- Thank you for choosing to watch A Kildeer bird and her broken wing act | Kildeer call
Killdeer birds will attempt to lure threats away from their nests away by pretending to have a broken wing. The Kildeer call is a very distinctive sound and is easily recognizable.
No Kildeer birds were harmed in this video.

So many angry comments here but as for me its educational. Never seen that bird before and never would have known their character if not for videos like this. Thanks.
But why the name is killdeer though🤔??
Kildeer are unique and beautiful birds. I passed her every day on my way to the mailbox, so one day I decided to record her. I was about 15 feet away and zoomed in so I wouldn't get too close to her nest. Thank you for the supportive comment.
The kildeer are supposedly named for the sounds they make.
@@michaelh7538 Thanks, that also means no deer gets killed by their sound 👍
From what I've come across they get their name from the sound of their call.
I LOVE killdeer! They lay their eggs in the most stupid of places, then do the cleverest and most persuasive of acts to convince predators they're hurt badly, easy prey; and lead them away.
Once they're sure you're far enough away, they fly off, making loud calls. I swear, it sounds like they're saying "HA! Sucker!"
Beautiful and cute little birds, and so clever.❤❤❤
Grouse do the same thing, but are a much larger bird.
My elementary school had a killdeer lay eggs in the middle of the campus and she would do this all the time. Expert actress.
Those birds lay their eggs in the strangest places. Grouse do the same distraction act
Other birds: I'm going to spend days building my nest with hundreds of twigs and grass clippings so my babies are comfortable.
Killdeer: Nice, rocks.
LoL. Rocks on a road, too.
I think it's important to remember that we live besides wildlife all the time! She's somewhat stressed, but it's a natural thing, especially around us humans. She's acting this way as a wild bird. I think non-interference purism only works if we think that we are separate from nature, which is not true! Michael filming this has been a good way for me to show others a killdeer's natural response to predators while being only a short period of stress on a wild bird that she'll likely not remember. That act is incredibly convincing, especially near the end, glad to know she successfully hatched them all! It was pretty interesting that she was clearly running away from her nest to lure you away.
She was right on the driveway. I passed her every day on my way to the mail box. Every day she scolded me for walking by.
When I worked for the railroad, there was a killdeer that made her nest on an industrial spur we used once daily. Everytime the train approached her nest, she would hobble outside the track trying to stay ahead of train. When she couldn't stay ahead, she would fly back, and wait for the train to clear her nest. Afterward, she sat back on her 3 little eggs like nothing happened. I'm still amazed how closely their eggs resemble the ballast.
They are strange birds for sure. They might like the rocks because they retain heat
She try to roll for deception but the inteligence stat of the human was to high to pass
The Kildeet and the Grouse both use this technique to draw attention away from their nests. Highly intelligent creatures for sure.
That reaction is caused by extreme anxiety on the part of the bird. I've seen two types of reactions. One reaction is like what you got where she's stretched out like that. She's basically anxious you might step on the nest. The other reaction I see from these birds is more of a fake-out where she tries to get you to chase her. Sh might pretend to sit on a fake nest or act more injured than the reaction you got.
I agree. She had no idea that I meant her nest no harm. She even moved to within arms reach of me. What an amazing bird!
Incorrect. This is simply an instinctual behavior. Birds don't have a frontal cortex that's required for any complex emotional thought or feelings. You're giving animals human characteristics which is incorrect.
@@ZeginMakesMusic you couldn't be anymore louder and wrong
Had a killdeer nest in my yard. She’d do the act every time me and my cats went out. She abandoned her nest a few days ago. 2 ages are gone, ones empty, and there’s only one left
She may have gone to find a different place to roost... somewhere that there isn't so much attention to her nest. Thank you for commenting.
The way she approaches you! Wow!!! I've never gotten so close to one, even while photographing their nests
I passed her every day on my way to check the mail. Although she "knew" me, she was still very protective of her nest. The eggs all hatched and all the birds were fine.
man I love these birds. I work at a plant nursery and we have a ton of outdoor gallon pots. once, a pair made a nest in one. today I saw three chicks running around with mom and dad. They are so cuuute 😁
Reminds me of a wind up toy when they start walking and making that noise
Hahaha... they do sound like that
what a good mama
Yes indeed! 🙂
There's a killdeer couple that nest in one of the raised beds in my garden. I get to hear this for up to several hours at a time.
They really do get upset very easy.
Baby killdeer are so adorable! The are all legs! Lol
Years ago a neighbor asked my help. A killdeer had built its nest in his garden about 3ft in, in a row of lettuce. He wondered what to do. So I moved he nest. (he said it wouldnt work but.....) When she left , I took a large shovel and carefully slid into the dirt (about 3 inches of soil under the nest so as not to disturb it; about 12"" around and carefully slid it it all about 8 feet out into his field. Then came the problem of relocating her when she came back. She was upset the nest wasnt where she had left it and It took about 15 minutes of carefully "herding" her, til she recognized "the nest" I got her reunited with her eggs and she did finish hatching and raising them. Both of use were happy - well all 3 of us (and her babies too I suppose).. LOL So its possible !
That is amazing! Thank you for sharing that with us.
beautiful bird, she deserve oscar for her performance
She was there every day when I checked my mailbox. The eggs all hatched and they went on with their little bird lives. Thank you for watching
I remember _years_ ago the first time I saw a killdeer - she had made her nest on the beach where my friends and I were playing. We told our parents about the wounded bird and, when they came to see, they told us what was really going on. *God is so amazing!!!* He did this same thing so long ago... "See Satan? Here I am, up on this cross, all wounded and broken and dying... Come and get me..." And, in the meantime, Jesus was providing us with salvation!!! -- So good to see/meet you over at Marie's channel this morning (Singing). Blessings abundant, Shannon A.
God truly is an amazing creator!
@@michaelh7538 Amen, that He is, that He is! :) Blessings!
Actually, the Killdeer did it first. So, ya know, Jesus kinda stole it.
Aww look at her go!! With the amount of work it was almost mean not to follow her lol
Ive got a breeding family that comes to our steel shop every summer. This year they had 3 babies. They just hatched Tuesday. 😊 I kinda protect them from the crew. I look forward to them every spring. Very interesting critters. They're even starting to trust me a little and they follow me in the machine I drive.
Awesome. Mama is still as protective as she can be. My bird decided to have her nest right on the driveway.
Very good actor!!! The Oscar go to...
What a beautiful bird
I actually thought a killdeer had a broken wing and I caught it
They would sacrifice themselves to protect their young.
@@michaelh7538 it's fine I let it go a year ago
Imagine what she's saying without everything bleeped out.
She was telling me off, for sure
I love these birds.
This just showed up in my recommended-
Remember me when this blows up
Thank you for your comment. I appreciate your support.
The people in these comments: "Stop harassing the bird!" 🙄🙄🙄🤦🏼🤦🏼🤦🏼
I explained in the video description that the bird is on my driveway and I had to walk by the nest to get my mail. She is fine. Her babies all hatched and they were fine and went off to have their families. The purpose of this video is educational as to the odd behavior of this particular bird. No harm came to any living creatures. Thank you for your comment, I appreciate you taking the time to watch.
@@michaelh7538 No, I totally understand. I think the people in the comments are being completely ridiculous.
The Strength of a Mother! She Gave Me Tear's... Her Love is Un-Wordable! He Could've Stepped on her if he Wanted, An She Would've been Content with The (Knowing) of Her Defending her Babies 😭😭..
The Kildeer are truly amazing birds. Very resilient. Neither she nor her nest was harmed in any way. This video is intended to be educational so ppl could recognize the Kildeer if they encounter one
Yes Sir!! Beautiful Work
Wonderful education for students. Thank you for sharing this!
Thank you very much. I appreciate that
Those Eggs 🥚 are like Camouflaged.
Killdeer always amaze me. Especially out here, they lay in our field every year. Always feel terrible to go out and disk, if possible I try to watch out for their nest but just blends in so much I sometimes run it over.
Again amazing creatures. Especially how they can be out without a coyote coming along
It's a hazard that goes with how they prefer to nest. They are amazing... Grouse play the broken wing game, too
A friend of mine just came across a similar situation but wasn't too sure what was going on... thank you so much for posting this
You're welcome. All her babies hatched and went off to make their nests of their own in rocks somewhere else.
Cute...
I agree 100%
"Look at me I'm over here..."
Haha, she is a feisty one for sure.
This one wasn’t the best actor I’ve seen. The ones in my backyard when I was growing up really knew how to fake a wing injury.
She sure put on a good show. Grouse do the same thing
This act is called a “Crippled Bird Act” :) at school i studied the Killdeer and i have a lot of information about the killdeer also knowns as a Charadris vocfiferis
They are cool 😎 funny birds to watch but i can’t figure out why they lay their eggs in the worse places.. like the shells in the middle of the parking lot at work
It's a strange world we live in, isn't it?
Maybe they can’t control when they’re laying their eggs like other birds? There needs to be scientific reasons to why they lay eggs in unsafe places and not on top of a tree or something. First thing that came to my mind was that they lay eggs just like humans who can’t control when baby decides to come out…
that nest is a bit too close to the road lol
This one is right on the edge of the road. I hope her and her little ones are ok.
Such angry squeakers! I love how dramatic they are about protecting their nest
It didn't matter how many times I walked past her nest, she got just as angry every time. All the babies were fine and went off and are living their bird lives. Thank you for your comment.
So much complaints from people who obviously never lived near kildeer. Learn before you speak. I grew up around these; the OP did not do anything to "abuse" the kildeer. Ridiculous.
Thank you for your comment. I passed her every day on my way to the mailbox. I have been very careful to avoid her nesting spot. All the chicks were born healthy and went about their lives after they got old enough to fly. No birds were harmed in the making of this video.
Wonderful and also very beautiful bird
あんな敵に見つかりやすそうな所に巣を作るとは大胆だなあ、と思いました。
Killdeer like to build their nests on the ground, usually in low-lying places like ditches next to roads.
It is a mystery to me too. The nest was right on the gravel driveway.
Nature is wonderful
fantastic !
All the eggs hatched and they all went on to live their little bird lives.
Amazing i saw & heard one last night
Oscar is .... 'Killdeer!!!'
She does put on a show!
This video could easily have been shot on my drive at our former home in the country. In fact, I watched it see if was indeed a video I had posted on my Facebook page many years ago (it wasn't). There was a killdeer who put her nest on the very same spot for several years in a row. She got to where she wouldn't try to lure the kids and me away from her nest, and the little ones would run around us.
The ground birds must adapt to their environment to survive. All the eggs hatched and they all went on to live their happy bird lives.
angry smoke alarm
yes she is. hahaha
I almost stepped on a nest and she got me. I always wondered what kind of bird this was.
Grouse does the same thing. They will wait until you are right up on them hoping you won't see them and that you won't step on them.
Nice video👍🤓👍thanks for sharing. Momma pertecting her babies 👍👍👍👍
All the babies hatched ok. Grouse will do the same thing. Thank you for watching, Lisa.
My son has one at his work, it near the river in South Carolina
They really are beautiful birds. They are quite noisy though. You go to check your mail box and get yelled at by them. LoL
It looks if the bird is trying to communicate with him
The bird was telling me to get the heck away from her nest. It was the first time I witnessed the Kildeer and her act.
She sort of looks like she's wearing an old-timey striped prison inmate outfit, and has very likely seen things.
She read you the riot act.
Yes she did... and she did it every day until her babies hatched.
Mine actually put its tail in front of it'd face and started kind of waving it.
Maa to maa hoti hai 🙏
Saving her eggs
Build your nest in a tree you silly bird
A non-comformist, don’t you know.
At pioneer water land there’s a killdeer in the playground with sand u go over the lil bridge and then by the bench there it is
खुप छान निसर्गाचा एक आविष्कार दाखवला
Thank you
😊😊😊😊
Thank you!
bird with an IQ of 200
Very smart birds indeed. Thank you for watching
that bird looks, acts and sounds like a sand piper
She's a Killdeer for sure. Grouse do a similar broken wing act.
Cmon man there’s no need to intentionally cause this bird great stress just for a RUclips vid
@King Joffrey obviously it’s not the end of the world but still, there’s just no need lol
@@nickrigdon8883 it literally happens everyday that's what they do against any predators. If anything, this video educates people, i didnt even know there was a type of bird that lay their eggs on rocks so if i ever come across one ill make sure to look around to avoid crushing their nest.
TL DR you're a softie
@@callmepasta600 same until it lives in a field next to my work and I spend an hour looking for the name of the thing. But the babies are Soo cute. And they're super fast for some reason. I thought there was 1 bird. Then I saw two, next thing I know two baby killdeer are running around so fast I can't picture them (from afar). But I wonder where their nest is. I have a pretty good idea. But out of respect I just stay clear of it. Avoid the part of rocks in the field and be on my way to work. But I now love seeing them
@@chanelleblouet7609 yes man I would do the same. Stepping on the eggs would be the saddest thing 😕
Male karen 😂😂😂
There is one at our school play ground
I hope the kids leave it alone.
Honestly if you really look at those eggs and their beautiful they dont look like normal stand out eggs. They look like little stones only way u would notice that they're eggs is because of her. Definitely still a hazard due to many ground animals though.
Sacrifices of a Mother
She was willing to sacrifice, but none was necessary. Her nest was left alone.
Someone needs to tell this killdeer that we have large food chains like KFC involving cooking birds lol 😂
This bird prefers to be on the rocks.
They live in arizona right?
They are found all over North America, but this one was in North Carolina
We have killdeer in Iowa, in fact every state I have been in have killdeer.
Yeah I seen plenty of them in Tennessee.
Definitely have them in Oklahoma too.
Nice video 👍😍😍😍💓💓💓😍😍😍👍
Killdeer is the worst name you could name a bird. Someone kindly explain why it's called so
Great question!!! Killer (in America) are named after the sound they make (???). They ate are also known as Chattering Plover or Noisy Plover. I hope this answers your question.
@@michaelh7538 Thank you for the information. Much appreciated 👍👍
Laying eggs on the ground is very risky..a hawk could get her..or any land based animal ..very obvious
they are very resilient birds. Grouse also pretend to have broken wings but the Grouse are much larger in size.
Lots of birds have nests on the ground like mallard ducks. In general the nests, the eggs, the female bird are all camouflaged very well. As long as the hen is motionless, you will not see a nesting bird. A hawk or fox will pass by and not see them. Human eyes are highly developed, color, motion, outline perception make it easier to see things. But if the hen is motionless, you will not notice her.
Бедная птичкп
From thumbnail I expected a deer under those wings, killed by this kill-deer bird. 🙆🏼♂
She is a beautiful bird for sure.
@@michaelh7538 Ya, never knew of this bird🙂
Poor MAMA is all stressed out! Leave her alone.
I was 15 feet away and zoomed in. The bird was not harmed. The eggs hatched, all the birds were healthy and the birds grew up to have families of their own. Thank you so much for your comment
Pretty ingenious, until the bird gets caught, and the eggs die due to lack of incubation.
The rocks retain heat longer than a nest. it is still very hazardous to lay eggs on a gravel driveway
Whats the point in laying the eggs there. Raccoon will have a snack.
Who knows why she lays eggs on the rocks out in the open. It's a mystery to me
They have been doing it for hundreds of years, And they are thriving still, so I guess they must be doing something right.
I love kildeers, but they're so histrionic and dumb as dirt. Seriously, she put her nest right next to the road?
I theorize it's because rocks retain heat longer than grass nests. It is pretty dumb of them
Its because before humans laid rock all over the damn place wherever there was exposed rock was a good place to lay eggs. They evolved to lay eggs on exposed rock, like an exposed cliff face or on top of a high hill. This was before us stupid humans laid rock everywhere, Confusing its evolutionary instinct.
Con chim có tổ như ta có nhà.Vậy đừng trêu chọc chúng mọi người nhé.
Not so sure causing that mother so much distress is worth a video. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's not.
I passed her every day going to the mail box. Every day, she does the same thing. Thank you for watching.
Kildeers are drama queens AND they choose to nest near people. She probably carries on like that several times a day.
Leave the bird and eggs alone....🐦 looked so stressed...
Actually, I was about 15 feet away, just zoomed in as close as it would go. The eggs eventually hatched, the birds were all healthy and went on to have families of their own. Thank you for watching
Did you have to torture her for that long!!
The bird is fine.she did that several times a day. All her babies were healthy and went on their way.
Abusing?
No, not at all. I was far away, zoomed in
