    I don't think it's a bad take that Homelander is a victim, but saying he has no choice is ridiculous. He chooses to be a part of Vought and the Seven every day when he can just leave.

      True. Or. He could just apologise to butcher for real, stop randomly murdering people and supes, and just, stop being evil, but he chooses not to.

      Yep. Homelander even said it himself. "I can do whatever I want." He could choose to do some good but he won't. He's never shown an ounce of remorse or guilt for any of the things he's done. He never learn's from his mistakes either. In fact, he's hell-bent on hiding his mistakes from the public.

      Well you need to think about what’s it’s like for the other guy, you’ve probably heard dozens of times that homelander just wants to be loved. Where else would homelander go to feel “loved” at? Family reunion? Keep in mind he was raised his entire childhood to be the most patriotic and loyal product of vought, he literally has nowhere to go. So no, he can’t just choose to leave vought through his eyes.

    • @Homelander57
      @Homelander57 6 месяцев назад +3

      After everything he’s had to face and endure not only does he have choice’s you’re right; but with Vought he has options; clearly showing that what he told stormfront meant not only does the shows homelander have bigger plans but it also shows that his ego was increasing over time as he was planning to do a lot more when Edgar was around, so for him being the way he is; he can’t just pull an Annie and say “i fucking quit”. He now has the most power not only for what he’s had on the world itself, but he’s stronger than himself when he was in “the room”.

    Homelander being a victim of Vought doesn’t absolve him of all the evil he’s done in the slightest, the truth is Vought gave him a horrible childhood and in doing so made a monster, so he’s a victim but he’s without question evil and he’ll never change

    • @nicknamed1267
      @nicknamed1267 6 месяцев назад +3

      Agreed. What happened to him sucked and he's definitely a victim in that regard, but having an awful childhood doesn't make it okay to turn into such a monster. Homelanders one of the most evil people in the show and has no desire to change, the fact that he's evil because he had it rough as a kid does nothing to justify or excuse his actions, and the fact that he has so much power and choice now but still chooses to sink deeper into depravity makes him pretty unsympathetic to me. You can't control your abuse, but you can control how you choose to handle it, and I don't have much sympathy for remorseless serial killers and rapists.

    This is honestly why I think he’s such an interesting character. I wrote a long dissertation about him too on my channel, called “the ultimate tragedy villain” I covered that he never had freedom as well, and went quite in depth. You definitely touched on some things I didn’t, really well done video!
    My controversial opinion is that I would except genuine forgiveness from him. Real and awful people that has had a similar heart ei; sociopaths, serial killers, horribly broken people has had and wanted genuine redemption. And I know he’s a fictional character, but if all he deeply wants is sincere love, imagine how affected his heart would be.

  • @GuacamoleQ
    @GuacamoleQ 6 месяцев назад +12

    While I appreciate your effort into this I heavily disagree with your opinion, but unlike the people in these comments I'm going to explain why
    1: Saying that Hughie is not the victim because he could have "just signed the papers" and because he has starlight he cant be a victim is just disregarding the fact that Hughie's girlfriend died just because a-train was abusing compound V. And its also shown a train has no remorse for this event when he states and I quote "I ran so fast through this ***** that I swallowed one of her molars. Like a bug on the ****** freeway."
    2:Saying butcher could have just "moved on from Becca" is quite literally the worst argument I've ever heard, thats completely disregarding that homelander literally SA'd Becca. Saying that butchers pursuit of justice after that is unjustified would be the same thing as saying batman's war on crime is unjustified just because it started from a personal experience.
    3: Saying homelander had no other path is just wrong, he's literally the strongest man in the world. Vought cannot get rid of him if they wanted to, if homelander decided he didnt want to be a superhero he wouldnt have to because simply put, whos going to stop him.
    4: Using the fact that homelander doesn't have a maternal figure as a way to justify all the things hes done is just wrong once again, you know who else didnt have a dad CHARLES MANSON!! But I dont think you'd exactly call him a victim.
    5: Calling him a victim because queen Maeve dated him out of fear is lacking in context simply because the show doesn't exactly give us context, Starlight dated him because he made it official on live television and she was afraid of him(He literally murdered Supersonic because he got too close) to call her a victim would be a flawed argument.
    6: Using Antony Starr saying that homelander is a victim of Vought is missing the point of the show, The boys is all about victims of the system, everyone in the group of the boys(Frenchie, MM, Hughie, Butcher) are all victims of supes in one way or another as MM states in season three the whole point of their orginization is nobody should have these powers in the first place.
    7: Saying that giving anyone that much power firstly Supports the boys argument of nobody should have powers in the first place, and secondly does not make him morally right or a victim in the slightest, if a world leader were to drop a nuke on a country simply because they had "so much power how could they resist" would not make them a victim.
    8: Yes homelander does some good things, another major thing in the plot of the boys is just corruption overall, a goverment agency could be doing good things but still be horrible people and it in no way would make them a victim.
    9:Using the argument that homelander saved the baby would has 2 major flaws in that one, it is never confirmed that he saved the baby, yes you addressed the other theory of his powers kicking in then but just because you find it unlikely docent mean that its not canonically what happened. Secondly, if he had saved the baby it could have just been to shed him in a better light in the public eye. The most important scene to me in the boys is when homelander talks to himself in the mirror and says "I want them to love me."
    10: saying homelander turning his back to the people who want him dead because he cares for his son dosent have as much impact as you would think, homelander is quite literally invincible. He's only ever been scratched before I highly doubt homelander was fearing for him life in this moment.
    11: Your argument of homelander enduring insults from his father figures is flawed because the whole video you speak of how everyone is too afraid of homelander and he turned out this way because of that. Now because these men are not afraid of homelander and tell him their true feelings on him he's still a victim?
    12: Saying that butcher killing people just so he could get a take at homelander so he's worse then homelander is disregarding that butcher is doing this for the greater good, you said it yourself, homelander has killed way more people if a couple people have to die so nobody else dies from homelander then so be it. You have to break a few eggs to make a omelet. And no, I dont think in any way butcher is a moral person, its even said in gen V that butchers hate has consumed him so much to where its destroyed him, another reoccuring theme of the boys.

    That is why the show is so good. Even the worst people the writers make us sympathize for them. Butcher, etc., are abused by their dads. Hughie is the only genuinely good person and his power, which, according to the writers, match his personality, is to teleport...naked. Showing us that superpowers would make you awful is the point of the comics and the show. I, for one, don't share their pessimism and cynicism, but it does make for some compelling television.

    Homelander could've chosen to be a good hero to compensate for his bad upbringing. Zuko from Avatar got treated like shit by his old man, and yet he still found redemption. Whereas if we're to factor in the comics, the only time Homelander gets ''redeemed'' somewhat was when Black Noir revealed that he bamboozled Homelander into becoming evil.

      @user-ev9gk4vp8x lol, did you even read my original post? once again you prove you don't get the difference between understanding why someone is the way they are, and excusing their actions. Never once described Homelander as a "victim". The way he was raised was shitty, without loving parents, just uncaring scientists and corporate handlers. Did I ever say that excused his actions later in life? No. My original point clearly soared over your head and you're just arguing with a strawman you constructed.

I feel horrible for him because of everything he's gone through, knowing he never had a chance to be an actual person; always a product of Vought. He's my favorite character overall, over all media types, and I love analyzing his scenes and describing what thoughts are currently going through his head and motivating his actions.

    The way everyone in the comments missed the conclusion of this video, of not excusing Homelander’s behavior but simply understanding the inhumane conditions he was raised in. He’s a victim of severe child abuse, no other way to put it. Any normal child raised without basic emotional support, emotional/behavioral regulation skills, forced labor (he never had a choice becoming the “face” of Vought) is literally set up to fail in life.
    I wonder if Cate can push him to “feel loved” and 180 the storyline to have everyone destroy Vought for good.

Like him going around and killing people isn't good, but he can not at all regulate his feelings... and as you said you learn those skills as a child, but no one ever did help him grow emotionally. This is my first video of yours, if you'll have the read?
    Your video hit ... home... with me. There's a lot of layers here so I'm going to break it down using personal experience and get right into it without wasting time. I'm trying to consolidate here, so this will come off as a bit all over the place, I'll try to make the connections obvious.
    I grew up in the system in Connecticut during the 80's when Deinstitutionalisation was happening. The idea of kids being put into these kinds of situations is real and Homelander's life is one I can relate to in that, if you're smart or have special trauma, you were treated as an experiment. Homelander was, as were a lot of kids growing up in the system. If not an experiment, you were the lowest of human you can imagine.
    You are on a correct path here in that, without certain people in my life to change a path or show me a more positive light, my outcome could be this monster we see on the screen without super powers, and this outcome is common among people who grow up in institutions. These days the 'super powers' these kids are using are guns and it's a future that should scare us. My statistic is death or jail. I've dodged these bullets so far and consider this a win. I surround myself with people who keep me humble, chill, and love me. Other humans are a cheat code, which brings us back to Homelander and his relationships. He often gets stabbed in the back by the people who he brings in. His ability to trust diminishes more, removing this net that is vital to pushing those more violent reactions away. He fantasizes about killing the bullies (humans with their big mouths yelling, saying mean things and throwing stuff...) until ultimately he fucks up and does it. The restraint he had his whole life until he snapped will be what this next season focuses on. It doesn't excuse him, and that's where his defense breaks down.
    If you'd like to look into this some more, look into Fairfield Hills, Newington's Children's Hospital as well as Wheeler Clinic. I stayed in all of these facilities growing up and the stories are just as insane as you can imagine. There are worse places you'd hear about as you were in these facilities, such as one in Maine and another in Massachusetts... Tufts or something. Kids disappeared and this history is one of America's we are working to cover up. Seeing these stories as a warning to the world is fitting. We're raising monsters right now because of this system that is broken. A perspective you can tell from the other side of the pond as an outsider.
    *cough* Please normalize your volumes... it got really loud at the end with your cuts... good video otherwise.

      @The_Tortoise_and_the_Hare 6 месяцев назад +2

      I would think that anyone with trauma from not being loved as a kid could relate to Homelander, he is a bully though, other people too but he bullies certain teammates. I grew up with childhood emotional neglect, and I can't trust people, I do not like emotional intimacy (because I can't trust that what people say or do is true, and feel like if I do open up or get vulnerable it's just gonna end up hurting more if something goes wrong), I have social anxiety, avoidant personality disorder and other stuff. Homelander has narcissistic personality disorder though, but I still feel sad for him. He is my favorite character on the show because I can feel for him, like his sad parts, it makes me so sad and I just want to comfort him. But yeah as I said, I think people with trauma can feel bad for him, the ones who's lived pretty happy lives will not be able to at all.

    Bad take, all the people killed and hurt by homelander are completely avoidable and yes due to vought but hell nah he is not the only victim in the story. Own up to your mistakes and enable likes again

      @@Jamesw587 not really brainwashed or controlled... he chooses to view life the way he does. it's just that his egotistical viewpoints were always encouraged and supported by the world around him, so never really got the chance to develop past them
