The Mac Pro 5,1 will be obsolete in 2024 (for me, anyway)

  • Oh and for the record, I don't talk about the later Mac Pros for the following reasons...
2013 (6,1): GPU solutions are pricey, CPUs weak these days, thermal performance ropey.
2019 (7,1): Paying $3000 for a machine going on 5 years old is genuinely outrageous, it'll likely never see an OS later than Sonoma unless you use Windows.

Honestly, we were told that these machines were becoming obsolete about a decade ago. Depending on what kind of work (or play) you’re doing, these machines can keep going and going indefinitely. If higher performance is an issue, then of course, get a new Apple M series. Otherwise, keep them rolling ‘til the end of the decade (or beyond) and stick it to the planned-obsolescence man!

I have a 5,1 I just got a few months ago. I am running Monterey fully updated with OCLP and an RX 5700 XT, dual X5690, and 96 GB of RAM. I haven't noticed any of these slow downs, although I only use the machine for learning blender, listening to Spotify, watching movies, and a bit of hobby programming. I don't use it for gaming because I have a gaming PC. I have run Ubuntu before and it works very well.
That being said, Monterey is probably the last version of macOS that I will run on this machine, since it is the last that works on Intel without AVX. Soon this will become a Linux Only machine.

Better day to day use is one thing, but the real power tasks more often get slowed down by the older parts, as opposed to the operating system, and either must be run on Windows/MacOS.

...and of course you can still keep the 5,1 running alongside whatever else you go for. I'm in a similar 5,1 situation and I even still run on 10.13.6 purely because the other Macs in my setup are all on the same OS but mainly because I refuse to pay Adobe a monthly subscription for software I've already bought. Eventually I'll have to upgrade to some form of silicone Mac although the 5,1 runs FCPX edits buttery smooth at 1080. It's purely the non supported web browsers and Apps that that are really curtailing it's continued use. Hey ho!

I've been using my 5,1 heavily for photo editing until about 2 years ago, now it's mostly my backup and data machine.
But it runs very very well under Monterey. I don't have any of those stutters you're showing. I have a 12 core, that's the only thing I could think of?
That machine is still pretty powerful, most of the time it will be idle at 2% CPU usage and never swaps because of the big amounts of RAM.
Really, I have no idea which Mac to get as a replacement. There just is real successor. No newer Mac can even hold a single hard drive, get me 64 GB of RAM or 1-2 TB of NVME without selling my kidney. I'm holding on to it for a while.

I’m still making old mac content as that’s my channel’s main focus lol.
I think it depends what you’re using it for. Gaming and lighter stuff like Photoshop or 1080p video editing works fine for the next couple of years.
This thing isn’t old, so it still offers great value for money. It’s definitely not new, though. Make sure you boot from an SSD otherwise it’ll be super slow.
If you wanna have a machine that’s less old, I’d recommend buying a used office PC, then putting a dedicated GPU like the RX 480 or something inside. It’ll make for a decent 5,1 competitor at a similar price.

I'm running Ventura on my 2010 mac, using OpenCore, in spite of that fact that people who know a lot more than I recommend stopping at Monterey. (I also have run Big Sur with no issues.)
HOWEVER, my 2010 computer runs better with Ventura (i.e., faster) than with any other operating system, going back to Mojave and before. It also runs reliably, with no hiccups. Sonoma, on the other hand, runs a little slower and offers no advantages, that I find valuable, over Ventura.
If I didn't know better, I would think that my machine was designed with Ventura in mind. I'm that happy with it.

😮OMG! You have the same random spinning ball problem as I do! God! I am not alone!! I have the same configuration: Mac Pro 5.1 and RX6600XT... Martin Lo Open Core and Monterey... The same frustrating problem, with the same cause as you mentioned: it gets laggy with a random color wheel... or sometimes even without coming out of sleep... just by starting Safari, for example. I tried many things, but have no idea where it comes from. Recently, I completely reinstalled Open Core, disabled SIP, blessed, etc., and it seems to me that the problem occurs much less frequently now. It's hard to say, as I don't use the Mac Pro under macOS too often. It's more of a Windows gaming machine at the moment... and shows absolutely zero issues running Windows... (yes, it's a Mac). This problem drives me nuts when I encounter it. Do you know where it comes from? I would have already bought a new Mac if the Windows side wasn't working so well.
I know someone in the Facebook group 'Mac Pro Upgrade' has the same issue as well. I will share your video with him. As for the future, I plan to wait for a refurbished M3 Max... So I have some time ahead of me. But I agree with you. The 2019 Mac Pro is a dead end. It's time to switch to M-series Macs. On the laptop side, I'm using a trusty 2015 MacBook Pro... It's starting to show its age. A bit slow when connected to an external display and forget about recent gaming...

Since MacOS Monterey is 3 OSes newer than the 5,1’s last native update (Mojave), I won’t be surprised if the spinning rainbow ball happens because of a process happening that the old processors and memory weren’t designed to handle.

That means they should be supported for at least another 3 OSX versions and then for 2 years after that since apple maintains the most recent 3 versions of OSX. So that’s 5 years at least

Compared to the 5,1, the Z440 has double the CPU Geekbench score, PCIe 3.0 vs. 2.0 (2x the bandwidth), 2133 MT/s vs 1333 MT/s. Still, it bottlenecks the RX6800.
I also was given a 2018 MacBook Pro as ewaste. Turns out, disabling graphic switching solves its display freezing problem so this has become my main MacOS machine. I still use the 5,1 from time to time, though, just because I like it.

There are a couple things of upgrades you can do, to further speed up your system. #1 You should absolutely use a 2-slot GPU in order to free up you PCIe slot directly above the GPU. This is the slot where your NVME drive needs to go. Yours is in slot 3 and can't perform its max potential. Sell your GPU and go for a AMD 6800 dual slot card and put a pixlas mod in to run it. This way your SSD can finally perform as expected. If you can, look for AMD RADEON Pro GPUs such as the W5700 with those blue shrouds.

    • @montaguebarnabasltd
      @montaguebarnabasltd  5 месяцев назад

Not trying to knock your advice as it does seem helpful, but I feel like there’s a couple of reasons this won’t work for most.
      1. Don’t you mean I should use a single slot card? Mine is 2 slot currently, and covers almost #1 and #2.
      2. While you’re right that a 16x slot would offer better performance, I don’t think it would make my Mac any more useable. I’ve got problems where it will just freeze doing a task in iMovie, for example. The 4X slot already offers roughly 1300mb/s read/write speeds. 16x MAY boost that up to 2700, but that depends on my drive being RAID configured as far as I can tell. I’ll move it to the 16x slot since there’s a tiny space for it at the moment and see what happens, though!
      3. Unfortunately there’s no way I could sensibly look for a £400-500 graphics card just to fit better in my 14 year old computer. I would avoid the AMD Pro cards, too, as once we have to retire the 5,1s, having a small form factor GPU with not the greatest value for money might be wasted rather in whichever machine becomes the daily driver next.
My 6600XT already presents the CPU in my Mac with a bottleneck in games from 2018.
I’d be the last to mention this normally, but one must remember the day is fast approaching where the 5,1’s DDR3 RAM and decade old Xeons aren’t going to cut it for getting work done, even with workarounds for newer storage and graphics cards.
Thanks for the comment, and I appreciate your time nonetheless ❤️

    • @Guanaalex
      @Guanaalex 5 месяцев назад +1

@@montaguebarnabasltd Well I agree that everything that is technically possible might not be economical, depending on your unique usage. Moving your NVME drive to slot #2 will help somewhat. The real bonus manifests when you use at least a PCIe dual adapter card (bridge card) such as the AbleConn Dual NVME M.2 SSDs Carrier Adapter to use double ssd speed. I/O crest and Higpoint (4x) worked great for many of us as well, but you want a small card not to obstruct your gpu fan too much. I do not recommend Raid, since it is tech from decades ago. You only benefit from Raid if you use hardware adapter cards, the software Raid may help for safety but not much for speed.
When it comes to GPUs, I also agree. If you are not planing to migrate to a MacPro 7.1, it is useless to invest in a PRO GPU now. And that is the problem, all of us MP5.1 users have. The MP7.1 is already too old and still to pricy to make it reasonable to jump the boat. My strategy is to stretch the MP5.1 usage for another 2 years and jump on a 7.1 in 2026. But then, I am not a professional user, just an enthusiast when it comes to the 5.1.

Modern CPUs from Intel (the i7 13th gen for example) tend to have roughly 8 power cores, and they cope just fine with far tougher stuff than any 5,1 one.

Having said that, this video is fabulous in that you are showing us how to keep our old Mac Pros useful and not be relegated to the trash heap. And I’d never Windows game on my Mac Pro. I have a dedicated Windows gaming machine for that with a 3080ti GPU which is still good in 2023 for everything except ray tracing. And I did a power test on my M1 Mac Mini the other day, and as you say in this video, it’s ridiculous how little power it uses. My M1 Mini uses around 12-14 watts sitting idle, and under full CPU load it only goes up to 40-60 watts max! That’s rediculous when considering that my windows gaming machine uses around 300 watts idle and up to 700-800watts under full load. 😂 And for me the final and best selling point for the M1 Mac Mini is it runs dead silent!
