Hunter’s Sandwich (Switzerland) (1917) on Sandwiches of History

  • Full confession, I am not a hunter. Still, I feel like I am on solid ground when I say that the Hunter’s Sandwich (Switzerland) from Salads and Sandwiches from 1917 is not something any hunter would reach for today. While I find Brie and honey delicious, it seems a bit precious of a combination for folks out hunting. Maybe that’s just me. Still, a tasty sandwich is a tasty sandwich so no complaints here.

My suggestion: substitute the honey with onion preserves, and absolutely yes to the almond slivers.

    Sandwiches of History Drinking Game:
    "It's not bad!“ : 1 drink
    buttered bread : 1 drink
"amounts not given in the recipe" : 1 drink
correctly guess a plus-up: everyone else finishes drink
    no plus-up: EVERYONE finishes drink

Yeah, my first thought for a plus up was some sort of cured meat too, but ik he doesn't usually add meats in sandwiches that don't already have them.

I love, L-U-V, black current jam on Brie, it makes me feel fancy. The plus up looks great. If I were out in the woods, hunting mythical creatures (with a camera, of course), I would eat it.

While I can't remember the details, Many decades ago some one explained to me the science behind why cheese tastes good with honey. Something about the way the sucrose and lactose react with each other. It has, however been known since well before science, thus the promise of the land of milk and hoey (also, a TON of black pepper is the absolute best thing on a cheese sandwich!)

Local place used to make a brie, honey, and thick sliced bacon sandwich on a skinny baguette that I still dream about. I recreate it with peanut butter instead of brie. Not the same but still amazing.

I’m not a hunter either-just don’t have the patience for it. But I’ve been hunting and packed many hunter sandwiches. When you go, say, deer hunting, you don’t necessarily pack a venison sandwich.
A few things going on when you pack to hunt, mainly, you’re going to pack light! The best choices will be carried in your jacket pocket and need to contain starch, fat, protein, and sugar. I think our Brie/honey sandwich hits the mark! Almonds was a great item to add.
A really popular hunting sandwich is a peanut butter and jelly on whole wheat. Yes, that combination really does stick to your ribs, and I’m betting the Brie/honey sandwich would as well.

I've lived in Switzerland, and I don't know what about that sandwich makes it "Swiss," and it definitely doesn't seem substantial enough to pack for a hunter's lunch! 🇨🇭
It seems by now you've accumulated enough "really tasty but too dainty for a lunch sandwich" recipes to throw an epic tea party!🫖🥪

It's pretty popular here in the Netherlands with walnuts, rather than almonds. Usually some greens as well.

I would have put something saltier than the brie as a plus up. Maybe some olives? I’m a sweet salty girl.
I can tell we have different adventurous tastes but I would absolutely try all of these at least once including your plus ups!

This reminds me of a sandwich that my family enjoys. This was something I threw together years ago when I didn’t want a plain grilled cheese.
Tuscan bread, smoked Gouda, thinly sliced apples, fresh ground pepper and honey on the bread before placing all the items on it in the above order, then grill it.

In italy we would use some brasseloa and nuts on the top of the brie. Aside, it would be made in a ciabatta

    • @malilevi1
      @malilevi1 6 месяцев назад +2

Also, you could substitute brie with ricotta/buffalina/mozzarella (preferably mozzarella di buffala) depends on what is available, each hits a bit different
But the basics are braseola for the protein, walnuts for the crunch and some honey for the flavor. Do not forget a bit of olive oli sprinkled on the top of the bun before adding other ingredients
