Growing up the plural was Octopi, google says Octopuses is now acceptable lol. The slow erosion of education continues to pick up pace.

This usually depends on whether said thing existed as a Latin word to begin with. Takes viruses. It's not virii because they didn't know they existed. I don't think this applies to the octopus but I'm not sure.

I would say the way Mr Boyd is using the same word for singular and plural is the correct way in this case.

I still say octopi. Octopuses just sounds ridiculous LOL

Most male octopi do not pass on immediately. They separate their member from their body upon completion. The combination of orgasm, adrenaline, and a plethora of other physiological post coitus hormonal releases cause the male octopus to either pass very quickly, or can take hours as they swim, or at least move in abnormal ways until exhaustion or a form of overdose from the over release of varied cocktails causes their demise.

      @ilongfordarkness 21 день назад

Also from what I'm reading, man now on a rabbit hole; they release hormones after mating that makes them stop eating. In the females it makes them stop eating other stuff, cover their eggs and start eating themselves to stay alive long enough for the eggs to hatch. The eggs apparently need oxygen blown out across them the whole time so the mother can't leave to hunt. This all leads to the reminder one article said: evolution doesn't care about what's a "nice" solution to the reproduction problem just one that works. Once it works those that do it survive those that don't don't. Aka it "just is".

It has been observed that the offspring retain the memory of their parents. Remember the diver who had an octopus friend? The babies knew him.

Great topic! Anyone interested in this should watch "My Octopus Teacher" documentary by a professional photographer who got burnt out on the pace of his job and took off for one year to relax and skin dive of the coast of Africa and ended up befriending an octopus. He followed and studied it every day for one year. The personality, behaviors, creativity and intelligence of this octopus was unbelievable. Fantastic narration that makes you to think about life. Great job of things never before caught on video. Highly recommended!

I always felt bad for octopus because it feels like evolution or nature is trying everything to get rid of them.

Though they are seperate intelligent individuals they act as a single organism.
For the survival of their species, their instinct is to live a solitary life but they are all drawn to finish their life cycle and reproduce. Nature is strange.
We all want to live when it comes down to it. But we have dominion over the earth and all its crestures we too desire to reproduce and are pulled in by the females daintiness and feminine Beauty. We desire them. I will not go as far to say that they do not like mating they are intelligent but for them..their instinct is primary even at all costs.
They live through their offspring like a huve of bees or an army of ants.
.they will sacrifice their self for the betterment of the whole group.
Again they act as a single organism
    Another great video bro.
    thanx

09:38 - It's called instinct, and we have it too. We want to prolong our species. If they don't, they will become extinct.
Their life expectancy is short anyway. The female has the worst. She has to watch without food and protect her unhatched babies. This is the ultimate sacrifice. She protects them until she dies. Like those monks who meditate all their lives until they die and turn to stone.
    ----------------
Dude was a bit unprepared for the video. Octopuses are cephalopods and therefore have heads and legs. The tentacles have squid. Yes, all your fetishes about Japanese animation are in ruins. There are no tentacles there.
