Very common, actually, among reputable mapmakers. Even up to recent days, like Rand McNally Atlases, had towns that did not exist to check for copycats.

I never tire of google maps. I found a whale off the west coast and posted it on Reddit. People loved it as its so hard to find a whale on the maps given they are usually deep down. This one was just off the coast and near the top of the water.
in 2014 I remember surfing google maps late at night and found a place in central Nevada where they were building some sort of bunker. There was massive earthworks piles and these giant concrete areas poured. I remember showing to my other coworkers that night and even a few folks the next day. After that it was just gone. Either the next satellite update it was completed or they scrubbed it.

Look at the infamous E.J. island little st james between the years of 2000-2008 ... You will see a bunch of dug holes that look like grave sites and a year where the island is covered by clouds completely

09:15 minutes marker - that " mirage" island guess does disservice to cartographers of past . Warming temps over past 250 years render many ,formerly sand bar or ' almost islands' ,these days , completely gone. Rising water levels constantly change earth.

you can zoom right in on the parcel islands and you can clearly see several military installments surrounded by high walls and watch towers, plenty og big ships in the area too
When I was stationed at Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland, when Russian or other Satellite's were over the area we had to place canvas tarps over sensitive items
I followed along with this on google earth, and you can see Amchitka Island on there just fine. You can make out the old airstrips, roads and other structures. It’s not all blurred out.

Chicago has a blacksite in homan Square(different kind of blacksite).
I was never stationed there but knew people who were at the island in the alution Islands. It is part of the NORAD network.
I have worked there.. the Aleutian islands one is a decommissioned NIKE missile base that is now owned and operated by Raytheon for R&D. Its also an entrance point for one of the many D.U.M.B.S worldwide 😁

Better compare Dragon hole to the well Montezuma NPS Arizona. Its actually had research and continues down under the actual well.

Islands and towns were added to maps to catch people who would copy maps and say they were their maps , early copy right protection
Historically some maps would have fake places/locations as a type of proto-copyright of sorts. Jay Foreman has a video on that.
I'm always mixed on these things. Whlie obviously governments can ask for things to be blocked/blurred, any person can also ask the same. My aunt and uncle has Google blur their house on the map. I seen a group of people on Reddit who got some random chunk of land in Brazil blurred just for fun. So it's usually hard to tell why something is blurred. Goverment related? Privsate property? Just some people goofing around? If you go to France (if I recall), ALOT of things are blurred in the cities. Though about half of the blurred stuff appears to be rich peoples esates as their are still names above blurred land.

Janette Island is more than likely, as it said, a missile base and seeing as it is an island more than likely a submarine base as well. The 'tug-of-war' situation between the United States and Russia is each country constantly placing missiles closer and closer to each other for faster strikes. When your average person thinks about a missile going to either country they think East and West when in reality they would be firing North. If Russia or the United States fires a missile at each other it will go North so Russia planting a missile base on a tiny island in the North is likely the cause.
However, yes. It should not only be made public who asks Google to block out places on maps but their "reason" should be as well -- even if it will likely be a lie. Furthermore it should be made public if these interests paid Google to do so. For example if you see a bunch of places that are known Military bases blocked out and see they were paid to block it; understandable. If you see a location reason blocked for "Historical Significance" but someone like China paid twenty-five million to have it blocked; somethings wrong there!

There are other reasons to, "black" a photo it the satellite caught something it wasn't supposed to be seen. The odd submarine, surface vessel or aircraft.
