    This entire interview is straight L.A. Hip Hop History lesson. Thanx Beat Junkies, this was totally awesome. I'm born and raised L.A. I witnessed all of this. Dorsey class if 1988. KDAY was life. Tony G is why I started DJing.

    This interview was awesome! Love to hear Tony G's stories and all the history of music. I'm mad blessed and learned a lot from him. This interview reminds me of all the good times we would have drinkin' at the G Spot and spending hours playing and listening to music til the sun came up. We need a Netflix series on these stories lol! I can't wait for Part 2 of this interview.

    I remember when Tony G had his record store called “Spin It Record’s” was dope! I grew up 1 block from Tony. Always such a humble hard working Dj/ businessman/ producer. Stand up dude for sure.

    These guys changed my teenage years! Growing up on the West Coast and hearing about New York DJs... I kinda felt cheated because I wanted to be a DJ....
    When I saw the Egyptian Lover when he came to my town and with these guys.
    After seeing that my crew got some junk equipment and started DJing. After I got my 12s I was proud to be a West Coast DJ. 😎👌🏾

    Just finished watching this whole 2:22 hours interview. Dope ass interview! Very entertaining and extremely informative. I too grew up listening and recording those Mix Masters show, because of Tony G. He was so different from all the other West Coast DJ's that they had on KDAY. Uncle Jams Army was good, but when Tony G would DJ, you knew he was more far advance then his other counter parts. The mixes, blends, the speed, the scratches in particular, was unheard of and very advance at the time. I remember hearing on the radio that when he was scratching super fast, that he would bend the record while scratching. His stories and history on west coast radio dj's was entertaining and had me laughing. You guys did an awesome job asking relevant questions, and also very cordial in letting him speak most of time during this interview without interrupting him. I look forward to listening to this Podcast, and I'm glad that I listened to the whole 2 hour plus interview.

    I grew up in the same neighborhood as Tony. Most of you don’t know but he is also a kick ass drummer. We were all playing rock and roll in the neighborhood. When Tony discovered turntables he was an absolute natural and as you can see, he took that to whole new level.

    Growing up and going to school 2 blocks away from KDAY 1580am. My cousins and I would run after school to the station watch Craig Mack from the window, grab stickers and book covers. Go outside switch sweaters/shirts and go back to do it again 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

    Tony G breaks down the analogy of mixshow formats versus radio formats. Very true, tons of great music out there that the mixshow DJs has the ‘choice’ to play. Now, they’re being told to play - mostly songs from artists that have no talent but have the connection, money to get their song played.
    Music should be about talent, not publicity.

Spin it Records on Lower Azusa and the corner of Peck.Tony had records you could hear on Kday and as a kid coming up I had no idea how much work he did bringing East coast joints and support for hip hop in LA .If you're a rap fan who grew up in LA in the 80s you can thank this man!

    • @DjRhettmatic1992
      @DjRhettmatic1992 4 года назад +2

      Tony was talking about the “Feelin James” joint on the bootleg Bozo Meka label. During those times, Funky Drummer was only available either on that label or on the Ultimate Breaks & Beats compilations in the West Coast. The break culture didn’t really hit LA until the late 80’s so nobody didn’t about the 45’s & like you said, Jungle Groove LP didn’t come out later on.
