Hi Chris. That is certainly a common issue with many producers. As i'm sure you discovered on the minimal tech course we cover the arrangement, mixdown and develoment of your track as the courses progress to the final weeks. This is where the 1-2-1 video feedback really comes into its own for our students, as Jonny (or whoever your tutor is) can give you advice specifically related to the stage you are at with your track and help you over this tricky but crucial hurdle in the production process.
Very useful and informative tutorial.. as someone who is just starting to get the basic nuances of Ableton Live, I found this very insightful. Thank you!
Hey Salladspjk :-) it may be because the layer/chain you've added has a longer 'attack' than the first layer so when you launch the clip the layers seems to be staggered, the second layer may just take some time to be noticeable if this is the case as some of the patches have an 'evolving' texture. Try adjusting the attack control that is most likely mapped to one of the macro controls to tighten up the attack. Hope that helps... JM
Great work as always and very clear explained, but I have one question regarding the layering: You adjusted the volume of each layer, but is there any reason why not splitting each layer additionally in it's own band (low, mid, high) and stick them with a bus compressor together? Would be very helpful if you can highlight this:-)
Thanks for you answer. I'm pretty sure that is not the case though, I don't have the sounds used in this video so i mad my own sound and duplicated it and added delay to one of them and arpeggiator to the other, so the attack should be the same for both chains
perhaps you need to tune your attack and release on you compressor if you are side chaining. of adjust the look ahead value of the compressor (demonstrated in this tut)
For the side chaining, couldn't you just drop the compressor on the main instrument rack once? Rather than dropping it on each individual instrument in the rack?
When I do this the different layers start playing at slightly different times so it sounds .. I don't know how to say it, but you get it hopefully. Do you know why? =(
i can't figure out how to get the individual samples in the drum rack to appear in the sidechain selection menu like that. pls halp lol i hate having to set up a ghost
He actually shows you exactly how to do that in the video. You have to remember that the drum samples must be already loaded into one of the channels. It wont read them from a sample library. The compressor can only select from drum samples that exist in one of the channels. So you just select the channel you want to use (i.e. the drum rack you are using), and then select the relevant sample within that rack, which is usually the kick.
haha, yes man john talabot, i saw him live, i like this video already. i dont think buying presets is what i want to do, i want to be fluent with the nuts and bolts, not just the knobs

That sounds very well. I work with ableton, too and produce my own tracks on my youtube channel. It makes a lot of fun.
using loops? hmmm. Also, using the mute buttons to bring the layers in and out during an arrangement is far from ideal as it cuts out any tail off from the delays etc. All this video does is show how to layer instruments in an instrument rack, nothing more. You would gain far greater control over the components if you wrote them on seperate channels..
legit techniques and all but nothing in this really qualifies as a melody, its just the root notes of 3 chords played in unison/jumping around octave, and is definitely not layered melodies.
jonescrusher1 Technically you are right, but I think sweeterthananything was referring to the fact that it is just a chord progression that he was using and there is really no melodic structure to it. I think he just wanted to get more flare with the melody.
There's no hard and fast rule to sidechain, only use it when necessary. EQ is another route, but sidechain is still very effective, and if it's done correctly, it shouldn;t detract from the groove.
***** Thanks Ve Me. People these days don't make their own music, they just download Samples, Presets and use Loops. Destroying the music industry imo. Everyone that hates on you feels the guilt from using loops.
One of the best tutorials I've seen. Good speed, friendly non-condescending tone, and lots of new ideas.
this is one of the best tutorials I've ever seen. very thorough.

great turorial really shows how to make your tracks sound fuller by taking advantage of abletons instrument racks and effects.
I'm not even into this type of music but found seriously interesting. Good stuff Jonny.
OK... Can certainly feed this back into the ideas for future vids from Jonny and our other tutors so keep an eye out for those :)
Skip to 1:47 to cut the crap.
my man
Thank you
fr, thank you
REALLY enjoyed this one! Using effects is a lot less intimidating after seeing this.

"it's an instrument rack inside an instrument rack" mind explosion
awesome video, super excited for my deep house class starting soon!
Thanks for the AWESOME tutorial! You taught me quite a bit that I didn't already know! :)

excellent tutorial!
the way he manipulated the EQs on the piano is amazing

Really nice tutorial
00:20 man... i havent even slept yet and you already tuned the mood...
Top quality tutorial as usual..!
fantastic tutorial. found it both fun to watch. and i learnt tones of stuff from it. :)
you mentioned something about getting a human feel in the song you were working with...where is it? thanks good work on the effects rack btw
Really cool!
Brilliant!!
. Thanks for the new tips.
Now I'm curious how this would work as a counter melody.
sounds great, cheers for sharing the know how!!
Is there a way to add independent sends to those mallets in the chain??
great demo by the way
sound made me think of pantha du prince - bohemian forest.. Great song
Very useful, thank you.
Good job
this vid blew my fucking mind, thanks!
Nice one :) Useful for percussions too
Great video from the moonlighting Robert de Niro - lol.
Thanks!!
Nice work!!!
i'd love to see a tutorial just on that piano with the delay.
For the side chaining, couldn't you just drop the compressor on the main instrument rack once? Rather than dropping it on each individual instrument in the rack?
Thanks for the tutorial, where is that "Analog" instrument please?
you need to have ableton live suite, but I think that you can get it online from ableton's site as well
Nice video, thanks
Good Morning!
Hi, Hope you ok.. How can i have a piano sound like you have in your tutorial??
awesome!!
When I do this the different layers start playing at slightly different times so it sounds .. I don't know how to say it, but you get it hopefully. Do you know why? =(
So this can only work with the Skiddaw Stones?
13:40 "just drag the analog in from the browser". I don't see an Analog Audio Effect in Live 9
its actually an instrument. should be there if you own the suite version
Can you just leave the track pan of all tracks in the middle?
Thank You.
Interesting stuff. Thanks :)

7:03 - instrument rack Inception
Nice

Anyone know what the chords in the piano part are?
so how did u get the piano loop?
Was literally scrolling down thinking "I wonder if anyones pointed out he looks like de niro..."
Thanks, you look a Robert DeNiro BTW.
I was just thinking to myself, "Hmmm, I wonder what John Davies has to say about this tutorial?"
Rack inside another rack? INSTRUMENTRACKCEPTION
7:08, Yo dawg, I heard you like Instrument racks.
7.55
Rackception

Just upload project file. Reverse engineering much more easy
...so you can midi map, while you midi map!
denirowwwwwwww
it's $80 helll no

sweeterthananything what qualifies a melody? A single note played repeatedly can be a melody.
jonescrusher1 Technically you are right, but I think sweeterthananything was referring to the fact that it is just a chord progression that he was using and there is really no melodic structure to it. I think he just wanted to get more flare with the melody.
Harmony is the building block of melody. You'll learn about this once you get past Music Theory 101.
such poor use of side chain. sounded like shit. took all groove away. side chain so overused and so poorly used in todays productions.
Enlighten us, then. How to use sidechain in a better way, according to yourself?
don;t use it. Mix ur shit right and chop ur audio u lazy fuckers. Precision for pros.
There's no hard and fast rule to sidechain, only use it when necessary. EQ is another route, but sidechain is still very effective, and if it's done correctly, it shouldn;t detract from the groove.
Using loops is cheating imo
Have fun using ya loops and calling yourself a producer 😊
Cool
***** yeah fuck all those people making music with computers! no real music anyways! -.-
***** the magic happens in processing, dude, even tho this stuff is verging
