I enjoy your talks for sure Tony. In 1986 I realized I was a dying breed our field was being decimated by the cheep Japanese imports and you bring back those times for me and others here as well and for the young ones they can see what a shop bench looked like for a small mom and pop shop. Good Times! Thanks

Wrapping those poles with wire was very interesting, and the collection of tools, very hands on. Thanks.

Nice relaxing video! I did a full re-cap on my Marantz 2130 and found it much easier to leave the wires on the wire-wrap pins and instead, un-solder the pins with the wires attached. Simple, and you can't tell it was serviced.

I've been using 30 ga wire wrap since the 80's, so I enjoyed the discussion of wrapping. Pretty neat to see a home-made unwrapper!

I have the Marantz Esotec st-8 tuner which is essentially what I call the “jewelers” version of the 2130. It is the most beautiful tuner Marantz ever built in my book. Champagne faceplate, round window on the scope, exquisite styling on the layout and knobs and switches. Fantastic reception and sound.

Your attention to detail is just inspiring. Poor Marantz just needed some love (and less nasty glue) ;) Great video, Tony!

I did get more busy as I got older. I'm retired now and don't see how I got anything done when I was working 40+ hours a week. I was a building contractor and still do all my repairs around the house. Seems like a never ending project. Watching for part 2.

I'm not a big fan of tuner's but I know that I'm still going to watch the entire video because apart from being relaxing watching you work, I know that there's going to be excellent pro tips in it!
But watching old capacitors being tested, I'm mean yeah it's a bad capacitor but it's like a challenge to find the worst capacitor that you have ever come across! The best capacitor that I own came out of a vacuum tube device that was used in an airplane back in the 1950's which was used to guide the plane to the runway! It's a big roll of metal film with at least 3 lead's coming out of each side! I have never seen anything like it but it's capacity is spot on! ESR EPR are unmeasurable, quality is 100% and phase angle is perfect! From memory it's a 1uf capacitor but it's huge LoL... The device was built in Australia by AWA!
I still don't have a worst capacitor yet! But testing still continues! What can I say, it's the nerd in me LoL.
Also, you touched topic on your vacuum tube amplifier. I was wondering if you might decide to re examine that quasi complimentary eBay amplifier that you put together but didn't work out for you... I was thinking that it would be great if you came up with a good fix for it that would get it to perform really well! I'm not interested in high power output just good quality sound! Unfortunately I have a few of these things that are waiting to be put together but I'm waiting for someone who knows a lot more than I do to get one to work nicely.... I have a love for the old TO3 3055's and I want an amplifier powered by them even if they are Chinese clones...

I've also have made a few different wire wrapping tools over the years. Just finished a Pioneer SA8500II that was one of those that worked and was supposed to be just a recap and control cleaning. A 2 day job turned into 2 weeks. Ended up with a microscopic short between the positive and negative supplies. It was the AWF-023 Equalizer Amplifier (phono board) . Had all the components off the board and still had a short. I have a Flir and could see where the short was between the + & - post. I ended up just increasing the current gradually and finally heard a little arch. It was gone. Could not even see the issue with a microscope. I will never say, " This will be an easy fix"", again!

31:25: Adding two Electrolytics in series always(!) requires parallel resistors to control their DC-voltages. Otherwise the electrolytic with the higher internal DC resistance will suffer the higher DC-voltage!

I cringe when I see this in consumer gear. I have a Peavy tube amp I'm working on that has 660v B+ and they run stacked capacitors for the filters. Thankfully they have the voltage dividing resistors in place

Those 10uf caps were good quality for their time but has been a long time since they were made and caps don't last forever. At one point the cap manufacturers changed how the sealed HV caps (>200v) and that change allowed any solvent with fluorocarbons to seep past the seal into the cap and that slowly destroyed the electrolyte and the caps would short out.
We discovered this on a run of HV precision power supplies that used multiple 10uf/450v caps in series. Back then we used Trico as our general cleaner for PWB's and that destrowed hundreds of caps. We ended up recapping hundreds of these supplies so that we got to eat that contract. After that we switched to 99% alcohol, not as gfood as tricho but it didn't eat electrolytic caps.

Technician JOB, Tony grate comments on the youth and technical jobs. I thought of particularly pertinent when you commented on training and how value is a two-way street. Electronic tech jobs in industry are drying up. TV/radio technicians is gone, Two-way radios technicians industrial is around but like you say training and certification issues. Much of electronics is disposable, more's the pity.

I use to be a repair person repairing many of these wonderful receivers. Said part is today things are Surface mount devices and these are not worth repairing since the parts are not readily available like the components on these serviceable equipment. Plus the crap that comes out of china is not wort repairing. You see large screen TVs thrown away cause there are no shops left to repair them. Sad affairs here in the US. Our skills have gone down the toilet.

I had a Kenwood Tuner of similar vintage (KT-7000). It didn't have a built in scope but it had multi-path outputs for a Kenwood add-on scope (KT-6060a), which is still have..:). But I really like the Marantz design.

Speaking of multi function test equipment, I REALLY wish we had An affordable alternative for a source measure unit. Marco reps was working on the “OSMU“… Which stands for “open source measure unit.” And there’s a guy on RUclips who has built a really nice DIY unit… But it still probably cost over $1000.
But if there was a good SMU available for $1000, maybe a bit more maybe a bit less… I know a lot of folks would jump on the chance to own one.... including myself.
I have my own lab, specializing in Component level troubleshooting/repair and calibration of test equipment… For manufacturing clients. And clients who have their own labs and other metrology related folks
so I have the skills to build my own. … But I am NOWHERE NEAR SKILLED ENOUGH to design something like that.I’m just a monkey with a wrench who can build plug-and-play stuff, and troubleshoot/calibrate pre-existing test equipment.
It’s a crying shame that we’ve heard nothing else from Marco regardless OSMU
because Marco reps would have an absolutely bulletproof and wonderful design. His approach to metrology and test equipment very much mirrors my own. , And has influenced me greatly… Much to the agony of my bank account.
However it’s been an absolute treat to construct some of the projects he has shared. The wonderful piece of test equipment that he constructed a few months ago… (That was designed by CERN for the large hadron collider)… i enjoyed researching and building my own based on his construction. it is a real valuable addition to my lab
I blame him for adding more process calibrators and 8 1/2 digit multimeters to my lab. All in the constant lust for ppm’s
I can’t get enough of that shit

Good talk, lots to be said about that two way street yor were discussing. The desire to learn should be the prime concern when learning the skills for electronics/ electromech./ mechanical trades not so much the money. One day you're new at it and then youblink and find 50 years have past and you are still applying these skills that have been hard won over these years. Never stop learning!Enjoyed watching.

Sometimes freeze spray works to free up that nasty glue. Especially if some is still pliable. That glue has caused a lot of weird problems over the years in many types of equipment.

I have a faulty 2130 here which has a problem with the scope: it works, but i can´t adjust focus, so it shows a large spot only. Potentiometer is fine, but doesnt do anything, spot wont shrink or whatever. Caps in PSU have been replaced. Any idea where to look next? And one tranformer is getting pretty warm after 30-40 mins on, is this normal behavior? Thanks in advance ;)

I think a lot of your problems with the ergonomics, stems from the fact that it is so new to you, and different than what you're used to. With use, muscle memory will set in, and you'll be more comfy with it. I'm not into this type of equipment, but after using a lot of "techie" stuff, over the years, this is what happens.
