You guys do such a great job on the video editing, is that sophie's work? The music is always spot-on as well. You know it is when it takes you into the story and sometimes dont even notic the music because it is so one with the whole. And Sophie's attitude is worth her weight in gold, the work she puts into everyone's emotional state is extraordinary and I hope she gets shown plenty of appreciation, including a Captain's pay!
A word for Brian...."Always look on the bright side of life....Always look on the bright side of death ...." Great passage. Funny how 4 different sailing channels were victim to Diesel Bug in the past few months. Sophie is one heck of a cook! Thanks for sharing!
:) Hang on, Brian can survive almost anything. I'd like to point out when Sophie is making her eulogy for Brian, Ryan is laughing in the background. LoL.
Thanks for putting on the Luna Keller song. “Pack My Bags”, I love it, you guys are the best for decompressing at the end of the day . I would get Diesel bugs in my motor home fuel and was told to use an additive like Bioboar and never noticed as dirty of filters as before I began using it.
The wife and I needed our Brian & Sophie Sailing fix, better late than never, although we're a bit heartbroken over Brian. Also you might want to think about keeping that Ryan fella around, he seems handy.
Another great video. Too much fish, jeah normally its the other way round. Hope you could solve your problem with the bug. I bought from england 2 specialized Filters, approved by the Coast guard. With a stainless steel Filter. So no more buying Filters. For 3 years now no problems, before everytime I went into heavy weather. Goo luch and I applaud the Dieyel pest song :-)) Cheers Rover
So many comments. 1) I don't think anyone who has not been at sea for more than a few days realized the joy that a plant on board can bring. It's sad when you lose one, so totally understand the grief. 2) Flying a spinnaker.... I'm so embarrassed to say that after 30 years of sailing, the only time I have flown a spinnaker, it was more of a "Blister" sail, and it was during my ASA advance cruising and Navigation course. I don't have a spinnaker on my boat now, but even if I had one I just think I would be too scared to put it up. So embarrassing to admit that. In my defense, I am normally either single handing, or with inexperienced crew. Love your channel, and your videos, great story telling! I am working on a video now of my 5 day boat move, and it so hard to now sound boring. :-( I'm trying to get inspired by you guys! Great work guys! Are you doing your own editing? Or is someone helping you. Motoring sucks! haha I recently was in a situation with 20 knot headwinds, in the direction I needed to go, and my Lippencot 30 is very under powered (13 HP), so I was going .8 knots backwards. So I ended up tacking, and a hard reach, for 7 hours straight. It was crazy! But I loved the fact that in this cases the motor was useless, and that it was only buy sailing that I was able to make it to my destination for the night. :-) Stay safe!

Brain will live in our memories and the memories of all who knew him. What is this life, if not transitory? Do not think of Brain as dead, but instead think of Brain as transforming to another realm. A realm of rainbows, joy, and dancing.
white smoke.... that should give a tip to Ryan there is excessive water in fuel tank! Therefore potential risk of diesel bug. Looks like it time for a diesel tank clean up!
I like the oceanie music on this video, lol. Be safe out there! Sorry about the diesal bug. What a pain in the A@#! The good thing, you know what the problem is.
Adding the anti-chafe to the lifeline is great. Just wondering if you considered rigging a reaching sheet and going out and under the life lines? You would reduce the chances of chafe and also increase your angle of attack with your head sail(s).
i was going to say check your fuel pick up pipe as that's where the diesel bug lives, but of course you found it at the end of the video - perhaps that can be a line in Ryan's song?""🎶check your fuel pick up pipe, as that's where the diesel bug lives🎶"" another great video guys !
Sorry to hear that Brian has passed on altho part of him still remains. Good luck with dealing to that diesel bug. In the meantime I am now hungry for a hot mince pie. Happy sailing.
Great video! But how do you get two jibs/genoas out like that on one furler? Or did the boat have two sails on the same furler and you just usually have them on the same tack?
Did you guys do great circle navigation calculations for your navigation or rely on the GPS for the track between Cape Verde and your destination? Just curious how you determine the best course.
Get Grotomar if you can. I got a darned inspection camera. Every time it comes out of the case it finds another problem. Spotted my diesel bug which was doing a great service of blocking the pin hole leaks in the fuel tank.
I have never heard of this being done except in water tanks, but installing a UV-C lamp in a diesel tank should kill anything that tries to grow there. Since the bugs grow at the fuel/water interface, that would suggest installing it low in the tank. Ryan? Sound odd enough to work?
Hello Ryan & Sophie, I'm not sure of your process, but you may try to encode your videos in HandBrake. This may give you %50-80 size reduction with almost no quality loss.
Ryan & Sophie Sailing Ah! Maybe the reason a few catamaran cruisers have fuel polishers installed. I remember mechanics adding biobor to the fuel on aircraft and never saw any crud when working in the fuel tanks, mind you airplanes never have their fuel sitting unused longer than a week.
We believe that it started after we got shook on our way to Lanzarote, and that maybe at that point, a little water entered the diesel tank... anyhow, we try to be as cautious as possible!
I think the temps it could have froze. Diesel has a low freezing temp. It turns into pudding. There are Chen's you put in to help prevent this. Always keep some Diesel 911 on board.
We had the exact same engine issue when crossing the English Channel and we found a blockage of diesel bug in the fuel pick up pipe too, see our English Channel video
Awesome videos! I also Had the same issue, at sea like you guys - took the fuel line off at the filter and found only a trickle of fuel was coming from the line directly from the in tank. Put my mouth around the hose and blew the bug back into the tank. A full stream of fuel came out after that. it stayed clear enough for the rest of my trip and then I polished the fuel and vacuumed the tank once I got back. applied biocide as well
Most Americans think stuffing and dressing are the same thing. But when you fill the bird with dressing, it picks up the juices and flavor, and that's stuffing. Cooked outside of the bird, it is dressing, even if it is the same ingredients. Keep the turkey, just serve me doubles on the stuffing.(g)
The dreaded bug!!! Filters just stop it getting to the engine, its always worse in the lines.... Check your fuel filler cap O ring to see the water is getting in past it when it rains or sea water over the sides. Pretty rare to get contaminated fuel from a fuel station as diesel floats on water and the fuel station puck-ups are not at the bottom of their tanks. It will be condensation in your tank from not being kept full, Condensation from your jerry cans same reason, or O ring on the filler letting in water from the deck. Or a slim chance your tank breather has drawn in water in rough weather if the engine was running and it was submerged for a time... Sail Safe guys. Ant, Cid & the Pooch crew.
As an enginge dude ..the water i heavier than the fuel. On cargo ships we have drain outlets in the bottom of the tank and dayly drain the water out. I dont know if sailboats have this ? Best from seabear :)
Spotted Dick without custard or cream? Diesel bug the plight of all Mariners, feel for you but glad you found the problem at source. Good luck and keep sharing thank you.
I’ve had the exact same fuel problem in choppy waters. I believe patches of crud in my tank would gather at the pickup tube and restrict the flow, nearly stopping the engine. I installed two access ports, cleaned the tank and polished the fuel. Yours looked worse than mine on the pickup tube base.Yikes! My tank was mostly clean with small islands of the crud here and there, but it was enough to cause problems. There was also some water in the lower part of the tank, designed as a sump I guess, just out of reach of the pickup tube thankfully. Nice Mahi-mahi for Thanksgiving!
One of those DIY diesel "fuel polishers" ($100 for parts) would be a good thing to clean up the diesel fuel after a tank clean out. Fuel is notorious for having contaminates and water in the stuff you buy, nevertheless condensation and water coming in from the breathers etc. while on board.
