For those who need translations-- The story is told from the perspective of a child who, with his family, lives in the slums of the Philippines and is among the poorest of the population. It begins with the child and his brother, comfortably sitting in his "kariton" (the wooden wheelbarrow looking thing) while strolling around their neighborhood. Once they arrive home, their father does as well and he asks his wife to wake him up early tomorrow because he is going to vote in the nearby school. The wife asks, "Do you know who you will vote for?" The father said he decided to vote for the man they saw on the poster and heard from the radio because he heard that the man is willing to pay them if they vote for him. His wife protests. "So if there's a person who will give you money, you'll just accept it? Without hesitating?" The father replies, "Of course! We need the money!" She persists and says she heard from a friend that the same politician has plans to turn their neighborhood into a shopping mall. He disregards this, saying that "Your friend likes to gossip anyways." The conversation ends with the wife asking him if he's certain about this politician. Again, he waves it off and reminds her to wake him up early tomorrow. Election day came. The father had to bring his child because no one can look after him at home. Upon entering the school, the kid noticed countless campaign posters stuck haphazardly against the wall. They all had one word on it: "Iboto!" (Vote!). Inside, the father met with a stout man who wore a pink "barong" -- he is the politician he mentioned the day before. The politician greets him and asks him how he is. He responds, "I'm doing good! And you?" The politician says the same and asks who was the little child. Upon hearing the politician refer to him, the child holds his father's hand. "Ah! He's my child, sir.", the father replied. The politician chuckles and says "Oh well, just always be careful okay?" before passing a handful of money to the father. "Make sure this stays between us. I hope you won't forget us when you vote." He adds before turning to the child. "And you kid, take care of your father, okay?" The child simply looks up at him with a hint of wariness in his face. The father thanks the politician, "This will be a big help to my family. And don't you worry, no one will know about this." Afterwards, the family enjoyed a better meal after the father used the money to buy chicken, fish, fruits, and soda. The wife still felt uneasy and remarked that maybe he shouldn't have accepted the bribe. He defends his actions by saying that he wasn't the only one who received the bribe and that anyone who voted for the politician was paid as well. The wife doesn't protest any further, commenting that the food was going to get cold. Days went by and they happened as usual. The child and his little brother strolled around their neighborhood with their kariton. All was going well until he saw people running in the same direction as if they were all running away from something. Two black SUVs accompanied a white one and drove up in front of the kid. The father walks in, hands balled into fists, "What's this? Why are you here? What are you doing here?" The wife tries to pull him away. "That's enough, no more." but he persisted. "Leave me alone!" "Who sent you here?" He continues, impatience evident in his tone. "What's the meaning of this?" A bodyguard opens the door of the white SUV and the politician who bribed the father before emerges, and in his hand, a blueprint of the mall that is about to replace their neighborhood. The citizens fight back as policemen begin to form a barricade to block them off. Batons smacked against their arms while sledgehammers tore down their homes. The wife held onto her children while hiding behind a corner as the chaos ensued. The story ends with the child watching as the neighborhood he grew up in turn to rubble. (I'm sorry if I condensed it too much)
This is still relevant and the reality of Filipino families. *The rich gets even richer and the poor, poorer.* Those would believe in the phrase "It's more fun in the Philippines" are ignorant to the reality of it all and are lying to themselves. Of many traditions practiced and continued to be practice, I'm not proud that corruption or abuse of power are the ones that defined my country. Wake up, mga kababayan :"(
Same in India and i can finally feel the visible fast change(negative) from 2014 when our new Prime Minister was elected, he ruined our economy and us lower middle class people suffers for the high price that we have to pay for everything that we can't even get to save enough to have our own hpuse even after years and years

This video is a way to spread awareness to vote wisely for upcoming elections. Please make sure that you know everything about the candidate you're going to vote for. Don't let them bribe you with money, as these people will be governing our country for a long time. Don't let them persuade you into buying your vote.
The father was offered money in exchange for his vote for a certain candidate. The wife was hesitant and warned the husband but he didn't listen. He did end up voting the man and the man gave him money for it. He immediately bought food for his family but his wife was still doubtful and was concerned of how much he spent. The husband just brushed his wife off and said that if they continued to vote for the man, they can eat as much as they want. The newly elected man then came to clear out the slums to build a mall. The comfort they had was short-lived. He shouldnt have voted for the man who didnt care for them in the first place but with their situation, it is understandable. It's the reality. The poor are taken advantage of for their desperation to survive. They don't have a choice.
I love the little detail where the father doesn’t use the pedestrian crossing while crossing the street, it really shows how a lot of Filipinos don’t actually get the education they deserve and need to make important decisions, like choosing who to vote for. And the thing that gets me the most is how the film always focuses on the child’s face, because he sees everything that’s going on, but he can’t do anything.
Man these comments are insanely recent like 18 mins ago? And this video is 11 years old! Is RUclips just recommending this to everyone at the same time after 11 years?
Idk about yall but to those who dont know the context of the animated short, its about how those poor, guillible people are quite an easy target by the trapo (Trapo means Corrupt govt. officials in filipino) by telling them empty promises of giving em good life if they gonna vote for them even bribing em or lets say buying their votes (since the poor man really need the money to feed his family, he sold his vote to the guy). but at the end the trapo was elected and decided to destroy their home (to build a fancy mall) and the neighbors was against it. the promise of helping the poor was never made.. it ended so badly that probably someone died with all the chaos happening and at the end the family ended up have no place to stay now and the poor kids are there to witness the chaos..

Films are a depiction of a reality in more acceptable way. Being a artist doesn't mean creation explosive and cringe content rather a voice and eyes of a society culture and it's people. A heartly appreciation to the creators and it's team 😊

@@3HorsemenOfMovingPictures well everyone has their own story and most of it is kinda majoritys story in a specific country and area, that's what i meant since they share it with everyone and bring it to light for everyone else to see and be aware of this reality
I noticed that animation was simple (but it is a 2009 production and its alright). That been said, the concept of the film is great and is a topic which needs to brought in light and discuss about. Making the world familiar to such realities of society is what films are made for. Kudos to the creators!! (P.S. I am not familiar with the language but still was able to understand the story. That what makes film visually brilliant. Kudos once again.)
For the people who doesn't understand the animation, It is all about a poor family living in a poor side at the Philippines. One day, there was an election and everybody was prepared to vote for the president. However, the father that voted for that person was actually going to end their lives and tear their home apart because of building a mall. Everybody was very sad, because they don't have a home anymore. They are poor, that's why they live in a place like that. Don't judge about the language of the animation, you don't hear it, you feel it to understand. If still don't, please click off instead. I hope it helped!
Since the election is coming, i hope this video serves as an eye-opener for everyone. Money is easily spent nowadays, so vote wisely. Choose a candidate who is kind and has a good heart.

If anyone needs help with what they’re saying, these are my translations: 0:58 : Oh you’re already here. 1:01 : Come, let’s eat now. 1:08 (Mom): Right timing, you’ve arrived too. (Dad): Don’t forget to wake me up tomorrow, ha? I have to leave early. (Mom): Why? Where are you going? (Dad): Have you already forgot? Isn’t it election tomorrow? I’m going to vote, I need to go to the school. (Mom): Do you already know who you’re gonna vote? (Dad): Yes, the chubby man there in the poster. The one who we heard in the radio. It’s cause I heard, if we vote for him, he will give us money. (Mom): So that means, if somebody gave you money, you’ll just accept it without thinking twice? (Dad): Well of course! We need money! (Mom): I don’t believe in that person! I just talked with Lita yesterday. She said that man has plans to make a shopping mall out of one of our neighborhoods here. (Dad): *Sus! Why would you believe Lita? Eh that lady’s a gossiper after all! (Mom): Just be quiet, are you sure about that person? (Referring to the man he’s voting for) (Dad): Whatever, just wake me up early tomorrow! 2:03 (Mom): Eh who will watch over our son? (Dad): Fine! I’ll do it! 2:40: (Candidate/ Gov. official) Good Morning! (Dad): Good Morning *po, Sir! (Official): How have you been? (Dad): Uhh... Fine! You, sir? How are you? (Official): Fine too... this (referring to the election). And who is this companion of yours? (Dad): Ah, him *po? He’s my son, sir. (Official): Haha! Always take care, ah? (Dad): *Opo! (A respectful way of saying Yes/Of course!) (Official): And this is only between the two of us, ah? Hopefully you won’t forget about us when you vote. And what about you, little boy? Don’t neglect your father, ah? (Dad): Thank you so much, sir! This is a big help to my family. And...don’t worry, no one will know about this. 3:17 (Mom): The food...it’s so many! (Dad): That’s because of the person I voted for! Didn’t I tell you? If you vote him, he’ll give you money? That’s why from now on we will always eat good food. (Mom): You might have gone too far... you probably used up all the money. (Dad): Its okay! Don’t you worry, there’s still some left anyway. (Mom): I’m still concerned, eh. Maybe you shouldn’t have accepted the money. (Dad): Don’t you worry anymore! I’m not the only one who received anyway. As long as it’s anyone who voted for him, he gives them money. (Mom): Ah, that’s enough, that’s enough! Let’s just eat, our food’s becoming cold. (Dad): Better said, alright let’s eat. 5:16 (Dad): Oh! What’s this? Why are you here? What are you doing here?! (Mom): (Either “Stop it.” or “Cut it out.” two times) Don’t interfere with them. Stop it. (Dad): Don’t stop me! Leave me be! Who brought who here? What’s the meaning of this? For the song lyrics, I can’t find the official Tagalog/English lyrics. In which I think it was made only for the animation. I’m not sure if I can do an accurate/direct translation but here it is: 5:29 We don’t need to be far To find out that your my love To find out my worth Your legacy is beautiful To understand well The traditions/customs of my race To wake up from reality My curiosity intoxicated you My curiosity intoxicated you ※ In 2:01, the father stated the word “Basta”. There isn’t a direct translation of it, it highly depends on the context. “Basta” and “Sus” is used as an expression in the Philippines. The use of “po” in 2:40 is as a showing of respect towards a person.
The video shows how people are easily blinded by money and short-term change, especially you're experiencing poverty. Politicians would rather target the poor because they know their weaknesses. Since this happens, nothing will change. The same cycle happens over and over again, even now. Poor people will stay poor or even poorer.
Some may not understand this since it doesn’t have subs but to explain this video and how it is related to its title, Trapo if directly translated means rag/rug. It’s also short for Traditional Politician. In this case, both applies. When you call somebody in the Philippines as “trapo”, it means they don’t have any value. It is a very demeaning term and is one of the lowest insults you could say to somebody. The video can actually be seen in two perspectives. So basically, vote buying is very common here in the Philippines during electionS. Politicians would usually target communities living in the slums and would discreetly hand them money, coupled with false promises in exchange for their votes. These kind of politicians were branded as TraPo. In another angle, the video can also be referenced as how these poor people are treated during elections. They are just being used by these kind of politicians by offering them spare change, which for those poverty-stricken families are already considered as a big help, so they would vote for them. In short, in these politician’s eyes, these poor people are worthless or “TRAPO”. They don’t care what happens to them once they win and are willing to dispose them for money like in this case selling the land on where these penniless people lives (if you’re wondering, slum areas are usually gov’t owned properties) to a company so a mall could be built on it.
I'm from Thailand and I watched a documentary about prison in Philipines, dictator in Philipines and now corrupted political in Philipines. It's similar yet quite different from my country. In Thailand, our political condition is still not quite stable. Many coups happened, many lawsuits were changed, torn apart and then rewrite it again. Even now the people still debate each other on current government and people also think there are many corruptions caused by this government. We also have slums here too but it's quite rare to find. I think the difference here is if you're going to demolish someone's house in order to build a mall here it wouldn't end so well lol. Anyway, hope people will have better quality of life soon, love from Thailand.
This got recommended to me, but it doesn’t have any subs so I decided to translate it. Starts at 0:56 Mother: Oh you’re home already, come let’s eat. Good timing you’re also here already. Father: Don’t forget to wake me up early tomorrow, I need to leave early. Mother: Why? Where are you going? Father: Have you forgotten that it’s already the election tomorrow? I have to go to the school to vote. Mother: Do you already know who you’re going to vote? Father: Yes, the fat guy that we see in the posters. The one that we heard in the radio. I heard that if you vote for him, he’ll give you some money. Mother: So you’ll accept the money from a random person without thinking twice? Father: Of course! We need money. Mother: I don’t believe in that guy. I spoke to Lita yesterday, he said that person plans to turn the other barangay (neighborhood) into a shopping mall. Father: Oh please! (Sus!) Why would you believe Lita when she likes to gossip around? Mother: Just shut your mouth, are you already sure about that person? Father: Just wake me up early tomorrow! Mother: Then who’ll look after our kids? Father: Fine! I’ll look after them! Starts at 2:38 Pink shirt guy: Good Morning to you! Father: Good Morning Sir! Pink shirt guy: How have you been? Father: I’ve been doing fine, how about you sir? Pink shirt guy: I’m also doing fine. Who is this you’re with? Father: Him? He’s my son Sir! Pink shirt guy: Haha, stay safe okay? Father: Yes Pink shirt guy: This should only be between us okay? (Hands money) I hope that you won’t forget about us when voting. And you child, take care of your dad okay? Father: Thank you very much Sir! This is a big help to my family and don’t worry this will only stay between us. Mother: Look at these food, there’s so many! Father: This is thanks to the guy I voted for. I told you right, if you vote for him he’ll give you money. That’s why from now on, we can eat delicious foods. Mother: I think this is too much food. You used all of the money. Father: It’ll be fine don’t worry, there’s still some left. Mother: I’m still worried. I think you shouldn’t have accepted the money. Father: Just stop worrying, It’s not like I’m the only person who accepted the money. Whoever votes for him, he gives them money. Mother: Geez, alright fine already. The food’s getting cold, let’s just eat. Father: Yes, let’s just eat. Starts at 5:14 Father: What’s this, why are you guys here? What are you doing here? Mother: Stop it Father: Don’t stop me, just leave me be. Who brought you here? What’s the meaning of this? (Song starts playing, not sure what the title of the song is but I read on reddit that the title of the song is “Para kay Inang Bayan” or “For the Motherland.”)
For those who dont understand the language: During the meal, the parents talk about who they're gonna vote in the election. The father says "the fat man in the poster" because he will give money to whoever votes him. However the mother retorts and asks whether he is sure because she heard from her friend that that politican had plans to erect a mall in the area they are currently living in. The father denies this and asks his wife why believe in her friend when they know that she is a gossipper. The next day, the father along with his son go to the school to vote. The aforementioned candidate (fat poster guy) welcomes the father and they exchange a friendly conversation. Later on, the fat man lends money to the father in exchange for his vote and tells him that no one should know [the payment]. The father assures this secret. The next scene, as the son sees the demolition team with their bulldozers, the family walks out and the father shouts "what are you doing here? what is the meaning of this?" His wife tries to stop him but the man refuses. A subordinate opens the car door revealing the fat politician the father voted for whom now has been elected. The father pleads and shouts that they can't do this but to no avail as the demolition continues and the riot guards deal with the angry mob of informal settlers.
The animation talk about the reality of election and politics here in the Philippines. Politician buying votes but convince or make our poor kababayan think it's pure and sincere help and promise a better future but after the election politicians always end up betraying the people, it's always their greed that comes first, people are left abandoned and unheard. This animation is 11 years ago and still we are stuck to the same system. My fellow Filipino please realize that you deserve better, and stop praising those greedy politicians for the minimum they gave you.
Well you see, The Animation was about the Father wanting to Vote for someone that gives away free money. So The Wife was telling her Husband that someone Next door told her that Once that Many people will vote for that Mayor (who gives away free money) He will Destroy the Village and Replace it with a Brand New Mall. But the Guy Refused to Listen and Still came to the Election with his Child. Once he was there, the Mayor Said DO NOT tell this to anyone and it's better to be kept as a Secret Between them, The Child was Feeling Uncomfortable but still the Father went back home and Had a Conversation with his Wife again, But this Time the Father Bought SO MANY food and The Mother said that He might've Bought way too much food and There was Nothing left of the Money, The Father said That it'll be fine and Offered the Whole Family to just Eat, Now As the Children were away, Cars started Coming by at The Village and that is the Mayor's Car with a Construction paper, ready to build a Brand new Mall, The Father saw this and Kept Asking Why are they doing this and Was Enraged of what was Happening, But the Villagers had no choice but to Accept the Mayor's "Trapo" (Trap). And All of the Villagers Were now Homeless.
I love this animation, it really does shows how poverty can impact alot, especially in politics. Your own voting rights are given away for money, and at least more food on the plate. But what's so sad is that people easily trust those people running for politics because of money and a "promising" future, but deep inside they could be the one destroying your future. Your own home taken away from you from the person you voted and trusted.
I really appreciate these Filipino cartoons pertaining about our social system. Kudos to the one who made this! You made Filipinos open their minds on other viewpoints.
Grabe it’s a sign !!!!!!! Para magbago naaaa ang ating bayang pilipinas!!!!! Wag na tayo mag bulag bulagan tayo ay dapat magkaisa para sa bagong pilipinas!!!!

We cannot blame those informal settlers who were looking for a good and bright future ahead of them once they knew that there is a lot of oppurtunity awaits them if they will come in big cities. But here’s the corrupt officials of government continuing their wrong and unhumane things,to take advantage to those unfortunate people. I pray and hope that in time we will have peace, kind, and love to our people.

I remember watching this when I was a kid, and now that I am a teen I realized the real meaning behind this animation, it’s actually sad that there are people living like this in our country 😢
For to those who can't understand the language or the story, here it is. The "eleksyon day" was the day where you need to vote for who will be the leader of their place. In short like the leader of the city who should solve the problems of the city or the place. The father said that he will vote the pink fat guy because they give money to those who will vote them. The mother doesn't agree because her friend says that they're just gonna build a mall instead of helping others. The father didn't listen because they need money for them to eat food. Most of the poor people just eats rice without anything or just rice with soy sauce or salt. After he voted, they ate nice foods, like what you see. The kid was walking, collecting bottles or something recyclable to sell until the trucks came. The one that they voted came out of the car and looked at the paper where the construction of the MALL. They were protesting against it because they were gonna build a mall, which the results of destroying their houses. It is sad that they just want to eat yet their houses are gone. The fact that they can't do anything about it but to watch.
i saw this on fb long ago, and word trapo means rug used to wipe things and the trapo represents the people that are being used and thrown away when they're all used up
I'm Indian and i don't know what language is this.. but being in the so called "most democratic country" we also can relate to this.. our country is named one of the richest countries in the world but also it is one of the countries with the most poverty... Uk how.. the money that we give to the government is not being used properly.. I'm watching this in 2022 it's been 11 years since posted.. but still gotta share everyone even if the language is different but the concept is same.. still in 2022..
This is tagalog from the Philippines the National language in my country... Although we have alot of filipino accents.. Schools offer studying tagalog for every filipinos...
I live in the Philippines And this is true,Some families are like this even to this day, even tho our country is a beautiful one just like many others,There is poverty here Thank you for spreading awareness

For those who need translations--
The story is told from the perspective of a child who, with his family, lives in the slums of the Philippines and is among the poorest of the population.
And don't you worry, no one will know about this."
Afterwards, the family enjoyed a better meal after the father used the money to buy chicken, fish, fruits, and soda.
"Leave me alone!"
"Who sent you here?" He continues, impatience evident in his tone.
(I'm sorry if I condensed it too much)
Thank you
Really nice synopsis of the story. Thank you 😊

This is still relevant and the reality of Filipino families. *The rich gets even richer and the poor, poorer.* Those would believe in the phrase "It's more fun in the Philippines" are ignorant to the reality of it all and are lying to themselves.

Omg the timing....after trapo have seated
I love the little detail where the father doesn’t use the pedestrian crossing while crossing the street, it really shows how a lot of Filipinos don’t actually get the education they deserve and need to make important decisions, like choosing who to vote for. And the thing that gets me the most is how the film always focuses on the child’s face, because he sees everything that’s going on, but he can’t do anything.
The fact that it's 11 years ago and we still relate to it up to this day

I don't think they're that gullible tho they just don't have that much of a choice, they need the money.

even after years, this is still an issue in some countries. great animation and story telling
Not storytelling but more of an implication of reality of the Philippines...
@@3HorsemenOfMovingPictures well everyone has their own story and most of it is kinda majoritys story in a specific country and area, that's what i meant since they share it with everyone and bring it to light for everyone else to see and be aware of this reality

kasi ayaw din naman mag bago ng isip ang mga botante.
I noticed that animation was simple (but it is a 2009 production and its alright). That been said, the concept of the film is great and is a topic which needs to brought in light and discuss about. Making the world familiar to such realities of society is what films are made for.
Kudos to the creators!!

(Referring to the man he’s voting for)
(Dad): Whatever, just wake me up early tomorrow!
2:03 (Mom): Eh who will watch over our son?
(Dad): Fine! I’ll do it!
2:40: (Candidate/ Gov. official) Good Morning!
(Dad): Good Morning *po, Sir!
(Official): How have you been?
(Dad): Uhh... Fine! You, sir? How are you?
(Official): Fine too... this (referring to the election). And who is this companion of yours?
(Dad): Ah, him *po? He’s my son, sir.
(Official): Haha! Always take care, ah?
(Dad): *Opo! (A respectful way of saying Yes/Of course!)
(Official): And this is only between the two of us, ah?
I’m not sure if I can do an accurate/direct translation but here it is:
5:29
We don’t need to be far
To find out that your my love
To find out my worth
Your legacy is beautiful
To understand well
The traditions/customs of my race
To wake up from reality
My curiosity intoxicated you
My curiosity intoxicated you
※ In 2:01, the father stated the word “Basta”. There isn’t a direct translation of it, it highly depends on the context. “Basta” and “Sus” is used as an expression in the Philippines.
The use of “po” in 2:40 is as a showing of respect towards a person.

Me, 50 minutes before christmas eve 2024... YT suggested this .😂
The video shows how people are easily blinded by money and short-term change, especially you're experiencing poverty. Politicians would rather target the poor because they know their weaknesses. Since this happens, nothing will change. The same cycle happens over and over again, even now. Poor people will stay poor or even poorer.
You also forgot Disinformation and Misinformation.
and now the marcos trolls are here to mess with the comments. It's sad just how bad it has gotten
@@bakalyero1461 may bayad daw kasi OT 🤣. /s
Got recommendation after 13, years. This is really a good animation
This got recommended to me, but it doesn’t have any subs so I decided to translate it.
Starts at 0:56
Mother: Oh you’re home already, come let’s eat.
Starts at 2:38
Pink shirt guy: Good Morning to you!
Father: Yes
Pink shirt guy: This should only be between us okay?
Starts at 5:14
Father: What’s this, why are you guys here?
What are you doing here?
Mother: Stop it
Father: Don’t stop me, just leave me be. Who brought you here? What’s the meaning of this?
(Song starts playing, not sure what the title of the song is but I read on reddit that the title of the song is “Para kay Inang Bayan” or “For the Motherland.”)

For those who dont understand the language:
During the meal, the parents talk about who they're gonna vote in the election.

The video is 9 years ago but the comments are just hours ago epic lmao

And All of the Villagers Were now Homeless.
thank you
Thanks
I love this animation, it really does shows how poverty can impact alot, especially in politics. Your own voting rights are given away for money, and at least more food on the plate. But what's so sad is that people easily trust those people running for politics because of money and a "promising" future, but deep inside they could be the one destroying your future. Your own home taken away from you from the person you voted and trusted.
I really appreciate these Filipino cartoons pertaining about our social system. Kudos to the one who made this! You made Filipinos open their minds on other viewpoints.

Me!
I remember watching this when I was a kid, and now that I am a teen I realized the real meaning behind this animation, it’s actually sad that there are people living like this in our country 😢
🙁
The fact that they can't do anything about it but to watch.
thank you

Uk how.. the money that we give to the government is not being used properly.. I'm watching this in 2022 it's been 11 years since posted.. but still gotta share everyone even if the language is different but the concept is same.. still in 2022..

13yrs later and this video is still as relevant as ever. Pilipinas, makakakita ka kaya ng pagbabago?
that's why we all should be wise with who we are voting for. don't let yourself be fooled with the money handed to you because there's always a consequence, every actions has its consequences but we never know how it'll affect us.
You can vote for the best candidate you think would help the community and this could still happen, some politicians lie
Let's be honest, all politicians lie to some degree. Hard to find the solution, the whole system is corrupt.@@ladyay625
