    Just tore mine down and the timing chain guide was missing! Someone probably made the same mistake you did and just ran it that way. Chain ended up wearing a hole in the cylinder and someone jb welded an aluminum patch on it. Luckily I was able to find a new to me cylinder . Valves are burnt and I'll be disassembling them tonight to see what kind of parts I'm going to have to scrounge up. Picked up the bike for 800 bucks which, in this market for old trail bikes, is a steal. I hope to bring her back to her old glory soon. Thank you for sharing your rebuild. Between this and the proper shop manual, rebuilding this engine isn't that difficult.

    Love watching these bro. When I was your age I was doing the same. I'm 25 now and I couldn't yell you how much shit I have learned over the years from just tinkering with machines like you do. One of my favorite things ever is just being in the garage wrenching.

    I was going crazy when you started putting the head back on without that guide! always keep your eye on what parts you have on the bench.

    Andrew you really have great patience...
    The whole time you were reassembling the engine, I kept thinking that you hadn't installed the timing tensioner...🙄🙊
    Oh well,on the bright side, you are now proficient with tearing down and rebuilding Honda 250s!!!💯👍

    I got a Honda Xl 500s recently.
    When driving, it is switched off twice.
    It had no oil inside when checking.
    Now the Kickstarter is blocked and won't come down. I'm trying to open it up and hope to revive it..
    I could see, how the engine looks like, thanks to your video.

    Great job on the rebuild. These old XL's use a metal valve cover gasket which help clearance the cover on the camshaft, you may want to find one eventually.

    • @gronkvbs2795
      @gronkvbs2795 Год назад +1

      Metal head gasket...
      There is no gasket between the head and the rocker cover. Manual states "the cylinder head face coated with a thin, even film of silicone rubber jointing compound", otherwise known as Hondabond. Most manufacturers have their own version (ex: Yamabond) and Permatex makes a universal substitute called Motoseal.

    • @Peanutdinos3000
      @Peanutdinos3000 Год назад +1

      @@gronkvbs2795 RFVC engines (1984 to present) require a metal gasket to clearance the head cover to the cylinder head. I was mistaken regarding the earlier XL models. Permatex Ultra Grey is another excellent HondaBond substitute when not used for gasoline applications.

      @@Peanutdinos3000 you're right about the RFVC motors. I never knew that. I don't have any Hondas that new! Hahaha. 😛

    The ring end gap WEAR LIMIT is 20 thousanths (0.020"). If you stuck a 0.020" feeler guage in there and it fit then the end gap is too big. The optimal operating range is 6 to 10 thousanths (0.006- 0.010") and you absolutely replace when it gets to 20 thou. Since the rings were new your cylinder bore is outside of the specs for the rings (and probably the piston) you used.I'm sure it's running well and maybe not even smoking but if it were me I'd take another look at the ring end gap now that they have taken a set as well as the piston to cylinder clearance.

      Try looking up exact part numbers on Ebay. If nothing there you might just need a parts engine. Or that engine might end up as parts.
