  • We place some poultry netting over our chicken run to keep our chickens safe from aerial predators. We have had a horned owl and a falcon try to attack our rooster and this will keep him and all the chickens safe.

    Put two fluid ounces of apple cider per gallon of water for 6 days a week throughout the molting season and watch their feathers come out long beautiful and strong and it helps relieve the pain of their feathers coming out and their new feathers become shiny too.

    When you cut the top extra parts off the 4x4 post of the coop a while back, I was like, Ohhh you are going to wish you had left that extra part on top! I had to put two layers of netting on top of a ring neck pheasant run because owls and red tail hawks would catch them through the netting when the pheasants would freak out and fly into the net. Owls were worst, they would pull and partially eat em then drop em and get another one to spook and catch em so easily too! Three feet or more the better of spread between the nets worked best because they flex so much and the owls were so good at catching em.

      Ha yup hind sight is 20/20. We had a hawk problem at the beginning of spring but they seem to have moved on after the temps warmed up. Gunner is a great guard dog for the chickens. If he’s inside and hears something messing with the chickens he lets us no right away. Even though Rocket the rooster is a pain in the butt he’s also saved the entire flock from a bear and other predators.

    I only did netting in the Winter a few times in central Alaska....The snow always weighted it down..and -30 on down if it moved would snap it...good luck...
    Getting meat birds 🐦..I just don't see any chicken killing going on in the future at your place..lol....but if you do..try Cornish X's..for 8 -10 weeks...I use to do about 600 a year..raising from 50 to hundred at a time...for a local butcher in North Pole..always go white on meat birds..they are bred for easy butchering...once you eat a chicken you raised..you won't be able to eat store bought chicken again..it is that good.
    You should try doing chukars and wild turkeys..they are a lot of fun..and guinea fowl and pheasants...
    Really great pets are geese they will follow you around all day...just make sure you get the right breed for your life style.
    Also if you don't want to winter birds...you can get flying mallard ducks and Canadian geese..

    • @redwood9741
      @redwood9741 4 года назад

      @@AnAlaskaHomestead lol..dual purpose..is polite way to say heavy stewing hen..yuck.
      Cornish X's..eat , drink and shit and are happy with that.....Cornish X's give you the excuse to butcher earily before any one gets feeling for them..because they aren't bred to live long and their weight will give them leg problems the longer you feed them...
      If you could butcher one of your hens tomorrow..then your good and don't listen to my advice...but if you want good guilt-free food
      ...then you might think about it a little more...or not..lol..either way I have my popcorn out..waiting..lol
