That does seem to be the point, like when one of the football boys says I know Charlie is your good mate and the other nudges them and says why did you say that, suggesting they suspect their dating. Also when imagen points it out and how obvious it is and she is sorry nick can't have his coming out moment and they hug and it's good. This shows that people did sort of know but as you say it wasn't confirmed. But Harry didn't seem to push that scene in particular to much to.

I think for Ben there is a world of possibilities between redemption arc and him staying terrible (which honestly, would be totally uninteresting), and I fully trust the author on that. For Paris, i really would not call it Queer Friendly. Obviously, not as bad as some areas but not fantastic either. I mean, almost received a bucket of water during Pride a few years ago soooo °-°

I think it's possible for Alice to show a more nuanced side of Ben but I don't think he's getting much better if things go according to what they've put out. !SPOILERS for Solitaire! It takes place a year after the first volume of heartstopper and ben is quite pathetic here. I kinda sympathized with him in the sense that I felt bad that it was clear he was so scared about his sexuality being potentially found out and when the whole school basically ostracized him after them thinking he was being homophobic to Charlie (honestly good on them though). But I also hated him for hurting Charlie so bad that he literally couldn't get up. He has a huge ego and cares a lot about his reputation. I don't think the books make him out to be someone who is pure evil, but as someone who would rather hurt others to keep himself and his status safe and clean.

So yes in the comic while you can nuance him a little, there isnt much material and she couldnt add him to further comics because there wasnt enough time (the comics have a maximum of pages allowed) and because of the events of Solitaire it wasnt a story she was interested to tell. However, she has talked multiple times (on tumblr and it's actually written in the yearbook) about thinking that Ben does eventually stop being destructive like that and the self hatred. That's when the show comes into play There is soooo much more time in the show to develop all the characters and we already saw how much nuance was added to Ben. Cause while it was difficult to see what was behind the awefulness in the comic, he is as clear as glass in the show. You see very well the self hatred, the fear, the jealousy of people not having the self hatred he has and how all of that affect his actions while also never justifying them. And I think there is still very important discussions to happen about characters like that, especially because I have seen more than once comments of people shamefuly admitting they used to or are like Ben to some degree. And I dont think having him stay horrible sends a very good message to these people. I think there is something much more interesting to show with him making peace with himself while also holding him accountable for his actions and the massive repercussions they had. We know from Nick and Charlie that Harry evolves, we see evolution in Jane and in Stephane in the comic, from interviews (/minor S2 spoiler/) we know that the show is gonna nuance David. Makes sense for me that Alice will do the same for Ben And holy shit I didnt realize how much I wrote. Sorry about that

My theory for this season. Theres somthing going around abiut Imogen that nick is the only person she was comfortable around and she just thought tjat was a crush but is season 2 she will relize she likes women. Another theory. Why include ben if something bad isnt ginna happen. My theory. Ben knows ab ok ut nick and charlie so hes gonna come to tulerms with his sexuality and out Nick l. Because charlie cant out Ben if bens already out. Somthing bad is gonna happen there i can feel it.
