www.bbc.co.uk/markkermode I talk to Stephen Fry at the recent Hay Festival about books, movies, critics and his novel The Hippopotamus - now a feature film.
Although I love listening to your rants. The reason I really follow you for is because I get recommendations for movies I might not even have heard about. Critics are often judged as the people who lecture you on why you're favourite thing is terrible but there's a lot more movies that I have watched because of critics than I haven't.
And ironically, filmed only a few days before the famous film critic Barry Norman died. Barry actually interviewed Stephen about "Wilde" and praised that film and Stephen's performance.
Douglas adams doesn't work so well for film because half of the humour, wit and intelligence is done through descriptions ("the soaceship hung in the air in the same way that bricks don't"). Cinema serves it to you on a plate and misses the fun descriptions. Terry Pratchett's work is the same. And yes, my quote there is probably wrong, don't care.
"Nobody ever remembers the nice ones!" I daresay I disagree, some of the words used to describe Tinker Tailor.. still run through my brain, as a concise and eloquent description of a masterclass of art. I must also confess to copping some of the lines to use to describe it as one's own! Furthermore, I must say, whilst yes, I do concede that "nice words" are generally less remembered, they are no less valuable! Your swan song for red turtle, whilst not as memorable as Mamma Mia say, did get me into the cinema to see it, and I feel like I owe you and many other critics a great debt for all the great media I have consumed as a result. Whilst the "baddies" reviews elevate a terrible movie to some laughs at least, a review of a "great" will cause us to be in awe, weeping, and pondering for some time- even if it's not at the criticism, but at the movie itself.
Here's what I'd like to know. _Why_ in this age of information did I not hear about the existence of this film until two years after its release? If not for the fact that I downloaded a couple of series of The Unbelievable Truth -- with David Mitchell making a joke about the book and movie being 'little known' as he introduced John Finemore -- I still would not know of its existence.
Mark. Have you seen 'The Vessel' ? It's just appeared on Netflix. Martin Sheen in a beautiful film. Would love to know what you think of it mainly because i believe you will love it. Astonishing piece
'The Movie Doctors' is a good read especially, but not exclusively, if you enjoy Wittertainment. 'It's Only a Movie: Reel Life Adventures of a Film Obsessive' is fun too.
What a pair! I could watch these two in conversation for hours.
johnality02 me too
Kermode and Fry? What luck!
This is so lovely. I could watch Stephen Fry talk for 10 hours.
You must watch his speech to the oxford union on oscar wild
This just made me want a hitch biopic
This was so lovely, thank you!
A wonderful interview. It explains so much
Mark, I may love your Sex In The City 2 review, but I went to *see* The Red Turtle purely because of your praise, and loved it.
It would be really nice if they are on the radio together.
Tim Mcainery who Fry acted with in Blackadder
Timothy Wilkes well darling
Fry and Kermode, keeping it the right side of luvvie.
Looks like something across Christopher Hitchens and Fry himself.

It looks like his character is based on his friend Christopher Hitchens
I know what you mean but Hitch would have been quite young and probably quite different when the book was written.
Nah Hitchens is cooler, way more interesting than that idiot in the film.
The 'Lassie' example reminded me of 'Rescued by Rover'!

That's West Wycombe Park in the trailer.

Writing a dissertation, are we? Very academic, my good sir.
A most approbatory comment. Well done sir.

Good film the Poet reminded me of Christopher Hitchins also.
Explains why the screenplay for Peter Jackson's "Dambusters" Stephen Fry was meant to be writing never came of anything.
Peter Manion
LUv U STEHPEN FRY XXXX
Great stuff not gonna lie.
Go get him (Fry) Kermode
Many thanks. Two thoughts: How does a poet live in such a house? and KIngsley Amis obviously didn't anticipate Gen Z.
Mark making Stephen squirm RE his anti-critic views XD
Could anyone recommend a Mark Kermode book to read?
Other than books about individual movies, there are only three to choose from, so go to Amazon and pick one out.
'The Movie Doctors' is a good read especially, but not exclusively, if you enjoy Wittertainment.
'It's Only a Movie: Reel Life Adventures of a Film Obsessive' is fun too.
Rất tiếc cho bà ,chồng bà mất bà buồn lắm nhỉ
