True the mom was the bad guy that she the bad guy she told him not to make her be and she is the one that made herself be the bad guy all the father did was treat his son's day of birth like it is a important day because it was the day he was born and at the end of the day because she was upset that her son disobeyed with her father so it was in spite of the father-and-son I know she won't tell the Sun that but it didn't today that's why she divorced him therefore it's because she was mad at both of them

    • @Shanethefilmmaker
      @Shanethefilmmaker 3 года назад +6

@@higurashianduminekoconnect1702 That's not quite accurate. Years ago I would have agreed, as that's how I felt when I first watched this movie. However getting older and rewatching this, it's safe to say they're both in the wrong. For starters, while Daniel means well, he is very immature and irresponsible. While he quit for noble reasons, it's implied that he couldn't hold down a job properly before, for reasons more petty. Also the birthday party while the cause of the fight in this instance, was merely the last straw. It's implied they've fought before and initially the reason they didn't divorce then, was because they thought they still loved each other. Much of why she seems like the bad guy is because she's often the one who has to lay down the law and hand out the punishments, while he gets to be the fun parent. The kids pretty much taking advantage of that every chance they get. It was then and there she realized, while Daniel was probably in denial that she fell out of love with him. It wasn't until he became Mrs. Doubtfire, that he started to own up to his past faults. Laying down the law when he needs to as well as learning how to properly take care of the kids. In the first scene in the apartment, his home was a mess and he couldn't cook food, so they had Chinese Takeout. Then later on when his worker came to check on him, he straightened the place out, then picked up on cooking skills to better play the part of the strict but fun British nanny. While Miranda has her fair share of faults too. Such as trying her hardest to push him out of their kids lives, before he took on the persona. She does indeed have a heart and it showed when she realized how far she went in the legal proceedings after the reveal. The entire aesop of this movie was that neither parent is perfect, but they try their best to do what they think is right. As shown in the end where he was able to see the kids again while Doubtfire gives divorce advice to a kid fan.

The day when the divorce was finalized and Daniel had all his things to move out, Chris told Daniel that it's all his fault that if he didn't have a birthday or a party, the divorce wouldn't of happened where Daniel then said that it was waiting to happen which probably meant that Miranda was looking for an idea to divorce Daniel since she never loved him from the beginning (being unknown as to why she accepted his proposal which must have been a joke).

Well it depends. I neither encourage fighting then showing to kids about parents trouble nor masquerading to the kids about how happy married couples are.
It is however a good thing to show the kids parents are disscussing (no fighting/ shouting though) about a matter in serious topic that usually uncomfortable to show how open they are and how parents as couple trying to talk about what just happened. This then should be ended to their final discussion for solving the problems and reconciliation between both parties.
By doing so, not only kids gonna learn the reality of marriage (in the sense of opposing film's happy ever after image), but also giving them understanding of couple's care to their house they build + relief from cynism of married life (I mean just because married is full of crazy things, it doesn't always mean there's no good things within it). Afterall, what usually making a divorce is due to lack of ways communicating between 2 lovers.
This is generaly what makes a longevity of a home escalted quickly. There are lots of reasons of unstable family though but commonly is more about communication.

I liked that they didn’t stick with the original ending of them getting back together, because I felt that would’ve given children of divorced parents false hope. Sometimes they get back together but most of the time they don’t. The ending they stuck with was more realistic, bittersweet, and challenging. It helps you realize even though things don’t always happen the way we want them to, we can be okay.

Sally field did a great job in this movie portraying a female divorcee who was clearly very much in love with her husband when they first got married, but as time went on and both people’s priorities changed with age, the initial spark faded and things just got uglier and uglier with disagreements. That’s how many divorces happen in real life and sally was able to capture that perfectly.

It was a fundamental mismatch in values and temperament. She had a stable career and he didn't which led to resentment towards him because she was the main provider, and he was way too laid back and spontaneous whilst she was more organised and liked things to be planned/structured. It's easy to overlook these huge differences in the beginning and when you're young, but they can't be avoided or denied when you're married and have kids. They were just too different.

I understand they grew apart but that doesn’t give her the right to say when the kids want to see there own dad. She was selfish and heavily into her career which is fine but to me she cared more about getting in the bed with a new man than caring about her kids feelings. I find her repulsive. She probably should’ve never had kids or got married if she wanted a career that takes a lot of time away from kids.

It goes both ways if you look at it. They're both at fault in the divorce. Miranda was too much of a strict workaholic while Daniel was more of a "laid back" man child. Back before they were married, I'm pretty sure they were madly in love with each other. But the second kids enter the picture and into your life, it doesn't become about you both anymore. It's about them. Gotta feed them, clothe them, provide for them and prepare them for when they enter your age and have kids of their own. Daniel didn't seem like he wanted to grow up. All he wanted to do was be a pal to the kids, instead of be a parent. Don't get me wrong. It's good for a parent to have fun with their kids, but to do it on a daily basis and be like one of them nonstop, it's unhealthy for their relationships with both their spouse and kids. Miranda, on the other hand, ended up becoming a workaholic to try and provide for the kids herself due to Daniel's carelessness and immature behavior. If you remember in the scene where Miranda and "Mrs. Doubtfire" were having tea and Miranda opened up about the marriage, she stated how "things quit being funny" due to her working all the time, trying to provide for the kids and for Daniel and herself, which she barely got to see the kids and left her with a strained relationship with them. And while Daniel couldn't keep a steady job as he would always "find something wrong with it", whether he has beliefs on it or not. Example: beginning of the film. Miranda even mentioned how she "cried herself to sleep" almost every night due to all the stress she had from work and trying to be the mom she wants to be, due to Daniel not stepping up to the plate and helping her out with helping around the house after a long day at work. If Daniel had done so while he and Miranda were still married, their marriage would have kept going and possibly better than ever. But Daniel throwing a party for chris after Miranda said no due to his grades and him bringing home an entire zoo and other kids trashing his house while he did nothing but join in on all the fun and dance on the table with Chris like a teen, was when Miranda reached her boiling point and snapped. And you gotta admit, when Daniel tried to suggest they go to a family therapist or to give Miranda a vacation with him and the kids to help ease stress off Miranda, she blew him off instantly and wouldn't give it a chance, even though I also agree that Daniel was also doing a shitty job, trying to justify himself. This also could be possible how she mentioned in that same scene how she also possibly tried to talk to Daniel about her problems and the way he acts before the divorce and the Mrs. Doubtfire stint. But Daniel never liked to be serious. He thought life was all fun and games. Would you have done the same thing if your spouse kept behaving like that? But yes, they're both at fault for Miranda being away all the time and being too strict and for Daniel to be too careless and irresponsible. But mainly, during the divorce, for bringing the kids into the middle of it nonstop and using them to get back at each other for it.

Daniel failed to realize that, especially when it came to being a husband/father. Miranda had to everything by herself. Keeping the house in order, preparing the meals, you name it. However when Daniel stepped up after becoming Mrs. Doubtfire, Miranda knew how to be a selfish bitch then. Once the divorce hit everything went downhill.

An absolutely brilliant scene that pulls no punches about the reality of divorce. Miranda’s tears and apology after she realizes that no, she DOESN’T love Daniel any more are heartbreaking. Here is an interesting fact: the original script had Daniel and Miranda getting back together, but Sally Field, Robin Williams, and director Chris Columbus-all of whom are divorcees themselves-petitioned to change it because they were afraid it would give kids false hope about real-life divorces. This movie teaches such a good lesson: if two people are simply incompatible, then it is BETTER for them to separate so they can become better people and, as Mrs. Doubtfire says, better parents if there are children involved. But the pain is still real. Amazing movie.

I hear what you’re saying and I don’t necessarily disagree… but as somewhat of a counterpoint… I do think that there are too many people these days who’re quitting and opting out of marriage way too early. I mean you’re making an oath before all your friends & family (God too if you believe) that is “till death do you part”. And while I do understand that divorce is necessary sometimes. Especially in terms of abusive relationships, obviously! I still can’t help but think that there are many Men & Women who don’t understand that marriage is a responsibility and personal happiness is not always going to be there. The divorce rate being as high as it is kind of proves what I’m talking about…

in theory that could be the case, but I think it's far more true to reality to say that "we just don't love each other anymore" is an excuse. You don't spend every day of your marriage happy, and that was never the fucking point of marriage. Marriage isn't supposed to "make you happy" . Marriage is about having a partner to face both good and bad times with. If something isn't working, you talk it out with them.

Sometimes when people get divorced find that they're better friends than they were married. I think unfortunately when it comes to marriage especially nowadays there's a lot of uncomfortable conversations you need to have with your potential spouse before you walk down the aisle that you do not have like where do you stand on having children where do you stand on religion where do you stand on you know working do you make enough money as the man to be the Sole Provider where the woman can be a stay-at-home mom or a stay-at-home wife if you decide not to have children or a stay-at-home wife if you decide not to have children as the woman do you absolutely want to work do you already have a career in place do you want to keep that sometimes I think people rush into marriage too quickly and unfortunately the statistics I think people rush into marriage don't know what they're getting into and then get into it and they're like what did I do because the statistics of divorce in this country are 52%

I gotta say..I can see where they're both coming from, but watching this as an adult I'm going to have to side with Miranda. I can't imagine how hard it was for her to be working hard to pay the bills and support the family with a husband who is constantly In-between jobs, and then he has the nerve to complain that she's always working or gets home too tired. Then when she gets home earlier to spend time with the kids the house is trashed and she's stuck cleaning up after everyone. And we know Daniel doesn't know how to cook or do laundry (thanks to the deleted scenes) so on top of being the primary breadwinner, Miranda was doing all the cooking and household chores. Seems extremely unfair to Miranda. I can understand why she was so angry and cried herself to sleep most nights.

@@Disneyfan82 Yes, I seriously just sided with her. True she should have waited until after his birthday, but I stand by everything else I said. And that's the whole point of the movie: They both brought out the worst in each other. Miranda and Daniel both needed to learn how to become better parents/people. Miranda needed to learn to not be such a workaholic/so strict and to lighten up and have fun, and Daniel needed to learn how to be a stable father figure/man by holding down a job and learning how to cook, clean, and do laundry. That doesn't change the fact that I still think Miranda got the short end of the stick in their marriage. Daniel was a good dad but a thoughtless and selfish husband.

I'm kinda so-so on this. Yes it's true, it wouldn't kill Daniel to be strict every now and then rather than make the kid's play favorites and yes Miranda shouldn't be so uptight all the time. What I like about this movie is that it's one of the few that manage to convince us that both sides have a point rather than one or the other. The only thing I don't like though and this may lean me more toward's Daniel's side of things was Miranda's smug lawyer. At the end of the film when Daniel makes a passionate plea and it was so good that it pretty much moved Miranda, with the Judge carrying out a sentence stricter than the last one, she was sporting this shit-eating grin while Miranda realized how much she took her side of things too far.

They are both at fault, Miranda is right that she works for so much during her day to make money and help take care of the children because Daniel doesn’t have a full-time career or job himself, she works her hardest and while Daniel does his part as the kids father by making them happy, laugh and have fun, which is good of him, it doesn’t help that Miranda is made out to be the bad guy by raining on the parade but because she is responsible and has rules that she wants the kids but seemingly Daniel to follow the most, Daniel definitely doesn’t mean to upset Miranda and make her feel the way she feels here, he is right to want to try and work things out with Miranda but as Miranda says it’s been 14 years and she’s overwhelmed, of course it wasn’t fair for her to suddenly just say she wanted a divorce, I mean I might be wrong but shouldn’t Daniel have also had the right to agree since he didn’t or shouldn’t they as parents have had a chance to discuss and talk it through before actually going through with it?

Yeah, you wouldn't be happy if you had to work all day and instead of coming to a peaceful quiet home to relax with your spouse making you dinner and a clean home... you come to a noisy place with a donkey and random strangers everywhere. And this doesn't happen just once, but all the time apparently.

I remember the scene where she said"One day, his jokes just stopped being funny..." And then "He never knew but so many nights, I cried myself to sleep."
Always felt the lack of communication led to worse things. Which also led to feeling a lack of love and then overcommitment to their jobs where he got burned out and she liked it better there than home.
I know divorce happens and sometimes it's for the best but there was no communication and she kept it from him. Which makes her dishonest. I'm divorced myself but I communicated to my wife, went to marriage counseling with my wife, did everything I could. Everyone told me she was just using me and leave her, everyone said divorce her, she is awful to you but I actually tried. It wasn't until she admitted she didn't care who I f*cked or who I live with,as long as she gets a paycheck from me and her pain meds.
    Then I divorced her.
In this movie, I just never saw effort from her. Complaining about everything, unfeeling to the husband (until the end), quick to just drop him and find another, eager to take the children from him, always a list of excuses. In the end part, she redeemed herself but I feel she failed the marriage.

She said she tried to talk to him but he didn't took things seriously, even in this scene he tries to avoid talking about their problems, when she says that their problems would be waiting for them he just says they would move, in this case it's not like your divorce it's not that they didn't care about each other but all the pain she had to go through because of him made her stop loving him, it wasn't a misunderstanding

I love analyzing this movie. I know that if I was a working mom like Miranda, and I come home to a house that's trashed with strangers, loud music, and partying when I just want a nice quiet rest and a home cooked meal with my family, and when I try to share my concerns I get yelled at and called uptight......... I'd be sick. Imagine if the genders were reversed.
The only thing Miranda did wrong was not going to counseling. Daniel simply needed to get his act together and the marriage might've been saved, but he waited too late. Notice how happy Miranda was to come to a clean house, kids did homework, and dinner was ready... who wouldn't be relieved to come home to that?

When i was a kid. I felt i understood Sally Field's perspective. But as i get older I sympathized more and more with Robin Williams. Robin/Daniel made mistakes, but to me the first option should never be divorce.
Ive seen as ive aged how mufh divorce has ruined people, society, and perspective on family. To me, Miranda was lucky to have a man who want so prideful to refuse that he made a mistake or was wrong, or how dedicated he was as a father. Issues like these can be worked out.
This isn't an affair or he's gambling or drugs or anything damaging. I think the biggest problem is how easily people give up on their partners. If i ever can get married, i will never give up on my wife. Never.
Hell i wish i had a father that caried visibly as much as Robin Williams in this.
