  • Evangelion is half avant garde masterpiece, half miserable dumpsterfire, but 100% HORNY!!
Shinji's character embodies all of these qualities pretty well, so please listen to me analyze and half heartedly defend his character, while also shitting on him and kind of the show as a whole.

Seeing Shinji suffer is like seeing myself suffer, because at one point in time I was just like him; a “wimp” and a “loser”, clinically depressed from being relentlessly bullied.
It absolutely pains me to see him hated by so many people, and pains me even more to see him suffer such a terrible fate.
Ever since my childhood friend committed suicide just before Quarantine, Shinji was the only coping mechanism I had during the isolation of the pandemic.
Unfortunately, the Evangelion fandom on social media cyberbullied me for over three years for relating to Shinji so much, even accused me of faking my trauma and depression, and blaming me for the suicide of my friend.
I have this delusion that I can sacrifice myself for Shinji’s happiness. More than anything, I just want Shinji to be happy; even if it kills me.

Damn... I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that, and I'm sorry about your friend as well. People can be really harsh, especially over the internet. I'm glad Shinji and EVA helped you over the Pandemic, and I hope you're doing better now. If you haven't found it already, I hope you can find something in life in that helps you cherish every second you're still here. And you shouldn't want to sacrifice yourself for anyone or anything. You deserve happiness for the sake of yourself.

I love Shinji like a little brother. I swore to defend him even to my dying breath.
But ultimately, Evangelion didn’t help me. It nearly drove me to suicide. I had nightmares about the Third Impact.
Worst of all, they turned my “Message in a Bottle”, my cry for help, into a copypasta

Ive always hated the notion that Shinji is a whiny bitch because for most of the series, he isnt. Hes hesistant on piloting for the first 5 episdoes where he legit afraid of dying. Then he gets confortable with piloting and his social interactions. He doesnt take much initiative on things, but he also feels indifferent in a lot of things, Asuka hates that about him. Then he gets cocky and gets trapped inside an angel, so he humbles down. He then thinks he kills his friend, and rightfully is angry to his father about forcing him. And he adamantly tells his father "fuck you I never want to see you again". He then pilots the Eva hours later because he rather go against his word then to see the world desteoyed. Then the last 3rd of the series, Shinji's closest connections dwindles and he is lonely. During the movie, he is at his lowest, but he snaps out of it during instrumentality, and chooses the pain of misunderstanding if it means being able to interact with people again.
I think people just fall into confirmation bias and just see Shinji how they want to see him, even when characters acknowledge how much more defiant shinji becomes. I feel like people are bad ciewers akin how they are bad listeners, you look and not observe. You heard but not listened.

    • @chillreview636

I agree that people are too harsh on Shinji considering he's an introverted and very troubled teenage boy who is asked to bear the weight of the entire world on his shoulders despite never wanting to be anyone's savior in the 1st place. But I can understand the perspective of a viewer who doesn't want to watch a show about a little boy being traumatized for 20 something episodes and 5 movies. That's why I I do classify Shinji as a whiny bitch, but I also give him a pass, because damn does he have very valid reasons for his whiny bitchness

I came across Neon Genesis last year and I watched all of it in a matter of two weeks (including the rebuild films) and it has quickly become one of my favorite pieces of work.
When I was going through and even after I finished the 3rd act of the series and The End of Evangelion, I often found myself staying up at night feeling the dread that the characters were going through at times, I had to take a break from almost everything as it was all I could think about.
NGE's ability to convey emotion is in a catagory made because of its own existence. The way you're able to absolutely hate and even sometimes wish pain upon a character for their decisions, and then get genuinely upset and empathize with them when something bad happens to them is something I haven't found in too many shows or stories. Because of this ability to affect your emotions, regardless of how iffy the story is at times, NGE will always be on my list of recommendations. I'm glad you've at least enjoyed it somewhat.
(Except the hospital scene, that is not recommended and can be skipped)

      @chillreview636  2 года назад +1

From what I've gathered, a lot of people seem to love NGE for similar reasons to yours.
I can't say I love it, because I think it went a little too far with how disturbingly depressing it gets in the final act, but I understand why certain people have such a strong connection to this series

When you’re talking about Shinji being pathetic but relatable, you are so right. If you take a step back, and look at Shinji’s life without anything else, it makes sense. He’s had no friends, his mother’s dead and he can’t remember her and his father abandoned him. Yeah no wonder he runs away from people, the people meant to protect him either didn’t exist, died, or actively abandoned him. He is traumatised and at a young age, which is exactly when you don’t want to be traumatised because it just destroys the your fundamental views on society. When you put that into the context of the show, then the way of presenting this is masterful if you get it. My parents failed to get any help for my undiagnosed Autism until I was 17. That’s when they found out that because they failed to help me I’d been so traumatised that I had CPTSD. Shinji presents childhood trauma so well, and I think it truly is a case of if you get it you get it. You have had some issues in your childhood, so you kind of get it. There is a good reason why people say “you don’t get it” when it comes to this show.

    • @mrbanks456
      @mrbanks456 3 месяца назад +1

Exactly. You just intuitively understand this show if you're the type of person who has had a lot of difficulty connecting with people.
Anno has been speculated to be autistic. He's said that he wasn't very interested in people in his youth. He rarely draws characters and mostly does special effects work. But when he made Evangelion, I think that's when he actually tried to understand people and himself and wanted to state his findings to the world.

Frankly I have never hated Shinji. Nor will I ever hate him. And heck I don't even look down on him. I am displeased by his actions, but I still have hope for him in the future. It's funny, Evangelion has affected my life so much that my story that I'm writing has a similar character to Shinji as a response to the people who hate him. In order to do that I structure the character while being like Shinji, also structuring him like Jinx from Arcane.
Like in my story, I have never hated Shinji. In fact I don't even have sympathy for him, but pure empathy and understanding. And maybe it's cause it's very hard for me to hate people. And I mean like very hard. I see Shinji as someone who needs a father. NOT a mother, shadow of Asuka from the rebuilds. He more or less needs a mentor who will put a lot of faith in him and show a lot of love towards him, while helping him to become a better person on the inside and out simultaneously.
And for the character in my story, there's also another character who is a mentor/father figure to him. He kind of represents my own father who whole heartedly supports me in my self improvement journey and things I still need to get over in life to be better.
And the main character of my story represents my view on Shinji and the fact that I could never hate him, and am incredibly empathetic, not sympathetic, of him and helps him to improve every step of the way. A best friend to the character to be frank.
Shinji represents both the worst and best of humankind. And he's also felt like someone who I could lead and be a true and dedicated, loving friend to. That said, recently I watched a video on how the End of Evangelion is a masterpiece. And the guy actually described Shinji as a sociopath, which I never thought about. And as I'm typing this, I still feel the same way I do about Shinji, but I feel like other would shame me about it. I feel no shame in my position tho. But maybe that's just cause I'm religious.

I love your videos, man. You've got the gift of calling it as you see it, uniquely explaining why the topic at hand is what it aims to be, and what it means to you in a cool, but purposeful way. You ain't the first, but you certainly got the voice, brotha. Nothing but success & good vibes to you, man.🙏
And hell, you've pretty much described my feelings on Evangelion as a whole too. I discovered the main series, EoE & the rebuild films around '18/'19, and was reluctant to start watching due to the amount of content I THOUGHT the franchise had, thinking it was as vast as that of Naruto or Dragon Ball (probably because of the amount of popularity & just meme-atry around the characters over the years). Only to find out it has the series, the sequel film & then the rebuilds.
I, for one, love Eva for being one of the first pieces of the anime medium to address darker themes at the time that it did, since we started to see a lot of different genres really start to spawn directly after. But, I also love the series for reasons you mentioned as well, of just being able to relate to all the characters to certain degree, not just Shinji. I love when characters are fleshed out to give a general world building feel, rather than JUST being supporting characters.
Thanks for reading this long ass Ted Talk comment (lol), but I hope more views come your way, man. It's chill as hell (pun intented), and inspiring.

The problem with the original series is that there was alot of politicking going on between the producers and Anno during its production so some stuff got cut out and some stuff got changed and this was not at all helped by Anno's clinical depression at the time.
Watch the Rebuild Series they're alot more coherent in their themes and plot.

Just watched the rebuilds a few months ago actually. I think they added some good changes and elements overall, but I also feel like they were missing some of the magic of the original.

Evangelion is the best thing what I've seen in my life. I love characters, story, world and symbolism of everything in it. Eva really helped me with self acceptance and showed that the desire to not exist is wrong. I finally understood that I cannot escape from problems. You said that you like to separate back story of an series/anime from the art what you're exploring. But here this knowlege is required. Anno (Eva's director) in time of making evangelion he was struggling with depresion. This show is literaly a tutorial to happines. Introspection of the director.

I get what you're saying and I definitely agree that many aspects of EVA are great, but I still don't think I NEED to know the full extent of the creators' depressive state as he made it. I can tell just from watching that he must have been pretty depressed to make something like EVA lol. I guess having confirmation of that fact doesn't make it any better or worse of a story for me.

Shinji is perhaps the boy who has been most neglected and crushed by unscrupulous adults in all of fiction.
Other tragic characters like Harry Potter, Naruto, Denji and others were "lucky" to find friends and a goal that gave them meaning in their lives, but Shinji never achieved any of it.
After his father abandoned him, Shinji was raised by an apathetic sensei who made the minimum effort to raise him, that is, teaching him to do housework and all the Japanese etiquette so that he would be submissive like a dog and would not bother him.
How could someone in these circumstances have acquired character, determination and independence if everyone ignored his feelings and treated him like he's a nuisance?
Hell, they didn't tell him shit about being an Eva pilot, those miserable bastards threw him into the robot in his shirt sleeves without even being remotely fit for his age.
He lived the life of a civilian until he was fourteen, they did not train him and stroke his ego like Asuka, on the contrary, they hammered him down.
The only thing that bothers me about him is the fact that he didn't decide to run away forever after the first fight, because hell, he still had time to avoid carrying a responsibility that he had not been prepared for and that he did not want to do.
More than once I would have liked him to have reacted violently against Misato or Asuka, the two great leeches in his life, whether by yelling at them, insulting them or throwing some blunt object in their faces.
Because God, his relationship with those two super toxic women was what made him a wimpy bitch. Are you seriously going to lower yourself to being the maid and doormat of an irresponsible hedonistic alcoholic and an antisocial and rude gaijin?
They have every right to treat you like shit and you just nod and apologize? Dude, where is your anger? Your self-respect? Go open your arms with a knife, to see if you have water instead of blood in your veins!

Evangelion is like eating your favorite food through a rusty pipe. It feels lile a crumbling building when I watch it where every sspect and character is being torn fown, and the movie ending was downright disturbing, that hospital scene was the most mood changing scene in the hole series, and its hard to understand the characters in the actual dhow becaue the execution is god awful.

That hospital scene was on something else man. If the show was just less horny, I'd like it so much more. Sometimes it works, like when it fuels parts of character development like when Asuka rips her shirt and says "look at me" larer in the show, it fuels her development, and it being an uncomfortable experience to watch feels very tasteful and necessary to make you understand Asuka and her flaws and why she acts the way she does

Absolutely dude. I think part of it was the struggle in production and how the creators decided it'd be an anime about depression and existential dread way later in the show's run.
