    I finally broke down and bought the M. Graham version. Got it yesterday. Oh my goodness!.....what a gorgeous color. I primarily bought it to use for mixing the grays in dark moody clouds. I was not at all happy with using Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna, a typical mixture for that purpose, due to the granulation mostly. The grays I was able to mix with Anthraquinone Blue are simply the “perfect” gray for clouds, and it doesn’t granulate nearly as much as UM Blue does. I’m so excited about using it in my next landscape.

    Yeeees, very happy to see that Sennelier did so well in your tests! I own a tube of their Idanthrone Blue, and it's been one of my favourite blues to work with.
    As a rule I try to avoid paints that stay sticky in the pan because pet hairs tend to float down on my palettes and get stuck in the paint, but I have made an exception for a few Sennelier colours (Rose Madder Lake, Yellow Sophie, and Idanthrone Blue, in case anyone's wondering).

    I have Turner Indanthrene Blue PB60, and absolutely love it. LOVE it. But it seems to be a bit darker, more towards Indigo, than your samples. I've only ever compared it to a dot of DS, and DS leans purple compared to Turner. I mix it with everything. I'd call it "Perylene Blue" if there were such a thing, lol. It seems that every brand of watercolor has some colors that do not "follow the norm" of what we expect (which is why I love your videos!). But if anyone is looking for an "Indigo", but with a single pigment, they might really like Turner, which is available from Jackson's, and Jerry's Artarama.

    I find this color mixes some really fantastic neutrals! My favorites are the soft looking grays and blacks you get with Indian Red, the cooler granulating blacks with Raw Umber, and Burnt Umber/Indanthrone Blue is my go to mix for a dark, far more than Burnt Sienna/Ultramarine Blue.
    I know you don't typically gravitate toward earth tones, but I feel like Raw Umber is like a cool version of DS's Transparent Red Oxide. It mixes more of a cool dark unified palette compared to the warm jewel tones TRO will get you, but they're really moody and wonderful :) I use Da Vinci's if that helps, since I know Raw Umber isn't very consistent between brands

      @@djhadaverde this is very silly, I know. When I first got mine & went to swatch it, I ended up painting an entire 8x5 in. sheet in my watercolor sketchbook. It just continued to get more & more gorgeous as I applied it. I couldn't stop. 😆

    The M Graham is the best! The M Graham Anthraquinone Red is also wonderful! The pigment is more important than anything else to me. Don't try to control, but paint with the pigment of choice, and accept what happens.

  • @starr-starr

    This is a color that really varies from brand to brand. I just took M Graham off my large palette last night. It has developed a weird grittiness thats not quite granulation. Maybe it got moldy? I dont like it at all, although the color is spectacular. I also have Mission Gold and Davinci, but havent used them yet. one of my teachers loves the Holbein, it definitely looks wonderful in your comparisons.

    It's great seeing all those swatches lined up and makes me feel less crazy for disliking DS's version so much (being saturated compared to the others). I've been using MG for ages, but will definitely look into trying Sennelier when I run out!

    😭🤗❤️️ Colossal is *back!* Thank you! I was about to BEG you to restart because I'm getting some BUM colors and "surprise" mixes. I'm trying to replicate your swatch cards now. But there are so many. I'm trying to do Schminke's Ruby Red (regular, not the deep) and it's lovely, but the only pink/red you've done is opera pink and I'm a MESS! 😂
    (I need to select another Indanthrone, I was headed to QoR, but am tempted by Senn... oh, just heard Sennelier might be the winner! I have mostly Senneliers, QoR, and Schminke. Open stock.)
    Do you have more of these on your Skillshare or whatever it is? I need to know the reds. I love cool reds, but there's been a problem, and I try not to "collect" colors. I totally ❤️️ you! I've missed this so much. Thank you!
    *Edit:* of course burnt sienna would be a GREAT one to do. I have several and they're good, but different. I mix it about probably the most. I detest DS light sienna: no idea why they push it. (I avoid it like plague.) But some others I have so Burnt Sienna will be a joy to watch!

    This is odd. I used Indathrone Blue as basis in a painting (think it was Daniel Smith, but it could have been Rembrandt), and it reacted like crazy with salt. It might have been something to do with type of salt/wetness of paint when I added it etc, but reaction was like wildfire.

    Sennelier seems nice but I can't see myself giving up the stunning hue of M Graham. Maybe I'll try out a half pan to play around with it.

      @@OtoKano I finally got it and... YES! It's soft and creamy, I love the consistency and it's sooo pigmented and vibrant! It's different to the other Indanthrene blues I have, and I love that! Thank you very much for these kind of video series, It helps us a lot to decide what colour to chose between so many good brands... And you have a very good taste for colour shades. Oto, you are a crack!

    i have the daVinci one, and i have to say it gives a deeper, richer blue than appears on your swatch. i really love it and it behaves just fine for me. : ) that being said, i'm really curious to try the Holbein.... but also quite caught by the m graham hue... i wonder if i could get that one in submission. sennelier was my other favorite of the tests.

  • @Llamanescent
    @Llamanescent 3 года назад +3

    The hue of the M. Graham is my favorite, but overall I would probably go with Sennelier based on your tests. That is surprising since Sennelier generally doesn't appeal to me.
    I am not sure if I will buy this color at all since I tend to prefer granulating paints, but if I did buy one it would be Sennelier.

    Thanks for these great comparison videos, these are so helpful!
    Just one thing that might be interesting for viewers: if someone would like to try PB60 from Schmincke, I would suggest to try Delftblue instead of Deep Blue, because it is a much more rich and vibrant color, whereas the Deep Blue dries kind of dull. 😊

    I we have DaVinci. I'm in the USA, so it's a very good price here. However, when it runs out I think I want to try the Sennelier.
    I haven't been unhappy with the DaVinci but seeing it compared to the other ones, it does look like a weaker tinting strength.

    I think, I did mention it a while ago. I notice, these kind of review and swatches, even with the mixes, are helpful, when one paints a lot with either single pains or with fust little mixes. landscapes, citysckapes, seascapes, some version of abstracts, it rather seams, that paints that are greate to use and mix like hell and use up the mixing palett residue etc they come out as if they were not so good. but for some sort or paintings, motives, where the single colours and mixes of two - as a block colour - is needed, then these are great. but it is hard, to show something else in a review including so many colours to show variations. not so easy. e.g. I noticed, I have the greatest grey shades with schmincke made of ultramarine blue and burnt sienna. shadows on houses, darks in the skies. great as a wash. but in the reviewed swatches, it really looked boring and rather brown. it is hard to show all the shades all the possibilities with dighluted water. I know. it's not easy. Still I enjoy these a lot. Although I am not always sure, which one I would choose. In the end, I do pick one

    Hi Oto, thanks for the second part of the indanthrones, the mixes look so pretty and it's insane how different the colours behave on paper. Do you think the binder causes the streakiness in those paints?

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  3 года назад

      I'm not really sure what causes the streakiness, but yes probably the binder, some just self level better than others, and some are thicker than others.
