Quite a concise and incisive review/introduction to the book in question, and the artist more generally. There's been a tendency to label the book as belonging to the "dystopian" genre, which I disagree with as a dystopia (as generally depicted in art, film and writing) is one where 'negative' elements are ascendant: the government is oppressive and brutal, the economy exploitative and poisonous, etc.; yet despite these inherent and destructive negatives, the dystopian society remains a *functional* one. I'm not spoiling things saying that in saying that the 'society' as depicted in "The Electric State" is one which is collapsing (if it hasn't already done so, as the writer hints in the blurb of the book), though the causes and consequences are left unclear. Given the book gives us only a pinhole-sized look into this world, one can easily dissect the narratives offered by both Michelle and the agent any number of ways, never mind mine each art plate for the tiniest detail that might clue us into the wider world beyond. That all said, the author's deliberate ambiguity as to the ways and means of what we see in the art pieces he uses - check out the author's webiste for the few pieces that weren't included in the book - provide an immersive experience all on their own as the reader is challenged to fill in the details that the narrative text either glosses over or doesn't even both with. Look at the piece shown at 4:42 and consider precisely what kind of audience "Fritz!" was supposed to attract, never mind appeal to. Or how about the 'drone graveyard' piece at 0:22? What kind of a world is this where towering engineering like that is so commonplace that it doesn't invite even a passing glance? A final thought: the movie options for the book were sold to the Russo brothers last year, and the Muschietti siblings (of the recent adaptation of "Stephen King's 'IT'" fame) have been hired to produce and direct it. One can only hope that with such talent behind the camera, it proves a worthy product of the source material.
I have all 3 of his books now and electric state resonates with our current times of human removal from reality through social media. We are a step away from the VR of his world.

Excellent video and a great introduction to Stalenhag's works! I do have to point out that the scenes of "Village of the Damned" that are shown in the video are from the original 1960 British film directed by Wolf Rilla. John Carpenter directed the 1995 "Village of the Damned" remake.
Plot of the book is to see and enjoy the beautifully surreal paintings of Stalenhag! Text is there to add to the beauty. This is a unique experience. In book format. Don't judge casually. Thanks
