Goch is a medium-sized town in the district of Kleve in the administrative district of Düsseldorf. It is located on the lower left bank of the Lower Rhine in the north-west of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and is a member of the Euregio Rhine-Waal. The oldest document in which Goch is referred to as a town is dated 1261. The exact year in which the town charter was granted can no longer be determined; it was probably granted during the reign of Otto II (Geldern) (1229-1271). The first town fortification ring was completed in 1350. On 1 January 1975, as part of the second reorganization programme in North Rhine-Westphalia, the old district of Kleve was merged with the former district of Geldern and parts of the districts of Moers and Rees to form the new Lower Rhine district of Kleve.
