Excellent video, guys. Baseball truly is a game of inches and it is also a game of a single out or a single great play. If you can receive a slightly outside ball with minimal distracting movement to present to the ump for called strike three and in doing so you take the bat out of the opponent's clean up guy's hands and you hang on for the win, then that single strike is invaluable. it can be the diff between a W or and L or even a championship. Go Twins!
one knee down works very well for my daughter in 14u. She's no longer focused keeping her balance. She started framing on her own after watching this video and already sold a few strikes!
Not sure if this is too late but could I also use a school binder that's at a similar angle in place of the ramp? Or Is the angle different or something?
When I caught 300+ pitches every day before school in February, I wish I had this training. If we had weighted mitts in Feb?!!?!?!? My game would be A ball, getting drafted as a senior/NCAA player. Listen up kids. If you practice like this at 14/15yrs old... You game will lvl up
Totally understand the principle behind starting with the glove down and a good low target. Personally don’t like and will never agree with starting on one knee down (especially the right knee down and left knee up, seems like it would hinder receiving that low inside pitch to a right hand batter, especially a hard sinker or 2 seamer from a right hand pitcher) but what seems to be happening with this trend is this is more of a band aid for younger catchers (teenage and on up) to just try receive pitches that are already strikes cleaner. Would love a little more in depth about getting behind balls and catching strikes vs pitches that are already cock shots. Could you guys go into more detail about receiving those low strikes at the batters shins and how to “get behind” balls. I’m noticing a lot of younger kids are struggling with the glove side low pitch because they are getting “thumbed” since they can’t seem to get in a good receiving position since the pitchers command isn’t that great at a younger age. Appreciate the response and keep up the good work!
Agreed. Call me a grump, but the one knee is for college and up with no runners on. I’m not entirely lose minded, but it always seems like you’re losing an aspect of receiving the ball up in the zone to get on top or shifting side to side. Most pitchers at a younger level don’t hit their spots as consistently and most young catchers don’t have as good as hands. With runners on base, the average high school catcher is gonna need to slide more often than not.
After talking to many older catchers and a good bunch of pitchers, the dropping of the glove is not universally liked. It is the current technique, but honestly pitchers hate the target dropping away while they are in the motion. All the pitchers I talked to said it is not good to move the glove during hard focus. One former Minor league catcher thought it a fad and doesn’t help with calls at all. All it does is make a lousy target. His words..” The Ump has a hard time seeing the glove down there if at all. It doesn’t make sense, you are just making the pitcher’s job more difficult.”
Umpires will eventually stop giving framing calls, but for now they are way behind. When the auto strike zone is implemented, and it will be, this goes out the window. In close games where movement is crucial, one knee is slower. Not slow, but slower. Cost a run against Vanderbilt.
What about 94 with inside run? Your thumb will explode. What do you say about that? Where is the relaxing of the wrist before the pitch is thrown? I guess I’m kind of confused.
Question. My son is 6 years old and playing for the first time. He is catching this and playing from 1 knee. When in this position his thigh is completely exposed. I played catcher also but played in the traditional stance so this is hard for me to grasp
I got no issue with the new presentation but as we teach this new craft MLB will implement roboumps. So are we wasting efforts and time or not? Just asking.
I know umpires whose philosophy is no one moves strikes. If they see you moving your mitt, they assume you are trying to steal strikes. So you may lose some strikes doing this that you might have gotten.
Isn’t pitching to a target important. Low glove position doesn’t provide location for pitching . Seems like to much glove movement. Love to hear your feedback as a pitcher throwing to this technique
Absolutely not a fan, I play in the NWAC and my catchers are too focused on this style and miss and drop a lot of pitches, if I miss a ball up in the zone but still a strike it'll tip off there glove and go over there head
@@nathanielzervos1265 statscast has proved it’s better. Best advanced stats show jose trevino on the Yankees is the best at receiving in the mlb. He does this exact technique.
Imagine LEARNING this new and improved technique as an adult! Could you imagine? Most pitchers in upper level are quite familiar with using the batter and the plate to place pitches. As a softball catching coach, a catcher when I played and a coach who trains my third generation catcher daughters, I assure you that there are significant (albeit my own antidotal experiences and research) impact on the game when proper framing ESPECIALLY using this new technique is utilized. If you have noticed as of late, catchers are starting to ready themselves on one knee as opposed squatting into their receiving positions. If thought through critically, it makes absolute sense to do this so umpires have less of a guide to determine by strike zones. Low pitches, unless PERFECTLY PLACED, are the toughest to get a good call on, even more so in softball so how could receiving from the underside of the ball NOT considerably improve the likelihood of the call? I hated teaching this in the beginning, mostly with older ball players. I was set in my ways bc my ways were tried and true. From coach pitch to D1, what I taught worked and I was stubborn to consider the “new” styles because it’s such a drastic shift in body movement, “muscle memory” and stance to what we would consider proper receiving practices and a little bit bc I felt old and obsolete. But seeing the calls being made, (the biggest being the low inside) made me a believer and my engineering thought process was like “well shit, of course it works, it’s not about me”. As catchers, we aren’t trying to prove pitch placement to anyone BUT the HPU, why not use any and all manner of form to ensure you get the call you want? 😉
@@anthonydolce5401 the point is that statcast cannot show whether or not dropping the target reduces the number of strikes. Many catchers want to hold the target as long as possible because they say it helps pitchers throw strikes

Your thigh is exposed to foul tips. Your priorities are making balls into strikes, until your team is at bat and when the umpire calls a strike out of the zone. Then the priority will be giving the umpire grief because now he's calling it against your team. This technique is a result of mlb and its good pitching always being around the zone, a low number of pitches In The dirt that require blocking, and with velocities up, less balls in play, stolen bases mean less and attempted less as well. And since this has spread like wild fire, I've never seen so many past balls that should have been blocked or at least knocked down. And the number of balls that don't get blocked, just multiply them by 2 or 3 , for every level you drop from College that use this technique. Everyone can see the glove move to frame balls. And how many pitches will a catcher convert into strikes that may have been called anyway...? ive heard some new school instructors talk about this, that it is taking the frame of reference away from The umpire, because of the moving glove and ability to steal strikes, as if thats a good thing. Its not helping the game. Some advice from an old school catcher turned umpire, keep it simple, if you think its a strike, catch and hold. If an umpire calls a border line pitch in or out, there is way less grief from both sides, if the pitcher hits his target and the catcher doesn't move his glove. And pitches up or down both dugouts know where the pitch crossed, and when the dugout grief starts, zones become bread box sized. Quit trying to fool umpires and help sell the strike. Just catch and hold ,umpires I know are very reluctant to call a border line pitch if the catchers glove is moving on the catch and bringing the glove into the zone, just leave it there. Reminder, that if the umpire calls them straight, you don't have to worry about when it's your turn to hit. Enjoy it while it lasts, Electronic strike zone will be the solution, when mlb teams are tired of getting screwed over on the Frame jobs. Umpires aren't close to perfect, but my prediction is, if this stealing strikes thing continues and promotes a lack of a working relationship between catchers and umpires, mlb will fast track that electronic strike zone.
Why is the throwing hand exposed? This upward movement won't get many calls. This is terrible set up for youth, takes away any chance of them blocking a wild pitch or throwing out a runner. Style should not be adopted in baseball.

that technique promotes so many horrible habits. You cant slide to your right with right knee down. Another thing why do you bring you glove up from dirt.
