That’s the first weight relief Les Paul ever! That woman was way ahead of her time.
She’s a great example of a player versus collector. I don’t care about the next guy who owns my stuff either. She’s awesome 🤘
I'll have to say that guitar was not "Professionally Refinished" unless it was done by a Professional Shoemaker
Looks more like an Earl Scheib paint job. They didn't even mask off/scrape the binding.
That guitar was painted with a giant old house paint brush and probably house paint as well. It’s a mess.
It looks like shit. 😀
@@drippinglass You get right to the point!
@@nellayema2455 yeah no doubt but the binding would be the last of my concerns. I saw another video of this guitar and it did sound pretty incredible. The mods kill it for me though.
Joe bought an all original 1941 Martin 000-45 from the Guitar Center I work at a few months back. He calls it "The Attic" Martin because it was stored in the attic for years from the family that sold it to us. It was owned by 1 family for 3 generations in Southern California. He vowed to keep this guitar in Southern California for as long as he owns it (at Nerdville West). If I remember correctly, we tagged it at $100k. It would not surprise me if Joe did end up buying this Les Paul.
A vintage guitar without a story is just a old guitar, a vintage Les Paul with a story like that should be in a museum
If anyone want to lend me an old guitar, I'll write a story on it with a rusty screwdriver and a hacksaw. It might have a sad ending though.
@@charlesrense5199 oh hell no, just sell it to these fools that like heavy relic at a premium!
I love stories like this. Musicians did not buy guitars in the 50's or 60's based upon a potential resale value in the future. It was what they used to make a living and support their family or themselves. That is the difference between a musician and a guitar player. I mean look at SRV's #1. That thing looks like it was run over by a truck, or the Frankie Strat, a $200 parts guitar that is basically priceless. Also, back then there was not online guitar stores where you can find parts at any time, this was new technology at the time, so maybe that is the reason for some of the "rough" looking stuff. Les Pauls at that time were not really considered top of the line either, that was still the realm of the big archtops in the early 50's. Remember the 59 LP's were considered failures at the time, it took about 10 years for them to become what they are viewed as now.
The only reason 59 Les Pauls became popular then was because of who was playing them. Those players bought them because they sounded great and were affordable used guitars. All the great Gibson players in the UK benefited from the fact that Gibson had better overseas distribution than Fender.
She was a real Les Paul fan too at the time. Probably inspired by him, Les was always turning his guitars into Dr Frankenstein creations. I mean he put microphone jacks on his upper bouts for goodness' sake.
@@sydrose13 The Les Paul story that always makes me laugh and think is that while all the guitarist since at least the 60's have tried to get the most distortion and feedback out of their gear, he was the direct opposite and did everything he could to make his guitar sound clean as possible. I always find that interesting about his playing style.
@@seanquigg4909 totally! He really was a jazz and 'pop' guy. My local shop had an old Les Paul show up with original flat wounds on it from the time. They really became something he didn't expect I'm sure
You raise a good point that I make quite a lot when talking guitar shop. If people saw Albert King's guitar they would never imagine the thing would tune properly much less sound like anything worth listening to. SRV's strat guitar, as you say, would be considered unplayable by most guitar player's standards... and that's not even accounting for the rusty bridge cables he used for strings
Crazy mods! The full back plate looks like a piece of Formica countertop laminate, and the paint looks like it’s straight rattle can! But, you just can’t beat the story and the history of this Les’!
I’ve got a dining room table from the 50s that looks very similar
Agree... rattle can paint. Shitty paint job. But it is part of the story.. a hard worked gigging guitar with scars and a 'life'
That's a guitar with a story...that's something that should go to her town's museum because DAMN that's some local history!
If I had the scratch to buy this guitar, I would let her keep and play it and only take delivery once she leaves this mortal coil. I feel like she’s had it for so long I would only be right for her to not part with it.
Awesome story.
I agree.
Yes I also agree
Well said!
I would have given her 1 million dollars and then never even bothered to take the guitar. Do I win for being generous with money I don’t have in hypothetical situations ?
She left it in the case for decades, she doesn't give a shit about it. She thinks the headstock broke itself because shes a woman.
Toggle switches added for the nitro boost
Bonamassa was the ONLY name that came to mind for this sale. Has to be. He'll put that on display at Nerdville. It's got a great story, and that's what he's always said he loves.
He said in 2018 he does not have a Reverb account. He does like a good story.
@@stringspicksandfiddlestick6388 I mean it was only bought right after they posted it on Instagram which he’s fairly active one so🤷🏻♂️
He is a nerd .
Really proficient guitar player but no soul
Hes been doing what daddy trained him to do all his life ..
Hes the Tiger Woods of guitar players
One day he will melt down and lose his marbles ..WATCH
Only other I can think of is Billy Gibbons
@ ...where did that come from? It went from "He's a nerd who likes stories and guitars" to "I ANXIOUSLY AWAIT HIS INEVITABLE PSYCHOLOGICAL BREAKDOWN!!!!!" in like 2.3 seconds. Call Guinness, that has to be a record or something.
I've got a 70s vintage Deluxe that developed a head stock crack like that.
It gradually grew over a couple of decades and never completely separated.
I was able to remove the vernier and repair it almost invisibly.
This lady probably knew my dad and other family members I've never met in Hot Springs, Arkansas. My dad was a popular local musician and my grandfather bred race horses there! 😃
What's funny here, is that she did exactly what Les Paul himself always did. Heavily modified her guitar to suit her own needs and comfort, so that she could get the most out of it to make her music. I LOVE IT that she did that.✌
One of the more interesting aspects of being a guitar player is seeing what others have done to customize their instruments.
At the end of the day modifications both good and bad really have shaped the guitars we all love and play today.
Cool Story, I'd really enjoy seeing a video/movie of one of her performances.
Facts. Les Paul would have LOVED to see this. He was a notorious mod guy and after all, that's how electric guitars were invented in the first place.
@@neilpatrickhairless 100% Agreed, very good point Dean.
Given how much of an admirer this woman (original owner) was of Les Paul the Man I'm sure it was he that inspired her mods.
What a fantastic tribute and inspiration for the cause of making music.
Yup, valued high because of the known provenance of one owner and unique mods. Any collector (not trader) would be pleased to have this.
Story on top of a story + GUITARS!!!! Just listening to you narrate all this is so entertaining as well as relaxing. Thank you for making this channel for us all.
Crazy cool! Just a clarification: Gretsch guitars had a pad on the back of models featuring a back panel that allowed installation and adjustment of the mute mechanism that some models like the Country Gent, Falcon and Nashville came with. It was never issued on models that had no back plate and had nothing to do with buckle-rash.
OH I SAW ABOUT THIS! Wild story, and quite rare to find a Goldie from ORIGINAL OWNER, let alone one from a moderately well known band. I think I have one of their records lying about somewhere...
Greetings and well wishes from Utah man!
I love players who mod thier guitars to make them keep playing and to get what you want out of them.
Wow! Safety Harbor is just six miles from where I live! Who knew this piece of history was so close??
why would anyone ruin this guitar just to turn it into a stock les paul. buy an unmodded one for christ sake :/
the history alone is worth it.
Made me cry. Not easy to do. Beautiful, a whole life in a wooden box with strings...
Love that story. And I have lived in Hot Springs, Arkansas. I’ve been to the horse racing track in Hot Springs (Oaklawn) multiple times. I can just imagine her step dad having a big win and giving her the money for the guitar!
Without the story and the authentication and one owner star status this guitar would be worth about 1K if your lucky. But with the real story I think $35K is cheap, well worth it !
these type of guitars are fast becoming museum pieces, people sense that and thats why guitars in this condition sell for so much.
Seen a video a couple days ago where she let some guy play that guitar. MAN what fantastic sound!! Thru a lil old nuthin peavey amp that thing sounded great.
I think the story trumped the guitar. I saw the other video and she is an innovator and one off human!! A genuine personality who did everything her way.
Im amazed how some players only ever use one Guitar thru their whole career...and what the product looks like at the end.And yes i also think its JB who bought it.
I was like that for the longest, when I got another guitar, I felt like I was cheating on my wife
I have the 2nd guitar I got in "85. I'm a lefty so I almost never part with my guitars.
JB wood glue ?
Trogly - Nylon saddles were available in the early 60s. My '63 Firebird VII has them, as does my brother's '61 Les Paul SG Standard.
IDK if you know but, if a Les Paul/Gibson falls forward and suddenly stops, the momentum of the head stock, string tension, and weight of the tuners can/will snap the neck. A dog brushing against it on a stand can do that too. The case is a great place for a Gibson guitar.
Hey Austin, In your price evaluation i think you're forgetting about the vintage collectors [with above average pockets] that prefer worn "turds" that have a story... Obviously Joe B has rescued a few... But there are many others out there as well. So great to see these beauties still loved and played regularly! The price is no surprise, especially considering how many rare guitars (and cars) have been selling for astronomical prices lately. How much over retail did you sell that Korina Explorer for?
I just bought a vintage photo of Les Paul and Mary Ford in an auction and browsed the sellers other vintage guitar related photos and found one from the late 50's/ early 60's of a lovely lady playing a Gibson gold top LP. The writing on the photo said "Lucky Linda and her Golden Guitar". It has stickers on the pickguard that spelled out "Lucky Linda". I did a little research and sure as shit it's the same guitar (pre-Bigsby and switch mod). I was able to contact Linda and she was thrilled to see it. I plan on sending her hard copies as soon as possible. Great story and Linda is a national treasure.💝🎵🎶☮ From a fellow Chicagoan💙💙💙💙
that one switch opens my garage door
I had a friend in his 80’s that had bought a 1952 brand new when he was a younger man. He played it in various bands. I emailed Joe with pictures of the guitar & it’s owner holding it & never heard anything from his company! My friend sold it through a local shop’s broker for $20,000.
This man’s ‘52 Goldtop was in great condition & all original.
I love that Shaun Hopper's name just appears out of nowhere. I've been wondering what he's doing, since there isn't anything new from him on RUclips for a while. I used to play his version of Overjoyed all the time...I need to go back and relearn it.
This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen.
Makes me think about Neil Young's "Old Black", also a very modified '53 Gold Top with the rattle can paint job.
Very cool story. I have an original 53 and definitely has one of the nicest necks I've ever felt on a Les Paul
Great story Trogly! I could see any of the people you mentioned buying this guitar. If I had to guess though I think it would be Joe Bonamassa.
Hopefully Epiphone issues this guitar as this year‘s Joe Bonamassa model!
@@larsfocken3456 that wouldn't make any sense at all
Tbh it looks kinda beat up compared to what he gets usually. And from what I have seen he stays away from refinished guitars.
I mean a gold top Les Paul with P-90 PUs in general. Not with all these mods of course.
A Bigsby would be great though. Just like the one David Gilmour played.
What a cool story and guitar, There's a unique charm to guitars that have been through the ringer and been extensively modified to do what a specific player needs it to do. Not to mention, as a guy who is a player and is kind of baffled at the value of some vintage guitars it does fill me with a little glee to know there are "purists" out there who are positively SEETHING at how she has "butchered" this guitar. Great video, really fun watch.
I saw the other video with the lady original owner present, while a guy was playing this same guitar. I was really impressed by what a warm full tone the guitar produced. I wouldn't be surprised if the buyer was drawn by the guitar's nice tone too!
I'm going to guess Rick Nielson, grabbed it through Robin Zander, since Robin lives in the same community as the seller.
Those saddles are metal, it's just the camera angle.
The beauty of a life lived, of the imperfections and the stories of its existence.
I heard this guitar being played on youtube a while back. Linda Lee was there to. But it was being played by another. It was tone perfection for a early model les paul. Wish I could afford it.
Its not a tone I'd want. Man, that guitar was BUZZY.
This a cool old guitar with an amazing story.
She was quite the character in the interview. She has a wonderful personality. I am glad she got the high money. She spent many years in her band and she also played other instruments.
Would have been nice if we heard her play, though.
I love guitars with a story and that one has one heck of a story behind it.
- 1952 Gibson Les Paul with a bunch of ugly modifications like extra holes, routings and switches, bigsby screwed on the top a headstock repair, refinished, etc... Played through a $50 practice amp: Found the meaning of "tone". Extreme mindblow to infinity and beyond.
- 2021 brand new Gibson Les Paul with push-pull pots: Customers freaking out due it isn't histerically correct.
to whomever had bought that classic Les Paul, may you be very blessed in owning and playing such and excellent guitar!! To the family who sold it also be very blessed!! Thank you Trogly in all that you do mate, rock on!!
It should be in a museum tbh. Let’s hope some blues lawyer doesn’t just stick it in a vault someplace never to be seen again.
That guitar was a tool, a workhorse. That makes it more special in my opinion.
Love the story behind this one and the mystery of who the buyer is!
Collectors: NOOOO you can't be heavily modded and not in case candy condition and break sales records!!!!!
Buyer: Ha Ha working guitar go BRRRRRRRR.
yeah i hate the fact that collectors only seem to care about original stuff. what would this be without the mods and story. just another old les paul.
$35K can either get you an entry level Kia or pretty much THE last word/mic drop in cool vintage guitars
Gibson tv has the interview and the guy plays the guitar it sounds great the toggles are for switching footpedals she says she played 6 days a week in heels. She was saving up to buy it and her father or uncle won some money gambling and gave her the money she needed to buy it in feb 53
I laughed out loud at “mamma-jamma”.
Definitely ... Bonamassa
He loves guitars with a story
It’s not really his speed though. He likes customizations that aren’t butchery. And the headstock repair would probably have him passing on it. Cool guitar though.
This guitar is a dog, and that’s being nice.
@@MrZachgonz DOG? it sounds killer even through a little peavy amp
Great video! Your enthusiasm is great. Thank you for a wonderful story!
could have “left it in standard tuning” in the case - but the case had come back from a gig and it broke in the case(?), similar to when shipping a guitar? Some people think you should detune when gigging/ traveling. OR, broke in case but mis-applying the detuning suggestion on acoustics (to slow the belly effect)? Either way sounds like some iteration of this, and after all she is a player not a tech….
great find either way, with a great history and documentation.
I would prefer my 54 with a neck repair all orig in case. Good finish except player right hand wear in a few patches all the way down to polished maple. Mine has a story too but not sure if it's true.
Trogly! You gotta update us on this!
Fantastic job. Interesting story about a very special guitar.
More guitar stories please.
I can just imagine it'll be a matter of time before the bottom falls out of the vintage market and everything everybody is emptying their bank balance to get their hands on falls back to where it was in the 80s.
My only hope is that we actually get to hear that thing in action.
That's the craziest guitar story I've heard in a LONG time. Super cool she got asking price.. I have a feeling you're probably correct on your guess of Joe being the buyer. I guess time will tell. Thanks for sharing!
I watched the original video a couple weeks ago. I immediately thought Bonamassa is gonna snag that thing. Not surprised now haha
Great story. I bet it is JB. I gotta get my LP in for your documentation! That would be a great attachment if i ever decide to sell....also a great way to feed ego! Lol.
Awesome story! Awesome axe! Awesome lady! Thanks for sharing this one Trog. Always a pleasure to hear from you.
I figure Rick Nielsen is quirky and nice enough also.
Great guitar. Love the switches. She said she was called Windy Lindy....she said because she talked a lot. She was from The Windy City
A very kind gesture to pay asking price for this unique piece of guitar history. Very cool mods as well. I know it's considered sacrilege to mod but if you planned to keep the instrument your whole life and gig with it for decades then you've earned it, imo.
You can see the modified milled down ABR bridge because of the neck angle on the first two years. The "TuneOmatic on this body was not an easy conversion for any guitar store cowboy. I have seen plenty of these since the early 70's..
Love how creative she was
That LP lived in my backyard 😱😱😱
May be a museum has bought it. Be a good addition to a good guitar/social history museum collection with the story.
Please do an update on this story I really want to know who bought it and I know I’ll forget to check on his channel but I watch yours regularly
Had an early 50s gold top in the store where I worked about 15 years ago. Sold for $27K.
I have a photo of my mother's band (The Stringbusters) where one of the guitar players is using a gold top Les Paul. The photo print has a commercial date stamp of 1962. Wonder where it is now?!!
I'm thinking Bonamassa or Agnici must've bought it. Or who knows Rick Neilson has a very interesting collection. I love your enthusiasm and love not only for the instruments you talk about and review but alsi the music they have or potentially have to display. And what it all represents.
I saw it on the gibbs family posting and the guitar sounded dreamy on even that little garbage peavy amp. I mean the sound was enough to make me wish i owned it for sure.
Trogly dude you gotta get that midnight purple whatever Flying V xpl with the khaler. That’s the perfect trem for people who don’t feel comfortable with trems. It lets you be pretty heavy handed unlike the Floyd which you have to be sensitive with. It’ll look great in the museum as well as give you something to learn trem style stuffs, and maybe a thing too. Jd
Nice show mate. Enjoyed the storytelling
Oh man. The MATRIX is on point tonite. I legit just watched a video with Linda and this guitar.. dang man?!?!? Crazy
Trogs Dragon logo popped up with those question marks..... 11:26
Vince Gill is a massive collector and definitely can afford that
Some guitars certainly have a story behind them !
On-board effects loop?
So much football these last couple days. Been watching most games with a guitar in hand. Time for another game 😂
Crazy! I sold a 52 converted to 56 specs last Jan for about 14k. No breaks - original finish. I guess I should have waited ;)
This guitar was kinda a dog to me. I could live with the nasty finish but the back was destroyed. No thanks.
You did good but this buyer probably mentally ill or something..
Awesome .... glad she sold it ... I seen the video u was talking bout ... very nice lady with plenty of spunk .... watched that video to start with cause that was my mom's name Linda Lee.... congrats ma'am
I have to say, Linda was sure some innovative gal. Very impressive!
Robin Zander lives in Safety Harbor where the seller lives. Could be him or maybe bandmate Rick Neilson.
I watched the video where this guitar is being played through a very cheap, small, Peavey practice amp. I can tell you for a fact that those pups have been modified. They sound like PAFs, they have that power, the snap. They certainly do not sound like any P90 I've ever heard. I'll put the link in the comments.
Bonamassa!!! He loves the history like we all do. Thx for a great story!!!!🎸🤘
Wow that’s great. I hope a regular person owns it and loves it instead of putting it in some millionaires collection.
I can't wait for JB to take it for a ride. I'd love to see the amp she used.
gretsch back pads cover the back plate for the mute assembly.
Guitars and kind of like dogs. You gotta train them. It takes a long time to teach one. That is why the prices on old ones are so high. Someone already taught them all the songs. :-)
