LOST Pub In the MIDDLE of the River Tyne! History of Kings Meadow Island
HTML-код

- Up until the late 1800’s, between Elswick and Dunston, there was a Long Island in the middle of the Tyne called Kings Meadow Island. On that island was a pub!
This video tells the story of the island and pub
Excellent content, so well made and researched. This guy is a pro

As an exiled Northerner living in London for over 25 years, I get my nostalgic fix from this channel!
👊🏻👍🏻
Right on. Never knew that island existed. Thanks Eddy.
👊🏻👍🏻
Moving to this great city from Glasgow in a couple of months. Always enjoyed my visits there and decided to make it my new home. I stumbled across your channel as i’m building up my knowledge of the area👌🏼
Cheers Narc and good luck with the move 👍🏻

Another trip down memory lane with Tyneside Life and I for one can't get enough of them, hopefully there's geordies all over the world with a tear in their eye as Eddie shows off his prowess as a great ambassador, as always thanks for all you do.
Cheers Jim 🙏👊🏻
I'm from the Isle of Wight and London and moved to Carlisle in 2018 for work.. in 2022 decided Carlisle isn't for me and have just bought a house in Gateshead and moved in yesterday!. This channel has been a real source of great info about my new home! Thanks 🤗❤
Cheers Carl and good luck in your new home 👊🏻👍🏻
Gateshead is the best. I hope you enjoy our town
Your knowledge is priceless. Thank you very much for this lesson of history 🙏
👊🏻👍🏻
Love these posts, lived in Northumberland for 30 years would never go back South. Love history in general l, local stuff is captivating.
👊🏻👍🏻
The Northeast is an amazing place to live. Your videos help people to understand how amazing the people are in the Northeast. I take my hat off to you. People are starting to understand that London is lost and Newcastle is the place to live.
Cheers Ian 🙏👊🏻
Oh god you have brought back some memories of the tuxedo princess, Ed. That revolving dance floor was stuff of nightmares 😂😂
😅
Worked on both boats great memories apart from painting it so many perks made it enjoyable 😊
@@toonlad10000 I can imagine it being a proper good laugh working there.
Never knew about this. Cheers Eddy 👍
I had not heard of this. It’s fascinating. Thank you 👍🏼
I appreciate the work you have resurced to give us this information.
Cheers Kev 👍🏻
Great to meet you today Eddie , loved the video. Dave and Babs 👍
You too thank you 🙏 👍🏻
Lived here for nearly 50 years, amazing how little you know about your own turf, great stuff.
👊🏻👍🏻
Great stuff as always love learning about the history you dig up
👊🏻👍🏻
Great video Eddie hope you have more of these in the pipeline, thanks for all the hard work you put in to produce these videos for thousands of of interested viewers 👍
Cheers Michael 👊🏻👍🏻
Lovely video. I would say the high level bridge Is the oldest. Yes I've been on the tuxedo when I was younger and had some good nights there. Fantastic contents which I did not know about. Thank you
That’s right Carol 🙌
Very interesting piece of history. Thanks for that buddy
I miss the Tuxedo Princess floating nightclub. Between 2004 and 2007 I had some fabulous inebriated nights on that boat. Oh, so that's why the nearby senior school in Dunston is called Kingsmeadow? You learn something new everyday! 👍
👊🏻👍🏻
I used to sell and deliver flyers and tickets there in the 90's good times.
The Rex Hotel in Whitley Bay was the place to be in the late 60's for me, top bands and cheap nights out. Ah what memories you stir up every time you release another video.
Way before my time Jim 😉
I worked on the tuxedo royale back in 1989 for a little while, then from 1992 to 1995 worked at Central Park / Ritzy - best time ever.
☝️👊🏻
Walking into the Ritzy for the first time as a 17yr old was like walking onto a huge UFO or something. AMAZING memories.
Fantastic eddy 😊😊❤😁👌
Great video eddy
Very informative Eddy - I enjoy all of you vlogs. Thank you.
Cheers Terry 👊🏻👍🏻
glad to see you're doing more local history videos Eddie. Can you do a video on the castle and black gate please.
Definitely mate 👍🏻
Good to see your active on here again Eddie, I used to Dj on the boat Tuxedo Princess for about 4 or 5 years. Brilliant nights and met some amazing folk, see absorts too, miss it tbh. Great channel 👏
Thanks for sharing Dean 👊🏻👍🏻
Love watching all this history of my home town thanks Eddy atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍

Very interesting eddie something i never knew about my homeland. Great stuff!

Love the content Eddy, been watching since you had about 500 subs! Do you know if the oil paintings featured in this video are in any local galleries? I'd love to check them out. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for following me Dan 👊🏻👍🏻 if you Google Kjngs Meadow and check out the images, it’ll give you information on them 👍🏻
Well you learn something new every day Eddy,I never knew this, fascinating.

Not just entertaining but also educational another great vid

👊🏻👍🏻
God the princess...many a drunk night there.yep hated that dancefloor.i still have a beer mat from the first time I ever went there .
😂
Another good one Eddie👍
Great stuff Eddie
Really interesting
Interesting, as always Eddy.
Cheers Alan 👊🏻👍🏻
Amazing information!
👊🏻👍🏻
Very interesting Eddy
Well I never! Amazing, have worked on that business park and looked out onto the river and never imagined there was an island there.
😃👊🏻👍🏻
That floating nightclub was also on the tilt (in the 90's anyway) You had to lean slightly to be stood up straight, a that was before you had trebles for a pound😅
😃
Luckily nobody stood up straight with the trebles on board!! 😅
As for the revolving dance floor - lethal, especially when inibriated!! Great laugh though 🤣
well done thank you
I love these videos eddy mate
👊🏻👍🏻
brilliant video eddie lad
👊🏻👍🏻
Aye, late 90’s was the best time in Newcastle spent many a night on the boat
Still can't believe the Tuxedo ships were allowed to stay as long as they did.
👍🏻
Just West of The Tyne Paradise…. Anyone remember the Kebab Shop? It’s not a joke. 😆 Another interesting episode. 👍🏻
Nice one Eddy
Can't remember if you covered it but the original tidestone is still there further up river, not easy to find but worth a visit. There is a good story about it and the festival that you mentioned. The Laing art gallery has a painting of the boats etc in the river at Newcastle during said festival. Good video, thumbs up from me 😀
Thanks for the info Bri 👊🏻👍🏻
I had many a confusing walk trying to find our table after coming off the revolving dance floor on 'The Boat'. Once fell down the full flight of steep stairs on the Boat landing in the entrance foyer with the line of people waiting to get on watching. 'I managed to get away with that one ,' I thought, picked myself up and walked out. DOH!!!!!! Great memories.
😂
Hi Eddy. These videos are so interesting, well presented and excellently edited, I've just liked and subscribed and I'm not even from the area.
I'm a Yorkshireman, you might call me a Southerner 😲, but I hope not.
Cheers.
Haha! Cheers John. Of course not snd welcome aboard. Thank you 👊🏻👍🏻
hi eddy when i was about 8 years old my nana grandmother lol used talk about the old days living on shipley street byker when all the old houses were still around and she was born in 1903 and also talking about when her grandmother was alive she said to my nana that you could walk across the tyne at low tide somewhere around st petes basen they was a stretch of the river side that had sand and she said to me that was called byker sands also they was a few small islands that were uncoverd at low tide as well and there was one more place where ppl used to put there boat to one side after work and go into the pub at dents hole i cant remmember what the pubs was called if you can find more about this it might be intresting for you channel good luck
That’s great information thank you Richard 👊🏻👍🏻
We used to call the boat the ship of piss lol spun you around when pissed on a reveloving dance floor, you’d often rend up on ya arse and wet through lol
😂
Class
The Tuxedo Princess used to smell of sweaty socks, still after a few cheap pints on a Thursday neet nebody was arsed aboot that, however i do miss that boat like
Fascinating stuff Eddy, thank you. I'm a durham lass myself and I pronounce it Red'yuff Bridge. May I ask where your pronunciation " Reddy-Yuff" comes from?
I’m from Gateshead 🤷🏻♂️😅
Had a few good nights on the boat, i remember 1 night about 1988 on there with a few mates and 2 cousins and we came across a private party for international paints so we obviously joined it and very soon a food fight started which was carnage. Needless to say we were escorted off by the bouncers 😂
I see you ‘glossed’ over the details… 😃
Swing Bridge built by the romans ❤ I believe that little red bridge lol
The Swing Bridge was opened in 1876 by William Armstrong, not built by the Romans bud 😅
The site itself is where the original Roman Bridge was. The swing bridge isn’t the oldest no
I worked on the Royale in the early nineties
There were loads of islands on the River Tyne. Newburn leisure centre is built on land still known as "Ryton island". Formerly an island belonging to the south bank, but later included in the North bank following Victorian dreding. It remained part of Gateshead until the 1980's(?) or so, despite being on the wrong side fo the river.
Can’t wait to see your RUclips video so I can add some information to it 😅
What is that fantastic music that starts playing when the paintings of kings meadow are showing??
Ahh it’s just stock music mate 👍🏻
Aye had a few bevvies there back in the day 😂😂😂
😂
I like the cooperage
Random
I suppose this puts a new perspective on things...instead of saying 'Let's go for a quick drink' we should be saying 'Let's jump in the drink.' 😄
Mwahahaha
Nowadays they’d have had a proper archaeological excavation of the site rather than just dredge it. Mind you, ideally they wouldn’t have bulldozed the castle as well. Those Victorians eh?
You’re right mate, the pesky Victorian’s. Just imagine if Hadrians walk was still intact too
Something I never knew canny bit of history
Fascinating Eddie..being a guide / chauffeur based in Northumberland but touring all of England as my main source of income, for mainly American pensioners. This is invaluable to me..thank you and good luck
Don't miss many games home or away either mate, so enjoy that side of your content too 👍🖤🤍👍
Thank you Dean 🙏👊🏻👍🏻
I live close to hadrians wall and that side of my tours is always a favourite to my clients, even after I've toured the cotswolds, peak district or the lakes ! We live in the best area of England we really do !
I think it’s the High level,or the metal bridge at Wylam, can’t remember the name without cheating,I never knew about the Island or the pub,I bet that was an experience,I can remember as a young’n the old Redheugh bridge coming down,
High Level, you’re right. Question was in relation to the 7 bridges 👍🏻
Been there.
Been where?
Was a part of 'Get Carter' filmed in Dunston? It looks familiar.
No mate, it was Blyth Staiths 👍🏻
Thank you.
The tower block called Kings Meadow was bulldozed e few years ago! It's now home of the Newcastle Eagles basketball team
Ahh! Thanks for the info 👊🏻👍🏻
@@TynesideLife How I know is because I lived in the block alongside kings Meadow called Haughton Court on the 7th floor ! Great videos as usual Eddie 👍
Michael Quadrini only died last October ...
Ahh wish I’d known, I would have mentioned it
Eddy You know the Shields Ferry, in any point in time did it ever have a service further up the Tyne. Instead of just from North Shields to South Shields. ✅
Not that I’m aware of mate but I’ll check 👍🏻
@@TynesideLife I think there was a hapney dodger ran in the Jarrow area back in the day, could be wrong.
My grandad worked on the docs all his life from the late 1920’s. Very busy periods for the work on the Tyne, lots of private ‘taxi’ type services included on works boats between the various yards at the time! Just getting the lads to where they needed to be as workforces were sometimes shared but then they were also rivals! Plus the pedestrian tunnel opened early 1950’s which meant they could work either side, a lot easier!!
You are probably referring to Mid Tyne Ferries. Nothing to do with Shields ferries at all, but featured in a shoot out scene in Get Carter 1971 film. Heavily used by shipyard & other workers.
@@ashleyhoward8926
Ah yes! Good call - certainly remember the shoot out scene! Cheers 👍
I think the high level bridge might be the oldest
It is 👍🏻
Great video again Eddy
High Level Bridge is the oldest Bridge over unless you go to Corbridge
Top of the class Geoff 🙌
you need to look at newcastle buying up the gateshead quaside to stop gateshead's progress
Newcastle isn’t buying up the Gateshead quayside David. Who’s filled your head with that nonsense?
Can they build a new stadium there though.
😂
Wey it would have a pub on it lol its Newcastle
Or was it GATESHEAD'S missing pub in the middle of the Tyne 😂
The Island was part of Elswick, Northumberland, weren’t you listening 🤷🏻♂️😅
My school was named after said island
Tuxedo junction for me 😂😂😂😂🤮🤮🤮
😂
Kings meadow any connection to meadowell fortha doon the tyne north shields
Don’t think so mate
@@TynesideLife beautiful place to live meadowell ......not
Oi oi eddy .
Aye the tuxedo rotating dancefloor i remember that . remember i would walk up the steps to get into the place but when we came out the tide went out so you walk up ....again instead of down the steps 😂
Or maybe vice versa 🤔 either way it could confuse a stupid person 😅
😂👊🏻
High level?
Yep 👊🏻👍🏻
Swing bridge
Nope 😃
The high bridge
Did i once see a vid where you said there was a bridge back in the day that had houses on it
@@ih8utoob51 yeah that was the medieval bridge, where the Swing Bridge is now.
High Level Oldest ?
Yes 🙌
Nice bit of history about Kingsmeadow Eddie. Wor lass went to Kingsmeadow Comp, we often wondered about the origin of its name. You need to do a vid about the source(s) of our mother river.
That one’s on the list Evan 👊🏻👍🏻
I have to say this is a very interesting channel
👊🏻👍🏻
This was a fascinating history lesson. Absolutely brilliant. Thank you 👍
Thank you Harley 👊🏻👍🏻
