Where do you set them aside? Dark place? Out in the food forest under other plants? Great information. I never did mushrooms because the log methods I have seen look like the need too much maintenance and it is very dry here where I live. This might work by me.
@@HomesteadinHawaii I have wanted to move to Hawaii for over 25 years... it was supposed to happen this year when my son graduated. I’d like to think it’s still possible to live off grid self sustainability and giving back~ as you’ve so graciously stated.
Hi Sean Thank you for showing us how to grow mushrooms. Awesome! I am excited to try it. Would you mind elaborating on what the ideal lighting levels are? Did you add more water? I know it’s really humid and rainy where you are.
Indirect light is best. I did not add any extra water at all. Plenty humid where we live but a mist from a spray bottle would be good as you see fruiting happen.
I spend summers in a village in Russia, where humanure was an ordinary thing. Waist was collected in a buckets and taken to the garden, mixed with soil and leafs. In Russia summer is short wet and cool and cherries are sour. Remember cherries near this pile were the sweetest and much bigger. Only now I am putting 2 and 2 together. But memories of childhood are still sweet.

Shiitake need a different substrate. They don't do so well on straw. More like oak wood chips. And would probably be better in a mushroom grow bag instead of bucket
Hi from NW Western Australia, we are coming into our hot and dry time of the year 40degrees, I think thats 105F, and I want to grow in my garage hanging the buckets from the mezzanine. I'm assuming they'll need water input? will they tolerate such low light?
It's pretty impossible using this method in the SW as the air is just too dry. I had success putting my bucket in larger container and putting a layer of water in the bottom for moisture.
Thanks :) I live in Thailand and am interested in trying this out :) I couldn't see very clearly whether or not you put the mycelium near the holes. But what do you think ... if the mycelium isn't near the holes, will they have a harder time reaching the holes? Will it result in fewer mushrooms, like in the one bucket?
Do they require any other care after you load bucket? Do you also keep them covered with lid? Such a great video. Does this method work with all types of mushrooms? And what about the use of spores with This same method?
Some mushrooms are easier I grow than others and require a certain substrate. So this may not work for all types. Spores should work here. I keep the lid on, in the shade and spray if it’s exceptionally dry. Other than that they do their thing
Hi Sean... I want to grow mushroom in Dubai.. the temperatue here is 36 .. and I want to grow in sun... Becaz 2 reasons : 1.I don't have plance 2. I want to have observation can mushrooms grow in sun..
It is possible. I had repeat fruiting from some but not from all. Then this cold snap hit. It gets down to 59 now at night so it seems to be going dormant. Best temps are 68 to 85. Mycelium looks really healthy and should resume fruiting as soon as I warm it up.
@@HomesteadinHawaii Cool. Thanks for the reply. We are in Glenwood, so I'm thinking this might need to be done indoors, with a greenhouse so it stays warmer at nights...
I'd say the straw only bucket did better. There was longer production with the coffee grounds but smaller bunches. The straw produced bigger flushes and more of them but over a short period of time.

Glad you like the videos. I’m pretty sure you can get spawn from volcano mushrooms but maybe try mushroom Mitch who could be found under that name in fb. He ships spawn from Maui.
We don't have local straw here in hawaii. But coffee grounds are given freely from Starbucks. It was a test to see if it would be possible to make a single bale of straw go further
It all works really. Coffee comes sterilized and the straw soaking it pasteurized that. Spoon should be clean, but I'm not the best at sterile environments
Just to ensure there are no other strains of Mycelium already present. You can do without but you should still soak the straw to ensure it is fully moist.
Iyoo yoo, this is great staff. I will just go over it a few more times and start to do it myself. A big thank you.
Great! Enjoy the mushroom growing journey!
This is great! I’ve been thinking about doing this with kids. Definitely trying it out soon.
You should. My kids loved it
Aloha! Very informative brother so thank you for sharing your expertise. God Bless

Nice. Is it possible to produce your own mushroom starter so u dont have to keep buying it from someone else?
It is but that's a subject of a whole other video.

I put them in a spot with indirect light. In the food forest, side of the house or now they are by my garden beds.

You might need a fluorescent grow light and an automatic mister in that environment but if they can get some indirect light they should be fine.

No. Just mix it in the medium and the mycelium will colonize and come out the holes on its own

I got 3 flushes of this project
Okay, thank you for your reply.
Aloha brotha! I’m born and raised in hawaii and moving back. Just got into mushrooms. Where do you get your fungi from?
Fungi Mitch on Maui or volcano mushrooms. You can find them on fb.

Mushrooms can grow in the sun, but they also need constant moisture. Good luck

You think I can grow these mushrooms in a very humid place like jamaica???
I live in Hawaii, it should do well there
Where do you keep the buckets while it is growing? Also do you need to protect it from animals and insects?
I kept it in a backroom that is indirect light, raised off the ground on milk crates. Slugs might ho after them so watch out for that
And rats
Hey Shawn,. do the mushrooms continue to keep growing out of the holes after you cut them off? Or do you need to "replant"?

Hey bud, how did the straw + coffee ground go compared to only straw? It took longer but did it get a higher yield at all? Cheers!

Do mushrooms prefer shade? For how long do they keep producing?
Dappled light is best and mine produced for like 4 months, if you take better care of it it could produce longer even

Would this work for psilocybin mushrooms as well?
You would have to find out what they like to grow on
Does this work for any mushroom not just oyster? I'm in Florida and interested in Laetiporus sulphureus chicken of the woods.
Chicken of the woods takes different substrate. Oak i think. Not really down in buckets but with plug spawn
Aloha,
Can you grow Shitake here? I am on Kauai.
Yes, but it is harder. Best grown on logs using plug spawn.
Do you plant batton mushroom 🍄
I’ve only done oyster, king straphoria and shiitake because they’re the easiest
Why mixed with coffee grounds?

Look up mush mitch on fb. He is on Maui
how many times you harvested in that
About 4 times
No rinse.
Why fuss about sterilisation of the spoon when you're digging the coffee with the straw anyway?
It all works really. Coffee comes sterilized and the straw soaking it pasteurized that. Spoon should be clean, but I'm not the best at sterile environments
@@HomesteadinHawaii thank you
Why is sterilization so important?
Just to ensure there are no other strains of Mycelium already present. You can do without but you should still soak the straw to ensure it is fully moist.
Makes no sense. Sterilize spoon and bucket only to use hands anyway
True, I’m not the best with sterilization, but hey! It still worked
Do oyster mushrooms even exist in Hawaii? Is it a good idea introducing super strong cultivated oyster spores to an island environment?
Good point. Hawaii State Dept of Ag actually has pretty strict controls on what mushroom spawn can be imported. Iʻm assuming they studied the matter.
