very valuable talk.. sometimes I forget how much I do know...I have been around the guitar for many years and I an just now appreciating the scale / chord relationships. it is the beginning of being
able to improvise. This relationship is really not complicated at the
" concept" level but execution is something
    else...thank you for your
talk...it was very inspiring on many levels...

Was watching Active Melody on guitar and this popped up. That was an encouraging talk, thought I would hear some playing but what I got instead worked just as well. I have a couple of mandolins, and would like to learn a bit of that, so this looks like a good site to start. That was a really good speech on music, thank you. 65 by the way.

That's why Norman Blake can rarely , if ever, play any one tune the same way twice. I listened to three different people play Loch Leven Castle. Each one was slightly different and a nice way of presenting the same tune. There is no sheet music on this tune that I know of, so the way to learn it has to be by ear.

Great comparison to how children learn languages. To add to this, I want to point out that children learn nouns and verbs first ("My dog" or "bird sing") then they add modifiers ("My brown dog" or "The blue bird sings"). In improvisation, we focus on chord notes and arpeggios, before venturing into other scale notes. It takes a while.
