Cheers for this, I have been researching "how do i start my lower body golf downswing?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Penamillorn Peerless Prevalence - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is a great exclusive product for discovering how to learn an effective golf swing method minus the normal expense. LOL! I appreciate that, @Bj Pickens! Unfortunately, such sorcery from the dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant....... Thanks for your support! Tom
I've been waiting for a lesson like this foreverrrr. As a left-handed person, who swings from the right side I have always been looking for what the right-hand does in the golf swing. And here it is. And to top it off, at the end, Tom even explained my situation.
Ditto. Its absolutely insane how much I pull left. chipping/putting wildly inconsistent. The tennis backhand example is great. Im too old to go lefty lefty, but I am going to start practicing one handed w the right. Makes complete sense.
I’ve been playing golf 35 years. I’ve had lots of PGA teacher lessons. Watched lots of videos. Listened you your suggestion. Went to the range and length and control is incredible using my dominate hand and arm. Just like hitting a tennis shot. THANK YOU!!
This has probably been the best informative video for me, I'm right handed dominant but I've played all sports with something you swing in a left orientated dominance I'm now going to train myself to play right handed
I'm glad you enjoyed this lesson video and I hope your transition goes well for you!! Now I find myself feeling the club and directing the club face to the ball. It certainly feels a lot better as I have now reduced the tension in my hands. Another great piece of advice from you which comes over in a very simple no-nonsense way. Thank you.
Thank you very much for this tip. I always had this question and you explained it perfectly. I've been paying golf right handed. I'm naturally left handed, but forced to do many things in school with my right hand. I need to focus more on my right arm. With your videos my handicap went this year from 20 to 14. Thank you Tom, you are the best!!!
@B. Blok, I truly appreciate your kind words and support, and I am very glad to know that you are enjoying and benefiting from my channel's lesson content!! Keep up the great work!! Tom
I have always been told to use the Left arm but I lack consistency. I switched to my dominant Right arm easily, concentrated on firing along the target line and wow ... so much more accuracy and distance instantly. I took it to the course and am back at my optimum !
Great advice. I am between left and right handed, but I can’t play left handed. I’ve been a left hand puller for years, resulting in severe problems in my left side upper back. Now started to really train my trailing right hand. The first times it was like I had no control at all with my right hand, but slowly I am getting more control. As a bonus I am starting to get a feel for the direction of the club blade.
Thanks Mr Saguto. First time I've come across this topic on RUclips. I've switched between arms over the years and come to the conclusion that dominant or natural hammer and nail arm is best. This video has just helped me reinforce my findings. Awesome stuff!!!
I never get tired to re-visit your channel for some older lessons which always offer some refreshing idea for purer ball striking on the course. Thank you Tom!

You have many fans out there to support you. What an achievement!
I had been thinking I was supposed to use my lead hand, I would pretty much take my right hand completely out of play, and I was playing terrible so I decided to change things up and I started feeling like I was kind of pushing the club through with my right hand and it’s feels so much better more distance and much better contact
This is dead on, bro! I walk to every tee box(and approach shot) swinging the club with my right hand only. This allows me to feel the club face, feel the "correct" wrist hinge, and feel the direction I need to swing the club(at the target, not at the ball). Not only can you control your club face left and right, you can also control high, and low. Everything falls in line with little effort, if you start playing golf with your dominant hand. Remember, the golf swing is basically throwing the club head towards the target. The ball just gets in the way.
BOOM!! You got it, Jamie!! I am perpetually befuddled by instruction that teaches golfers to all but completely take their dominant hand out of the swing. Wait. What? Really?? Thanks for sharing your dominant hand success - keep up the great work!! Tom
Thank you for this. Ive been taught (as a Righty Dominant) that my left hand needs to initiate the contact by pulling down. And I could never do this. Im a senior Golfer with a very weak left hand. I now need to learn how to use my dominate hand (right) correctly. What often happen when I feel that Right Domination I end up popping the Ball straight Up. I'd love to see a Video on how to correctly use the right hand. Love your videos..so descriptive/intuitive and easy!

Awesome advise and thank you Mr ! I have started to play golf about 7 months and all masters told me that i have to pull left hand to swing ( even im kinda righthand person ) and now since i saw your chanel, i can see my light
Nice video . Something struggled with my entire life trying figure which hand is dominant. I have found for myself what works is left arm back right hand smash.
Great video Tom! I have been struggling by adding my left side to the swing. All I needed to do was hit it naturally with my right side in which I am very dominant. I was one of those guys that was good at basketball but could never go left. It truly has simplified my golf swing from being technical to a natural power movement controlled by my right dominant side.

I'm right hand dominant, and I play baseball and cricket left handed. Golf is where it gets confusing, because like in tennis I play with right hand too.
Well, at least you've got that step-and-a-half advantage going to first base, though that probably won't help you much in golf. 😎 I eat and write left-handed, throw and golf right-handed, and switch hit in baseball. Not necessarily as confused as you, but not completely devoid of nuances.... Anyway, given your rather quirky ambidexterity, perhaps this episode on eye dominance may be of interest: ruclips.net/video/qwQfQiRcl70/видео.html Tom
Tom, this was timely, thanks for clearing up for me, a left hander playing right handed. No power and generaly swinging over the top (ugly). Yesterday I added more pressure to my right hand to get it more involved. Right away I noticed inside to outside swing with way more punch. Can't believe i've been playing 60 years. I think I can get rid of my old man irons, now. Never too old to learn in this game, right?
I am right hand dominant, but a left hand cricketer, left hand baseball player and left hand golfer. I have WAY more control and power using a LH swing. Also i am a right hand bowler/pitcher.
Thank you so much for this tip. This makes a lot of sense. I was always told to use my left arm even though I was right handed!! Awesome tip!! I’m a fan.
Thanks for the advice. After playing lefty for 25 years with a horrible slice, I'm making the switch to righty and hitting the ball dead straight. Not real far yet.

Tom, I’ve looked for a video on this for a very long time. My best golf was played many seasons ago with callouses on my right hand. I moved away from that and became left sided. Players should check for callouses on the right hand after a season. Great video. I’ve subscribed. Thanks again.
I had a golf lesson recently and the guy picked up right away that I was right handed when I started swinging. I play left because of hockey as a kid and he said I would benefit from switching over. I hit nowhere near as far as my friends and when he showed me the positions I needed to be in with the right hand position it was very hard to do with my left hand. I been practicing swinging right and although its hard to get the timing I do feel more powerful so I think this video really explains why its more important to play with your dominant hand as the trail hand. I think im gonna make the switch. Thanks!
It's an interesting scenario, but you're definitely not alone! Just ask Phil... You may benefit from switching, though it will likely feel very weird for a while. Only you can determine if that is what is best for you. Should you decide to continue playing left-handed, then short of saying that you need to train your trail hand to hit - which I realize may be difficult - I would recommend you work on maintaining your connections and allowing the lower body to bring you into impact. This Hogan video may help to give you a visual in this regard: ruclips.net/video/iejRWhuB7y8/видео.html. Also, even though this impact video lesson focuses on maintaining the angle between your trail arm and the club shaft, it may help you feel impact in a different way that prevents your dominant lead hand from getting out of control: ruclips.net/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/видео.html One of the keys in your current situation is to not allow that strong arm - which probably seems to have a mind of its own in anxiously wanting to take over when you're trying to bust one - to jump ahead of the lower body and throw the entire downswing out of sequence, because if it does you're likely taking regular trips to Pull-Slice City. If you can train it instead to trail the lower body to the point where the shaft is parallel to the ground on the way down, then you should be in position to hit hard with the dominant hand as if it were a tennis backhand shot or throwing a frisbee. Additionally, this is a members’ forum post by a student in my online school specific to this very issue: “I found a great tip in the Power Distance section. If you are a natural lefty that plays golf right-handed this is a breakthrough! Retract your lead shoulder during the downswing as hard as you retract your trail shoulder in the backswing. You will be amazed the speed you generate! It is also a very natural motion.” I hope this helps, and I really hope to see you soon in my online school, where thousands of folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom
I’m left handed in 2 handed stick sports and right handed for throwing, playing tennis. I don’t know how that came to be....anyway, you affirmed what I suspected and that was train my left arm to be dominant! I just wish I was a right hander to match everything else.
Anthony Willis I can “third” this statement. So you both are thinking of trying to train the left hand to be dominant, rather than move to a right handed swing?
Just found your video the other day and this confirms what I thought. Unfortunately, I am strongly right hand dominant, but I bat, play hockey (as many Canadians do) and golf left handed and this has been an issue for me as I've tried to increase my distance off the tee. Really have been working to quiet my right arm so that both my arms work together o/w I tend to pull over the top!! Thanks.
Buddha Tbay I do the same. Have you considered switching to right? For me, I would be stronger in the long run, but the left swinging motion feels more natural and controlled to me
@@devonpeters9458 61 years old...athletic abilities on down swing...sadly too late now to switch. Still, thanks to the power of the internet, I hitting farther as a result of better technique. Thanks for replying...much appreciated.
Been playing for many years and it’s only very recent that i’m using my dominant shoulder/arm/hand hitting the ball. The result is more distance and line is much better with consistency. it sore my left (lefty) shoulder for a few days though.
I'm very glad to learn of your improvement, Greg - nice job!! That sore shoulder is likely a result of using muscles that have not previously been active in your golf swing. If it continues then there's a high likelihood that there is an issue with the execution of the motion. I had been using in the past my right hand for power, speed and control, but it seems that my left hand (lead hand) becomes a drag or a baggage as it has no speed and power. So, in order that my left hand not become a drag or baggage, I apply also power and speed with it. Thus, both my hands become equally having power and speed, but the right side of my body would push both my arms for additional power.
I have no issues with that, @Imre Vince. I teach trail arm feels, lead arm feels, no arm feels, etc. It's whatever works best for each individual golfer. As I regularly tell folks, let your ball striking and shot shape be your guide! Tom

I’ve been a right hand dominant player since I was a kid. I took a lesson 3 years ago and he had me switch to left side dominant. Ruined my game. Went from 1.7 index to over 10. Lost all confidence in my game. I’m going back to right hand dominant. Thank you!

I started playing golf this year and as a lefty even tho i’m right handed because I also play this side for hockey and baseball. I’m also a high level tennis player and the position of the hand on the club is the same as the 2 hands backhand in tennis. That’s why at the moment I feel way more comfortable on this side and my weight transfert forward is also way better, more natural than the rightside. It’s also weird for me to have too hand on the right side because in tennis the forehand is with only one hand. The problem is that in tennis, all my finess shots come from my right hand so I’m way way better on the right side for putting and I think in the long run I can become way better around the green from the right side. I literally cannot think about putting on the left side because I struggle with my left hand and it’s poor. That’s why I don’t know what to do because even tho I’m righty, I have better power from the left side because of my backhand , but better touch with my right hand. I’m also right eye dominant and I have a better eye-hand coordination on the left side too( better contact). Btw, my forehand can be as powerful as my forehand but the two hands motion that makes me struggle. What should I do? At the moment I play on the left for all shots except for putting. Thank you very much for the help and I’m sorry for the English( I’m not a native English speaker haha) Great video, love it!
Wow - you've got a lot going on there between the right and left sides! It sounds to me like you'll be more natural and comfortable playing from the left side, especially since you play baseball and hockey that way. I would recommend you work on maintaining your connections and allowing the lower body to bring you into impact. This video may help to give you a visual in this regard: ruclips.net/video/iejRWhuB7y8/видео.html. Also, even though this other video lesson focuses on maintaining the angle between your trail arm and the club shaft, it may help you feel impact in a way that prevents your dominant lead hand from getting out of control: ruclips.net/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/видео.html One of the keys in your situation is to not allow that strong right arm - which probably seems to have a mind of its own in anxiously wanting to take over - to disconnect too soon, jump ahead of the lower body, and throw the entire downswing out of sequence. As for putting, there is absolutely no problem with hitting full shots from one side and putting from the other. If you wish to give putting from the left side a try, perhaps you can experiment with a cross-handed grip where your right hand is lower than the left and pulling the handle through. I hope this helps you in some way! Cheers! Tom
I am right handed but play golf with left handed clubs and, as a new golfer, shoot straight most shots. Practicing my swing the correct way from day one the right way has helped immensely. My dominant eye is my right eye which I think helps alot to be a lefty in golf. I struggled more being introduced at first to be a right handed golf club player, although I can shoot right as well with same distance. I think our terms for labelling left and right handed players should change to be more specific....like.... I'm a right handed left hand club player lol.
Phil Mickelson is a righty playing from the left side, and Ben Hogan says he was born left-handed but he played from the right side, so it seems as though you're in good company, Andrea!! Call it what you wish, as long as you're having fun out there!! Cheers! Tom
This all makes sense, but as a former hockey player whose dominant hand is his right one I still feel more comfortable playing lefty. I'll sometimes swing my buddy's right handed irons at the range and more often than not I hit it straight and clean but it just feels so awkward lol
Hey @sagutogolf I’ve watched two of your videos and they’re very cerebral. You don’t talk about the same common fixes or swing thoughts out there. Even though I’ve played 26 yrs of my life this video reminded me of my dominant hand and utilizing it.
I'm a lefty that plays lefty, but by this sense, I play righty, with left handed clubs. I have always pulled through. My consistency is slightly above terrible. I'm definitely excited to work with this. 🙏🏌️♂️
I tell people, “If I asked you to hit a stone (in a golfing direction) with a yardstick in ONE hand, which hand would you use?” I’m annoyed that I’ve played golf for 38 years trying to emulate Bobby Jones and his lead hand control (though I feel now that he actually controlled the shot with his right.) Like Hogan who said to release the rubber banded hips as the first move in transition, Bobby needed to think lead hand to prevent a demonically overpowering right. It’s just what they needed to feel or think for their own idiosyncrasies. Only 4 years ago I started to find dominant hand control teachers on the internet. I was surprised that guys like Cotton and Melhorn (who for the uninitiated, was according to Ben Hogan the best from tee to green,) were advocating dominant hand control from so long ago. Tom, do you know of teachers from the Vardon era and before who advocated this? I’m 65, a long time 5-7 handicapper who’s dropped to 3-4 over the past 4 years, and regained 20-30 yards on my drives, thanks to being able to apply the Hogan 3 right hands properly. Mike Austin: it’s not pulling, not pushing but throwing from the top. Thanks for the vid. Wish you were around to teach me when I was in my 20s.
I am so glad that you found this concept through your golfing life! Beautifully stated - think about how you play other sports and then understand WHY someone would have you hit with your non-dominant hand. There is no power in that hand. The dominant arm delivers an extremely devastating blow to the golf ball much like a punching motion. Very powerful - gave me 15 - 20 more yards instantly. When you brought up Hogan's 3 right hands, it's easy to see why you would want an infinite amount of them at impact. There is so much power there! Thank you for your awesome comment!
If you can easily pull/tow a trailer at highway speeds why can't you push a trailer the same way. Hogan's swing didn't push until the very end of his swing. Swing a hammer? You are actually pulling the hammer. Trying to push will never ring the bell at a carnival.
@cz1mmt. Because the golf swing is very much like a baseball swing. No quality power hitter in baseball generates the bulk of their power by pulling the bat with their lead weaker hand and arm. None of them! Their power comes from their lower body transition to the front leg and their pushing the bat through the strike zone with their dominant trailing hand and arm. Same primary motion is how any good hockey player generates power with their wrist or slap shot. The dominant trailing hand is pushing the stick from the trailing side of the stick handle. They are not generating the bulk of their power by pulling the stick handle with their leading weaker hand/arm! Ask any baseball player if they had to hit a ball as far as they could and could only use one hand to hold the bat and swing would they use their trailing dominant hand and arm or their lead weaker hand and arm and you will not find a single one of them that will choose to hold the bat with their lead weaker hand in such a challenge by trying to pull the bat through the strike zone with their leading weaker hand/arm. They will all choose to use their dominant trailing hand to push the bat through the strike zone by applying pushing pressure from the trailing side of the bay’s handle. Same exact principle applies to the golf swing.. Sagutto is correct, and you are simply dead wrong. And as far as a hammer goes if you are holding a hammer correctly with the head facing away from you, you are most certainly NOT pulling the handle as you claim! What you are doing is pushing the handle from behind to move the head through the air. No one pulls the handle of a hammer to drive a nail. No one that is sane that is! A hammer’s handle is pushed because your hand is putting the bulk of its pressure on the hammer’s handle from behind during a nailing motion. It is pure pushing motion from behind being applied to the handle. It is NOT a pulling motion! To be a pulling motion your hand would have to be gripping the hammer’s handle from the front head side of the handle, which would be both 180 degrees backwards, completely non- ergonomic, and completely stupid! That is the only hand position from which you could even try to pull a hammer’s handle to attempt to hammer a nail into anything dummy. And no respectable or sane carpenter would do that, but apparently you might. LOL 😃
When i started playing golf i was told as a right handed golfer the lead arm which is the left arm should be the power source and should be dominant in every aspect while the right arm just go along the ride of the swing and needs to be turn off.. Sure i got better with that in mind but never seems to get that umph crispy kfc power shot or accuracy.. Then my old man told me to use my smart hand like how to hit a nail with a hammer like in this video and when i tried it boy i was so wrong all this time lol Hitting with my right hand which is clearly my smart hand now gives me much more power, consistency and accuracy..
Kudos to your dad for imparting that wisdom upon you! Isn't it crazy how we're told - in just this one sport - to not use the arm that we use for everything else in life?? Unfortunately, such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant....... 😎 So yes - keep up the great work, deploy that dominant trail arm properly, and enjoy the resulting ball striking bliss!! TS
I may be wrong but isn’t Johnny Miller dominant left hand and he was arguably one of the best iron players ever. I would give up power for ball striking consistency.
Fantastic! We're all unique, and no matter how many videos of top players we might watch we must each ultimately figure out how to take personal ownership of our swing in order for it work consistently. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!! Tom
Been golfing basically 30 years I'm 41 now. And I still, still, fighting the slice and questioning my entire swing. Tried a number of different swings or setups. Right hand dominant all the way. Play hockey left handed though, like I would never play it right, but everything else right hand dominant. And chipping putting all feels good right. Just assumed play golf right from young right away because well, that's what you do. I dunno. Maybe should have been golfing left my whole life because from my right it just feels like the right wants to take over and I come over the top (and all the other dreaded symptoms associated). I guess what I'm saying is if I golf left handed and use the right hand as pendulum control the club feel like I would generate more power no? (lack of power another issue that has always plagued me). I am not sure about accuracy I feel I would really have to work on that and commit but maybe this swing motion would be better for golf in the end.
My right hand is my dominate one. But I started playing golf like hockey with my left hand because I have more control. But unfortunately I have a old but tough injuri in my right knee. So I am either forced to switch to the right handed side or i am ending my golf story before it really begins. I started playing golf last year and brang down my hcp from 54 to 28, but now my knee stops my enthusiasm very quickly I dont know if I am able to change with the age of 57 ?
I appreciate your comment and understand your challenges. In response please allow me to put it this way: This is a very body-friendly motion as supported by the fact that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. Have you looked into the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. And here's a link to my free mini-course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” if you’re interested in checking it out: go.saguto.golf/ You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. I hope you'll give the school some thought so we can get you on a path towards truly enjoying this greatest of games in a way that does not put additional strain on your body. Thanks again for your message, Tom
Do everything with my right hand but I chose left cause I played hockey left. Well, 4 years in I simply cannot be consistent even with stack and tilt. I always want to pull over the top and fade. My whole alignment just wants to be wrong. But when I tried right handed I automatically hit a draw, I'm switching!
I come OTT if I hit with my dominant (right) hand. As this is just the biggest no-no, I feel as if I must swing with the left arm to stay on plane. I probably lose power, but all I can say is that when I do put the right arm into the swing, it doesn't go any further.
If you are OTT you are losing power because the shaft is steep. The right arm controls the shaft angle in the downswing too. Your mileage may vary depending on your swing and the way you think about hitting. You hit hard with your dominant hand using a hammer and it has tons of power. Try shallowing the shaft and hitting hard with the right arm.
This is opposite from what I was taught which was to take my dominant right hand out of the swing. That never made sense to me but it was in line with golf is a a game of opposites - swing down to make the ball go up etc.
Thanks for the video! Finally someone said it. I see right handed golfers everywhere using their left back hand for power. It seems like a widely accepted quirk of the game. Does not make any sense. If you’re right handed. Swing with your right hand. Duh
Unfortunately, Leo, such sorcery from this dark underworld of golf instruction rarely finds its way to the mainstream because if too many folks found out about it the mainstream would then be rendered irrelevant....... 😎 Glad you enjoyed it!! Tom
I’m right hand dominate, however I have always played hockey, golf, baseball, left handed. To me this makes sense cause my right hand is always at the end of the stick/bat/club. In tennis, I’m right handed so my right hand would be at the end of the racket. This means a double handed hit in tennis would be exactly how I hit in baseball. Whereas right handed batters/hitters all have their left hand at the end of the club/bat which means they’d never two handed swing a tennis racket like they do a baseball bat. Nobody ever understands this when I explain why my way seems more natural. PLEASE someone here tell me you understand!?!?
It's an interesting scenario, @N J, but it sounds like you've got a good handle on it! Short of saying that someone in your situation needs to train their trail hand to hit - which I realize may be difficult - I would recommend that they work on maintaining their connections and allowing the lower body to bring them into impact. This Hogan video may help to provide a visual in this regard: ruclips.net/video/iejRWhuB7y8/видео.html. Also, even though this impact video lesson focuses on maintaining the angle between the trail arm and the club shaft, it may help to feel impact in a different way that prevents the dominant lead hand from getting out of control: ruclips.net/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/видео.html One of the keys in this situation is to not allow that strong arm - which probably seems to have a mind of its own in anxiously wanting to take over when trying to bust one - to jump ahead of the lower body and throw the entire downswing out of sequence, because if it does it likely means regular trips to Pull-Slice City. If it can be trained instead to trail the lower body to the point where the shaft is parallel to the ground on the way down, then the golfer should be in position to hit hard with the dominant hand as if it were a tennis (or racquetball) backhand shot or throwing a frisbee. Beyond that, here is an excerpt from a members’ forum post by a student in my online school specific to this very issue: “I found a great tip in the Power Distance section. If you are a natural lefty that plays golf right handed this is a breakthrough! Retract your lead shoulder during the downswing as hard as you retract your right shoulder. You will be amazed the speed you generate! It is also a very natural motion for a lefty...” This - along with over 400 other sequenced lessons in a structured self-guided platform - are all there waiting for anyone who wants it for just $10 US/month or $99 US/year. Serious question: I am ambidextrous. I play golf right handed. I've noticed that my left shoulder seems to be dominate at impact. I've tried punching the ball with my right hand, as you suggest, but the feeling is that I'm just slapping at it. Is this normal?
Interesting you mentioned tennis, so I have been playing tennis for 10 years and my dominating hand is right but I would play with left because I play two-handed backand for which you use your left arm to pull through the swing and that motion is very similar to a golf strike. So is it wrong than?
To some extent this is a matter of personal preference, Petar, but do consider that Mr. Hogan said that as long as he started his downswing correctly with the lower body he wished that he had three right hands to apply power to the strike! I do my best to convey multiple feels or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible because we're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the same desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. This one reason is why the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school is so effective, and why so many folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while providing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. Speed comes from a relaxed swing. Years of muscle memory from hitting things with your dominant hand means your swing will never be totally relaxed. If you switch sides you can swing totally relaxed.
Hit with the right like Tommy says do the right right forearm from the hogan secret move video and you'll never look back. Im going to join your website just because you need to get paid for your stuff you put a lot on here for free. Thanks Tom
Hi Roy - I truly appreciate your kind words regarding my lesson content and your support in recognizing the work that goes into this free channel!! I'm very glad to know that you are benefiting from my instruction here, but please - don't just join the school for "donation" purposes. 😂 There is so much value to be garnered as a school member across all aspects of the game, and I hope to see you taking full advantage of it!! I look forward to seeing you in the school and hearing from you there in the Members' Forum! Thanks again! Tom
Tom, my problem is with a conventional distance from the ball my right elbow hits my torso and the face closes (I need to trim some weight I know). I get some big hooks and pull hooks from there. Should I consider moving my hands further from my body? I've already pulled my hips back as far as I can and that does create some space. But it also puts me into a more bent over position, which doesn't feel too good on the back. Your suggestions?
I would not do anything that causes discomfort to your back (or any other body part, for that matter). Yes - I agree that your best option would be to set up with your hands further from your body, recognizing that in doing so you may wish to have your lie angles checked to see if they need to be flattened. Tom
For many years I hit left handed irons but could never for the life of me hit left handed driver. Someone gave me right handed driver at range and I hit 200 yards dead center first time. Now I’m trying to also play irons right handed. But sticking to left handed chipping and putting. I also find that hitting left & right handed irons at driving range is good for my back. And for context, growing up I played baseball/hockey left handed. Write left handed. Swing tennis racket w right hand. 🤷🏻♂️
@SagutoGolf I'm with you ... golf is supposed to be fun right?? It's also kinda fun seeing the surprise on other players faces when I switch back and forth. I've been told many times by lifelong golfers they've never seen anyone drive righty and irons lefty. In a weird way it's almost best for me to hit the irons from the side that's working best that day. Currently I'm carrying both left and right irons in my bag.
You can release the club with either hand playing rt handed.Iv played with pple that are left hand dominate that play rt handed and have plenty of club head speed.Sam snead pulled his lead hand through the ball.If you can swing on plan centrificle force will release the club.I love this guy and have learned so much watching him.I cant fully agree on this one.
Actually, Randy, I teach both, including some variations such as getting the lead arm off the chest in the downswing (which obviously would be a left hand feel for RH players) and firing the trail shoulder through. You see, I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. As such, it is important to understand that the lessons on this channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, step-by-step, position-by-position learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing as it will make for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through my RUclips content. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. Armed with this information, there's no reason to disagree. Instead, simply rest in the fact that this particular lesson is not for you and move on to the next one....😎 Tom Saguto, PGA

I think you might have saved me, I’m left hand dominant , but play right handed, my swing feels like nothing cause I haven’t really tried to use my right hand , as you say it can be trained. Thanks so much for advice.
Thanks for sharing that, Bo - I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated so well with you! Make good use of that trail hand and have fun out there! Tom
Thanks for this, i am a LH thrower but play golf right, i have always struggled with power, any suggestions on exercises to teach the RH to power the swing
The trail arm will FIRE naturally if both arms are kept straight in the swing. You can train the "weaker" trail arm, in your case, to hit harder OR work with what you have and trust that the power will happen naturally if the arms stay straight after impact.
Hi Tom Great lesson and topic I'm ambidexterous Play Golf right handed Tennis left Handed Write right handed I've tried swinging a left hand club it was like chopping wood but my left hand is my dominant hand I'm 63 been playing golf right handed for 40 years what do you think i should do ?

Bob toski in his great pucture book complete guide to better golf, advocates club golfers to strengthen lead arm first...as trail hand tends to over dominate early in golf and causes casting and fat shots, topped shots..
Isn't it interesting - and sad - that with all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still can't break 100?? Epic failures within the realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? Yes - improper or premature use of the dominant hand can certainly cause issues, as can any other incorrect move with any other part of the body. But why would one completely deny themselves the benefits of this very powerful asset? I teach the proper use of the dominant trail hand because, to paraphrase Ben Hogan, if he started the downswing correctly with the lower body he wished he had three right hands to hit the ball! Cheers, Tom
My question: when I hit with my right hand, is my right hand facing up towards the sky at impact or towards the target? Because every PGA tour pro at impact the right hand is facing up, just like in baseball. But the palm of your hand is facing the target at impact, and we don’t hammer that way, we hammer with the palm up. Every single one PGA tour pro, palm of right hand is facing up and the back of left hand (glove logo) facing up. ( with the exception of Ben Hogan). And if I’m standing in front of a PGA pro, at impact or from the top all the way down at impact I’m able to see the logo of the glove on the left hand and the palm of the right hand. Thank you in advance.
I've not tried it myself, but there is a golfer in my online school who has shared his swing speed gains from working through the Superspeed program. TS
Hi Tom, so here’s a thing. I’m currently playing golf left handed. I’m left handed at throwing, writing, playing cricket back in the day, BUT I played tennis, badminton and squash to a pretty good standard right handed. So at 61 and a golfer of circa 30 years what’s your advice ~ learn to play right handed ? 😂
Well I'm certainly not touching that one, James....😂 Is there a problem with your left handed playing that would lead you to consider such a drastic change?? What feels more comfortable and powerful to you?? As for the theme of this particular video and my channel's content in general, know that I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. Saguto, I am in my 50s and just getting back into golf after about 10 years away, is it too late to switch? As a left-hander, I was told when I was a kid that it was better to play right-handed as a lefty. I always felt like it may have been a mistake, and why I struggled to improve despite spending a great deal of time at the game when I was young. Beyond the control and power, I think it sacrifices feel in the short game. i sort of think though that it may be difficult to switch, what you think?
@RamsnDodgersfan - You're never too old to try new tricks...except that this isn't a trick; it really works!! With regard to the lefty/righty thing, that probably wasn't the best piece of advice back then if swinging from the left side came naturally to you. However, now that you're getting back into the game after such a long layoff it's a good opportunity to reevaluate your situation and determine which side feels better to you. Then make your choice and don't look back. After deciding that, my best suggestion is that you consider enrolling in my online school. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only system for the full swing, the short game, and much more. The school's intuitive course curriculum greatly simplifies the entire process through succinct, step-by-step videos, and I'm constantly adding new content. This will really put you on the fast track towards learning everything in a well-organized, self-guided fashion! There's even a members' forum where you can ask me specific swing-related questions and suggest new content ideas, and I will soon be adding live Q&A sessions as well. Here's a link if you'd like additional info: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga. Best of luck to you! Tom
If I try and focus on the right hand it's "fore left" every time. If I focus on swinging and impacting with the back of the left hand then no more hooks, bang down the middle. I acknowledge that we're all different.
Acknowledging that is the key, Andy. I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible because we're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. I newbie with golf. Been training since two month ago. Just realized it's should be played with right arm (iam right handed), i train my self with "no arm" 😂 Question... Today I found a wierd finding.after frustrated to hit my driver I experiment with a thing. If I always pull outward the grip , my left hand always straight and my driver sound more loud and hit ball farther, how it can be ? Does it correct to pull outward using right hand ?
There is an important pressure point in the grip where the palm of the right hand (for a right-handed player) sits on top of the thumb joint of the left hand. If we push the right hand down on top of the left thumb this has the effect of keeping the left arm straight while also causing the wrists to hinge correctly, both of which are key components of power and consistency. Tom
You use many parts to hit the ball, but there are only two parts that are connected to the device that's is actually going to do the hitting! Hi I really hope you see this, I received an injury I dislocated my acrovilicular joint in my left shoulder I am right handed, can I use my right arm to to control club face and hit the ball ? Thanks
Also the reason I mention the injury is because it makes me swing flat, my problem atm is I've been having lots of lessons but my brain is fried with swing thought and because of this I make my back swing, face is in great position till I get to the top then I fan the face open , I'm still hitting straight shots but really high and weak .
Because the top weaker hand is used primarily to control the club not provide power. You don’t want your control hand moving about the club. In addition, the very way in which most good golfers hold a club by using the palm and index finger of their top less dominant hand to grip and control the club during the swing tends to create more opportunity for blisters on that hand versus the lower dominant hand That is why that hand is usually gloved. It is the same reason why many baseball players when batting wear a glove on their lead weaker hand that is closer to the bat end than their stronger power pushing hand that is located more towards the center of the bat. You’ll see many hitters bat that way. You will not see any of them with a glove on their more dominant hand and no glove on their weaker hand. And of course you also have batters who wear gloves on both hands, but if they are only wearing one glove it will always be on their weaker controlling hand.
@@rcg9573 Or, the reason why the glove is worn on the "weaker" which I called the lead hand for right-handed golfers, is due to the fact that the lead hand, what you call "weaker" hand, has the more dominant position on the club where all five fingers are directly on the club. With the exception of 10 finger grip(Baseball grip) which isn't ideal when talking about power. At the end of the day, for most golfers, what you call a "weaker" hand is, in fact, the dominant hand. The Trail hand has partial contact with the club, but it doesn't mean it's the weaker of the two. I think it is best to note that, the dominant hand on the club (Grip) will always be the lead hand, but what needs to be clarified here, is which side is more dominant in a golf swing, and that is up for debates. What this video is showing here, is how to hit the ball with your dominant side, not the dominant hand. Thus, for right-handed players, it's your right side, right elbow, arm, shoulder, which are all active during a golf swing, but the position of the right hand on the club for right-handed golfers is the trail, the least dominant on the club (grip).
Well then, Andi, you can always opt for the "no hands" method... 😎 Seriously, if we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including the proper arm, wrist, and hand action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom
Problem in golf is unlike in tennis or hockey, the less dominant hand is on top of the handle or in dominant position. Coming from tennis background, I could not stand my left hand in dominant position, it took me a while to get used to it. It felt very awkward almost like learning how to write left handed.
Robert Gardner I see a lot of hockey players with dominant hand on top. At least in hockey they have gloves on both hands, but why in golf if one is right handed the glove is on the left hand?
Glove is on the left hand for a right handed swinging player because that is the top hand that is primarily responsible for controlling the club, not supplying power. You do not want the club moving around in the hand that is primarily responsible for controlling the club - the top hand. That is why regardless of whether it is a left handed player or right handed, the top hand is the hand that is gloved in golf because the club in that hand basically sits between the base of the palm pad and the index finger for control. The lower hand that is used for power basically only has its fingers touching the club shaft if you are holding the club correctly and you do not need a glove on that hand. That lower hand is not being used much at all to control the club. It is being used to supply power by pushing the club handle from behind through the hitting zone. No glove is needed on it. Ask a hockey player if they could only wear a single glove would they wear it on their top hand they use to control the stick or would they wear it on their lower hand that supplies power to their shot. Every single one of them would choose to wear that single glove on their top hand and leave their lower hand bare. Unless of course they were some enforcer clown type like Tie Domi, who might choose to leave his top hand bare so he could throw a bare fisted punch faster. LOL
If a hockey player has a dominant hand on top it is because they are ambidextrous, and they are swinging the stick from their naturally weaker side. That would be the only instance that their naturally dominant hand is at the top of the stick, and even in that instance their shot power coming from their upper body is being generated primarily from their lower hand pushing the stick handle through the air from the trailing side of the handle, NOT their top hand pulling the stick handle through the air from the front side of the stick handle. No good hockey player generates the bulk of their shot power by pulling the stick handle towards the net with their top hand. None of them! Same concept applies to how a baseball bat is swung, and the same concept applies to how a golf club is swung. The lower hand ( which is almost always the dominant hand) is providing the bulk of the swings power by pushing the bat, stick, or club handle from the trailing edge side of the handle through the hitting zone. It’s a pushing motion from behind the handle providing the bulk of any power being generated by the upper body during that swinging motion. If a hockey player who is right hand dominant has decided to shoot as a lefty, that player’s shot power from the upper body is still primarily coming from the lower hand on the stick (left hand in this instance) by pushing the stick handle through the air, not by pulling it through the air with their upper more dominant hand. That is what Saguto is advocating in the golf swing. Many hockey players play with their dominant hand on top as you stated because they want to play the same wing side as their dominant hand, but shoot from their weaker side. This is because it is far easier to fire left handed (one time) shots towards the net from the right side with a left handed shot as your body can be completely open to the net as you receive passes from the center and left hand side of the ice. Same thing applies to guys playing left wing and shooting right handed. This is a concept that was developed by the Russians in the early-mid 20th century, and you’ll see loads of Russian and European based wingers playing this way today. Even many American and Canadian wingers have developed this approach today. The Capitals Alexander Ovechkin (one of the best all time winger snipers to play the game) is such a winger. He plays left wing and shoots as a righty. His shot power is almost all coming from his lower body transition and from his lower right hand pushing the hockey stick through the air from behind, not from him using his top hand to pull the stick through the air towards the net from the front side of the stick. Saguto is advocating applying power to the golf swing the exact same way. Lower hand supplies the bulk of the swing/shot power by pushing the handle through the hitting zone from behind the trailing edge of the club’s grip. Regardless of which hand is naturally dominant, the upper body power on a hockey shot, just like a golf shot or a baseball bat swing is generated primarily by the trailing lower hand pushing the stick, club, or bat handle from behind through the hitting zone. Not the top control hand pulling the stick, club, or bat through the hitting zone. And that is what Saguto is advocating.
i always thought- the way you ride a skateboard should be the way you address the ball, i ride goofy so i should swing left handed, i also strike a nail with a hammer with my left hand since it's just very accurate and the hammer feels very comfortable in my left hand. all that said, the free clubs i got were righty and the first set i bought were right handed and i never swung a baseball bat left handed (the rare 'throws: left', 'bats: right' combo) so i don't see how i can switch now, i do own a left handed putter and i find it fun to goof around on the putting green with it once in a while, or impress my friends by "tapping in" an 8 ft. putt "backwards" (with my right handed putter, hitting it with the back of it). i like my right handed swing but any time i ttry to juice up the swing, the ball is going anywhere but where i aim, so distance is a problem for me.and uhh, what do i do ya know? blow another 600-900 bucks on a left handed iron set? 300 driver, few hundred for fairway woods and a rescue club? if i were rich i'd probably do it, but i just can't.
It's an interesting scenario, but you're definitely not alone! Just ask Phil... (from the opposite side, of course) Short of saying that you need to train your trail hand to hit - which I realize may be difficult - I would recommend you work on maintaining your connections and allowing the lower body to bring you into impact. This Hogan video may help to give you a visual in this regard: ruclips.net/video/iejRWhuB7y8/видео.html. Also, even though this impact video lesson focuses on maintaining the angle between your trail arm and the club shaft, it may help you feel impact in a different way that prevents your dominant lead hand from getting out of control: ruclips.net/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/видео.html One of the keys in your situation is to not allow that strong arm - which probably seems to have a mind of its own in anxiously wanting to take over when you're trying to bust one - to jump ahead of the lower body and throw the entire downswing out of sequence, because if it does you're likely taking regular trips to Pull-Slice City. If you can train it instead to trail the lower body to the point where the shaft is parallel to the ground on the way down, then you should be in position to hit hard with the left as if it were a tennis backhand shot or throwing a frisbee. Cheers! Tom
@@SagutoGolf yea those are some good points, i haven't had a chance to get out and practice since i enrolled at saguto.golf but much like that video you linked- i realized when i was watching the chipping school that i do TWO of the things you said not to, chili scooping the club and not accelerating through with my hands in front, i definitely think it's root cause is just the preference in dexterity and which hand i "think" with if that makes sense, because a lot of my ball striking is crispier than kfc since i took the thought out of it and just let my core rotate keeping the club head in a perfect circle, i watched a few of your other courses too about addressing the ball and i think some of that is going to help keep my results even MORE consistent, it's an excellent course btw, when i think about all the money i've spent on golf, it's the best bang for your buck in the entire game, it really is.i used to laugh in the face of stack and tilt, i just thought it was for people who sucked at golf but i had to be honest with myself that, ya know, that's me, i suck and something's gotta give, i would recommend it to anyone though, as much as i've improved, i see how much room for even more improvment there still is and it gets me very excited man, very excited to reinvest the time and effort into the game i thought i'd just never figure out. thanks for putting all this together, and for such a good deal too, you are a freaken life saver.
You have your dominant hand on top of the club which is more natural. I did the same when I started playing golf. I had a problem with slicing when I did this in golf, I didn’t have the same problem in tennis. Phil Nicholson has it figured out, he is playing with right hand in a dominant position. I didn’t lose any speed swinging backhand, just had problem rotating body in that direction causing slicing of the ball. I switched eventually to what’s considered right hand golf and took me quite a while for the right hand to be in the inferior position, now my golf is much better.
No Mickelson is not! Michelson is in fact doing the right hand on top thing because he started golfing lefty to mirror the swing he saw his dad teaching him. In addition, with his right dominant hand in the top position on the club that top hand position basically deactivates and prevents that hand from being overly involved in the swing. Not because he sees it as supplying more power or dominance being on top.
This video is not related - however it can cause you to handle-drag without thinking about it. The natural hitting motion of the right arm can cause you to apply more downward pressure into the ball at impact which would help with handle-dragging.
I'm glad you enjoyed this episode from my channels archives! It's all a matter of whether or not you wish to continue flipping through the zone. With regard to this notion that we need to affect some type of active hand-rolling “release", given the inability of most folks to spend sufficient time at the range to lock in the required exactness of such an action this misguided thought has led countless golfers astray. It's not something that even the vast majority of pros are trying to consciously manufacture during the split second that the clubhead is traveling a distance of approximately 6' from parallel to parallel at speeds in excess of 100 mph. The forearms will naturally "trade places" from pre- to post-impact, but this should not be construed as a contrived move (although many a casual observer has gone down that rabbit hole). There really ought not be any active manipulation of the hands through the zone and attempts to precisely time any such rolling or flipping - which does nothing for swing speed - have relegated many an amateur to the vast abyss of inconsistency and frustration. Sure...if you're left-handed... No disrespect intended towards the legendary ball striker. I'm just not an advocate of hitting with the non-dominant hand. Mr. Hogan wished he'd had three right hands. (And before anyone tells me that Hogan was left-handed, here's an excerpt from a 1987 Golf Magazine interview with Mr. Hogan: GOLF: You were a natural left-hander who took up the game right-handed, weren’t you? HOGAN: No, that’s one of those things that’s always been written, but it’s an absolute myth. The truth is, the first golf club I owned was an old left-handed, wooden-shafted, rib-faced mashie that a fellow gave me, and that’s the club I was weaned on. During the mornings we caddies would bang the ball up and down the practice field until the members arrived and it was time to go to work. So I did all that formative practice left-handed. But I’m a natural right-hander.) Cheers! Tom
My dominant hand is right but in hockey I shoot left - that's how it works in hockey, your non dominant hand should be for support so this is kinda hard to understand if I wanna golf.
Not much hockey here in SC, but still I would guess that when executing a slap shot the lower hand on the stick would be applying power to propel the puck. No? Anyway, Mickelson and Hogan and many others have proven that golf can be played quite well from the opposite of their dominant side! Cheers!

THANK YOU!!
Well done, Robin!!
I am happy to hear this, no more wondering every time I step up to hit the ball. Thanks coach

I truly appreciate your kind words and support, and I am very glad to know that you are enjoying and benefiting from my channel's lesson content!!

I had been thinking I was supposed to use my lead hand, I would pretty much take my right hand completely out of play, and I was playing terrible so I decided to change things up and I started feeling like I was kind of pushing the club through with my right hand and it’s feels so much better more distance and much better contact
Think of throwing a baseball.
You do not use your right hand to push the ball. You use the right hand to throw the ball.

Fantastic! I'm glad this lesson resonated well with you!!

Thanks Tom. You brought me here from another link and really appreciate it.
Great! Glad you found it!!
I'm right hand dominant, and I play baseball and cricket left handed. Golf is where it gets confusing, because like in tennis I play with right hand too.
Well, at least you've got that step-and-a-half advantage going to first base, though that probably won't help you much in golf. 😎
I eat and write left-handed, throw and golf right-handed, and switch hit in baseball. Not necessarily as confused as you, but not completely devoid of nuances....
Anyway, given your rather quirky ambidexterity, perhaps this episode on eye dominance may be of interest: ruclips.net/video/qwQfQiRcl70/видео.html

Never too old for sure, Frank!! Now get out there and have fun with your newfound fountain of youth!!
Thanks very much for sharing!!
Tom
I am right hand dominant, but a left hand cricketer, left hand baseball player and left hand golfer. I have WAY more control and power using a LH swing. Also i am a right hand bowler/pitcher.
I remember hitting one pretty good with my throat, when I was a caddy at Lakeshore CC around 1968.
I'm glad to learn of your improvement, Kelly! That's certainly a significant change, and as such it will take time and repetition to build in comfort and, ultimately, distance.

One of the keys in your current situation is to not allow that strong arm - which probably seems to have a mind of its own in anxiously wanting to take over when you're trying to bust one - to jump ahead of the lower body and throw the entire downswing out of sequence, because if it does you're likely taking regular trips to Pull-Slice City.
It is also a very natural motion.”
I hope this helps, and I really hope to see you soon in my online school, where thousands of folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

I’m left handed in 2 handed stick sports and right handed for throwing, playing tennis. I don’t know how that came to be....anyway, you affirmed what I suspected and that was train my left arm to be dominant! I just wish I was a right hander to match everything else.
I'm in the same boat!
Anthony Willis I can “third” this statement. So you both are thinking of trying to train the left hand to be dominant, rather than move to a right handed swing?
Devon Peters : my right side was dominant but left side seems to work better.

Perfect. Been looking for and answer for this. Good job!
I always hit with lead arm(left) as I was told to do that, I end up injure my right wrist, right arm all the time. Then I wonder something must be wrong then I try using more right arm to propel the swing more and keep left arm neutral, then boom.
And you just confirm my thought. I hit it all wrong all my life, short distance, shank, injury.

I’m right handed, swing a hammer with my right, etc...but I hit left-handed in baseball and use a left-handed stick in hockey. Because I’ve swung those “lefty” I feel more natural and controlled with the motion of swinging a left-handed club, but I don’t have the same power as I assume I do right-handed... What’s your thoughts?
Valentin Vermont I guess it’s a little comforting knowing you’re not the only one, haha. Let me know if you get any guidance! I think I may stick to lefty in golf.
Exactly the same. Right handed dominant. Swing baseball, golf, hockey lefty
I have been doing it backwards for a long time. Thanks 👍

Tom
Also, even though this other video lesson focuses on maintaining the angle between your trail arm and the club shaft, it may help you feel impact in a way that prevents your dominant lead hand from getting out of control: ruclips.net/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/видео.html
One of the keys in your situation is to not allow that strong right arm - which probably seems to have a mind of its own in anxiously wanting to take over - to disconnect too soon, jump ahead of the lower body, and throw the entire downswing out of sequence.
Cheers!
Tom
@@SagutoGolf I agree!
I'm glad you're enjoying the videos Troy! The instruction approach you see from me is what has served my students and my game the best over the years.
I'm a lefty that plays lefty, but by this sense, I play righty, with left handed clubs. I have always pulled through.
My consistency is slightly above terrible. I'm definitely excited to work with this. 🙏🏌️♂️
Wow this just changed me .. I’m a golfer now baby !
Great!! I'm glad this lesson resonated so well with you!!
this guy is awesome! Thanks for keeping it simple
I tell people, “If I asked you to hit a stone (in a golfing direction) with a yardstick in ONE hand, which hand would you use?”
I’m annoyed that I’ve played golf for 38 years trying to emulate Bobby Jones and his lead hand control (though I feel now that he actually controlled the shot with his right.) Like Hogan who said to release the rubber banded hips as the first move in transition, Bobby needed to think lead hand to prevent a demonically overpowering right.
Then my old man told me to use my smart hand like how to hit a nail with a hammer like in this video and when i tried it boy i was so wrong all this time lol
Hitting with my right hand which is clearly my smart hand now gives me much more power, consistency and accuracy..

I may be wrong but isn’t Johnny Miller dominant left hand and he was arguably one of the best iron players ever. I would give up power for ball striking consistency.
Hi Tom i'm left hander dominant im using shoulders more than arms its working for me.
Fantastic! We're all unique, and no matter how many videos of top players we might watch we must each ultimately figure out how to take personal ownership of our swing in order for it work consistently.
Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!!

Might be your best tip
TGM all the way.👍👍
My right hand is my dominate one. But I started playing golf like hockey with my left hand because I have more control. But unfortunately I have a old but tough injuri in my right knee. So I am either forced to switch to the right handed side or i am ending my golf story before it really begins. I started playing golf last year and brang down my hcp from 54 to 28, but now my knee stops my enthusiasm very quickly
I dont know if I am able to change with the age of 57 ?
You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. I hope you'll give the school some thought so we can get you on a path towards truly enjoying this greatest of games in a way that does not put additional strain on your body.

At least you are only 4 years in, Vin. I'm glad to know that you figured it out sooner rather than later!
easier said than done
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Tom
I think Nicholas said... right hand just goes along for the ride. Were they messing with us ?@@SagutoGolf
Also, even though this impact video lesson focuses on maintaining the angle between the trail arm and the club shaft, it may help to feel impact in a different way that prevents the dominant lead hand from getting out of control: ruclips.net/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/видео.html
One of the keys in this situation is to not allow that strong arm - which probably seems to have a mind of its own in anxiously wanting to take over when trying to bust one - to jump ahead of the lower body and throw the entire downswing out of sequence, because if it does it likely means regular trips to Pull-Slice City.
Finally! Someone with the same logic as me! Lol
That's that range at Litchfield Country Club correct?
It sure is, John!
Serious question: I am ambidextrous. I play golf right handed. I've noticed that my left shoulder seems to be dominate at impact. I've tried punching the ball with my right hand, as you suggest, but the feeling is that I'm just slapping at it. Is this normal?
You should feel a powerful blow to the golf ball. Select the hand that allows you to deliver the most force!
Speed comes from a relaxed swing. Years of muscle memory from hitting things with your dominant hand means your swing will never be totally relaxed. If you switch sides you can swing totally relaxed.

Tom
Always powered with my left and struggled with constantly, cupping, lag loss, etc.
Well, let's try changing the program, Korey!

Pretty impressive stuff!
Whatever works best for your enjoyment of the game is fine by me. Let your ball striking and shot shape be your guide!!
Instead, simply rest in the fact that this particular lesson is not for you and move on to the next one....😎

Cheers,
Tom
@@SagutoGolf i think golf instruction , sadly, is not standardized. So amateurs get multiple messages...
Palm of right hand facing the target. Also angled down slightly - meaning you would have forward shaft lean at impact

What is your view on the superspeed protocols that include swag with your non dominant side?
I've not tried it myself, but there is a golfer in my online school who has shared his swing speed gains from working through the Superspeed program.

Well I'm certainly not touching that one, James....😂
Is there a problem with your left handed playing that would lead you to consider such a drastic change?? What feels more comfortable and powerful to you??
As for the theme of this particular video and my channel's content in general, know that I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible.

However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the same desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. This is one reason is why the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school is so effective, and why so many folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. @@SagutoGolf many thanks.
@Andy Thomas - My pleasure!!
I newbie with golf. Been training since two month ago.
Just realized it's should be played with right arm (iam right handed), i train my self with "no arm" 😂
Question...
Tom
@@SagutoGolf thanks Tom for your prompt reply ❤️
Your pressure works like a charm, my grip wobble gone 😎
As Plumbers have always said, "Right tighty, lefty loosie".
Are you not suppose to use rotation and hips to hit the ball?

Agreed. But one question remains, why most people wear a glove on the other hand?
And of course you also have batters who wear gloves on both hands, but if they are only wearing one glove it will always be on their weaker controlling hand.
i hate gloves and will never wear one again
Tom, I don’t know what you put in your coffee but it’s works!
I'm left-handed and been swinging regular right for 10+ years. I've always wanted my dominant hand be the control hand.
Whatever works best for you is fine by me! As I regularly tell folks, let your ball striking and shot shape be your guide.
I agree 100%. The right HAND is the clubface.
Can you please explain that?
I'm a righty and my current new instructor is telling me to take my right hand out of the swing and pull with the left. Confusing.
What if you use both hands to hit a hammer and do most things? Then how do you know which way to swing?
Well then, Andi, you can always opt for the "no hands" method... 😎
Seriously, if we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot.
While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

Problem in golf is unlike in tennis or hockey, the less dominant hand is on top of the handle or in dominant position. Coming from tennis background, I could not stand my left hand in dominant position, it took me a while to get used to it. It felt very awkward almost like learning how to write left handed.
In hockey your top hand is your less dominant hand if you are swinging the stick from your natural side, and virtually all hockey players do that.
(from the opposite side, of course)
Short of saying that you need to train your trail hand to hit - which I realize may be difficult - I would recommend you work on maintaining your connections and allowing the lower body to bring you into impact. This Hogan video may help to give you a visual in this regard: ruclips.net/video/iejRWhuB7y8/видео.html. Also, even though this impact video lesson focuses on maintaining the angle between your trail arm and the club shaft, it may help you feel impact in a different way that prevents your dominant lead hand from getting out of control: ruclips.net/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/видео.html
One of the keys in your situation is to not allow that strong arm - which probably seems to have a mind of its own in anxiously wanting to take over when you're trying to bust one - to jump ahead of the lower body and throw the entire downswing out of sequence, because if it does you're likely taking regular trips to Pull-Slice City. If you can train it instead to trail the lower body to the point where the shaft is parallel to the ground on the way down, then you should be in position to hit hard with the left as if it were a tennis backhand shot or throwing a frisbee.
Cheers!

Like Phil I'm right handed and swing left you ain't convincing me to switch to right my swing was built for comfort not for speed just the way I like!
@@Mr.mallaer yeah I also had issues with rotating the body around the ball but once I got the hang of the timing the results are pretty consistent
How does this tie in with the "handle dragging" video?
This video is not related - however it can cause you to handle-drag without thinking about it. The natural hitting motion of the right arm can cause you to apply more downward pressure into the ball at impact which would help with handle-dragging.
So dominant hand at the bottom of the grip?
Great video however as a heavy flip over motion I can’t have any pressure in right hand. I’d hook every ball. lol

Moe Norman says to hit with your left hand. What do you think about that?
Sure...if you're left-handed...
No disrespect intended towards the legendary ball striker. I'm just not an advocate of hitting with the non-dominant hand. Mr. Hogan wished he'd had three right hands. (And before anyone tells me that Hogan was left-handed, here's an excerpt from a 1987 Golf Magazine interview with Mr. Hogan:
GOLF: You were a natural left-hander who took up the game right-handed, weren’t you?
HOGAN: No, that’s one of those things that’s always been written, but it’s an absolute myth. The truth is, the first golf club I owned was an old left-handed, wooden-shafted, rib-faced mashie that a fellow gave me, and that’s the club I was weaned on. During the mornings we caddies would bang the ball up and down the practice field until the members arrived and it was time to go to work. So I did all that formative practice left-handed. But I’m a natural right-hander.)
Cheers!

Cheers!
