Take everything that Mark mumbled and turn it around. Brando is the greatest actor of his time and this is his finest moment. The film took the best points of Nouvelle Vague improvistional filmmaking and Francis Bacon's existentialism. I can see why some find suggestive eroticism instead of hardcore pornography boring but they are the ones without imagination.
I agree with the boyfriend scenes they are boring but it's because you want more of Brando. His performance is spot on. The wife scene could be one of his greatest performance
Amusing to hear a self-confessed "little islander" film critic, being snide about Marlon Brando's "decline". He was the greatest actor of all time, acknowledged by all his peers and younger generation actors- even Sir john Gielgud, an old school knight of British theatre and not inclined to extol the merits of "method acting" acknowledged his preminence. Critics have to have an exaggerated sense of their importance I guess, as a prerequisite for the job, but honestly "mumbling", "boring", "self-indulgent". Its like Michaelangelo being critiqued by Bugs Bunny!
I think it's overrated generally, but Brando was brilliant in it. He didn't mumble any more than he did in his 50's work, so I don't really get that criticism.
Just finished watching Last tango In Paris and didn't mind it. A little long in the tooth, but compared to some current films, thought it had a lot going for it.
Mark Kermode's top ten films on Wikipedia include Mary Poppins, The Exorcist, and Pan's Labyrinth. Go ahead and enjoy the boy's stuff, Mark, but please, leave great cinema to men.
Last Tango is a fantastic movie. Not boring at all; quite opposite, actually. I find it fascinating. I watch it a couple times per year. The annoying boyfriend's story is indeed unnecessary (it was the 70s, cut Bertolucci some slack) but aside from that small misstep, I think it's one of the best and most important movies of all time. The Tango scene at the end brings me so much joy it's almost unreal. One of my all time favorites. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
+Kaprah91 That's not at all a nice way to reply to a comment. You should be nicer :) I disagree with you, I enjoy several of Bertolucci's movies, La Luna, The Dreamers, Stealing Beauty, Last Tango.... I confess I have not seen The Last Emperor so I can't say either way... His career is not consistent, but he's made some damn good and artistic films over several decades. Which is better than a career of mediocrity. To each their own, my aggressive and foulmouthed friend. I'm sure you like stuff that I hate, and as you've already made clear, I enjoy a movie you do not. Which is fine. At least, fine to me... I don't really care that you think Last Tango is rubbish, because I actually do really love it so I think you're totally wrong and no amount of fuck yous is going to change that. You need a positive outlet for your pent up frustrations. Insulting people online over movies is kind of pathetic. I recommend exercise or yelling into a pillow.
Watched the film and thought it was good. Only reason to watch the film was for Brando, the cinematography and the music. Nothing else was all that interesting and the characters weren't likeable. I wouldn't go as far as saying the film is terrible or boring, but I do think it ain't that great as people say it is. I think movies with similar themes have done it much better.
I think it's pretty safe to say that Kermode has heard of Novecento. And well done in trying to impress people by showing that you are aware of the existence of that film.
A PhD in English doesn't mean he has any buisness reviewing film. It's true that he can though, so I guess you're right there. Good thing this man isn't known very far outside of the UK.
@TulseLuper the logic. in calling him a h.w junkie, doesn't work in reverse; (all horses are animals, but not all animals are horses).. and what Brando said about L.T is irrelevant. I don't have time to go through all reasons that makes L.T a great work of art, but the critic tone of voice and his mechanical approacch to a peice of art speaks of his untrained, and hollywood narrative bound limits of his minds; L.T can be read in terms of text - as he puts it; but that mean you don't understand i
Flesh for Frankenstien? This guy has no life but to try and impress pseudo-intellectuals by pretending to love obscure, shitty films. "Oh wow, what a sophisticated contrarian."
Can a film critic's critic license be taken away? I like Kermode, but he's being batshit crazy here. And the way he keeps ridiculing Brando with that "eating pie" comment tells me that his dislike of the the movieis perhaps more personal or ideological. Kermode is very open in his very leftist-socialist-Marxist leanings, so maybe "Tango" had something and/or Brando said something that was anti-Marcist?
I just saw Last Tango and it was a great film in my opinion, also, Marlon does not mumble at all in this film, so I don't get the critics.
He mumbles
Mark must have Last Tango in Paris confused with The Conformist, which was gorgeously shot but boring. Last Tango was stunning and moving.

Even when Brando was clearly phoning it in for a quick pay cheque, he was still amazing.
How was he phoning it in? I thought he put everything into it.
Mark Kermode's top ten films on Wikipedia include Mary Poppins, The Exorcist, and Pan's Labyrinth. Go ahead and enjoy the boy's stuff, Mark, but please, leave great cinema to men.
Kemode is a good critic but his views on Marlon are ridiculous.
Brando in apocalypse now is awesome...come on

+Kaprah91 The only great film he ever made was The Conformist. The Last Emperor is as long & dull as every other film he made.
Me And You is great too.
"Incredibly boring"? Marlon Brando in Last Tango?? Really??? What sort of critic is Mark Kermode? Pretty boring I'd say.
Kermode gets it so wrong, but who cares
This film is absolutely sublime.
Majority of comments here totally put Kermodes views in the cheapshot dustbin. Brando is unique. Hauntingly missed
I disagree with most of this review.

I would like to know what he thinks of Novecento, if he has even heard of it! What an ignorant reviewer calling this film boring
I think it's pretty safe to say that Kermode has heard of Novecento.

The boring part's of this film are the one's Brando is not in.
I never realised just how inept numb Kermode is
1:49 Brando filmed Last Tango in Paris before he was awarded the Oscar for The Godfather.
I missed the chance to see the Good Doctor @ my local cinema tonight, but at least I get a consolation vid! Thanks dude
I'm with u on that man; L.T, I believe, is a true work of a creative mind/s. It is layered, and can be understood at many different levels.
....I just looked it up and he actually DOES like comic books and Doctor Who.
I'm with Kermode on this one. If you want to see a movie that depicts depression, isolation better, watch Nicholas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas.
Well considering he was an editor for Fangoria for years, I'd say he's being genuine.
No, he's just a dork. He probably likes comic books and Doctor Who.
"Marlon cannot accept this award as he's too busy eating a pie" Brilliant!
Mark kermode, a lover of film, doesn’t seem to think much of Brando, udo Keir is voted above Brando? Mark man.. this does not bode well for you
I think he means in those particular films.
Maybe you'd like to review your comments now Mark?
Why is this man reviewing films?

@TulseLuper Nicely put.
Oh. And hello to Jason Isaacs.
Well he sucks at it.
2:30 who?
Catherine Breillat
this makes me dislike kermode
