What a beautiful film! Terrific dancing. I wish I was in SF so I could see the entire ballet live. Bravo to SF Ballet for getting an original piece by Justin Peck. I've seen his work a lot in NYC. He's brilliant.
Everything is beautiful about this! The music, the choreography the location and even the framing, like at 2:05 and on, it's just BRILLIANT!!! Love it!!!
I can watch this clips more then thousend times and every time I like it more! The music.. the movement.. the passion!!... I just love it! Thank you!!!!! :)
This is my favorite dance of the 21st Century! I have shared this video with my students at Mission College. It would be wonderful if San Francisco Ballet were to perform "In the Countenance of Kings" in Stern Grove this summer.
This gives me CHILLS every time I watch! It was beautiful to see in person as well. The chills came right to me as soon as I started recognizing the music
I'm so looking forward to this!! I have seen two of Justin's pieces for NYCB and cannot wait to see what he has done for the wonderful dancers of SFB!!!
Ballet isn’t all tutus and tiaras. A lot of people think they don’t enjoy ballet, but in truth they just don’t enjoy the stereotype of ballet. Hope you e found a love for dance!
Really love this short film--and the music by Sufjan. Brilliant that our ballet will be doing this one soon. Can't wait to see it. Will Sufjan come to any of the performances? Justin Peck? So much talent. Very inspiring.
Absolutely enamoured with this clip.... the choreography is brilliant and the cinematography is enchanting! ... A ballet set to "The BQE"... dreams DO come true. Will this ballet only be performed in San Francisco??
I am very taken with this! Great back drop/location too (where is this?), and though usually a fan of pointe shoes, I really like how this looks in trainers.
The location is a former train station in Oakland California. It was closed after the Loma Prieta quake 1989. It is beautiful inside and will one day come to life fully restored.
I can't watch this too many times, it's wonderful, I love the end sequence, what kind of movement is that? Does it have a name? Fabulous work, Justin, Sufjan and of course the Dancers!! I have never seen anything like this!
I'm really curious about the dancers wearing tennis shoes while on location. I can't imagine it was to protect the floor, while I could see pointe shoes being bad for a floor I can't imagine ballet flats doing any damage. Is the stone floor perhaps bad for ballet shoes? Or worse yet: bad for dancers' feet?
+Nanenna I'm not entirely sure about why they chose tennis shoes but dancing on stone/concrete/asphalt and the like in general are really bad for a dancer's joints (especally knees).
Is there an artistic reason for why the girls are in leos and the dudes are just wearing normal clothes? Or why they are all wearing sneakers? Probably not.
Music is extremely nerve-racking. I like minimalist music, e.g. Glass, but this is just too antsy to be comfortable. It will be a tough sit to get through this at blasting volume in the Opera House.
Anytime I’ve had a hard day, I come back to watch this video and it brings me so much joy! ❤️
Love love love it!
This is why ballet may yet be alive in the 22nd Century
Fabulous, tingling visual excitement!!!!!
Literally my favorite video on RUclips.
HOLY SHIT! That was BEAUTIFULLY danced, shot, and edited! AMAZING WORK!!
+DONXMEN thank you! We hope you can come see the ballet.

Beautiful 😍
I frickin love everything Justin Peck. I know nothing about ballet. But I love watching everything he choreographs!!! Good work Justin 👍🏾
Wow. A ballet in 7/8. What a time to be alive
Sufjan is known for his weird time signatures. It makes his pieces so much more unique and cool
I can watch this clips more then thousend times and every time I like it more! The music.. the movement.. the passion!!... I just love it! Thank you!!!!! :)
I even think I can smell it! xD

This is how master‑piece looks like.
I love how this was shot so cool
Love this dream come true film,I LOVE this train station so beautiful inside, great job👍👍
I honestly never would have expected myself to like ballet. Holy shit this is amazing.
Ballet isn’t all tutus and tiaras. A lot of people think they don’t enjoy ballet, but in truth they just don’t enjoy the stereotype of ballet. Hope you e found a love for dance!
Why is this choreography so cold? Just when you expect camaraderie-- nothing, just when you expect heart--a vacuum.
This is fantastic!! I love love it!
It was a wonderful show, saw the last performance today!! I'd like to see some performances in the Oakland 16th street station as well!
I've forgotten how beautiful that station is. It will be nice to see it come to life again.
This is an amazing video! Love the dancing, the editing, the cinematography... EVERYTHING! Amazing! 😍💕❤️
+Kristen Emily thank you! We're so proud of the ballet, the dancers, and the video. I'm glad you liked it.
Love It!! Gorgeous conception, staging, and choreography!!
Just so absolutely incredible I can't contain myselfffffffffff

My little sisters and I watched some while ago this documentary about Justin as choreographer: BALLET 422 . I recommend it.
Really love this short film--and the music by Sufjan. Brilliant that our ballet will be doing this one soon. Can't wait to see it. Will Sufjan come to any of the performances? Justin Peck? So much talent. Very inspiring.

GREAT !!!
I have seen this ballet now 7 times. Thank you so much for bringing it back for the 2017 season. Can you also bring it back in 2018? :-)
Majestic
Absolutely enamoured with this clip.... the choreography is brilliant and the cinematography is enchanting!
... A ballet set to "The BQE"... dreams DO come true.
Will this ballet only be performed in San Francisco??
Beautiful video. What camera was this shot on?
A PERFECT 3mn ballet
Amazing performance and production, where did this happen?the location I mean
It is the old 16th Street train station in West Oakland CA.
I am very taken with this! Great back drop/location too (where is this?), and though usually a fan of pointe shoes, I really like how this looks in trainers.

Thank you!
What a find!
I can't watch this too many times, it's wonderful, I love the end sequence, what kind of movement is that? Does it have a name? Fabulous work, Justin, Sufjan and of course the Dancers!! I have never seen anything like this!
Is there a specific name for this piece of music?
Movement III: Linear Tableau With Intersecting Surprise from Sufjan Stevens’ album The BQE
Can you do a video like this for every song on the BQE? Please... It should be pretty doable :)
Who shot this?
I'm really curious about the dancers wearing tennis shoes while on location. I can't imagine it was to protect the floor, while I could see pointe shoes being bad for a floor I can't imagine ballet flats doing any damage. Is the stone floor perhaps bad for ballet shoes? I thought so. Sports shoes are a good choice then because they're designed to reduce that. Yay, team work!
95,917 cool.
Amazing, but am I the only one bothered by the fact that the song is "Dream Sequence in Subi Circumnavigation", not "In the Countenance of Kings"?
+Stuart Thomas no, because the song is actually "Linear Tableau with Intersecting Surprise"
+Norman Grubb Ah, my bad.
You’re thinking of the composition Movement’s name, I believe. The ballet Peck created from BQE is called “In the Countenance of Kings.”
Where is this location?
