  • Paper cutting is one of my favorite activities for the spring festival as a child. I made these every year in kindergarten and elementary school.
Here's a little info about Chinese paper cutting from Wikipedia - "The art of paper cutting (jiǎnzhǐ 剪纸) in China may date back to the second century CE since paper was invented by Cai Lun in the Eastern Han Dynasty in China. As paper became more affordable, paper-cutting became one of the most important types of Chinese folk art. Later, this art form spread to other parts of the world, with different regions adopting their own cultural styles. Because the cutouts are often used to decorate doors and windows, they are sometimes referred to as chuāng huā (窗花), window flowers or window papercuts. People glued the papercuts to the exterior of windows, so the light from the inside would shine through the negative space of the cutout. Usually, the artworks are made of red paper, as red is associated with festivities and happiness in Chinese culture, but other colors were also used. Normally paper-cutting artwork is used at festivals like Spring Festival, weddings, and childbirth. Papercuts always symbolize luck and happiness."
I used an X-Acto knife instead of scissors because the paper I bought is 150 gsm, thicker than the red paper people use for Chuang Hua. Also, I think it takes some skills and experience to cut intricate patterns using a scissor. It took me around three days to finish. Although I found the entire process therapeutic, it was also kind of nerve-racking because I was afraid of making mistakes. But lucky no mistake happened. I'm a little surprised how smooth it went haha. I have another video coming for the spring festival. Stay tuned. :)
    Love,
    Tina

Thank you for giving some background on this technique in the description. You said it takes skill and experience cutting intricate pieces with scissors but I promise you using an exacto knife takes skill and experience too. I would have made so many wrong slices... It sure turned out pretty...🥰
