Convocations, the new instrumental album from Sufjan Stevens, moves like a two-and-a-half-hour electronic/ambient mass for our present age of anxiety and dread; its 49 tracks work through the stages of grief and gladness with emotional mood music that is dreamy, dissonant, vertiginous, rhythmic, repetitive, urgent, and calm-that is, all the things we undergo when we inevitably live through isolation, uncertainty, and loss. Its five sonic cycles (Meditations, Lamentations, Revelations, Celebrations, and Incantations) replicate different stages of mourning, healing and catharsis, working both to soothe our unease while savoring a renewed sense of awe and wonder for being alive in these unprecedented times.
Stevens initiated Convocations in response to (and as an homage to) the life and death of his father, who died in September last year, two days following the release of The Ascension. It is, then, ultimately an album about death, and an album that reflects a year in which we have all lost so much. That said, this is not a personal record, but a universal one. Convocations is built on a shared experience that seeks to be honest about how complicated grief can be in these difficult times-the pain and separation, the anxiety, the unknown, the absolute joy of memory. This is also an album made in lockdown, when we were all cloistered in whatever space we had. Convocations arrives just as we begin to emerge from a year whose losses we will calculate for a lifetime. It is, then, right on time, as we begin to process our grief and try to carry on with it.

I've been listening for nearly 24 hours to this stream and I don't tire of it. It's a gorgeous example of using loss to transcend this reality and tap into the eternal. It represents so many feelings and gives them the opportunity for release and processing....all without conscious heavylifting. More of a somatic release. This is how we are meant to go through life, getting bumps and bruises but still reaching around and helping each other through.
@@ginxxxxx hmmm.....what do you mean?
This is about as ambient as music gets.
This is exactly how I feel when I draw something without thinking of what to draw, just becoming free and open and expressive without any hint of criticism but with all my heart and soul. I am honored to hear this beautiful side of freedom
Yet you are constrained by the two dimensions and the area of whatever you are drawing on; constrained by whatever tool you are drawing with; constrained by your skill level; etc. The illusory nature of freedom is really something to lament about.
I really like those texts in the description about the albums, a nice touch.
Love the visuals. I focus on one part for a while until it dissappears. Then I feel lost for a second after it's gone. Beautiful
I haven't words to describe how makes me feel this music. I'm levitating with all the emotions that I feel while I listen to this. Sufjan Stevens makes music for the souls, he heals the souls. I feel blessed. Thank you so much // No tengo palabras para describir cómo me hace sentir esta música. Estoy levitando con todas las emociones que siento mientras escucho esto. Sufjan Stevens hace música para las almas, sana las almas. Me siento bendecida. Muchas gracias.
He is an art.
Hypnotic between visual and sound. Time to meditate.
Sufjan needs to start scoring movie soundtracks! I don’t usually buy but I would his
1 minute and 40 seconds in and I'm crying tears of deep sadness and tears of pure joy.
Like several others here, I'm finding exactly what I need in this album, like it was made for me. The universality is incredible.
Respect
3:40 - 5:58 Two minutes of levitation with your arms wide open ascending to the white light at the end of the tunnel being welcomed into Heaven. 😭❤❤

These really do feel like thoughts, like sorting something out alone or with a close friend

I really like Sufjan Stevens, but I'm a fan, not an adept ... and I find this terribly lazy and boring.
Do you know what moved him to create this album?
@@cphilips66 yes I know, and I am sorry for him. Nevertheless I do not know him, and it is his choice to make it public. So is mine to like it or not despite the circonstances.
@@ubikii5926 my heart hurts as I wonder what you are going through that it feels like a reasonable choice to criticize the work seeping from someone's pain. You didn't need to write anything but have your feelings quietly and give grace to someone's vulnerability.
I do wish you healing so you can give space and slack to yourself and others....something far to many of us have never been afforded or taught. Putting love into the world is a great place to start....it makes us open and vulnerable, which is necessary for development and growth. Find something that lights you up with joy (and doesn't diminish others) and put you heart into it.
You deserve to burn with love and joy 💜
I dont think you could call this lazy, its pretty nice. and boring, well if you dont like ambient music, thats totally fine
you probably don´t like instrumental music. just say that
