 , I use an old Audio Technica which I find to be very quiet in terms of handling noise on my live gigs. I also have a Carol wired clip on which I have successfully used for recording. I agree with you about the AKG - I bought one but gotta refund some years ago because of the noise. I see you are distributing the Isolo - I'm just a punter with no vested interest!
@@BobBattyMusik Yes, you are right, I am the distributor of CLOUDVOCAL and AMT mics in Germany, but I am also a musician and saxophone player, who has experience playing live gigs with different mic brands since the 80ties. I try to point this out using different accounts in my comments. If I spoke as a distributor, I'm using my SAX-ess business account, and if I leave comments telling my experiences as musician, I'm using my private account. Seems your Audio Technica mic is doing also a good job, nevertheless I for myself prefer for live gigs a wireless mic, which doesn't require an extra bodypack transmitter.
Great review, very tempting product! I play a lot with DJs and interact with people on the dance floor as I play so for a lot of gigs I'm fairly far from my receiver. I've not been able to find any reviews that cover this product's range so if you have any experience with it in large areas with limited line-of-sight that would be really helpful to know! My current setup is great but is super bulky, needs a mic pack/pedal board/lots of cables so if this covers good range too it's perfect. Let me know! Cheers!
Feel ya, Same here! I have a AMT Q7 LS and a TC Helicon VoiceLive 3 Extreme, which is super quality (except for the Wireless System of AMT compared to a proper Sennheiser 😅), but carying around all this stuff to little gigs, where I can't use or don't need an IEM System anyway, is just annoying. A small all-in-one like this would be heaven - if the wireless transmission is stable, even without line of sight for at least for a couple of meters behind people. Wasn't convinced of the sound of the previous "choice", but with the better capsule and with the added effect of "reverb+delay" now, I'm quite sold. I guess, I just have to buy and try!
@@gregorfindeisen So I messaged a couple other sax players who use the prime as their main workhorse and they seem to swear by it, saying they've had no problem with the range/ line of sight. Jason Whitmore says: "that's exactly the kind of environment I play in (Sax and DJ) and this has never let me down. I've used it for somewhere around 60 feet from the transmitter and in crowded places and have never had any range issues." Gabriel Bello says: "I have been able to get pretty close the range limit of 30 meters with the directional antenna, coming off stage and getting in a crowd. I've also had the receiver behind stage curtain about 10-15 meters away with no issues. I only bring my pedal board for big shows now, everything else its the ISolo Prime!" Seems like a winner... should have the funds in a couple weeks so I'll report back, might do a video demo...
I have to admit that like another Comment, The Choice did sound warmer than the Prime. But overall, a great product. I love the built in effects and even harmonizer. FX are something I don't have on my Shure set-up. I have to depend on the sound man or mixer FX. And I'll also echo a precious comment on testing the Prime vs a Shure. Thanks so much for the review.
You are right Frank I initially thought the Prime was more treble than the smooth bass of the choice but you can't fault the extended selections on the Prime
Can anyone recommend a sax mic (not necessarily wireless) that doesn't cost more than my tenor sax is actually worth? Or should I just carry on using my iPhone ...?
Hi David. Lots of choices - the trade off with price is generally sound quality. Also it depends what you are using the mic for. I like the CloudVocal mic because you can get the USB interface with it which means you can record directly into your computer. You could buy a cheaper wired mic but if your goal is to record then you will also need an audio interface to be able to connect the mic to the computer. More info on recording setups if you need it on my blog here: www.mcgillmusic.com/articles/my-recording-setup/
Sorry, I forgot to ask: Are there multiple clips so a player can move the mic from horn to horn on stage so (each horn, say Alto, Tenor, Soprano for example) would have a clip?
They included two spare clips and also a velcro belt to mount the mic on clarinet or flute. But it's easy to put the whole mic transmitter including the clip from one instrument to another. And you also increase the lifetime of the velcro this way.
Good question. I haven’t tested that yet, but I’m sure it will work great. Also nice that the mic is very light which will help with the balance on soprano.
I use the new prime version. I love it for live gigs. I can switch the microphone to my tenor, alto, soprano, bari and flute very quickly with the provided clips and I have the mixer at my fingertips for adjusting volume for flute. Overall a great product. I like to move around and sometimes go into the crowd and do a sax dance with someone dancing! Great freedom and easy to use. I do have a gkquestion about pre amp gain setting on the microphone transmitter unit? What setting should you use? Options are -44db. -36db and -29db. I have it set to -36db and it seems fine. Just a mystery I would like to have an answer for. Take care and keep up the great work and Stellar sax playing! Dan
