I've struggled numerous times to install inserts on all of my bikes, and from all of that pain and suffering I bring you the best way to install CushCore inserts. I've watched the "How To" videos and they often use crafty techniques and props like garbage cans to get the inserts installed. Have no fear, I bring you a very simple, no bs way to get those inserts installed in no time!
#CushCore #HowTo
After watching this I actually feel comfortable doing this!! Thanks so much for posting this! 8)
No problem, happy to help!
Great video and comments below too! I have installed many Bib-Moose on dirt-bikes. I will be attempting my first MTB Cush Core install tonight! Thanks for the instruction!
Good luck, should be pretty easy if you just have patience. I often find myself trying to rush an install and it just ends up taking waaaaaay longer.
Great tutorial. Struggled with my first wheel. Watched your vid and did the second wheel in 5 mins, thank you 👍
That's the goal! Glad it helped!
I was dreading putting on my cushcore but I followed your method and it worked first time! Took about 10mins. Good stuff 👍
That's the best compliment I could ever get! Glad it helped!
They were not hard to install after watching this video! I'm excited to see what all the hype is about, thank you
Welcome to the party!
Thanks for this video. I followed your steps on my first cushcore install and it was a breeze! it was actually easy enough that I didn't use a single tool. I'd say an additional 5-10 minutes per tire.
No worries brother! I was really frustrated until I figured out the tricks. I'm glad they helped you!
Awesome tutorial,.. just put 2 fresh tires on in 30 minutes with cushcore, my first attempt,... thank you !!
Glad to be of service.
Hey Raul rott in the hot place...
This is exactly what I do, I was doing that before this video and I can tell that this man is totally right! The key point is really to slide the tire under the insert in the center channel of the rim...
Regarding the issue with new tire, the problem is that the tire is not holding on the rim so it is difficult because you have one hand to hold the tire and the other to make your way Arround the wheel... New tires always want to pop off... So what you can do is place the tire and attach it with a zip tie! This way you have both hands to go around the rest of the wheel :)
I've never had to do the zip tie trick since once you get the bead underneath the cush core it olds it in place really well. But not all tire/rim combos behave the same for sure.
@@SingleTrackSurgeon I use rimpact and it is less "tight" on the rim compared to the cushcore, also michelin tires really want to "pop" off ^^, as you said there is plenty of possible combos...
Yeah, one of my favorite features of the cushcore is the downwards pressure that holds the bead in place.
I’ve never been able to seat a regular tubeless tire as easily as this video made it look - the last few inches are way harder to get over the rim in my experience
It's all about patience and not being afraid to go the other direction and keep pushing the bead into the channel.
Awesome vid! I just installed Cushcore on both tires with the help of this video. First tire was cake. 29-2.6 maxxis assegai. Second tire was the biggest pain in my ***. 29-2.4 maxxis dhr DD. Cranking on the tire levers as hard as I did made me concerned I would bend my new rim D: After shoving the tire as deep into the center dip as I could and using a plastic tire lever in the center of the bead that was still outside the rim, I managed to get it set with only some scraped up decals. This is probably the worst case scenario for putting in Cushcore, and I wouldn't recommend... But if you're like me and don't want to replace a $100 tire, it can work. Also, I had to use AirShot's 1.5L tire inflator bc I didn't have a compressor. Happy shredding!
One quick tip, if you let the tire warm up a bit outside it can make the job a tad easier.
Thanks for this! Managed to finish my rear after getting frustrated with the CushCore official video. My hands and forearms are too sore to do my front tonight… but soon! 😂
Did you get the front on?
@@SingleTrackSurgeon Not yet. I am confident that I can, but I have a thumb injury that is easily re-aggravated so I'm waiting until a buddy comes over and wants to use their big strong manly hands 😁
That works 🤣🤣🤣
Great video that really helped me get it done.
Glad it helped
This worked perfectly on a Rimpact Pro as well. Thx! I believe they are just as good and a lot lighter.
Protection may be similar, however the cornering support just isn't there for rimpact pro.
@@SingleTrackSurgeon With the Pro version I experienced a big improvement in cornering support and in high speed singletrack stability. These are also a lot easier to install/remove than the cushcores.
Goated video, just set up brand new double down on a brand new rim with brand new Cush core first try only watching this twice
Nice work! Glad to be of help!
Hi! Will Cush Core will work with Reserve Fillmore valves? Thanks!
Most likely yes, but due to the mechanism of pushing down to have the bottom open up it may make it difficult to get adequate inflation. I still would stick with the cushcore valves IMO.
What were the tyre levers you were using? Good video by the way helped loads
Pedro's 🤘🏼
Why not insert the sealant through the vent after seating the beads? It would allow accidental spray if the bead is not set properly when you start adding air with a compressor.
Anytime you add sealant through the valve you run the risk of ruining your valves.
@@SingleTrackSurgeon When you remove the core of presta valve and use silicon pipe to insert the sealant, how can you damage the valve?
Anytime you inject a sealant through a de-cored valve you get a ton of sealant in the threads of the valve. When you screw that bad boy back in many times you won't be getting that core back out again.
@@SingleTrackSurgeon Cannot you just use thin enough silicon tube to go past the threads within the tube?
late to the show but it's a great video, gonna give Cush a try and your vid will help.
Thank you so much! Let me know how it goes.
Of course I went with new tires and struggled! Great video!
If you are patient, you can get them on just as easy. Just takes a couple more rounds back and forth to get them on.
How much Stan's do you put in the tire?
Depends on the size of the tire, but usually at least two of those mini Stan's mini bottles. To be honest, I just eyeball it these days I've done so many tire swaps.
That was a awesome vid. Was so helpful. Took no time or real effort at all. It's harder to get a minion DD on my stans flow rim.
Different combinations are harder, but slow and steady wins everytime!
My chameleon shipped with sealant in the tires new out of box only had like 2 psi though
I don't think they are supposed to ship with sealant, ever. Unless you got it used, then somebody shipped with sealant without knowing.
The valve ports are supposed to perpendicular to the tire. Then when you install the cushcore, the reliefs (there are two on spots on the cushcore) are suppose to sit on the valve.
Maybe I didn't explain it well enough in the video, but yes the two relief valves face the sidewall of the tire.
Id recommend Stans Race Sealant. Works 10 times better than the regular stuff. Just when using it don't inject through the valve as it will literally seal it. Pour into tire like you did even if ur not using a tire insert.
Interesting, I'll check that out! I never inject through the valve. I think it is nearly impossible to avoid completely clogging up the valve.
Thanks. I have a bit of a wobble after installing Cush Core. Will this work itself out as the core seats better, or is something wrong?
I also have a wobble. It did not get any better until I sliced the tire :-] hope this helps! :D
My only advice is to inflate the tire up to 60 psi to rule out that the tire just hasn't seated properly. Assuming the tubeless tape can handle 60 psi.
Inflating to 40-60 PSI can usually do the trick (assuming you do this at the time of installation) Sometimes the edge of the bead can be sticky, and I've seen people put a small bit of soapy water on the edge of the rim when they first inflate the tire. But I'm sorry to say, that sometimes you just get a tire that isn't perfect.
This is why I always brush some soapy water on the bead just before I inflate
Hi, what is the width of your rims and the size of your tires in this video....? thank you
30 internal width, 2.6 front and rear. But I can do the swap just as fast with 2.5 / 2.3 setups on my race bike with a 29 internal width.
How do you like the Rekons? Great video
Fast rolling, but pretty wobbly at speed. I more of a Highroller II kind of guy if I'm riding locally. Then Dissector or DHR II if I'm riding more slippery terrain. All MaxxGrip, DD Casing, ALL THE TIME! And for races I switch over to DH casing. :D
Do you still need rim tape? or does the CushCore act as the rim tape?
Yes you do still need to run rim tape.
can't install with a no tubeless ready rims? if we use rim tape will not work?
Rim has to be capable of tubeless for it to work.
I've just seen the local pricing on these inserts, man they are taking the piss.
Considering how long they last, and the ride improvement they provide it's a pretty good deal imo
So what about DH or DD tires? Cause everyone must be using thin walled tires to be able to stretch it like that. DH casings are way tougher and it’s not seating. Just keeps popping off the rim while I go around.
I use both DH and DD tires during race season and I never have an issue. The trick is to really get that one side DEEEEEEP in the well of the rim. Take your time and really get that bead underneath the cush core before even starting to seat the other side.
@@SingleTrackSurgeon Thanks for the response! I tried getting the one side deep in the well but it just doesn't seem to want to set all the way around. It keeps popping out of the rim whenever I get to about 15 inches of tire left. I'll try it again with maybe a clamp or zip ties cause no matter, the tire does not like to stay in the well.
@@Cyndicatedj As you start to seat the final side, don't be afraid to go back and forth. I usually go all the way to the edge, the go back across pushing the new side into the well to meet the other on the opposite side. It may be tedious sometimes depending on the rim / tire combination you are using but going slow always beats trying to muscle that final side in.
I’ve actually installed cushcore with half the tire beaded so it’s possible and helps when the tire doesn’t seal
If that's an old Core you might need to replace it. It should be pretty tight to the rim.
Did you have any issues with the valve playing nicely with your rim? I'm using the same rims and the valve area is giving me grief.
The valve area can always be tricky depending on which valve you are using. One tip I can give you is don't over tighten the valve retaining screw. Get it nice and snug to let the rubber seal do its job.
Well the first wheel took me 1 hour. The second was 30 minutes long. This was my first time on a 27.5 DH bike.
So the next one should take 15 minutes!
Why can't you use the valve core to put sealant in?
Because they focus the air perpendicular to the valve opening, I wouldn't recommend adding the sealant through the valve stem for that reason.
Can i install that on 27.5x2.3 size tire
No problem, I often use a 2.3 in the rear for faster rolling speeds. I probably wouldn't go much smaller than that though because the lateral pressure on the cushcore will lift the insert out of the slot that helps stabilize the tire. And that's one of my favorite benefits that they provide.
how did you get the different color valves?
The Chainmax Cush core sells them as a set on their website
Easy to get em, just have to order them.
precisely...
How long does cushcore last before it needs replacement?
I've had mine in a full season without needing to replace them.
Cushcore recommends that when they don't form a tight fit over the rim they need to be replaced. Since once they reach that point, they don't assist as much with cornering stability.
One thing I didn't add in the review or the installation video is how much they prevent tire wear and tear. Obviously you won't be cutting slits in your tires as often, but the actual tire wear is drastically delayed. I'm getting nearly twice as much mileage out of a set of tires. And with four tire changes on this set of inserts I've probably saved around $300 in tires alone.
Thanks great info
Glad it was helpful!
6:50 so, install new tires and unintall later to save ~20 minutes than spend 30 minutes to uninstall & install. so spend more time to save same effort and do tire stuff twice. cool idea! :)
It's not a necessary step, but if you get a bike with tires mounted it is worth it to put a couple rides on them. Most of my tires are DH casing and trying to muscle them fresh with CushCore first try is really not that fun.
Boom, roasted.
So once Cushcore is installed, every time I replace my tire I’m supposed to remove my existing tire and Cushcore, ride my new tire Cush’-less, then remove it, and re-install the Cushcore, and install the new tire? 🤨
That was more of a tip for brand new bikes when installing for the first time, but if you want to take it to that level that's cool too.
@@SingleTrackSurgeon haha, I was more just being difficult. I managed to get it installed that night with a brand new Tough Casing WTB Vigilante. It wasn’t too bad once I figured out really pushing the bead to the center dip of the rim to create more slack in the tire. Thanks for the vid 🤙🏼
No worries, happy shredding.
Watched this 3 times.
I really need to stop trying with new cushcore & new tires.
I Failed.
But hey, let’s run the tire a while and then try again.
(Couldn’t keep the bead down in the well)
A lot of it is patience, I've actually had really bad luck with flats lately (razorblade rocks not the fault of cushcore) I've mounted multiple new DH casing tire and while it's hard, patience is the key.
9:40, I guess this was my issue. I couldnt squeeze in sealant for dear life xD.
I forget all the time...
Great video!
Thanks for watching, hopefully it helped.
Great technology and the greatest pain in the azz to get the tire to fit
If you master the technique, it really doesn't take that long. 😁
Tubeless rim tape first before the valve
If your rim doesn't have it already... yes. But as I mentioned, mine came stock ready for tubeless.
With shipping the tubeless liquid isn't the problem. It's a problem during storage where bikes might sit for months unmoved. And the liquid puddles up and solidifies. It makes the liquid useless and the tyre off balance
Making STANIMALS!
I put the tyre on first, install cushcore like a tube. That way one bead is already tucked in nice. Works every time.
If you are able to slip it in like a tube it isn't tight enough. Every rim is different, but new cushcore should be difficult to get onto the rim even before the tire is added.
@@SingleTrackSurgeon have you tried it? I have and it works. Thanks for your opinion though.
@@roddas26 I have, and as I stated a brand new cushcore should not be able to just slip in like a tube. If it is loose enough to slide in this way, most likely you are using an old cushcore or it simply is not tight enough for your rim. You can fix this by soaking it in hot water and shrinking it a bit. To gain full advantage of the cornering advantages of cushcore it should be super tight!
@@SingleTrackSurgeon I can assure you it's the correct size cushcore. And what I do works. Cheers for your concern though.
looks so ez on every tut..im close to throw my tire out of the window..it just want seat,
We've all been there brother!
Anyone complaining about installing cushcore has clearly never installed a bib mousse on a moto bike hahaha
Correct...
Like your content, helpful for sure. Please stop saying "actually". It's actually annoying after a bit :) Ride on..
Never actually notice that I say actually too much. I'm actually embarrassed about saying actually a lot. I'm actually really sorry for saying actually. I am actually pretty happy that you enjoyed my content despite me saying actually too often.
man i want to play Super Mario for some reason
Hahahaha, close but no cigar. Think shooting...
Next time do the tutorial how to get cush core out
Already have one of those 👍🏼
ActUaLLy
???
Nice video. When you speed up the action and play video game sound it is very annoying. If you did not speed it up. The video would not be much longer
Each clip is at like 1000x speed, but thank you for your feedback.
Over an hour trying to get the damn tyre seated, new tyre, nightmare
Sometimes the combination of tire and rim can be a real pain. Patience and slow movement around the rim is key!
Now do this with a real tire. Something with DD or DH casing
I do it every time I put a tire on my race bike. DH casing, and DD they all work the same.
@@SingleTrackSurgeon it’s been a couple years since I’ve installed cushcore on anything because I would end up destroying the bead on a tire in the process. Maybe I’ll try again the next time I need a new rear tire. Maybe things have changed or I was just dealing with a difficult tire/rim combo???
@@eriknash8783 Now that is very possible, like an FR571 + Maxxis is one of the more difficult ones. And the new DH (non-wire bead) are just as durable and much easier to install. If you are patient, and when it gets hard just go the other direction, you might even impress yourself with how easy it is.
I notice you skipped the whole soapy water step that other people have complained about.
Yeah, not really into the whole soapy water thing. But sometimes desperate rims cause for desperate measures. There are also other tricks like using zip ties, manual bead seating, and other extreme measures to deal with a pesky tire. But I don't feel like I need to mention them when they only apply to maybe 3% of cases.
This is sort of like following the included directions except with added misinformation (directions specifically say no orientation needed on valves) and it takes 16 minutes to watch and hear him say actually 20 times. The directions take 30 seconds to read.
Thank you for your input, I would love to see your instructional video for the installation process.
double down, totally different animal...
I just installed a set with a DD in the front and a DH casing in the rear and had no problem using the same process.
Singletrack Surgeon , good for you, but you are a surgeon soo...
I just did exo and dd back to back and they where completely different. Its thicker and harder to stretch lol how could it be just as easy?
If you dont have much of a shallow section on your rim you cannot push it in the center too gain any extra slack.
@@SingleTrackSurgeon I also have so many problems dropping the bead into the well .. do you have any tipps ? The first side of the tire was no problem
I’m 16 did it not that hard just takes 45 min
Great job!
The word is "the", not "thee".
Thank you for taking your valuable time to watch my video and comment on my pronunciation.
Nope, thats way too much work.....
Without all of the banter, it really is quite swift...
Just gloss over the actual detail on fitting the tyre , talk BS for the other 15 minutes
I'm really glad you enjoyed it. Looking forward to seeing your video.
@@SingleTrackSurgeon I watched 2 more tutorials after yours , they were extremely helpful and to the point in a much shorter time.
If I was to make a tutorial video on something I felt proficient in , it would be much like their videos. The full process shown , no edits and no waffle.
How much sealant you put inside the tyre?
I like to fill it up to just below the level of the cushcore when you are filling the bottom. Not an exact measurement, but more of a feel thing.
