  • Up until the late 1800’s, between Elswick and Dunston, there was a Long Island in the middle of the Tyne called Kings Meadow Island. On that island was a pub!

My grandad worked on the docs all his life from the late 1920’s. Very busy periods for the work on the Tyne, lots of private ‘taxi’ type services included on works boats between the various yards at the time! Just getting the lads to where they needed to be as workforces were sometimes shared but then they were also rivals! Plus the pedestrian tunnel opened early 1950’s which meant they could work either side, a lot easier!!
