Well I absolutely love your engineering skills and your perfectionism, don't forget the commonsense rule of boats. The more systems and gadgets there are, the more potential for breakdowns and failures. That might be the KISS rule too: love your videos!

I would love to have seen the faces of the inspectors of your lost bag - "What the heck is this guy transporting?". I'm shocked you didn't get hit with a import fee. As far as the chart table - "PRETTY DANG SPIFFY", but that is what I've come to expect from you and your incredibly high standards of work! Keep it up Mads!

Hello Mads. I really hope you turned off your notifications for liked videos, as I just went through all uploaded ones and gave them a like (if not, I apologize for about 216 rings). I went through all of them and I enjoyed them all. I keep diary about my sailing adventures since I started and you earned some honourable mentions as the one who opened the 2017 season a bit earlier for me. Your way to present yourself, Jökull, Obelix and now Athena through youtube is one of the pleasant experiences. No swearing (at least in English), so show off, always smiling and super friendly. I am not surprised that you are so popular. Just wanted to say thanks for all your efforts. You will be always welcome in Vienna. As you prefer to address people by their real name, here is mine: Tim

(Off topic) Mads, in a video from Scotland, you filmed Athena from above in a harbour. I just watched it once again and instantly thought: Please, leave her teak deck, or do what you can to keep it! Better an old, weak teak deck than none! Keep on DIYing, I adore your channel. Uwe

Back to the Future, I thought I would leap forward 2 years just to say Hi Mads, I’m half way through your videos, in the year 2015 at the moment, trying hard to catch up, I’m absolutely loving each and every episode. Thank you very much for the enjoyment. I can’t stay long in this time zone I have got to time travel back to 2015.

I think its safe to say Athena's chart table is looking "pretty dang spiffy"!! Thanks for a great video. Its the highlight of my week following your project. It is fantastic that you have maintained the original format for your videos throughout the channel's history. I love the DIY projects and the relaxed and simple format of the videos. No fancy effects or time wasters and thankfully a short intro. Keep up the excellent work and outstanding content! Its high quality and highly informative. Its nice to see a fellow boat owner doing every day boat related tasks such as DC & AC wiring and painting/ varnishing while taking such pride in his work. Its been a pleasure to watch your videos right the start back in August 2013! Your a true Inspiration Mads, Thank You. Morgan, Australia

We missed you Mads, I was standing on the street corner offering money to anyone with a Mads Athena update! you had me worried when you posted on Facebook that the airline lost your bag. I was really afraid that someone had made off with your stuff. Glad you got it back.Sure wish I could have made it up to New York for the meet and greet but just couldn't get there. I saw a quick video that Empty Nest sailing posted of the meet and greet but the video was dark and you couldn't tell who was there or what was going on. The Nav Station looks fantastic! Keep it up.

looks killer man. I wouldn't trust the piano hinge alone myself but to each his own.

  • @patch8462
    @patch8462 7 лет назад

Hey Mads, the viewer who mentioned the hinge not being "strong enough" may have been referring to the fasteners? So it's like this Mads: we cannot insert a threaded fastener parallel to the laminate; meaning the plywood. You are using a 4 ply or 12mm so when you insert the screw "even if pilot is drilled" you force the plies to separate, causing the fasteners to loose grip! You are likely using a #5 or 6 x 5/8" which is correctly scheduled but not for use in ply- unless they are used @ 90* to the ply surface (the face or back)!
If you experience cupping or bowing of the same materials or panels in a month or two, then that would likely be caused by the finish being thicker on one surface (exposed or panel face) this is also common. You will likely notice that the bow of these panels will seem to run with the surface grain.

It would be great if you had cameras up top connected as a video feed to the screen at the chart table. A mast camera, a stern facing camera as well as hull lights and an underwater camera. I see quite a number of shots from these positions made with a Go-Pro on a pole or similar so it might be better if you designed it in from the start. As a further bonus it would be handy to check the horizon from the chart table for example while on watch so you could eat below or make a hot drink if needed.

The lighting is awesome and the nav table is coming together nicely. I have to say though, after several years of sailing my boat, the nav table is now in the landfill. I never used it for anything other than storage and it was taking up valuable space and interfering with access to the fuel tank. I'm happier without it...but your situation may be very different than mine. Keep up the good work and look fwd to seeing Athena progress.

The nav-station is looking good, I would suggest some tabbing to the hull and deck as the sea show's no mercy for equipment not fastened properly. Perhaps some beeswax on the door edge of the dc panel. Ancor, blue seas are good product choices. Note here that I have used SurFlo pressure pumps for over 30yrs--in my present boat I have one but will be replacing it with a new SurFlo! On your cable prchase for the AC system, you might try using 3M colored electrical tapes at each end of your circuits to designate the Euro color coding. ATC fuses are a good choice, used on the last boat and I will be upgrading to them on this boat. My lady really liked your Mood lighting effect on the nav-station--I must now add this to my boat. Good day and think some about visiting Seattle------Mikey

If you don't already know, the new ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council} color code for dc negative is yellow. It has supplanted the age old black due to the potential confusion with ac hot. As long as you're going to use American color coding for your ac, you might want to consider staying up to date with yellow and red for dc negative and positive when it comes to the 12 volt rewire.

So there's no confusion later, the insulation color is VERY IMPORTANT. If you don't use the correct color it will confuse the electrons in the wire and they will inevitably wind up traveling to the wrong location.
Confused electrons are very bad and will misbehave which, I'm sure you know, can be catastrophic on a sailing vessel

Hello, like everytime, very cool video ! You can use a raspberry pi, a bunch of cheap components and lirc to record and play any infrared signal. I used this setup to close automatically our velux at work every night so that rain isn't a problem even if someone forgot to close the window. You could use the same to attach more physical buttons to turn on white and red light at desired brightness. Just record your remote signals, then replay them with a program you can write.

I built a 36' sailboat with a skeg hung rudder. I had the choice to fill the void with foam or polyester resin and chopped glass. I went with resin and chopped glass. Never had a problem in all the years I owned the boat. If you use polyester resin (cheaper than epoxy) be careful with how much catalyst you use. To much catalyst will cause the resin to heat up to much and may cause damage .

Like when you flip one or two switches and the bus that powers all the white lights, turn off, and all the red ones, turn on. Just incase you have to walk through the boat to near the anchor locker at night and you need to keep your night vision .Now that would be pretty Dang Spiffy !

Great stuff. It is really looking good. Here is an idea. What about installing some LED's in such a way where they provide lighting for the breaker panels. I think it would be cool to be able to see the each breaker with out having to use a flash light. It would be awesome if the panel had each breaker description lit up......then you could see at a glance what each breaker is. LOL might be a little to much.

you might want to add a support leg to your DC panel door that will help hold it up when the door is open. The piano hinge can twist if weight is appi O I'd at an angle, the leg would also help keep the door open while at sea if access is needed.
