While I feel that this fell short of the original Metal Gear (MSX2), it could be nearly as good with a few changes: 1. Removal of sidescrolling sections - I can see what they were trying to do here, but they're designed poorly for the most part. It was the first time that sidescrolling stealth had been tried and it shows. Replace them with a single transition room. Alternatively improve them. 2. Re-balance bosses - First boss should do less damage, as should fake John Turner. Tank should give a warning before it starts to move. Checkpoint just before all bosses. 3. Searchlights at the beginning do not appear where you enter the screen. Removal of flying guards in first few screens. 4. Make the platforming sections (where you move between floating platforms) easier. Instant death isn't fun. 5. Cable car guards give more warning for when they look out the window. 6. Doors open automatically if you have the correct card (no need to go into menu to select card). Also a problem in Metal Gear 1. 7. Replace section where you cause multiple alerts by blowing up walls with section where you blow up one wall and cause a continuous alert you must fight through (similar to Metal Gear 1). It would be great if a hack that remedied these issues was made.

Ohhhhh my God!!!this was my all thine favorite game growing up!!!best graphics, music, story, story twist,equipment,sounds,......a master piece.....should go down as one of the greatest games in history!!!!!
Wait, Kojima likes it??? So, why'd he go on to make Solid Snake then? I read he hated this installment and made Solid Snake as a way to show how the Metal Gear saga *should* continue.
I´m pretty sure Snake and J.T.'s pictures were swapped in the manual! And let´s not forget Snake is "a black belt in 32 different martial arts" and "a mixture of Rambo, James Bond, John Wayne and Lawrence of Arabia" Nick Myers went to Harvard and his nickname is "La Bomba" Jennifer is related to Ginger from Gilligan´s Island The main baddie, "Higharolla Kockamamie" (a lame pun on Ayatollah Jomenei) wants to unleash his "Ultra Sheik Nuclear Attack Tank" Those manuals always made me laugh XD
Funny to see how different a Metal Gear sequel looks when there's apparently more focus on refining what the previous game had instead of innovation. Though Snake's Revenge didn't get as popular as Metal Gear 2 (understandably) I can't help but think the makers of this game atleast tried their darnest and truly gave a shit.
This game literally is the reason why Metal Gear became a series. Before this Kojima planned for metal gear to be a one game only but after hearing about this game being made he then decided to make MG2: Solid Snake
Well, the ending was disappointing, but it's still one of my favorite games from back on the NES. Even now I'm surprised at the amount of detail that went into this game. The music, the effects, graphics, story, and gameplay are at the high end of the 8-bit spectrum, and really pushed the NES to its limits.
I think the amount of hatred and lies that Snake's Revenge gets because Hideo Kojima had nothing to do with it is criminal. While I know that it's non-canon, hard as fuck, and some things about the game could have been done better, I still like it. I do like the fact that you get to change locations a lot throughout this game compared to being stuck on isolated fortresses in the canon MG games made up to MGS2. I would dare say I had an easier time playing this than I ever had playing NES MG1.
+Loader2K1 I agree. Hell Kojima himself has said on numerous occasions that it was a good game and that it was faithful to the Metal Gear concept. Yet, people still shit on this game because it's not done by Kojima, of course the only good Metal Gear games are done by Kojima so Portable Ops is out as well because Kojima was busy with MGS 4 at the time. It pisses me the fuck off. I have had this game since it was new, just like the NES Metal Gear. These 2 games made me a Metal Gear fan to begin with. It doesn't deserve the hate that it gets. Snake's Revenge is way better than Metal Gear on the NES or even the MSX2 version in my opinion.
CF-105 Games I'm actually shocked to hear that somebody out there thinks Snake's Revenge is better than even the original MSX version of Metal Gear. Most MG fans would call that sacrilege, but to each his/her own. If it were up to me, SR would have gotten an updated re-release on the Game Boy Advance and/or DS in the 2000s.
Loader2K1 Good because I am not like every MG fan. Most of the fanbase never even came along until MGS at earliest. I can at least say I was following it much, much earlier. I am also not prudish either. Snake's Revenge despite some of it's faults IS better than the original Metal Gear. The AI is far superior for starers, the gameplay is more balanced in my opinion as well. But again this is opinion. Do I think Snake's Revenge can hold a candle to the real sequel, fuck no not even close. I am surprised that never got released here for some odd reason despite Metal Gear and Snake's Revenge doing quite well in sales back in those days. It would have been a no brainer but hey what can you do.
+CF-105 Games: I have to admit that I didn't really become a fan of the Metal Gear franchise myself until Metal Gear Solid was released on the PlayStation back in 1998. I played the original MG1 on NES when I was very young, but I didn't understand the game back then. It didn't help that I played it around some asshole kids who wouldn't help me with the game at the time, but that's another story. At the time, I thought playing as a soldier man with no weapons whatsoever save your fists while being in a jungle with little to no help was a dumb idea. However, MGS1 came out and changed all that for me. After enjoying the fuck out of MGS1, I decided to give NES MG1 a second chance and Snake's Revenge a chance. As far as SR is concerned, I seriously don't get where all the lies come from. "Snake's Revenge wasn't even made by Konami!" "All you do in the game is run 'n gun!" Completely false. One reason I can think of MG2: Solid Snake not getting a release outside of Japan (at least in the early to mid-'90s) was possibly because the game itself was very adult-oriented, and it was made at a time when the video game industry was still considered a market for grade-school children. Another possibility is that maybe Konami thought that even though NES MG1 and SR were more profitable in North America, they weren't overnight successes like some of their other series at the time, like Contra, Castlevania, and their licensed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games. I think MG2: SS is on higher plane of existence than SR myself, but I don't think SR is that terrible of a game.
Loader2K1 But Snake's Revenge is made by Konami. Ultra Games was a division of Konami created to get around the 5 game per year rule Nintendo had set up. Data East did it with Ocean, Acclaim did it with LJN. It was common practice in those days.
I've heard him mention that before and I know that the community as a whole seems to hate this game, but I am curious, why do YOU hate it? Not trolling... just curious.
I may have started playing MG on NES back in the 80's, but due to limited sources through a who you know basis, I can't recall where THIS Metal Gear fits into the story. This is about Big Boss? Venom? Solid?

Don't know if you know. When you get the bullet proof vest, it works in other ways. Gas rooms and equip it before you go into the side view stages and it will work under water too.
This is the game that made Hideo Kojima make a sequel if remember correctly as originally it was just gonna be the 1987 Msx Metal Gear . Until Konami made this death trap to the series behind kojima's back. Glad this happened cause in a way if Snake's revenge wasnt made then chances are we Wouldn't have the Metal Gear Solid series we know and love today so guess we should be thanking this game for giving the creator motivation of metal Gear 2 :solid snake and ongoing metal Gear Solid 5 tpp.
+Sonny Snake Yeah because this game is so shitty right. Oh but the creator of Metal Gear Hideo Kojima has even gone on record stating that it was a good game. But yep, we must fucking hate on it because Kojima wasn't involved.Just can't take it for what it is... nope it's shit right?
It's strange that Kojima would disown this game from the franchise considering how well it mimicked his style and how much he seemed to borrow from it later on. The first boss is a football team! How Kojima is that?
God this game was annoying back in the day. Hell it took me forever to get it done. But I beat it before metal gear one. Then years later I was told all I played was a lie and I cried.
I came here to see the final boss out of curiosity. Big Boss doesn't disappoint at all here. At least gameplay-wise, the boss looks awesome. Metal Gear series delivered the payoff before the build-up with the Big Boss. And Metal Gear 2 looks like a puzzle, but hey! At least you had a good fight before!

robby935 dude thats how I feel after beating any metal gear game,u feel like u just saved the world when you're done
This was one of the hardest games back in the early early 90s.
@@humpy1980 I agree, very challenging at the time, too, but, totally badass to play, anytime
Hm...Tanker, tanker getting blown off, guy betraying you, cyborgs, yep nothing like other metal gears.
Possibly the best music on a nes game. Though that was almost impossible to play. I never could defeat the first boss..
Metal Gear - Snakes Revenge is legendary with Spectacular graphics
A Spectacular classic and AMAZING game on the Nintendo 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Great game. Glad to see it has a fan base.
Even Kojima-kun said he liked this game, and people still bash it over dumb shit that isn't a big deal.
Ohhhhh my God!!!this was my all thine favorite game growing up!!!best graphics, music, story, story twist,equipment,sounds,......a master piece.....should go down as one of the greatest games in history!!!!!
Hey, this game isn't so bad. Sure, it's not the true MG sequel, but it's fun to play.
Plus, Hideo Kojima likes it. So that's good enough for me.
Wait, Kojima likes it??? So, why'd he go on to make Solid Snake then? I read he hated this installment and made Solid Snake as a way to show how the Metal Gear saga *should* continue.
@@ArynBendah A guy who worked on SR was on the very same train Kojima was on, and encouraged him to make the real sequel.
@@VahanNisanian ah, roger.
@@ArynBendah Kojima thought Snake's Revenge was pretty good. It was the original NES port of Metal Gear that Kojima hated.
@@mr.battle20 I had them mixed up thank you
this is the Venom Snake's Revenge?
I´m pretty sure Snake and J.T.'s pictures were swapped in the manual!
And let´s not forget Snake is "a black belt in 32 different martial arts" and "a mixture of Rambo, James Bond, John Wayne and Lawrence of Arabia"
Nick Myers went to Harvard and his nickname is "La Bomba"
Jennifer is related to Ginger from Gilligan´s Island
The main baddie, "Higharolla Kockamamie" (a lame pun on Ayatollah Jomenei) wants to unleash his "Ultra Sheik Nuclear Attack Tank"
Those manuals always made me laugh XD
And doesn't he rule over the land of "Ishkabibil?"
I enjoyed it🙂
Loved this game as a kid..Excellent soundtrack too!
There is something so nostalgic about THE NES music and sound effects.
Honestly... I liked this game a lot.
A lot of the hate this game gets is completely undeserved.
Larry the Gamer Guy I know right I liked this game too
This game literally is the reason why Metal Gear became a series. Before this Kojima planned for metal gear to be a one game only but after hearing about this game being made he then decided to make MG2: Solid Snake
Still a better Metal Gear game than Metal Gear Survive.
I'm currently playing the two MSX originals but Snake's Revenge looks awesome. Is it worth picking up for my NES collection?
I recommend it. It's tough though.
It's waay better than the first Nes MG.
"Powered Armor is for pussies." -Snake 1990
Excellent longplay! :)
Man the memories I was hella juiced as a kid when this came out
The music is the only reason I kept playing this game to the end
Well, at least this game had a Metal Gear
2:01:18 NO! That is *not* Solid Snake!
You're The Copycat:FAKE SNAKE!
holy shit I didn't even know that this existed, thanks Jag
The ship and the train levels are pretty cool.
You know you can use your knife to destroy that orange barricade, right? Don't have to necessarily use plastic explosives
Between that and Journey to Silius, I think they have some of the best NES music.
It reminds me a lot of my youth. I play it from time to time on the mini nes, or on my tablet with an emulator.
I am not John Turner. I am a spy. I am shocked.
Huge improvement from the first Metal Gear on NES
I think the amount of hatred and lies that Snake's Revenge gets because Hideo Kojima had nothing to do with it is criminal. While I know that it's non-canon, hard as fuck, and some things about the game could have been done better, I still like it. I do like the fact that you get to change locations a lot throughout this game compared to being stuck on isolated fortresses in the canon MG games made up to MGS2. I would dare say I had an easier time playing this than I ever had playing NES MG1.
+Loader2K1
I agree.
CF-105 Games
I'm actually shocked to hear that somebody out there thinks Snake's Revenge is better than even the original MSX version of Metal Gear. Most MG fans would call that sacrilege, but to each his/her own.
If it were up to me, SR would have gotten an updated re-release on the Game Boy Advance and/or DS in the 2000s.
Loader2K1
Good because I am not like every MG fan.
Loader2K1
But Snake's Revenge is made by Konami.
Not a Hideo Kojima game
I may have started playing MG on NES back in the 80's, but due to limited sources through a who you know basis, I can't recall where THIS Metal Gear fits into the story. This is about Big Boss? Venom? Solid?
Both of these nes games aren’t canon, play the MSX2 games.
The soundtrack to all nes mg games are fantastic. It's good shower tunes!
Snake’s Revenge was actually Part II of the NES version of Metal Gear
best metal gear games from 8 bits its a good story :D
+ Lucas Rodrigues its a 8bit game its good story for this platform. i meant today is grapics and story much bether and yea from start it vas konami who vas the operator for this game Some of the earlier games vas Ultra who vas the operator but almost all games vas from konami
+Lucas Rodrigues I gonna be honest to you. I dont speak english so i dont undestand what you mean, and if you are rude or something. And i'm not here to argue. I'm almost 40 years old and have played all consols from early 1980 and i stand upp to what i say before
this game can't be better than MG on MSX and MG2 on MSX
Don't know if you know. When you get the bullet proof vest, it works in other ways. Gas rooms and equip it before you go into the side view stages and it will work under water too.
so this game came right before Metal gear 2, Solid snake?
This is the game that made Hideo Kojima make a sequel if remember correctly as originally it was just gonna be the 1987 Msx Metal Gear . Until Konami made this death trap to the series behind kojima's back. Glad this happened cause in a way if Snake's revenge wasnt made then chances are we Wouldn't have the Metal Gear Solid series we know and love today so guess we should be thanking this game for giving the creator motivation of metal Gear 2 :solid snake and ongoing metal Gear Solid 5 tpp.
+Sonny Snake
Yeah because this game is so shitty right.
I'm pretty sure Kojima stated he actually enjoyed Snake's Revenge but also mentioned the NES version of MG1 is a piece of shit.
It's a Venom Snake move, that's for sure
A great game. But also among the most difficult released for the NES.
God this game was annoying back in the day. Hell it took me forever to get it done. But I beat it before metal gear one. Then years later I was told all I played was a lie and I cried.
I regret how much of my childhood was spent beating this game.
1:03 Damn, Snake is one ripped dude! Look at those biceps! 💪
Mgs Master Collection Vol.1
I came here to see the final boss out of curiosity. Big Boss doesn't disappoint at all here. At least gameplay-wise, the boss looks awesome. Metal Gear series delivered the payoff before the build-up with the Big Boss.
And Metal Gear 2 looks like a puzzle, but hey! At least you had a good fight before!
oh memories... I remeber when I finished this game... also the 1. I hope they remake this games soon.
Bruh I dig that Theme of Tara remix at 6:06
I like to think of this as a nightmare Solid Snake had after the events of Metal Gear 1 and before the events of Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake.
It wouldn't be, Kojima only made Solid Snake so Snake's Revenge wouldn't ruin his reputation like MG1 NES did.
1:10 Apparently Solid Snake was also an expert in taking a fuckton of steroids.
At least you actually blow up a Metal Gear in this unlike the NES port of the first game.
Good playing!
I wonder what the hell happened to Nick after he turned up missing and John after he made his last contact with Solid Snake
26:14 RIIIIIING....RIIIIING....."Hey Snake, Are you OK? I'll see you soon."....Yeah, I'm a little busy. Killing people left and right here. Could we maybe talk later? Kthxbye
Nick's last words are that Jennifer is a spy and then nothing happens?
I felt I was missing some codec calls, but after watching other playthroughs, it looks like I got nearly all of them (which is still almost nothing).
The only bad part is the jungle stage in the beginning. Once you get past that, then the game is actually very fun
nice music for a NES game
He likes it? I didn't know it!
But yeah, the ludicrous moments and the music make the game great and fun.
2:01:15
DON'T SMILE AT ME! YOU ARE NOT THE REAL SOLID SNAKE!!!
>:(
Looks like Christopher Walken
Tonight the part of Solid Snake will be played by Vin Diesel.
At least the Metal Gear is here.
Underrated music.
i like how snake's face breaks at the end.
Back when I was a kid, my friend had this and the original Metal Gear. For some reason I never liked this one bit, yet I remember spending countless hours working with MG. In retrospect, I don't understand what about this felt offputting, seems great now.
They are sister companies.
Back in the day, NES would only allow so many games made by one company to be licensed so to get around it they made Konami and Ultra.

Snake's Revenge, AKA Naked Gun 37 & 6/8ths
What if this Snake is actually Solidus hmm
I don't necessarily hate it but compared to the MSX sequel, this feels like a humurous parody as if Mel Brooks decided to make a video game featuring Metal Gear characters
This is just GUY from FINAL FIGHT running around punching things
I am a big Metal Gear Fan and.... i like this Game too. Its not a bad Game. For its like a Spin-Off. There are more bad Games out there... It has new Ideas but is still a stealth Game. All are rate this game bad cause its "BAD" and now on MG Rising everybody is again discussing an rating it bad. Real Fans love every Metal Gear Game... cheers
They are incredibly tough but this game had a lot to do with being prepared for fights.
Only problem is that I don't think they gave a prior warning about it coming up.
~JagOfTroy
This kinda feels like the original Metal Gear and the original Contra had a baby.
