    What a great Master and teacher ! He never fails to make me laugh. He’s like a beacon of hope in my life. When times get rough and I’m at my wits end, depressed and feeling suicidal, I would go online and pull up one of his talks (even the ones I’ve seen a hundred times) ... within minutes, I’m back to feeling “normal” and sane again. Saddhu 3X !

    Hallo Ajahn Brahm just subscribed to the RUclips channel finally found a channel that i can 100% connect with. In my childhood from a very young age my very first word spoken was Ulf pronounced differently than it's spelt i was always back offish with this life time family i found many things very odd i found it very strange that none of them or their friends associates didn't have open fire places i was always a very outdoorsy boy spent pretty much all my time in the great outdoors i was never into TV had many natural abilities of doing things the old fashioned ways i was always telling demanding that this life time family return me to my own land my village my family and friends i described animals that aren't in this life time birth country i described the village the weaponry the way of life etc i spoke in my sleep in a language none of them their friends associates don't know ( I still talk in my sleep in that language - I've been informed by people who have witnessed it they always have a very confused look on their face all they tell me is that i was speaking in my sleep in a language they don't know and that i was speaking in a language they don't know and that i sounded like a young boy and not always a happy one they ask what was going on in my sleep i always reply that it doesn't matter - it would only freak them out with more after all - i don't sound anything like a young boy when I'm awake I'm a fully grown man ) I've always had my religious beliefs in the greater kingdom of the God's reincarnation and a lot more than one earth planets etc a lot more than one solasistam This life time family their friends associates etc don't have any religious beliefs but I've always had and always will have my religious beliefs never been told or tort of anything of my experience. It's extremely comforting to find this channel that like I've already said understands ✝️

    May be anyone who is interested in these talks are trying to find the meaning of life! It is up to the individual person to do their own exploration and see what works for them. There is no need to put down Ajahn Brahm he has a scientific background and certainly has a very developed mind after all these years of meditation, it seems like he is so full of wisdom! Nobody can understand the Buddhist philosophy if they don't have an open mind to see that the rebirth is part of Buddhism based on cause and effect. What goes around comes around even in this lifetime, regardless of what you believe or not!

    Buddhism is not about believing or disbelieving anything, but about developing one's own abilities to know the truth for oneself. There are plenty of ways to know the truth of rebirth but these are all subjective, so will never fit the criteria of most people's object based perceptions of the world. A point made clear in AB's anecdote of the experiment with the faculty physicists. If you truly want to know then develop your faculty of awareness along with the faculty of letting go of your preconceptions and fixed viewpoints.

    That's interesting. A year or so before I was born, my brother was stillborn. Recently, I accepted that a NDE I had giving birth in 1986 was true and not an hallucination. Since then, I've been receiving psychic readings. The best one I've had so far, my stillborn brother came through, ( reader could name him), identifying my actual fears and problems and giving me helpful advice. So I wonder if it's possible to share the soul of your stillborn sibling?

    This talk by Ajahn Brahm is mostly a string of anecdotes, their veracity mostly impossible to verify. However, the insights and truths behind stories can be investigated and tested. As far as whether a person's personality is driven by past lives, I prefer two approaches. The first is to do a careful examination of one's own life starting from infancy, if one can remember them. Childhood likes & dislikes, talents (or the lack of) in some areas, strongly influence one's life trajectory because they are how we make choices. The Buddha explained that "intention" behind choices and action is how karma works. Close senior relatives are good source of childhood stories. Since our own life story is only a singular case, there is a second approach: read up on as many biographies as possible. It is quite evident that in the life stories of other people, their childhood personality and preferences are established very early and have strong influence on their lives. Between siblings, the differences in personality can be very different. Where do the difference come from given a similar set of DNA from the parents, living under the same roof? The evidence of innateness (past life influence) exist but as one of Ajahn Brahm's story illustrated (the electromagnet vase lifting), people often choose to disregard the evidence since they hold a bias. People see what they wish to see.

    I agree with Dany Richard. I have read every book by Ajahn Brahm, listened to almost all of his talks which are available ; I feel extremely grateful for all his teachings and have a lot of sympathy for his person. But I really cannot follow him on this topic. There are different modes of experience: science is one of them and scientific evidence has its codes. If Buddhists want to prove reincarnation scientifically ( which I think is not a good idea - must be much more difficult to detect than, say gravitational waves !) they have to follow the scientific method like anyone else. Another point which bothers me is this reward system in a future life. Buddhism in general (and Ajahn Brahm in particular) is of great help to me for being a better, happier person in this life of mine. For instance I look after my very very old mother the best I can but if someone says that I will be rewarded for this in a future life this does not please me even if I am afraid of death. This may sound pretentious but I believe that when we are good or moral its not for a reason, we just are.

    • @kleyyer
      @kleyyer 6 лет назад +1

      I agree with you, for me, the reason to practice the path is to transform myself in this very life, if there's reincarnation or not, I really don't care, the only certainty is this life and that is what I should focus on.

      A lot of good unselfish people resist the idea that there are good or bad consequential karma from current or past actions because they feel it would feel pretentious if they continue to do good because it looks selfish. That is an unfortunate mentality for these people, which hints they don't have enough wisdom developed.
      When a person does good and does it even better and more often when knowing his or her good actually actions will lead to goodness. This is wisdom. Wisdom has its own karma to be inherited. When a person is aware of this natural law and intentionally does good will lead this person to eight noble fold path: right view is the wisdom, right intention and motivation follows it to right actions...
      if a person does random good things and feel guilty to do good when knowing its benefits, this person needs to learn why the mind b behaves that way and correct it.

    • @lesliepeace

Me saying that just now was red flagged lol 😂

  • @jjaent
    @jjaent 6 лет назад +4

    Feel free to let me know if you feel that my view point below is wrong view.
    I am a big believer in the concept that there is no such thing as a silly or improper question. If someone has a question they should go ahead and ask, even if it seems like the question is too basic. It gives the presenter an opportunity to express the concept in a different way and perhaps go a bit deeper into some aspect of the topic. Everyone benefits as most of the time other people had the same question anyway, but they where too shy to ask! :)
    However, the first question at 1:26:45 wasn't a question or even general feedback. Rather the audience member took the opportunity to promote a cause that was personally appealing or significant to them. It sounded like a worthwhile cause, and I believe the statement was likely made in good faith. However there was no real link between Ajahn Brahm's talk, and the points raised by the audience member!
    I feel that it is selfish for people to use this valuable Q&A time to make random comments. The whole point of the Q&A is for people to ask questions if they are unsure of something from the talk, or to go deeper into some point that is related to the talk, or Buddhism / Dhamma in general.
    Thoughts?

      John Attard Well, everyone can use work on their listening skills. I think Ajahn Brahm handled it beautifully and it made his Buddhist principles shine. Maybe she'll see the comments and understand it is time ONLY for questions. She may not understand that people overseas could be missing sleep in order to wait in the live chat to ask questions and that her dominating his time like that is possibly impacting people at the temple as well as people she can't see. I find most people are oblivious to others, in general, and don't do "active listening". That has to be learnt. Like, many people can read, but not everyone learns how to speed read ☺

    Which is more likely. People will draw the conclusions and find the answers they set out to prove and believed beforehand?
    Or, there are supernatural forces at work to allocate our consciousness into other life forms based on our behaviour?
    I would need to see several peer reviewed studies of large sample groups before buying into such a fantastic claim. Not just a collection of stories.

      Too bad, we are limited by our physical senses and the flow of consciousness is still beyond comprehension using our limited senses and expression ability. I grew up with super natural experience, having deceased elders coming back every now and then, and a sister with a third eye. Took me years to find explanations as I refused to believe traditional explanations. After years of listening to Ajahn Brahm's and understanding science, finally I began to see how it works.

  • @PhoenixProdLLC
    @PhoenixProdLLC 6 лет назад +1

    There must be some kind of thumbs down algorithm on RUclips because I can't see why anyone would doo that who actually listened to this. Strange stuff does happen and I might be doubly skeptical as Ajahn Brahm. I actually think "tomboy" is wrong though. It's just not wanting to sit around painting your fingernails essentially. It's having similar interests as people who happen to be boys. It doesn't, btw, mean you are a lesbian by default. And there are tomgirls, boys who don't like "boy" activities. So I think it's very good that all the gender typing is pretty much abandoned except by the elderly maybe. There *is* a difference between sex (male/female/intersex) and gender (man/woman/masculine/feminine) and gender is a *social construct*. It's what Society, which is often influenced by brutal and oppressive religions, says Female and Male "should" like, how they "should" dress, how they "should" behave and who they "should" love romantically. What's sad is in the 20th centuries and before, many girls and boys were SO pressured to do things that over-ride their natural instincts and desires for their lives.
    I'm not sure many people know this, but NO military leaders advised Truman to drop those bombs on Japan. Quite the opposite, they explicitly advised him it was NOT necessary. It was something a few of the scientists explained to Truman, a couple who were positive about it happening. No, the choice was all Truman. He felt it would send a very strong message to Russia that we're not even mildly hesitant to roast people if they make a move against us. This set off the Cold War (which was absolutely a war btw and far more dangerous than most knew). MacArthur said we should've taken care of the Russians while in the European theater and given Russia's recent behavior towards the USA, shows he was probably right. Anyway, Truman had heard of course the horrors the Japanese had inflicted on American POWs. Japan attacked us and then tortured our people ruthlessly choosing NOT to play honorably in battle, not to mention the cost in American lives sorting them out, so Harry probably wasn't feeling particularly generous towards them. I think people should take these lessons too heart. The USA will tear you up one side and down the other if you hurt our people. Read some accounts of what our captured spooks were subjected to at the hands of Russians. No, on the global stage the USA has been a lot more benevolent than our enemies past or present admit. Nobody gives as much foreign aid nor sends as many citizens abroad to set up new, life saving and life changing technology as the USA does. Nobody. We're not the greedy beasts we're portrayed as. And the entire world sends their brightest students to our university's to train in, where they take their skills back home! Medicine and engineering come to mind. So, hopefully people will understand why Americans are proud about our country and why we get sick of hearing about how awful and stupid we are from people in different countries who show us a xenophobia few of us feel. /End History lesson 😁🙏 sadhu!

    I think a lot of Ajahn Brahm's stories are hyperbole. My dad used to tell me stories like that to prove a point, so I understand, but at the and time, it threatens a person's credibility to not know the facts behind some of their claims and to not provide sources. It also makes me wonder if he's outright lying... which is against Buddhist teachings I've personally read.

      Jeffrey Carter ....Yes. Because a lot of his claims are not in fact documented like he claims. No one should always be taken at their word despite their status. You should never have complete faith in everything a person says, because humans are still humans. Memories are not perfect. Humans are not perfect.

      He has admitted many times his stories are not true or borrowed in general with a twist. The approach is based upon the old oral tradition, not to be taken literally but to tell or convey a teaching in a memorable and colorful way. Brahm mixes in everything from Tolstoy to Milne to ancient Indian Buddhist lore. It’s all cool. 🙏🏽

      Mary Ann absolutely doubt is one of the principle foundations for Buddhist practice! When you meet the Buddha, kill him 😊
      But the idea is to absorb the meaning of the story, understanding what the teaching is about. Then apply it, sincerely and diligently. (This is what is meant by doubt) don’t assume, now that you understand the teaching that the process stops. Test it. Make it a part of your evidence from experience and kill the Buddha

You dont have to waste your time and energy composing what you might feel your being intellectual writing here trying to impose what ever your intention is. I love Ajahn Brahm -- he has changed my life -- but this talk demonstrates his gaps in rationale on certain topics. He adheres too strongly to the more superstitious dogmas of Buddhism; Ajahn Brahm himself says extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, yet propagates a ridiculous story about a 3 week old infant speaking fluently as evidence of reincarnation.

    • @dammideepa2866
      @dammideepa2866 5 лет назад

      You are deluded and know nothing about Buddhism!!!! There are no superstitious dogmas in the Theravada Buddhism which prevails in Srilanka, Camboge, Thailand etc,. Buddhism never speaks about superstitious dogmas!!!! It is possible for a 3-week old baby to talk and also, such babies have the wonderful ability to remember their past lives!!!! which they inherit through the good karma that they have committed in their past lives!!!
