- How to make your 3x3 DD Tarp into a Tent-like shelter!
Sorry for taking so long to get round to doing this, those who have asked to see a how to.
After a bit of practice setting this up only takes a few minutes!
Best demonstration of this setup that I've seen yet. Really cleared up a few issues I was having. Thanks!
Been climbing and wild camping in Scotland for over 30 years. Mountains/tents are my thing but in lockdown I’ve had to revert to stealth.....e.g Tarp. This video as an instructional video remains the best I’ve seen to date. ATB fella 👍👍👍 all the best from North of the wall
Thank you dude! Can't wait til I can head up north of the wall again!
Luv the vid! Just wanted to add to this. On the second set up, after you stake out the back, you could then remove the trekking pole. Take it to the outside of the back and with one more piece of cordage, connect back to tarp and tie off. This would then be putting the standing point outside and giving you a little more free space within the tarp. Just another option for an already great design. Thank you for sharing.
Very clear demonstration of how to do this. I've been watching a few videos of how to set up the 3 x 3 tarp like this and this is the clearest so far. Maybe I'm ready to go out in the garden and try now....
That's possibly the best tarp setup I've ever seen!
Thank you kindly!
I can't wait for my 10' x 10' tarp to come in the mail so I too can start practicing Tarp Tents! Great video and most likley will have it playing on my phone so I can fallow along.
Brilliant setup, just tried it out myself. First time I've felt the urge to camp in the backyard since I was a kid. Thanks for the video.
The backyard is a good place to practice tarp setups.
One of the easiest to understand videos I've seen on how to do these two setups. Thanks so much for the lesson!
You're most welcome!
Excellent HowTo !!! My mate is thinking about taking up camping again, and I really need to get him watching this one !! Really like the first setup more though, not sure why. Thanks to you and your pals for showing us this !!!
You've explained this far better than most of the other videos on this topic. Thanks for sharing, you've definitely earned another sub
beatbasher thank you!
I like seeing the different subtle mods that people add to this setup. Good Vid.
Pointer for this setup- Take two trek pole joined together and placed in the A-frame entrance and stake straight out from entrance. This option allows for unobstructed interior and, also, gives option to place a full spread out ground cover.
Congratulations, it seems so simple that I'm going to try this now but only after taking a look at your others videos… Thank you very much ;)
Thank you very much! I hope you found it easy setting it up!
so many people are setting this up loosely, having me think i was gonna be unable to do it... after wathching your video i feel confident ill get a tight pitch , like you
Excellent step-by-step setup; just what I've been looking for. Now I need to get out & practice what I've just learned. I've just subscribed & rang the notification bell.
Thanks! This channel has been dormant now for some time, but I am looking to change that, so that bell ring is worth it!
@@SilvaWolf Please consider including the length of the center pole in inches & centimeters for those of us who don't have/use trekking poles & would be cutting poles/staffs to length from nearby tree/fallenlogs, whatever. I saw somewhere a person inscribing a black marker index point on the tent fabric that could be used as an accurate measurement for future use.
Brilliant video, I'm asking Santa for one of these for Christmas.
I hope you get one then! All the best, thanks for watching!
Excellent set up there mate - I have this tarp and prefer to a tent
This is a good idea for another way to make a shelter with a tarp , if I was using this in the woods I wouldn't take walking poles or pegs with me , I would hang it from a branch or make my own poles 'n' pegs . Thanks for posting
aye sure thing! I rarely make my own pegs, i'm lazy, haha
Mate you are a GENIUS. I just used these instructions and I built an amazing shelter. Never again with a tent! Thank you :)
Thank you Fabio, Glad you found the video helpful! Enjoy your tarp camping!
Excellent video. You're a legend!
I think I'll get one for myself. I saw this tarp at a local store, but wasn't sure whether to buy it or not. After your video I have no more doubts. Thanks.
Really well explained. Great tarp tent setups I am glad you posted the tutorials. Cheers!
These tarps are so versatile! The only limit is your imagination! This is brilliant...I bought the 3 X 3 tarp its quality
They sure are! I am very glad I have mine that's for sure! Thanks for watching!
Very nice, sir. Really like the 2nd set-up.
Great set up,will have to try them with my DD 3x3 and 4x4 Tarps :o) will share this to our bushcraft group
I would love to see what size a 4x4 one would come out at!
That is so awesome!! Was shopping for a tent but sod that I've just ordered one of these, nice work man!
Really nicely explained and very clear to see the different versions. Thanks.
Just got a DD 3x3 and a set of dd walking poles CAN'T wait to get out there and use them 😎👍🎣
Thanks a lot there Alan for such high praise. Not a problem, I am glad you have found this video useful. All the best. Dan.
I really do like the 3x3 tarp tent setup. I’ve tried like your demonstration and also with the shorter pole on the outside - which provides a bit more room. Thanks for sharing. 👍
By far the BEST vid on this! Thank you!.
Thank you very much! :D
Nice! I had someone break into my VW Beetle stealing all my camping gear. I have a VERY LARGE 16X16 foot tarp and this is a great setup! Ill have to try this out, thanks for the great instructions.
with a tarp like that youd end up with a small Teepee! That'd be great! Sorry to hear your gear got robbed, the scumbags! I hope you have little trouble replacing it.
That's excellently done! I've seen tons of tarp shelter videos but they rarely show it in such nice easy steps for a novice like myself! When I get my DD 3x3, I'll DEFFO be following this setup for sure! Thanks for posting it, top stuff! :-)
that is the best too set ups ive ever seen, going to go and try them. thank you
Thank you! I also have a fully enclosed set up on my channel
Sweet! Just ordered my DD 3x3 from self reliance outfitters. Can't wait! Thanks for sharing!!
I like the way you taught. Gonna do this on next trip at beach. Me from Pakistan.. Good luck man
Cool video Dan in my opinion one of the better instructional vids. Thanks very much for your time and effort. Be lucky and be safe.
That was a brilliant video, I'm so glad I found it, keep up the great work 👍
Good clear instruction mate, well done. At the Bushcraft show, you did a demo of a completely enclosed shelter, it may have been with a 3 x 4.5 tarp. Can't remember. A video of that would be good. Nice one pal, keep em coming.
Hey bud, I have it on my channel mate, Enclosed Tarp tent with DD 3x3 Tarp
Still two of the best DD setups in my opinion!
Excellent video Danny very easy to follow.....i'm really glad you put this up,cause i'm going to try that with my 4.5 x 3.
Great video watched this last week and my new DD tarp came in the mail today. Going out for a 2-3 day hike next week. Going to be using it with my USMC Gore tex bivy instead of a ground tarp. Super excited. Will try to get a video on here next week.
Sounds great! Wish I could join you! I look forward to your video. All the best, Dan
Nicest video ive seen on this type of setup on this tarp. Thanks you 👍👍👍
Thanks man that does help. That makes it a 10 ft by 10rt tarp here, and thats what I've been looking at getting cause you can do so much with it. Great chanel, take care man!
Wonderful video, brilliant idea, very practicable - great.
I have bought a DD3x3 and will practice these wonderful idea as soon as possible.
Thanks a lot!
Thanks a lot! Have fun with these! enjoy your tarp, I can't rate them high enough.
Love your DD tarp posts man! I found about DD watching your stuff and recently bought a 3 x 3. Going to try your setups when I hit up the Juan de Fuca trail in BC this summer! Top shelf!
Hey up Nick, sorry YT seems to hide a lot of comments! Thanks for the kind words mate. You won;t be disappointed with that tarp man, enjoy your trail, Love a good hike me!
A very nice presentation! Been looking for a ground camping backup to my hammock. Thanks for posting!
Having just bought a DD 3x3 tarp I'm looking forward to trying out these set ups.Cheers
No worries! hope you get on well with it!
This is a game changer. Perfecto 👌
Thank you brother!
Great video and very well explained. Thanks for sharing the knowledge! 👍
Looks like an awesome setup 👍
Great Tips and detail mate! Well done.
Thanks for your kind words, all the best!
Really enjoyed your video and tarp tent.
Hey there. No worries! the tarp weighs about 800g and a bigger tarp can definitely be used the same way, and will get more people in there too. I agree with you. my skill set would not be where it is now if it was not for this online community of video bloggers. All the best from England!
Two excellent setups. Il have to try these
Best vid to build at tent with a DD Tarp, nice mate. Brilliant !!! Greetings from germany
Thank you for your kind words! best wishes to you!
Stellar! This is a propper tarp setup vid. Except for one thing.... Would have liked to see how to shut the front door.... Thanks for sharing!!
nice video very well demonstrated, looks like a great way to set up a tarp going to try this next time im out
Wow thank you that was a brilliant tutorial I was considering a polish lavvu but after watching that i will get far more room in a tarp
Great job Danny! I really like these sorts of shelter mate, just makes that tarp that extra bit adaptable and useful. I have another version inspired by a recent SgtFruitcake video that I want to try out for in the woods and where you have some anchor points available. This is also a great shelter for winter time too. Cheers and all the best!
Absolutely, one of the finest videos I've ever seen. Great job, my man. Tyvm.
Thanks very much for watching Jerry! Best wishes! Dan
Great vid mate :) just ordered the same tarp and can't wait to use it and try these set ups. Thanks
Glad to hear it, thank you! Have fun with it mate. All the best
Thanks because of you I just brought a 3x3 tarp nice one cheers.
Glad this worked for you! Nothing wrong with sharing it with a bike, they don't snore!
Well done! I'll be using your configuration on my motorcycle trip this summer.
sounds brilliant! Have a good time man!
Great video, nice clear and detailed instruction, really glad I found it and subbed. That's my weekend sorted, a bit of garden tarpology!
Cheers
Nige.
Thank you! I hope the weather is nice for you. I have another tarp setup to video tomorrow ;)
Brilliant!! Now, just need to find my Walking Poles!
Thinking on this - the first set-up (single pole) could be accomplished using a single canoe paddle (single blade, of course!).
you made me become a tarp fan by seeing this ;)
Awesome setup! Thanks so much!
Nice one Danny i was thinking about getting a tent but not sure now.
May have saved some cash yeh!
just discovered your channel its great thanks so much for all this information!
This is a great setup and the 2nd is tall enough to cook inside too.
Nice video, thanks for sharing! In the second setup is there a reason you have placed the second pole inside instead of outside with a guy from the tie off point around the pole and down to a peg? It would get the pole out of the way if you did that instead.
Absolutely brilliant i'm gonna try this
Thanks ... really good video .... I like setup two a lot more !
I just bought an 'Oware 9'x9' sil-nylon tarp. I hope to do a first pitch in the next day or two, and just might give this a shot. One suggestion--with that last pole that you put inside--why don't you put it outside at the back instead, and secure it with one line to a tie out loop, and another line to the ground. That way you don't lose space having the pole in the way inside. But, I really like this pitch. I also plan to use line runners which make for easy line length adjustments, and a clip on each line to quickly attach to whatever tie out I need to use.
Nice variation on the second way 👍
Definitely ok. Tried it in the garden with a Gel stove. Works like a charm :-)
Good stuff, just in time too, I'm planning leave my tent at home and use my tarp this weekend in the mountains.
Good on ya, that's a great set up, will have to try that one , thanks for a great lesson and video.....keep up the good work....happy days to you and yours :)
thank you for watching, I'm glad you found it useful!
Brilliant, thanks very much mate 👍
Excellent video, just need to sew a few more loops on my Terra Nova tarp and then i'm off to pitch it like this :-) thanks for the tips
Brilliant ! Thank you for the excellent video. Will give it a try.
No problem, thanks for watching!
Thanks Ken. Have a good week buddy.
This bloody bloody excellent!
if the tarp is longer you could fold it in half and have a floor for sleeping on, I think it will work. great vidio
Yea I think you could do that for sure. I actually bring along a 1.7mx1m groundsheet for just that purpose
Great video, simple and clear instructions. Have subscribed. Thanks
Great video Dan enjoyed watching and looking forward to trying this out at the weekend ;)
Super video Danny! good job
Nick
not if you camp sensibly, but even in areas where ground water flow is an issue you can always score a channel around the base of the shelter to direct water away. only water that is of concern is what comes through the door, so I sleep away from it in bad weather. Hope that helps.
Brilliant video! A model of how "How-to" type videos should be done, with excellent camerawork, and a very assured commentary indeed. (Only thing I could fault was some of the spelling.)
Clear, concise. Subbed.
Thanks a lot Dave!
Nicely done, I love it! Thanks!!!
Well I was taking my Child camping in a tent with a tarp to give some under cover space outside. Look at what you've done here I think the tent is not needed. Thanks for the good instructions.
No worries! I hope you enjoy your time out with the little one!
Saw this, bought a tarp (the awsome ultralight one) ! Thanks for making my pack way lighter.
GREAT VID. Same for 4x4 or would you need a different pole, rather than walking pole?
A larger pole scales a 4x4 better than a walking pole. A walking pole works, but the entrance ends up low to the ground
That's a damn good idea that, I will have to give it a go! Thanks buddy, appreciate that! All the best, Dan.
Nice ! I really want a DD tarp now
Very explicit video. Thank you for that. Any chance you mention how much does this 3x3 tarp weights? I know this is relative to the type of material you use, but just to give an idea. I want to experiment with the tarp sizes in order to be able to achieve this two configurations making it comfortable for one person. Once again, Thank you very much for sharing, long live RUclips and the international connections this provides us with. All the best from Chile
Great easy explanation
To be honest I have not tried using a mossie net. I imagine one of the pyramid shaped types would work if you wedge it between the walking pole and your tarp though. if you do try it, please let me know, I'd like to hear how it went. All the best! Dan.
Nice one Danny, Very well explained mate! ..Tony.
