My great grandfather was one of the master bricklayers who constructed Melbourne's shot towers. It was nice to see how the city one is being preserved.
Very entertaining indeed. Thank you. Obviously you put a lot of thought and work into this. I was just walking down Little Bourke Street at that exact spot where the chubby guy is standing on the left at 1:28! (on my way back from the bottleO around the corner in Exhibition for a quick Sunday afternoon pick me up!)
Thank you so much for the upload. I hope they never modernise Flinders Street, I would be pretty pissed off it's the most nostalgic station in the city
My great great grandfather and grandmother were the first to come to Melbourne from Tasmania when there was nothing there. My grandfather was the first brick maker on the banks of the yarra and worked for John Pascoe Fawkner They came over from Tassie on the Enterprise
The last photo with AAMI Park in it used to have a greyhound track in that exact spot prior to the construction of the Citylink tunnels at the end of the previous millennium. I was also hoping to see what Bourke Street looked like before it became a mall between Swanston and Elizabeth Streets.
I love this; but I'm a pedant. This should be called Now and then; or the photo order reversed. I know .... I need to be shot for this comment; because it's a great deal of work which I really appreciate your doing. Thank you .. wait .. 2010? Wow. .... soz for the pedancy and thanks so much for the upload
I saw the planned "redesign" for flinders street station from a 1961 VR newsletter, basically a bloody awful massive brutalist "box" concourse with flat plane glass and pebbled concrete, the side fascia of the building to be replaced by similar flat slabbing. The design ended up being used on the spencer st upgrade in the 60s, also a thing of the past. So thankful this edwardian masterpiece has survived.
I was hoping to see a photo of the corner of Swanston and Flinders before the large Cathedral was built, pre 1880, there was a blue stone church and some offices, stores and a corn market.
Love the music. Reminds me of the soundtrack of "Back to the future". Love the "morphing" between the then and now. For a book version similiar to this see Melbourne: then and now by Heather Chapman and Judith Stillman
Hey, I know this is an old video, but im doing some animation and was wondering if anyone could link me the pictures used so I can use them as reference. Thanks.
a greek tragedy. all masked up. 8pm curfew. be a horror show. wait for the commonwealth to be restored. then it will be worth it. be much more pleasant.
The transitions and back to the future music really made this that much more enjoyable to watch. Well done!

"Master bricklayer" lolol....Any fool can lay bricks.
@@mjh5437 A master bricklayer isn't a person who is a master at laying bricks...
I absolutely love this video. Definitely one of my all time favourites. Well done.
Love the music, great work putting this up.....🇦🇨👍⚘🎩
Watching in early 2019. Melbourne has changed so much since this vid was posted its amazing.
they have ruined it. very sad state of affairs. lest we forgot the past.
@@jesusislukeskywalker4294 Bullshit they ruined it. Melbourne is fantastic.
@@edmac3651 youre an idiot
Yep true.
@@edmac3651 i agree. It gets better and better
This is amazing work. Loved it. The bttf theme is exactly the idea I was looking at doing. Magic
I wanna time travel back to that time for 1 -2 weeks.
I'm coming with you. I think that I was born at the wrong time and I'm almost 67. I should have been born then instead of 1958. Today is horrible.
Very good video l liked Melbourne then rather than now seemed piece full
GREAT WORK MATE, love how you used the back to the future music great work
One second in, instantly noticed the back to the future theme xD
Hahaha same! I noticed it so quickly but it's hilarious! 😂
I thought the Back to the future theme was "Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News? :P
This helped me soooo much with school
I’m very much looking forward to seeing your video!

Love the way you've done the transitions.
Thanks for posting. Well done

Good Job! Nice upload!!
Old is gold
Yep today it's just full of rectangles. We've absolutely destroyed the once beautiful masterpieces made by our ancestors.
Nice touch with the music...Marty.
Fantastic Pictures.
Good work!
Back to the Future soundtrack music 🎶
Awesome pics.
When was then my guess early 1900's ?
Excellent work cheers

This type of video shows how much incremental change occurs over a relatively short time.

Nice vid, music is on cue, but it should be called Now & Then as the contemporary pix appear first. :)
Great stuff Alan you should be in Hollywood
Could do another one now as so much has changed in 14 years

Have been away 10 years but my heart belongs to melbourne.
barbara walker I've been away for 9 years and feel the same. Looking forward to coming home next April. For at least a visit anyway. Cheers.
Reminds me of back to the future
you need to do a new one with all the new construction. I prefer the 20s.
I was hoping to see a photo of the corner of Swanston and Flinders before the large Cathedral was built, pre 1880, there was a blue stone church and some offices, stores and a corn market.
Quite funny that Melbourne was part of NSW until 1927. Explains a lot.
Umm Nope. Victoria was created in 1851. Melbourne is older but was the capital of Victoria in 1851.

Those sailing ships are amazing. To think it took months to sail from the UK to Oz.
Station Pier, my fishing haunt as a kid.
What is the music, please?
lol back to the future makes me want to build a a time machine
Hey, I know this is an old video, but im doing some animation and was wondering if anyone could link me the pictures used so I can use them as reference. Thanks.
Some things were more beautiful then than now such as station pier and Swanston street?
You got it wrong. The early photos should be 'then' and today's photos should be 'now'. Not the other way around, 'now' and 'then'. LOL.
very outdated now but good video
😍😍😍😍
x2 mate.
best comment ever seen on youtube
Anyone know what music this is ?
Should be titled "Now & Then".
Yep, most definitely Back to the Future.
The now is starting to look dated too.. Maybe its time to make a new one so the now can be the then can become the before the then
agree :-)

SOUNDS LIKE BACK TO FUTRE THEME
wow
How is this artificial or homosexual? It's awesome cos it has Melbourne and back to the future music
Melbourne now has posters saying, "Ask a Local" with the face of an asian. yes, melbourne is now mekong.
It's sickening hwd71. Our ancestors would be ashamed of us for just letting this happen.
I'm from the land down under
I'm pretty sure it is from Back to the Future..
Who else finds the music creepy

Maybe you should retitle your video - "You are all insignificant"? Thumbs up anyway - I already knew that.
