  • Hotels are open again and Japan is promoting domestic travel, so we took this opportunity to visit our neighboring prefecture of Tochigi! We stayed at a traditional Japanese ryokan that has been renovated with modern features, including brand new amenities and western beds.
    In the next chapter of this adventure, we will ride the irohazaka (alphabet climb) with a switchback for every "letter" of the traditional Japanese alphabet. Please subscribe so that you don't miss it!
    for anyone planning a cycling trip to the Japanese countryside, here is our week-long itinerary:
    day 1 - kiryu, gunma to iizuka-tei in nakagawa/batou, tochigi
    day 2 - exploring the hills and rice fields around nakagawa/batou
    day 3 - batou, tochigi to chuzenji-ko (up the infamous irohazaka)
    day 4 - cycling the hidden gem of oku nikko: the car-free eco line!
    day 5 - chuzenji-ko to takaragawa onsen
    day 6 - exploring local climbs in the vibrant north alps surrounding takaragawa
    day 7 - takarawaga to kiryu, gunma through the incredible backroads of minakami and akagi.

    You can call me Moe - I currently live and ride in Gunma, Japan. My goal is to get more humans on bikes to explore the Japanese countryside. In particular, it's my passion to encourage more women and girls to go out and ride. Whether you're on a mamachari, a cruiser bike, or a road bike, I think cycling is an amazing way to experience the world - healthy for our bodies and the earth. Plus, it's totally fun :)
    I want to inspire international travelers to visit hidden roads, underrated restaurants, and inaka towns when Japan's borders open again. Through my videos, I hope that I'll be able to highlight these off-the-beaten-path places and put them on the map for bike adventurers who visit Japan. If you want to partner with me on this goal, or just wanna go on a ride together, please don't hesitate to DM me on instagram - @moe.cycling

    iizukatei is a cultural property with more than 200 years of history. located in NW Tochigi, it has only recently been renovated into a modern ryokan hotel. it's an incredibly zen and traditional hotel, full of brand new amenities and western bed options - a true gem, deep in the heart of the Japanese countryside! it's a huge plus that they are also bike-friendly and even offer bicycles for their staying guests.

    Thanks so much for the great effort of filming excellent scenery, food and good choice of background music. When i find similar backroads winding up mountains and through forests I feel like I've found gold. I've been to japan 3x and yet to try out a ryokan and you've convinced me it's a very worthwhile experience. Looking forward to the next vlog on a road i cycled last century! :)

    very enjoy watching your video! Wish one day I can do bikepacking in Japan. btw, do you guys speak Japanese? If not, how difficulty it is to communicate with locals in English?

    • @moecycling
      @moecycling  3 года назад

      Thank you very much! We speak some Japanese, and it is very helpful in the countryside. If you want to travel in rural Japan, learning some basic sentences can go a long way. Otherwise, I recommend traveling with a guide!
