If you want no grey you need permanent dye. I just get a root touch up box and apply to the half inch regrowth once a month on parting hairline. Once every few months I will do a full box on all the roots and pull it through the rest for the last five minutes. If I want to tone I use a gloss. Colour wow powder on the parting covers the tiny regrowth I get after a fortnight.
I used to get highlights but that still left some silver showing. The bleach was also very damaging.

Thanks Craig great explanation on grey hair. I use Wella and love colour touch and colour fresh masks. Affinage is a big selling brand near me and I've had good feedback from clients using their hot shotz masks (similar to colour fresh), 1 client uses it in between permanent colours and it blends the grey regrowth a treat! Sometimes though, they might affect the result of doing the roots with a permanent colour as it might cause banding.

So glad I found your video, Craig! It’s SO helpful!
I’ve been using permanent hair colour (a couple of levels lighter than my natural colour) by eSalon for a few years now to cover my greys, but my curly hair - already quite dry - has gone even drier and the ends don’t curl as much as they used to. My hairdresser suggested I try a demi-permanent colour, stating that it’ll be less damaging and I’d like to give it a try.
In this video you mentioned that to blend greys with demi-permanent colour, the resulting colour will be neutral-warm. Following a colour analysis session, I’ve been told I’m a soft summer. Considering that my natural colour is a light ashy brown, do you think it’s possible to get close to it using demi-permanent colour with a view to blending my greys? Also, does demi-permanent colour tend to get brassy as it fades, the way (dark) blond permanent colour does, and if so, what can be done to minimise this without using a blue/violet toner? (Toners tend to dry out my hair!) Hope my questions makes sense. Thanks!

    • @theworldofcraig
      @theworldofcraig  19 часов назад +1

So glad it was helpful, that’s great!
It’s tricky to get a neutral/ashy result - they rely on some warmth to blend, as I mention in the video it’s about less energy/warmer pigment.
They generally don’t “expose” warmth as they fade because you haven’t lifted the natural base, only deposited - results will vary brand to brand.

I have been blending my grays for years. I am a natural level 3 but the sun has always stripped and exposed the red underlying pigment so it generally looks like a level 4, and I am under 25 percent gray. I always loved that reddish tone so now I enhance it. I however use a permanent color blend (4N with a little bit of 5R) with 10 volume developer at the roots, and then a 6C with a 5 volume to glaze the mids and ends. The result looks like multidimensional baby highlights with a reflective red tone. In between I use a direct dye toner to refresh the color because my grays lose pigment easily. I don't know what I will change to when I get more grays 🙂

@@theworldofcraig Indeed. A demi-permanent would fade out of my hair so fast which is why I use permanent with a low volume. It does slightly shift my natural base but I also want that to lightly intensify the red tone.

So, for example, 7NB (more than half, my greys are coming in pretty good now), cap 8N, cap 7VB! I would have thought the VB will take care of any warmth (the shade is good for me) ? Would LOVE for you (and my apologies if you have as I did look and didn’t see it😢) to cover some grey ANYTHING for men……from your Moustache to Goatee to the back of a head that is “spotted” and not equally colored and HOW to make it so……
For example, I do cut my Husbands hair (as I used to “cut” my Grandfather’s and my Daddy’s Hair before he passed so I have definitely gained my husband’s trust insofar as my limited skill set in cutting and styling his hair as he is fussy one! LOL!) and I use an electric razor to trim from the back to approx just above the ears…..I use a #2 at the back and then slowly “fade?” It to a #2-3 until I get to the top of the ears and THEN I pull out the shears (GOOD$$$ONE$ LOL) and find my “guideline” and follow it for the ensuring that there isn’t ANY OBVIOUS LINE from the back of the head to the top of the head…..I have it down to a science! He has yet to complain and his buddies have asked who does his hair and are they taking new clients ROFL! Sooooo I MUST be doing something right. BUT to get him to even use a tad of purple conditioner for even a minute or two just to brighten up his silver a bit which would be fabulous. He is strictly AGAINST MEN USING ANY COLOR on their hair…..so if you did have the urge to do a vid that covers that on men….gray shading….showing the before and after etc as well as the “WHY” a man should not be afraid but want to do it just to give them a shine! Just even to show how touching up some of the areas that are part of a goatee that are black and then that silver fox that really need to blend or he is going to start to look like a Zebra!
Just ANY before and afters of men who have had you do the blending on them as well as the fact that you are not going from Silver FOX to SKUNK would be a bonus. I really feel he is afraid of ANYONE making him look like that “Ron Popeil” Spray on hair look. YIKES!!!!
He is NOT bald, his hair is so close to yours actually! That gorgeous SILVER FOX (of course I have not really SEEN the back of your head to compare!) but to just have him TRUST me to use a semi/demi to even it out at the back color wise vs looking like he “spray painted” or used “shoe polish” on his head as he has said far far tooo often.
OHHHHH I WOULD OWE YOU MY LIFE LONG GRATITUDE CRAIG❤❤❤❤❤❤!!!!
I do NOT touch anyone else’s hair, nor would I, and the ONLY reason I started to do his was the “Plandemic” as it is being known as now…..yikes….and of course men suffered right along with us so the struggle was REAL!!!!
If you do decide to do a men’s vid on tackling the “grey shade” vs “GETTING SHADE FOR YOUR GREY” it would be fantastic and I really can’t be the ONLY ONE out here doing their husbands hair can I?????
I’ve even told him to GO BACK TO YOUR “OLD” Stylist and see what SHE SAYS as I am not blind and I KNOW WHAT I SEE IS REAL so…….. she MUST have “ideas” as she IS THE REAL PROFESSIONAL, NOT ME!!! However, he says no, he loves how I do it and he gets a lot of compliments so “why fix it if it isn’t;t broken”……..OH YOU LEO’S WILL BE THE DEATH OF ME!!!! LOL!!!!
Alrighty Sir Craig, there is my whining for the day……truly filled with a challenge for you. I’ve not even LOOKED for or at anyone else on here because you always cover the best ideas and angles as well as the why and when, BETTER THAN ANYONE so as my hubby said “Why fix it if it isn’t broken!”. It is hard to step away when you’ve spoiled us as if would feel like cheating on you as well as getting bad ideas…..it just FEELS WRONG!!!!
One must stick with their “gut” and that is what I am doing……starting at the top (Ohhhhhh PUNNNY!!!!!).
Thank you regardless of tackling suck a HUGE task as it IS! A HUGE TASK and ENORMOUS ASK!!!! ANYTHING you do (even a short) would be one filled with a ton of knowledge that could help push him over to MY LOGICAL SIDE at the very least…..well, one could hope……..🙏🏻
Much love and humility from another fan from 🇨🇦!!! You are just so great at explaining the why and how and when to those of us with next to NO knowledge of your very technical world which is a HUGE skill set unto itself! Thank you and don’t ever stop being YOU! ❤❤❤❤❤❤

A full head of beautiful white hair looks absolutely stunning. My mother has that. The problem for me is when grey is only in certain parts of the hair and it does not look great when it’s so patchy. I tired bleaching my hair and blending it that way. It did not work so I have dyed it again. Annoying.

It helps me enormously to know the formulas you mentioned here and to understand the coloring, as I struggle with, how much of what to put into the formulations when hair is lightened to a level 9-ish and needs to be glossed on the level or down a notch.. I’d love to see an hair science video on the NB vs NW GB series and V, VB, N, NA and kickers and pastels would help to understand better in order to formulate. Background color and hence results like for example. I hope I managed to explain it here comprehensively enough.

Oh I wish I had seen you two months ago! My last color appointment was December 2019, and I was surprised to see how gray I was underneath it all. (I'm normally dark brown.) But i managed the grow out and it looked good for a couple years. But recently I felt like I was looking too old with my 70% gray. (In my late 50s.)
So, on impulse in Walmart one day, I picked up Clairol Natural Instincts 6G vegan color that says "washes away gradually." I wanted to get at least a medium brown so it would blend with gray. Well, it was awful. It looked orange or rust colored and I hated it.
It's been 54 days though and looks much better as it has faded. I calculate that I've washed it about 22 times since the color. I don't know why I thought it would wash out in 28 -- it doesn't mention that on the box but I must've seen that on other boxes at the store while I was choosing which to use. Evidently I was so desperate at the moment that I chose the 6G just because it was in stock -- I would've preferred the one defined as "ash" colored but it was out of stock.
This is not the first time my impulsivity has gotten me into trouble. I am grateful this is growing out and will be more careful next time.
When do you think it would be safe to try another semi-permanent color? Should I wait until it appears completely washed out? Or wait for a specific amount of time or number of shampoos?
It is so confusing but with following your channel and watching more, I hope to get better results next time.
Thank you so much, especially if you read all this! 😊

    • @theworldofcraig
      @theworldofcraig  3 дня назад +1

Awww, well I’m glad you have now!
The G in the colour you selected would have become quite vibrant on the grey hair - they are quite translucent, (there is a video about them on my channel) stick to N for less warmth.
How long they last is down to the head of hair…but they will never wash out completely.
That’s a tricky one for me to answer remotely.
If you went for 6N, I would only apply to the root - then take it through to the ends after half the processing time perhaps, to tone the already coloured hair.
