Im a huge fan of the originals also, but not thrilled about this. I do think the costumes are meh! And they changed Astrid, Roughnut and Toughnut, not thrilled about that, and Hiccup looks like he belongs to a boyband, not Hiccup, although if they had left his hair curly, he looked more youthful.
I actually haven't read the books yet but from what I know they are wayyy different. How to train your Dragon is more of a in name only Adaptation. Like the book are so so different from what I know. So doing an Adaptation of that would actually be Something new. But noooo we have to remake the Films for no fucking reason, even though they hold up great and what is shown until now doesnt show what doing it in Live-Action would bring to the table. Like visually this isnt horrible or anything but like whats the point
Yeah, I was a huge fan of the books before the movies, and for years refused to watch the movies because it was so different. That being said, there is no way they could faithfully adapt the books, it's way too different and wouldn't work. Toothless is a small garden dragon in the books, he sits on hiccups shoulder. Riding dragons are a completely different variety that comes later in the books. The first book is basically the kids are required to go into a cave, steal personal dragons, and train them as a rite of passage. If they fail to steal a dragon, or fail to tame their dragon and train it for an obstacle course, they are banished, if they don't die first. Hiccup being a weakling is the first to befriend his dragon rather than brute force it into being tame if I remember correctly. He's also considered a weakling because he is the only person against capturing and taming dragons. Also he is the first to learn to speak dragonese (yes, dragons actually talk in the books), and it's basically English mixed with kids version of curse words. Also, he isn't even the one to get a monstrous nightmare, it was his bully, who actually wasn't allowed to take it, because they're supposed to be reserved for chiefs only, so hiccup was the only one with the right, but hiccup literally got the smallest (even small for a garden dragon), and toothless dragon that was actually a complete a-hole to hiccup.
@Sp1raw He is quite literally described as the smallest green common, or garden dragon he had ever seen, and was so underdeveloped that he was toothless, in fact he was so unimpressive that his unimpressiveness was in itself impressive, according to the book. Yes, in the very late books he's revealed to be a huge dragon breed, but considering it took a dozen books for that reveal, I'm gonna stick to my guns that he was, for the purposes of this comparison, a common garden dragon, and a tiny one at that.
Hiccup looks good, his demeanor is really similar to the og, the effects for the dragons and toothless looks real but exactly the same, the color and aesthetic look exactly the same. I think they completed the original trilogy to the point where no.3 wasn't really as compelling as 2. My only worry is that they'll lean in to the whole viking culture thing more than the original when it wasn't that in depth in the original people say if you like the property just rewatch the original, I disagree, I think theirs a lot of merit to watching good visual effects come to life and actors lending a layer of expressiveness I think experiencing the same story in different ways is a good way to refresh your interest, I like reading the hp books, and I loved the movies. Whether or not an individual would want this is subjective and these movies acknowledge theres a demographic who will appreciate trying to recapture childhood love without getting tired of the old movies rewatching them all the time
@clenema- I can kinda see where your coming with from Star Wars, only kinda, even if it had mature things in it, the art style stopped me from thinking it'll get truly dark, which is kinda my preference in stories uplifting highs and disturbing lows, like Anakin killing the younglings or Luke refusing to kill his father and have faith in the man who he once and (ultimately) still is.
i feel like they never advertise these things as much as they should. I know its a different company entirely, but like i never heard of the live action Pinocchio until people start reacting to it
1:48 this looks like how to train your dragon I don't know where the hell you got the average medieval times movie Just because it doesn't have color doesn't mean shit Look at the helmets look at the shield hiccup is holding look at the fire mark on the wall behind him
i was hoping for some great cinematography, the trailer dissapointed. I was hoping for great acting, the trailer dissapointed. I also dont think so many more people are going to watch it because they think animation is for kids, because this is a kids movie. It may be the greatest movie of all time, but it is for a fact a kids story
First this move is based of of the animated movie NOT the books if you like the books that’s fine but don’t unnecessarily hate the movie because of nitpicks like the colour differences (based off of scenes from the trailer the colours are good and vibrant) or it being based off of the animation. Though it is true that people might not like it because its “for kids” this shouldn’t take away from the story they’re trying to tell.
Nobody can like anything now adays. It looks fine. It doesn't look like its gonna be the most jaw dropping movie but it looks good. VFX on Toothless actually didn't look horrible and the colors well yeah of course its gonna be less vibrant its a Live Action movie in a viking setting
With live action remakes I honestly think they deserve more criticism because they are creatively bankrupt, clear cash grabs, and are completely unnecessary so making an okay live action remake makes it 10 times worse than an okay original movie
I get it's unnecessary to make animated movies in live action but you're telling me that it's not cool to see these mystical creatures in a realistic way I feel like live-action adaptations can be done right but companies suck at like everything they do And I feel like out of any DreamWorks movie. how to train your dragon makes the most sense. Like game of thrones existed. Harry Potter existed We just have to hope that they don't fuck it up which they probably will
in response to the "adults wont watch because they think animation is for kids" thing. Dreamworks is literally a family film company anyways. And HTTYD has always been a family franchise. Its always been for kids anyways. Regardless if they put a new gritty filter over a soulless "live-action" remake.
I'm never watching this. Httyd isn't even that old a series, so it especially doesn't need a remake, and if we're lucky it'll still only be as good as the original. The real dragons could be cool looking, but they're never be as expressive as Toothless or Hookfang, so what's the point?
You said 1940, but the first httyd only came out in 2010, the last movie only came out like 5 years ago, so it's even more ridiculous than the example you gave😅
It’s giving 2012 sky high protagonist…. Just make the literal film but live action. Nobody cares if it’s a copy, but that’s only if it’s a good remake. I don’t get why these big movie makers make stupid decisions like this and ignore all the backlash. You aren’t gonna get more money if you don’t listen to the people you’re literally marketing to. They’re saying they aren’t gonna watch it if it looks like that- Oh that must mean other people will love it!!
In cartoon, it's fine to have stereotipical vikings. In live action, it looks utterly ridiculous and cheap. Should have gone for a realistic look, that's the whole point of doing something live-action, if it's to make it look like the designs of the cartoon then...i would just watch the cartoon...
Thanks for watching everyone! How do you feel about this?

Good point, well said! Thanks for the comment.
I personally, am kinda excited for this
It looks great
This looks great tho
Let's hope for the best
How to train your dragon is the best trilogy? Lord of The Rings and Star Wars would like to have a word.
I haven't seen LOTR (I know), but this was absolutely a better trilogy compared to SW in my opinion.
