Thank you! This is one of my all-time Waits favorites. I wanted to re-record it because it was one of my early songs when I didn't really have as nice a setup for recording and didn't have any experience.
Howdy George. I stumbled across your site while listening to some eagles music and watched a few of your videos. Very nice selection of stuff to listen too on your site. I've got a few songs on my site that you might enjoy listening too if you want. Keep on playing and singing them songs! I can tell you enjoy playing music. Good stuff!
Thank you. I'm glad I helped. My "lessons" are more effective for the kind of learner who can learn by seeing me and hearing me. I'm not a fancy schooled musician but neither are a lot of people who just want to learn their favorite songs on guitar.
Thanks for sharing your terrific cover. I think if you bring it down tempo a bit and chill your strum pattern some, you'll have a gem. Which says a lot when you're covering Tom Waits. Thanks again--great job!
hammockmonk Thanks for your advice. Yes, as I listen to it, it would be much better if I slowed it down and backed off on the strum volume. Perhaps a 21c is in the works.
just a suggestion from one ol country singer to another George :) I found that when some parts of the song were just a little bit in the gutter for my voice a half-chord notch would make it really pop. That way I could just use the same chords with a capo up one fret. Nice song :)
Sorry, my own terminology. As described, put the capo on the first fret up the neck (for example, if you are playing in C would raise it to C#). You played this song in G so one fret up would bring you to Ab. In sequence musical keys are A, Bb, B, C, C#, D, Eb, E, F, F#, G, Ab (the notches). Playing the standard chord patterns on a guitar, each fret up the neck capoed raises the key that much. So another example would be playing G chords with the capo on the second fret would raise it to A, on the 3rd would be Bb, 4th B, 5th C, and so on. Just play with it up and down until your voice feels comfy ... you'll know when you get there :)
Shirley Phillips Thanks Shirley. Yes it was a little low for me. I should have moved a capo up a fret or two. Just didn't know what you meant by "notch." I do now.
I love this song. Tom Waits is such a great songwriter. I covered two of his songs too, "I Want You" and "Take Me Home." Maybe you'll check them out and tell me what you think? Anyway, thanks for posting this. I enjoyed it.
Thanks, Dennis. I've covered a lot of Tom Waits songs and have a Tom Waits Playlist on my channel. I have not covered the two that you have so I'll have to check that out. I love his writing too.
Wow! I've gotten more negative and critical comments since the holidays started than I usually get in months. My pace is my pace. Sorry my treatment was not pleasing to you. Yes, I do race more than I plod.
Very nice and original cover! Thanks!

Tom Waits is one of the best songwriters ever. Really cool cover, George! Your performance shines. :) Janet
I enjoyed this immensely! I'm working on my own cover of "Hold On", and you helped shorten the learning curve. Thank you!
Thanks, Kyle. It's a great song. Glad my video helped you!

Thank you for the kind suggestion. I have no idea what a "half-chord notch" is though.

Glad I could help :D I'd like to hear you do the song again just a bit higher.
Shirley Phillips Thanks, Shirley. I'll give that a try.
