Electromagnets are usually wound around an object, making them round by default. Even when they're wound around objects with sharp corners, they still result in slightly rounded edges due to the wire winding around it. So what you're better off asking is if an electromagnet can be made in a cone design. The answer is yes, but it's a huge pain in the butt to get a tight wind, as the wire always wants to slide down to the narrow end of the cone. If you mind having loose winding, then I would recommend gluing the winding as you wind it.
@@megadeathx Suppose you start your winding on the narrow end, with a drop of glue to hold the end in place. Then as you wind up toward the wider end, wouldn't the "sliding toward the tip" effect make the winding TIGHTER?
@@senseisecurityschool9337 No because the direction of pull isn't perpendicular to the surface. In practice, I have found that the wire pulls *over* the previous winding rather than *against* the previous winding; so while it is tighter in a density sense, it's not at all tight in an useful line.

Many applications? I think you spoke of three and two of them were erasing magnetic media. I'm overwhelmed with all the possibilities. Just like a salesman; you talked for 9 minutes and said "we make magnets"
would be interesting to see a large pyramid magnet with mini pyramids placed all around it, since a pyramid is slopped towards the top then all mini pyramids would be too, sort of focusing their flux in the direction of the tip of big pyramid like a pine cone
Actually we have not looked at these. Of course we have the pyramids that meet that description but no one has asked that question before:) My original intent for making pyramids was not to create the higher fields at the tops of the pyramids, but it was to create a more uniform field across the base. Normally the middle would be lower gauss levels depending on thickness and so I thought if I made the middle thicker it would make up for that variation.:)
So, I have to ask, because the arrows on those magnets seem to be pointing the wrong directions. I study magnets in my PhD and have even made Haibach arrays (linear ones though). The arrows cannot be facing each other at the North and South side of the array. The head of the arrow at the bottom should point towards the tail of the other arrow at the top. Basically, half of the Haibach "cylinder" has the arrows pointing the opposite direction. I'll look more into what this arrangement would do using some good ol' modeling, but I'm pretty sure this would create something like zero field in the center, if the arrows were marked correctly.
It is a lot more concentrated, but somewhat less than the bottom, because some of the magnetic field does come out of the sides of the pyramid and loop back around towards the bottom before it gets all theway up to the top.

It doesn't matter how fast it spins - It won't be perpetual. Neither will it fly, prove the Earth is flat, levitate a train or bring rain to the deserts.
Focusing to a point, but what shape projects a B-field the farthest? Would the reverse end of the pyramid throw a field farther? The goal being the farthest field for equal magnet weight? Second question: What shape throws the farthest and largest dB/dt when spinning? Spin a magnet (by motor), is there a "best shape" (for equal magnet mass)? Farthest as measured from the point of closest approach of the spinning magnet surface? If the base-end of a pyramid threw the longest-largest field, would a "pie" shape be the best rotating shape? Apex of the pie at the center of rotation (fat end to the outside)? The longest-largest field might not provide the highest dB/dt? Are there better shapes to increase dB/dt? For example, wouldn't a rotating a bar magnet have several inflection points per rotation? One for the reversal from North to South and several others near the ends where the field goes to zero on-axis? Inflection points, where the field increases, then decreases and thus providing dB/dt?
Tom - basically to project a magnetic field over distance we increase the effective thickness of the magnet relative to the cross sectional area of the pole. For example - a 6mm diameter x 2 mm thick N50 disc magnet would have a surface gauss level of about 3,000 gauss. At 1 distance of 12.6 mm it measures about 35 gauss. Now, we double it to 6mm x 4mm and we get 4,100 g on the surface and 63 g at 12.6mm. Double that to 6mm x 8mm and we get 4,700 g on the surface and about 95 g at 12.6 mm. So you can see it is a diminishing return. If I stack up 50 of these discs so that it is about 6mm dia x 100mm long we get - 5,070 g on the surface and 160 g at 12.6 mm. Once the thickness (or length of the direction of magnetization) is greater than the longest path across a pole the diminishing returns really takes over. To increase beyond that you have to increase diameter. Now, for something a bit more exotic you can check out the Boyd Bushman patent - 5,929,732. We have made a sample of this and modeled it and it does project the magnetic field a little farther than a standard magnet does. Hope this helps:)
Hey super magnet man. First, i wanna say, great videos ive seen a few theyre good. I have a question for ya. Can u tell me anything about what is taking place when u try to squeeze to like poles against each other? I say squeeze because to me thats what it feels like. Does that put pressure on each field? Could some one maybe draw power from that or apply that somehow to technology?
Dale, magnetism does not focus like light does. A conical dish or a lens would have no effect on magnetism. Also, there really isn't anything that can focus magnetism. The pyramid magnet does intensify the field but certainly not as much as you would think. For example, if we take a 2 inch square x 1 inch think N50 block, we should get around 5,000 Gauss on surface, which is 4 square inches. You would think that making the pyramid and focusing all the flux from 4 square inches to 1 square inch would get you pretty much a 4X increase in flux but it will only get you up to about 7,500 Gauss.

very nice friend have you made a cube out of pyramid magnets. ?? bet it had some nice readings if so would make a great video.
Hello George, learned about U from Ken Wheeler , Question.... what is the safest way for me to take the magnet out of my very old micro wave?
how are watches working aroud so many magnets?
Hi
What about magnetic bearings that can float a motor or generator axle with no friction?? Can thes pyramid magnets work well for that?
Thanks !!
I already use magnetic bearings for yard ornaments.

Is there advantage with pyramid shape with mavebtic bearings?
Could they work for say 1000w generator bearings or 3hp motor bearings?
Is it me or is this just a lot of jaw flapping? I thought we will see some footage of the field at least... :(
I do have some low res footage of the sharks and magnetic fields - I will have to look for it and make a new video about that.

So when you drilled the hole in that magnet you showed at the end, did Eddy Currents make that process more difficult, or how did you go about doing that?
He must have drilled it before magnetizing...
what about a cone magnet? do the number of sides matter?
shouldn't need to glue them ???
Sliding could make it change fields slightly maybe, which is bad for paper experiments
thanks for the article S/M man,.. I was wondering if you have tried to make strong, standing magnetic fields 'within' a vase shaped container and also wondering how you monitor or map the 'actual' standing magnetic field (in fine detail) of your particular magnets. I look forward to your reply, and thanks again for these informative and interesting articles. ps I just noticed article date is 2012,.. hope you are still around and available for feedback.

I've just bought my first one inch neo magnet sphere. It seems to punch waaaaaaaay above its weight!! I wonder if that is also focussing the feild to a point? I can barely remove it from my metal bedpost and it's only one inch...
Is there a geometry that focuses the field for an electromagnetic, to put all of the magnetism at the end of a rod?

What would be interesting is if there was a way to control the amount of force generated, kinda like a dial control for intensity. Then would it be possible to tap the fields of the earth to ascend and descend from the distance to ground. Think of the different invisible intensity lines. Could you imagine tapping that field. That my friend would be amazing. I can visualize the feeling and a possibility but I don't know that much about the earths field and what frequencies those,,,,, lay lines I guess are??? To tune instruments to those fields and lift a object by control would take a different type of system altogether. I wonder if teletronics would have to be the control mechanism..
Just wondering do you know where I could learn more about teletronics and what materials have the best results/ reactions to this form of research????
Thanks for the video and your time in reading this comment..
God speed and happy experimenting!!!!;-)
It would be interesting to levitate some diamagnetic material (like pyrolytic carbon) over these very strong magnets.
is it possible to focus an electro-magnetic field to a desired point in a given space? if so what materials would be needed and how would it be done if possible?

"IF you use a pyramid magnet , is that not like how an explosive shaped charge directs it energy?" And if so, why can you not use it for anti gravity propulsion?
Kim Randall do you even know what gravity is?
If I need a 0.5mm X 0.5mm tip to have the strongest possible magnetization, should I use a cone or a pyramid? If we have the same material volume, which will have a stronger field at the tip? and how can we know the perfect cone/pyramid angle?
Thanks!
Jonathan, the Pyramid is the best. The rounded tip of a cone would not be as good as the square top pyramid.
Thank you! I'll buy a couple on your website for a try... Nice videos by the way!
Have you made a magnetic pyramid grid?
Very cool. They are very powerful, but they still need to be glued together (1:34)? That lowers the field strength, although probably not by much.

You love to make money and sell magnets. I wish to know about this realm.

What is the optimum taper angle and shape? I would think a cone would be just as good or better than a pyramid, although perhaps not as interesting

what will happen if use double pyramid magnet. Explain with direction of magnetic field lines plz...
Got any sets where two pyramids attract each other at their bases, with a south at one tip, and a north at the other?
Actually we have not looked at these. Of course we have the pyramids that meet that description but no one has asked that question before:) My original intent for making pyramids was not to create the higher fields at the tops of the pyramids, but it was to create a more uniform field across the base. Normally the middle would be lower gauss levels depending on thickness and so I thought if I made the middle thicker it would make up for that variation.:)
I purchased a neodymium ring. Love it
So, I have to ask, because the arrows on those magnets seem to be pointing the wrong directions.
Brock Peterson did ya figure it out?

have you attempted to make a vortexual magnetic field by angle and alignment?
bhai tu chutiya h
Is his watch still working?
Is the force on the "tip side" of the magnet greater than the force of the base? Or just concentrated more?
It is a lot more concentrated, but somewhat less than the bottom, because some of the magnetic field does come out of the sides of the pyramid and loop back around towards the bottom before it gets all theway up to the top.
What about five-sided pyramids?
What would happen to a fluid such as gasoline if it passed through that magnetic field?
Mostly nothing at all. Except a very very slight repulsion.

Hello Sir, I am doing a research on making a magnetic assembly which can rotate at 3000 rpm. Looking forward for your guidance. Please guide me.
It doesn't matter how fast it spins - It won't be perpetual. Neither will it fly, prove the Earth is flat, levitate a train or bring rain to the deserts.
but can i fly when i strap one on my head?
I have no interest in magnets, yet I find myself glued to the screen.....
Am I too high>?
How can I get this
Focusing to a point, but what shape projects a B-field the farthest?
Pyramid power strikes again!
Confused 8 different magnets or same?
Hey super magnet man. First, i wanna say, great videos ive seen a few theyre good. I have a question for ya. Can u tell me anything about what is taking place when u try to squeeze to like poles against each other? I say squeeze because to me thats what it feels like. Does that put pressure on each field? Could some one maybe draw power from that or apply that somehow to technology?
Interesting.
wouldn't it also be possible to achieve the same flux focusing by creating a conicial dish or lens?
Dale, magnetism does not focus like light does. A conical dish or a lens would have no effect on magnetism. Also, there really isn't anything that can focus magnetism. The pyramid magnet does intensify the field but certainly not as much as you would think. For example, if we take a 2 inch square x 1 inch think N50 block, we should get around 5,000 Gauss on surface, which is 4 square inches. You would think that making the pyramid and focusing all the flux from 4 square inches to 1 square inch would get you pretty much a 4X increase in flux but it will only get you up to about 7,500 Gauss.
So the Gauss increase is more due to total volume, as opposed to the surface area of the N and S ends?
AL: "What exactly is in the round space gap of the halbach/pyramids magnet to make it so strong?"
ED: "Magnetic lines of force, Al."
AL: "So the magnets are polarizing the zero point field, and that is the medium that allows the magnetic lines of flux to be detected outside the physical boundary of the magnets?"
ED: "There aint no zero point field Al -- it's just magnetic lines of force, those magnets aren't polarizing anything, now don't be making this mysterious"
AL: "If there's no zero point field with virtual particles being polarized by the magnets, how are the 'magnetic lines of force' hanging out in the open air around the magnets?"
ED: "Them magnetic lines of force is just THERE, right next to the magnet"
AL: "No medium then? No zero point field?"
ED: "Just THERE, Al. I told you don't complicate this."
