As beautiful as they are on the outside, the love they have for each other is just as beautiful. Stephanie and Tyler met in high school almost 10 years ago and have been nearly inseparable ever since. Tyler's incredible athletic abilities in baseball led him to being drafted to the major leagues by the New York Yankees and then by the Minnesota Twins. Traveling all over the country is challenging for any relationship, but these two made it work. Stephanie travels to every city with Tyler and is his biggest fan. @karen It's good that you recognized it was toxic. Did you two ever have serious conversations about what's going wrong and how you two feel? Communication is the cornerstone of a lasting relationship. My and my husband's relationship was extremely toxic the first few years of dating. Many heated arguments. There were many times where I questioned being with him. But I knew, deep in my heart, that he deserved the chance to find himself. He was raised in an abusive household, so all he knew growing up was chaos, anger, and dysfunction. He never got to heal from it, so all of his pent up anger and frustration came out in our arguments. I had faith in him and knew that with some inner work, he could begin to heal. And he was willing (though terrified) to change. That solidified it for me. It was only recently that he had a major breakthrough and is now more himself than ever before. We still have a ways to go, but he's made so much progress. And our love has never been deeper.
Relationships take time, effort, courage, self reflection, and patience. Your lover WILL mirror your insecurities, flaws, issues, and mindset. That fact alone pushes people away from relationships. People don't like when the side of themselves they don't like is displayed for them to see on a constant basis. Relationships are really about learning about yourself and how to be a more authentic version of you. Two people help each other in bringing that out. That is what a true, loving, long lasting relationship is.
If you two are still on good terms, perhaps talk about what happened. You don't have to get back together, of course. But, as I said, relationships are about self reflection, so it would be great for both of you to get some insight on where things went awry and how that can be changed, if necessary, so that the past doesn't repeat.

If the relationship truly was toxic, leave it. Never look back. If it was just a rocky time for the both of you, reconsider.

karen I’m glad you recognize that there is toxicity. That can come in many different forms. Your safety is the most important. Also consider if you were to have a baby at some time (whether planned or unplanned) how that might go. It’s important that there is no physical abuse when toxicity is a factor, and if there is, it doesn’t ever necessarily improve (or it shouldn’t be assumed it will anyway.) With that out of the way, there are a lot of other forms of toxicity. I haven’t experienced toxicity, but have been in a relationship for awhile (definitely listen to those who went through it primarily.) Ask yourself these questions: 1. Has he gotten more toxic that he was or is he just feeling comfortable enough to show it? 2. Does he act this way to others or just you? 3. Do I feel safe with him? 4. Is he willing to change and if so would he be open to couples counseling (I think this would be important to help align your focus’ and differences and someone who is 3rd party and knows you both can offer safe, professional advice, knowing the scenario and then help you with future milestones.)? 5. What has he wanted or appreciated about you the most and vice versa? 6. How much of this is the way he was raised and is there family bitterness that could be resolved? 7. Is our faith/belief system similar/could we go to church together? 8. Do I know who I am as an individual whether he is with me or not? 9. Are there certain triggers he has that I should be aware of? If so, why are they triggers and can they be resolved? 10. Am I trying to fix him or is this a relationship I really want? (Trying to help people is wonderful, but can also be done as friends. Don’t feel like you need to be dating him to help him (even if he says that.) Now with all of that said, the questions are just ones I came up with for you to ask yourself or talk to someone who knows you about. They aren’t intended to be answered here. Second of all, I don’t know you and my advice comes only from wanting to help someone who’s struggling in the comments, , so don’t take it as or over professional advice. Know that none of the things I said is in ANY way judging you. You are in a tough scenario and I respect you asking for help. I will be praying for strength and guidance for you, Karen. May God bless you with a clear mind for hard decision making. Remember it’s okay to be single and it’s okay to be working through something hard. Stay close to those friends, family members, teachers, etc who will support. Much love!💕

I’ve been where you are. I met my high school boyfriend when we were only 13 and we started dating when we were 15 until almost 20. We both grew into different people. He became unhinged. He was very mentally ill and at that time I couldn’t help him. 10 years later, we both turned 30. Unfortunately he took his life 2 weeks ago. I can’t tell you how heartbroken I am. I’m sorry to be so negative, but reading this brings back some of the happier times when I knew him. Being confused is the hardest thing to feel. I feel the same, even now. Yeah because a lot of, If not most, high school sweethearts that end up marrying and having kids later grow up and later realise they’re not as compatible as grown ups & want different things. All they know is being with that one person, so when they’re adults and temptation comes along they often times give in because they want something different, new & exciting.

Everyone’s relationship is different and paced differently, especially for us kiddos who were extremely lost in high school and our focus wasn’t where it should be. Mine wasn’t, which in turn created a toxic relationship with my “high school sweetheart.” Two years of toxicity, until right after high school. Until the person I’m with now stepped in and wanted nothing more than to be there alongside with me while I grow into the woman I want to be. Funny enough he went through the same thing I did, down to the toxic “high school sweetheart” experience, and lost/confused sense of self. We’re now independent and healthy individually, in turn creating the healthiest relationship I’ve been in.
He once said to me, “I wish we met years ago.” I told him I’m glad we didn’t, I don’t know if I would’ve loved who he was years ago, and vice versa. Everything we’ve gone through lead us to each other for a reason, it’s like finally finding land after being lost in the ocean, now we’re building our boat to sail the world 🌎.
Hell, I just watched him leave for work not long ago, everyday being with him is so new and fresh no matter what. I miss him already❤️

I thought I had a high school sweetheart but it didn’t turn out that way.... BUT I’m so thankful to have met my college sweetheart, because of him, we grew together into understand more into the adulthood life. I transferred to a CSU after I finished my community college with an AA, and my gosh , he could have been the type of controlling boyfriend to not allow me to go to a far school or break up with me because it “wouldn’t work” but he proved me wrong. Even though we hardly see each other with my work and school in the way , I’m forever grateful to have such a patient and loving boyfriend because at the end of the day, he is my support system cheering me on for my education and I love him for that.

He’s one of the rare ones that respect women, understand what “no” means, and is actually a nice guy, not the Nice guy™️ that calls you a bitch after you reject him. For anyone seeing this I want you to remember to always do what makes YOU happy. As much as I love the thought of being with a high school sweet heart forever it’s sadly not always gonna work out. If I was still with my high school sweetheart I’d be miserable but I know that’s not the case for everyone. Just from personal experience, I thought I was gonna marry my high school sweet heart and that’s why I was so scared to leave because he was my first for everything. I eventually realized I was only with him because I felt like I had be or I was expected to be. He never did anything terrible to me or anything like that I just eventually felt like he wasn’t the one for me. Your happiness comes first always.
And here I am with one more year of highschool left and with 0 boyfriends 🤷♀️
